A theoretical model is developed describing high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from a gas of multiply-charged ions driven by a laser field of relativistic intensity. Macroscopic propagation of harmonics is investigated in a relativistic HHG setup where the relativistic drift is suppressed by means of x-ray field assistance of the driving laser field. The possibility of phase-matched emission of the harmonics is shown. The laser field geometry is optimized to maximize the HHG yield with the corresponding phase-matching schemes. Crucial issues determining the macroscopic HHG yield are discussed in detail.
We experimentally and numerically study the atomic response and pulse propagation effects of high-order harmonics generated in Xe, Kr, and Ar driven by a 2.1-μm infrared femtosecond light source. The light source is an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier, and a modified strong-field approximation and 3-dimensional pulse propagation code are used for the numerical simulations. The extended cutoff in the long-wavelength driven high-harmonic generation has revealed the spectral shaping of high-order harmonics due to the atomic structure (or photo-recombination cross-section) and the macros…
We present a theoretical analysis of high-order harmonic generation from ion-atom collisions in the presence of linearly polarized intense laser pulses. Photons with frequencies significantly higher than in standard atomic high-harmonic generation are emitted. These harmonics are due to two different mechanisms: (i) collisional electron capture and subsequent laser-driven transfer of an electron between projectile and target atom; (ii) reflection of a laser-driven electron from the projectile leading to recombination at the parent atom.
High-order harmonic generation from atomic systems is considered in the crossed fields of a relativistically strong infrared laser and a weak attosecond-pulse train of soft x-rays. Due to one-photon ionization by the x-ray pulse, the ionized electron obtains a starting momentum that compensates the relativistic drift which is induced by the laser magnetic field, and allows the electron to efficiently emit harmonic radiation upon recombination with the atomic core in the relativistic regime. In this way, short pulses of coherent hard x-rays of up to 40 keV energy and 10 as duration can be broug…
We investigate high-order harmonic spectra from aligned diatomic molecules in intense driving fields whose components have orthogonal polarizations. We focus on how the driving-field ellipticity influences structural interference patterns in a macroscopic medium. In a previous publication [Phys. Rev. A 88, 023404 (2013)] we have shown that the non-vanishing ellipticity introduces an effective dynamic shift in the angle for which the two-center interference maxima and minima occur, with regard to the existing condition for linearly polarized fields. In this work we show through simulation that …
High-order harmonic generation by few-cycle 800 nm laser pulses in neon gas in the presence of a strong terahertz (THz) field is investigated numerically with propagation effects taken into account. Our calculations show that the combination of THz fields with up to 12 fs laser pulses can be an effective gating technique to generate single attosecond pulses. We show that in the presence of the strong THz field only a single attosecond burst can be phase matched, whereas radiation emitted during other half-cycles disappears during propagation. The cutoff is extended and a wide supercontinuum ap…
We report theoretical calculations on the effect of the multiple orbital contribution in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from aligned CO$_2$ with inclusion of macroscopic propagation of harmonic fields in the medium. Our results show very good agreements with recent experiments for the dynamics of the minimum in HHG spectra as laser intensity or alignment angle changes. Calculations are carried out to check how the position of the minimum in HHG spectra depends on the degrees of molecular alignment, laser focusing conditions, and the effects of alignment-dependent ionization rates of the …
We calculate high-harmonic generation (HHG) by intense infrared lasers in atoms and molecules with the inclusion of macroscopic propagation of the harmonics in the gas medium. We show that the observed experimental spectra can be accurately reproduced theoretically despite that HHG spectra are sensitive to the experimental conditions. We further demonstrate that the simulated (or experimental) HHG spectra can be factored out as a product of a \macroscopic wave packet" and the photo-recombination transition dipole moment where the former depends on the laser properties and the experimental cond…
We have investigated photoionization of Ne$^+$ in the combined field of a short infra-red laser pulse and a delayed ultra-short pulse of the infra-red laser's 23$^r$$^d$ harmonic. We observe an ionization yield compatible with a picture in which one electron gets excited into Rydberg states by the harmonic laser field and is subsequently removed by the infra-red laser field. Modulations are seen in the ionization yield as a function of time delay. These modulations originate from the trapping of population in low members of the Rydberg series with different states being populated at different …
Using ab-initio non-Born-Oppenheimer simulations, we demonstrate amplification of XUV radiation in a high-harmonic generation type process using the example of the hydrogen molecular ion. A small fraction of the molecules is pumped to a dissociative Rydberg state from which IR-assisted XUV amplification is observed. We show that starting at sufficiently high IR driving field intensities the ground state molecules become quasi-transparent for XUV radiation, while due to stabilization gain from Rydberg states is maintained, thus leading to lasing from strongly driven Rydberg states. Further incr…
The ongoing development of intense high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources has recently enabled highly nonlinear ionization of atoms by the absorption of at least 10 extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photons within a single atom [Senfftleben \textit{et al.}, arXiv1911.01375]. Here we investigate the role that reshaping of the fundamental, few-cycle, near-infrared (NIR) driving laser within the 30-cm-long HHG Xe medium plays in the generation of the intense HHG pulses. Using an incident NIR intensity that is higher than what is required for phase-matched HHG, signatures of reshaping are found by measuri…
We solve the two-particle s-wave scattering for an ultracold atom gas confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trapping potential which is periodically modulated. The interaction between the atoms is included in terms of Fermi's pseudopotential. For a modulated isotropic transverse harmonic confinement, the atomic center of mass and relative degrees of freedom decouple and an exact solution is possible. We use the Floquet approach to show that additional photon-assisted resonant scattering channels open up due to the harmonic modulation. Applying the Bethe-Peierls boundary condition, we obtain the …
We present a study of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) assisted by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses, which can lead to the excitation of inner-shell electrons and the generation of a second HHG plateau. With the treatment of a one-dimensional model of krypton, based on time-dependent configuration interaction singles (TDCIS) of an effective two-electron system, we show that the XUV-assisted HHG spectrum reveals the duration of the semiclassical electron trajectories. The results are interpreted by the strong-field approximation (SFA) and the importance of the hole transfer durin…
We report theoretical calculations of high harmonic generation (HHG) by intense infrared lasers in atomic and molecular targets taking into account the macroscopic propagation of both fundamental and harmonic fields. On the examples of Ar and N$_2$, we demonstrate that these {\it ab initio} calculations are capable of accurately reproducing available experimental results with isotropic and aligned target media. We further present detailed analysis of HHG intensity and phase, under various experimental conditions, in particular, as the wavelength of the driving laser changes. Most importantly, …
We study the temporal and spatial dynamics of the large amplitude and frequency modulation that can be induced in an intense, few cycle laser pulse as it propagates through a rapidly ionizing gas. Our calculations include both single atom and macroscopic interactions between the non-linear medium and the laser field. We analyze the harmonic generation by such pulses and show that it is spatially separated from the ionization dynamics which produce a large dynamical blue shift of the laser pulse. This means that small changes in the initial laser focusing conditions can lead to large difference…
We study experimentally the influence of the intensity of the infrared (IR) probe field on attosecond pulse train (APT) phase measurements performed with the RABITT method (Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating by Interference in Two-Photon Transitions). We find that if a strong IR field is applied, the attosecond pulses will appear to have lower-than-actual chirp rates. We also observe the onset of the streaking regime in the breakdown of the weak-field RABITT conditions. We perform a Fourier-analysis of harmonic and sideband continuum states and show that the mutual phase relation of the harm…
We experimentally disentangle the contributions of different quantum paths in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from the spectrally and spatially resolved harmonic spectra. By adjusting the laser intensity and focusing position, we simultaneously observe the spectrum splitting, frequency shift and intensity-dependent modulation of harmonic yields both for the short and long paths. Based on the simulations, we discriminate the physical mechanisms of the intensity-dependent modulation of HHG due to the quantum path interference and macroscopic interference effects. Moreover, it is shown that …
We present single-molecule and macroscopic calculations showing that laser-induced Stark shifts contribute significantly to the phase of high-order harmonics from polar molecules. This is important for orbital tomography, where phases of field-free dipole matrix elements are needed in order to reconstruct molecular orbitals. We derive an analytical expression that allows the first-order Stark phase to be subtracted from experimental measurements.
We examine how the generation and propagation of high-order harmonics in a partly ionized gas medium affect their strength and synchronization. The temporal properties of the resulting attosecond pulses generated in long gas targets can be significantly influenced by macroscopic effects, in particular by the intensity in the medium and the degree of ionization. Under some conditions, the use of gas targets longer than the absorption length can lead to the generation of self-compressed attosecond pulses. We show this effect experimentally, using long argon-filled gas cells as generating medium.

We study the temporal aspects of laser-assisted extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photoionization using attosecond pulses of harmonic radiation. The aim of this paper is to establish the general form of the phase of the relevant transition amplitudes and to make the connection with the time-delays that have been recently measured in experiments. We find that the overall phase contains two distinct types of contributions: one is expressed in terms of the phase-shifts of the photoelectron continuum wavefunction while the other is linked to continuum--continuum transitions induced by the infrared (IR) la…
We study the influence of phase matching on interference minima in high harmonic spectra. We concentrate on structures in atoms due to interference of different angular momentum channels during recombination. We use the Cooper minimum (CM) in argon at 47 eV as a marker in the harmonic spectrum. We measure 2d harmonic spectra in argon as a function of wavelength and angular divergence. While we identify a clear CM in the spectrum when the target gas jet is placed after the laser focus, we find that the appearance of the CM varies with angular divergence and can even be completely washed out whe…
