We calculate the disconnected contribution to the form factor for the semileptonic decay of a D-meson into a final state, containing a flavor singlet eta meson. We use QCDSF n_f=2+1 configurations at the flavor symmetric point m_u=m_d=m_s and the partially quenched approximation for the relativistic charm quark. Several acceleration and noise reduction techniques for the stochastic estimation of the disconnected loop are tested.
We report lattice results of $D_s$ meson semi-leptonic decay form factors to $η$ and $η'$ mesons. This decay process contains disconnected fermion loops, which are challenging in lattice calculations. Our result shows that the disconnected loops give significant contributions to the form factors.
There are generally two types of Wick contractions in lattice QCD calculations of a correlation function --- connected and disconnected ones. The disconnected contribution is difficult to calculate and noisy, thus it is often neglected. In the context of studying tetraquarks, hadronic molecules and meson-meson scattering, we show that whenever there are both connected and singly disconnected contractions, the singly disconnected part gives the leading order contribution, and thus should never be neglected. As an explicit example, we show that information about the scalar mesons sigma, f0(980),…
Form factors relevant for semi-leptonic $B\to D,\ D^*$ decays are obtained in quenched lattice QCD. Tests of heavy-quark symmetry as well as determinations of the Isgur-Wise function and $|V_{cb}|$ are presented.
Utilizing the approach recently proposed for the inclusive semi-leptonic decay rate on the lattice, we compute the differential decay rate of a $B_s$ meson for various kinematical channels. The results are compared with the contributions from the ground states (D and D^*) as well as from the orbitally excited states (D^**'s). The computation so far is carried out with an unphysically light bottom quark and strange spectator quark.
In Carrasco et al. we have recently proposed a method to calculate $O(e^2)$ electromagnetic corrections to leptonic decay widths of pseudoscalar mesons. The method is based on the observation that the infrared divergent contributions (that appear at intermediate stages of the calculation and that cancel in physical quantities thanks to the Bloch-Nordsieck mechanism) are universal, i.e. depend on the charge and the mass of the meson but not on its internal structure. In this talk we perform a detailed analysis of the finite-volume effects associated with our method. In particular we show that a…
We evaluate properties of neutral mesons in Nf=2 dynamical simulations of TMQCD at maximal twist. The pion is explored - establishing the size of the isospin splitting (an order a^2 effect). We investigate the eta' (the Nf=2 flavour singlet pseudoscalar meson) and neutral rho and scalar mesons. We show that disconnected diagrams can be evaluated very efficiently in TMQCD using variance reduction methods.
We present results of a lattice computation of the matrix elements of the vector and axial-vector currents which are relevant for the semi-leptonic decays $D \rightarrow K$ and $D \rightarrow K^*$. The computations are performed in the quenched approximation to lattice QCD on a $24^3 \times 48$ lattice at $β=6.2$ using an $O(a)$-improved fermionic action.
A recently proposed approach to compute the inclusive semi-leptonic decay rate on the lattice allows for the calculation of various quantities (differential distributions and moments) in different subchannels. We systematically compare the lattice QCD results for an unphysically light bottom quark with OPE-based predictions, including leading order perturbative and $\mathcal{O}\left(1/m^3 \right)$ power corrections, and explore possible strategies to decrease the systematic uncertainty.
$B$-physics is one of the most promising windows to find new physics in the flavor sector. One key ingredient to these searches are precise theoretical predictions derived from the Standard Model. Focusing at the nonperturbative QCD contributions, we carry out lattice QCD simulations in order to calculate $B$-meson decay constants and semi-leptonic form factors. Combined with experimental measurements our results enable us to determine CKM matrix elements. Here we present $B$ and $B_s$ meson decay constants as well as semi-leptonic form factors including rare decays, CKM or GIM suppressed in t…
We present a lattice QCD computation and preliminary results for the leptonic decay constants of the pseudoscalar mesons $K$, $D$ and $D_{s}$ in the isosymmetric QCD limit. The computation is based on simulations of $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks performed by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC), where the light, strange and charm quark masses are all tuned at their physical values. We also present preliminary unitarity checks for the first and second rows of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.
We present a non-perturbative lattice calculation of the form factors which contribute to the amplitudes for the radiative decays $P\to \ell \bar ν_\ell γ$, where $P$ is a pseudoscalar meson and $\ell$ is a charged lepton. Together with the non-perturbative determination of the corrections to the processes $P\to \ell \bar ν_\ell$ due to the exchange of a virtual photon, this allows accurate predictions at $O(α_{em})$ to be made for leptonic decay rates for pseudoscalar mesons ranging from the pion to the $D_s$ meson. We are able to separate unambiguously and non-pertubatively the point-like co…
We study transition form factors for radiative and rare semi-leptonic B-meson decays into light pseudoscalar or vector mesons, combining theoretical constraints and phenomenological information from Lattice QCD, light-cone sum rules, and dispersive bounds. We pay particular attention to form factor parameterisations which are based on the so-called series expansion, and study the related systematic uncertainties on a quantitative level. In this context, we also provide the NLO corrections to the correlation function between two flavour-changing tensor currents, which enters the unitarity const…
We summarize a computation of the leptonic decay constant f_D_s of the D_s-meson in quenched QCD on the lattice. We perform a direct simulation at the masses of the strange and the charm quarks at four different lattice spacings from approximately 0.1 fm to 0.05 fm. Fully non perturbative O(a)-improvement is employed. After taking the continuum limit we arrive at a value of f_D_s=252(9) MeV, when setting the scale with the Kaon decay constant f_K=160 MeV. Setting the scale with the nucleon mass instead leads to a decrease of about 20 MeV of f_D_s.
We study the possible significance of four-quark states in the iso-singlet scalar mesons ($J^{PC}=0^{++}$, $I=0$) by performing two-flavor full lattice QCD simulations on an $8^3 \times 16$ lattice using the improved gauge action and the clover-improved Wilson quark action. In particular, we evaluate the propagators of molecular and tetra-quark operators together with singly disconnected diagrams. In the computation of the singly disconnected diagrams we employ the $Z_2$-noise method with the truncated eigenmode approach. We show that the quark loops given by the disconnected diagrams play an …
Electromagnetic effects in the leptonic decay rates $π^+ \to μ^+ ν$ and $K^+ \to μ^+ ν$ are evaluated for the first time on the lattice. Following a method recently proposed in Ref. [1] the emission of virtual photons at leading order in the electromagnetic coupling is evaluated on the lattice and the infrared divergence computed for a point-like meson at finite lattice volume is subtracted. The physical decay rate is then obtained by adding the emission of real and virtual photons regularised with a photon mass. Using the gauge ensembles produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration wit…
We present a progress report on new calculations of B and B_s meson decay constants employing NRQCD heavy and HISQ light valence quarks and using MILC N_f = 2+1 AsqTad lattices. Bare quark masses have been retuned in accord with HPQCD's new r_1 scale. We find significant reductions in discretization effects compared to previous calculations with AsqTad light valence quarks. Matching of the NRQCD/HISQ heavy-light axial vector current is carried out at one-loop order including all relevant dimension 4 current corrections.
Recent results for semi-leptonic decays of $D$ and $B$ mesons at $β=6.4$, using the Wilson action, and at $β=6.0$, using the Clover action, are reported.
In lattice QCD, obtaining properties of heavy-light mesons has been easier said than done. Focusing on the $B$ meson's decay constant, it is argued that towards the end of 1997 the last obstacles were removed, at least in the quenched approximation. These developments, which resulted from a fuller understanding and implementation of ideas in effective field theory, bode well for current studies of neutral meson mixing and of semileptonic decays.
The measured rate for D_s -> l nu decays, where l is a muon or tau, is larger than the standard model prediction, which relies on lattice QCD, at the 3.8 sigma level. We discuss how robust the theoretical prediction is, and we show that the discrepancy with experiment may be explained by a charged Higgs boson or a leptoquark.
Adding a hard photon to the final state of a leptonic pseudoscalar-meson decay lifts the helicity suppression and can provide sensitivity to a larger set of operators in the weak effective Hamiltonian. Furthermore, radiative leptonic $B$ decays at high photon energy are well suited to constrain the first inverse moment of the $B$-meson light-cone distribution amplitude, an important parameter in the theory of nonleptonic $B$ decays. We demonstrate that the calculation of radiative leptonic decays is possible using Euclidean lattice QCD, and present preliminary numerical results for $D_s^+ \to …
We review measurements of semileptonic and leptonic charm meson decays performed by the Belle experiment, and we use these results to estimate the sensitivity of the follow-on Belle II experiment to these decays.
We report results (on an intermediate statistics sample) of a study of weak semi-leptonic formfactors of $B$ and $D$ decays, addressing the uncertainties from mass extrapolations to chiral and to heavy quarks. Moreover, we present a nonperturbative test to the LMK current renormalization scheme for vector current {\it transition} matrix elements and find remarkable agreement.
Recent measurements of the branching fraction for D_s -> l nu disagree with the Standard Model expectation, which relies on calculations of $f_{D_s}$ from lattice QCD. This paper uses recent preliminary measurements from CLEO and a new preliminary lattice-QCD result from this conference to update the significance of the discrepancy. The "f_{D_s} puzzle" stands now at 3.5sigma, with sigma predominantly from the statistical uncertainty of the experiments. New physics scenarios that could solve the puzzle would also lead to non-Standard amplitudes mediating the semileptonic decays D -> K l nu. Th…
We propose a method to non-perturbatively calculate the forward-scattering matrix elements relevant to inclusive semi-leptonic B meson decays. Corresponding hadronic structure functions at unphysical kinematics are accessible through lattice QCD calculation of four-point correlation functions. The unphysical kinematical point may be reached by analytic continuation from the physical differential decay rate. A numerical test is performed for the B_s -> X_c l nu mode in the zero-recoil limit. We use lattice ensembles generated with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors. The valence charm quark mass is tun…
We study the radiative leptonic decays $P\to\ellν_\ell\,\ell^{\prime\,+}\ell^{\prime\,-}$, where $P$ is a pseudoscalar meson and $\ell$ and $\ell^\prime$ are charged leptons. In such decays the emitted photon is off-shell and, in addition to the "point-like" contribution in which the virtual photon is emitted either from the lepton or the meson treated as a point-like particle, four structure-dependent (SD) form factors contribute to the amplitude. We present a strategy for the extraction of the SD form factors and implement it in an exploratory lattice computation of the decay rates for the f…
We present a non-perturbative calculation of the form factors which contribute to the amplitudes for the radiative decays $P\to \ell \bar ν_\ell γ$, where $P$ is a pseudoscalar meson and $\ell$ is a charged lepton. Together with the non-perturbative determination of the virtual photon corrections to the processes $P\to \ell \bar ν_\ell$, this will allow accurate predictions to be made at $O(α_{em})$ for leptonic decay rates for pseudoscalar mesons ranging from the pion to the $B$ meson. We are able to separate unambiguously the point-like contribution, the square of which leads to the infrared…
The decreasing uncertainties in theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of several hadronic observables related to weak processes, which in many cases are now smaller than $\mathrm{O}(1\%)$, require theoretical calculations to include subleading corrections that were neglected so far. Precise determinations of leptonic and semi-leptonic decay rates, including QED and strong isospin-breaking effects, can play a central role in solving the current tensions in the first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. In this work we present the first RBC/UKQCD lattice calculation of the isospin-br…
A high statistics calculation, performed at $β=5.74,\;6.00$ and $6.26$, enables us to study the variation of the leptonic decay constants $f_P$ of heavy pseudoscalar mesons with the lattice spacing $a$. We observe only a weak $a$ dependence when the standard $\sqrt{2κ}$ normalization is used for the quark fields, whereas application of the Kronfeld-Mackenzie normalization induces a stronger variation with $a$. Increasing the meson mass from $1.1GeV$ to $2.3GeV$ this situation becomes even more pronounced.
The present status of lattice calculations of $f_D$, $f_B$ and some mass splittings are discussed. When one includes the uncertainties due to discretization errors, the results do not yet have a sufficient precision to be relevant to phenomenological applications. There are, however, good prospects of cutting down the uncertainties by a factor of 2 or more soon.
We present a preliminary non-perturbative lattice calculation of the form factors entering the processes $K\to \ell\,ν_\ell\,\ell'^+\,\ell'^-$ and of the corresponding branching ratios. These form factors describe the interaction between the mediating virtual photon and the internal hadronic structure of the meson. By separating them from the point-like contribution to the matrix element we are able to isolate and reconstruct the structure-dependent contribution to the decay width. Our numerical analysis employs only one gauge ensemble and so it is affected by systematic uncertainties due to t…
We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interaction-based CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant $f_P$. The leptonic decay constants for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^{\pm}$, $D_s^\pm$, and $B^\pm$ mesons can be obtained with controlled theoretical uncertainties and high precision from {\it ab initio} lat…
We present results of a lattice computation of the matrix elements of the vector currents which are relevant for the semileptonic decays of D to K, D to pi and B to pi. The computations are performed in the quenched approximation on a 24^3x48 lattice at beta=6.2, using an O(a) non-perturbatively improved fermionic action.
We present results of a lattice computation of the matrix elements of the vector and axial-vector currents which are relevant for the semi-leptonic decays $D \rightarrow K$ and $D \rightarrow K^*$. The computations are performed in the quenched approximation to lattice QCD on a $24^3 \times 48$ lattice at $β=6.2$, using an $O(a)$-improved fermionic action. In the limit of zero lepton masses the semi-leptonic decays $D \rightarrow K$ and $D \rightarrow K^*$ are described by four form factors: $f^{+}_K,V,A_1$ and $A_2$, which are functions of $q^2$, where $q^μ$ is the four-momentum transferred i…
We compute the vector meson decay constants fD*, fDs* from the simulation of twisted mass QCD on the lattice with Nf = 2 dynamical quarks. When combining their values with the pseudoscalar D(s)-meson decay constants, we were able (i) to show that the heavy quark spin symmetry breaking effects with the charm quark are large, fDs*/fDs = 1.26(3), and (ii) to check the factorization approximation in a few specific B-meson non-leptonic decay modes. Besides our main results, fD* = 278 \pm 13 \pm 10 MeV, and fDs* = 311 \pm 9 MeV, other phenomenologically interesting results of this paper are: fDs*/fD…
The form factors for the semi-leptonic B->D and B->D* decays are evaluated in quenched lattice QCD at two different values of the coupling, beta=6.0 and 6.2. The action and the operators are fully O(a) non-perturbatively improved. The slope of the Isgur-Wise function is evaluated, and found to be rho^2=0.83^{+15+24}_{-11-1} (quoted errors are statistical and systematic respectively). Ratios of form factors are evaluated and compared to experimental determinations.
We report on the status of an ongoing effort by the RQCD and ALPHA Collaborations, aimed at determining leptonic decay constants of charmed mesons. Our analysis is based on large-volume ensembles generated within the CLS effort, employing N_f=2+1 non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson quarks, tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and open boundary conditions. The ensembles cover lattice spacings from a ~ 0.09 fm to a ~ 0.05 fm, with pion masses varied from 420 to 200 MeV. To extrapolate to the physical masses, we follow both the 2m_l+m_s=const. and the m_s=const. lines in parameter space.
We discuss the contribution of OZI-suppressed diagrams to the hyperfine splitting of charmonium in lattice QCD. We study valence quark mass regions from strange to charm quark masses. No contribution of the disconnected diagram is seen in the vector meson channel. In the pseudo-scalar channel and for valence quark masses around the strange quark, the disconnected contribution induces a considerable increase of the meson mass. This contribution quickly decreases as the quark mass increases. For charmonium the effect is very small although a decrease of the pseudoscalar mass induced by the disco…
We present the status of our updated D- and B-meson decay-constant analysis, based on the MILC $N_f = 2+1$ asqtad gauge ensembles. Heavy quarks are incorporated using the Wilson clover action with the Fermilab interpretation. This analysis includes ensembles at five lattice spacings from a $\approx$ 0.045 to 0.15 fm, and light sea-quark masses down to 1/20th of the strange-quark mass. Projected error budgets for ratios of decay constants, in particular between bottom- and charm-meson decay constants, are presented.
We address the non-perturbative calculation of the decay rate of inclusive semi-leptonic $B_{(s)}$ mesons decays from lattice QCD. Precise theoretical Standard Model predictions are key ingredients in searches for new physics. This type of computation may eventually provide new insight into the long-standing tension between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We perform a pilot lattice computation for $B_s \rightarrow X_c \, l ν_l$ and improve on existing techniques. The valence-quark masses in our simulations are approximately physi…
We present a high statistics study of the leptonic decay constant $f_P$ of heavy pseudoscalar mesons using propagating heavy Wilson quarks within the quenched approximation, on lattices covering sizes from about 0.7~fm to 2~fm. Varying $β$ between 5.74 and 6.26 we observe a sizeable $a$ dependence of $f_P$ when one uses the quark field normalization that was suggested by Kronfeld and Mackenzie, compared with the weaker dependence observed for the standard relativistic norm. The two schemes come into agreement when one extrapolates to $a \rightarrow 0$. The extrapolations needed to reach the co…
Employing the QCD factorization formalism we compute $B_{u}^{-} \to γ^{\ast} \, \ell \, \bar ν_{\ell}$ form factors with an off-shell photon state possessing the virtuality of order $m_b \, Λ_{\rm QCD}$ and $m_b^2$, respectively, at next-to-leading order in QCD. Perturbative resummation for the enhanced logarithms of $m_b / Λ_{\rm QCD}$ in the resulting factorization formulae is subsequently accomplished at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy with the renormalization-group technique in momentum space. In particular, we derive the soft-collinear factorization formulae for a variety of the subl…
We describe a recent lattice-QCD calculation of the leptonic decay constants of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons containing charm and bottom quarks and of the masses of the up, down, strange, charm, and bottom quarks. Results for these quantities are of the highest precision to date. Calculations use 24 isospin-symmetric ensembles of gauge-field configurations with six different lattice spacings as small as approximately 0.03 fm and several values of the light quark masses down to physical values of the average up- and down-sea-quark masses. We use the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) for…
This paper is a review of recent lattice QCD results for $D$ and $D_s$ meson leptonic and semileptonic decays. The theory inputs needed for the determination of $V_{cd}$ and $V_{cs}$ from experimental results are the meson decay constants (leptonic decays) and the form factors (semileptonic decays). In addition one can compare the shape of the form factors from lattice QCD and experiment, and use the full experimental $q^2$ range (partial decay rates in $q^2$ bins) to determine the CKM matrix elements.
We perform a non-perturbative lattice calculation of the decay rates for inclusive semi-leptonic decays of charmed mesons. In view of the long-standing tension in the determination of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ from exclusive and inclusive processes, recently, the use of lattice QCD has been extended towards the description of inclusive decays. Since the determination of hadronic input parameters from QCD based methods require independent tests, we focus on the charm sector, since it not only offers experimental data, but also well determined CKM parameters. We carry out…
Calculation of the eta-prime meson mass is a notoriously difficult problem, as it requires evaluation of the disconnected diagram which is costly and noisy. In this work, we use a gluonic operator to extract the eta-prime state after smearing the link variables through the Wilson flow. With this choice, one can avoid a large cancellation of pion contribution between the connected and disconnected diagrams. We obtain the eta-prime meson mass on lattices with three different lattice spacings and two physical volumes, which allow us to estimate its continuum and large volume limits.
We report on lattice results of the form factors for semi-leptonic decays of the D_s meson to eta and eta', with n_f=2+1 configurations. The calculation contains disconnected fermion loop diagrams, which are challenging to calculate on the lattice. Our result shows that the disconnected diagrams give significant contributions to the form factors.
Disconnected diagrams give crucial contributions to the physics of flavor singlet hadrons and to scalar form factors of non-singlet hadrons. Naive lattice calculation of the disconnected diagrams, however, requires a huge number of fermion matrix inversions and hence a prohibitively large computational cost. In this article, we present recent studies of the flavor-singelt meson spectrum and nucleon strange quark content using the all-to-all propagator to calculate the relevant disconnected diagrams.
We study the chiral properties of domain-wall quarks at high temperatures on an ensemble of quenched configurations. Low lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator are calculated and used to check the extent to which the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is obeyed on lattices with finite $N_5$. We calculate the connected and disconnected screening propagators for the lowest mass scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in the sectors of different topological charge and note that they behave as expected. Separating out the would-be zero eigenmodes enables us to accurately estimate the disconnected propagators with…
