The primordial velocity dispersion of dark matter is small compared to the velocities attained during structure formation. The initial density distribution is close to uniform and it occupies an initial sheet in phase space that is single valued in velocity space. Because of gravitational forces this three dimensional manifold evolves in phase space without ever tearing, conserving phase-space volume and preserving the connectivity of nearby points. N-body simulations already follow the motion of this sheet in phase space. This fact can be used to extract full fine-grained phase-space-structure information from existing cosmological N-body simulations. Particles are considered as the vertices of an unstructured three dimensional mesh, moving in six dimensional phase-space. On this mesh, mass density and momentum are uniquely defined. We show how to obtain the space density of the fluid, detect caustics, and count the number of streams as well as their individual contributions to any point in configuration-space. We calculate the bulk velocity, local velocity dispersions, and densities from the sheet - all without averaging over control volumes. This gives a wealth of new information about dark matter fluid flow which had previously been thought of as inaccessible to N-body simulations. We outline how this mapping may be used to create new accurate collisionless fluid simulation codes that may be able to overcome the sparse sampling and unphysical two-body effects that plague current N-body techniques.
In the current cosmological paradigm, an initially flat three-dimensional manifold that pervades space (the `dark-matter sheet') folds up to build concentrations of mass (galaxies), and a cosmic web between them. Galaxies are nodes, connected by a network of filaments and walls. The folding is in six-dimensional (3D position, plus 3D velocity) phase space. The positions of creases, or caustics, mark the edges of structures. Here, I introduce an origami approximation to cosmological structure formation, in which the dark-matter sheet is not allowed to stretch. But it still produces an idealized…
The nature of dark energy, driving the accelerated expansion of the Universe, is one of the most important issues in modern astrophysics. In order to understand this phenomenon, we need precise astrophysical probes of the universal expansion spanning wide redshift ranges. Quasars have recently emerged as such a probe, thanks to their high intrinsic luminosities and, most importantly, our ability to measure their luminosity distances independently of redshifts. Here we report our ongoing work on observational reverberation mapping using the time delay of the Mg II line, performed with the South…
Clusters, filaments, sheets and voids are the building blocks of the cosmic web. In this study, we present and compare two distinct algorithms for finding cosmic filaments and sheets, a task which is far less well established than the identification of dark matter halos or voids. One method is based on the smoothed dark matter density field, the other uses the halo distributions directly. We apply both techniques to one high resolution N-body simulation and reconstruct the filamentary/sheet like network of the dark matter density field. We focus on investigating the properties of the dark matt…
At early times dark matter has a thermal velocity dispersion of unknown amplitude which, for warm dark matter models, can influence the formation of nonlinear structure on observable scales. We propose a new scheme to simulate cosmologies with a small-scale suppression of perturbations that combines two previous methods in a way that avoids the numerical artefacts which have so far prevented either from producing fully reliable results. At low densities and throughout most of the cosmological volume, we represent the dark matter phase-sheet directly using high-accuracy interpolation, thereby a…
Tessellations are valuable both conceptually and for analysis in the study of the large-scale structure of the universe. They provide a conceptual model for the 'cosmic web,' and are of great use to analyze cosmological data. Here we describe tessellations in another set of coordinates, of the initially flat sheet of dark matter that gravity folds up in rough analogy to origami. The folds that develop are called caustics, and they tessellate space into stream regions. Tessellations of the dark-matter sheet are also useful in simulation analysis, for instance for density measurement, and to ide…
It has been suggested that the central stellar velocity dispersion of galaxies can trace dark matter halo mass directly. We test this hypothesis using a complete spectroscopic sample of isolated galaxies surrounded by faint satellite galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm with projected linking length $ΔD < 100$ kpc and radial velocity linking length $ΔV < 1000$ km s$^{-1}$ to construct our sample. Our sample includes 2807 isolated galaxies with 3417 satellite galaxies at $0.01 < z < 0.14$. We divide the sample into two groups based …
We present a novel application of the extended Fast Action Minimization method (eFAM) aimed at assessing the role of the environment in shaping galaxy evolution. We validate our approach by testing eFAM predictions against the Magneticum hydrodynamical simulation. We consider the z~0 snapshot of the simulation as our observed catalogue and use the reconstructed trajectories of galaxies to model the evolution of cosmic structures. At the statistical level, the fraction of volume (VFF) occupied by voids, sheets, filaments, and clusters in the reconstructed catalogues agrees within $1σ$ with the …
Tracing Dark Matter in the Central Regions of Galaxy Clusters Using Galaxies, Gas, and Intracluster Light in TNG300: Connections to Cluster Dynamical State
We present "sheet+release" simulations that reliably follow the evolution of dark matter structure at and below the dark matter free-streaming scale, where instabilities in traditional N-body simulations create a large population of spurious artificial haloes. Our simulations sample a large range of power-spectrum cutoff functions, parameterized through the half-mode scale $k_{\rm{hm}}$ and a slope parameter $β$. This parameter space can represent many non-cold dark matter models, including thermal relic warm dark matter, sterile-neutrinos, fuzzy dark matter, and a significant fraction of ETHO…
A recent study conducted using CALIFA survey data (Lee et al, 2019b) has found that the orbital motions of neighbor galaxies are coherent with the spin direction of a target galaxy on scales of many Megaparsecs. We study this so called `large-scale coherence' phenomena using N-body cosmological simulations. We confirm a strong coherence signal within 1 Mpc/h of a target galaxy, reaching out to 6 Mpc/h. We divide the simulation halos into subsamples based on mass, spin, merger history and local halo number density for both target and neighbor halos. We find a clear dependency on the mass of the…
The late integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect correlates the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies with foreground cosmic large-scale structures. As the correlation depends crucially on the growth history in the era of dark energy, it is a key observational probe for constraining the cosmological model. Here we present a detailed study based on full-sky and deep light cones generated from very large volume numerical N-body simulations, which allow us to avoid the use of standard replica techniques, while capturing the entirety of the late ISW effect on the large scales. We …
Llight-element abundances probing big bang nucleosynthesis and precision data from cosmology probing the cosmic microwave background decoupling epoch have hinted at the presence of extra relativistic degrees of freedom. This is widely referred to as "dark radiation", suggesting the need for new light states in the UV completion of the standard model. We provide a brief and concise overview of the current observational status of such dark radiation and investigate the interplay between two possible interpretations of the extra light states: the right-handed partners of three Dirac neutrinos (wh…
A new computational paradigm for the analysis of substructure of the Cosmic Web in cosmological cold dark matter simulations is proposed. We introduce a new data-field --- the flip-flop field ---which carries wealth of information about the history and dynamics of the structure formation in the universe. The flip-flop field is an ordered data set in Lagrangian space representing the number of turns inside out sign reversals of an elementary volume of each collisionless fluid element represented by a computational particle in a N-body simulation. This field is computed using the Lagrangian subm…
In a cold-dark-matter universe, cosmological structure formation proceeds in rough analogy to origami folding. Dark matter occupies a three-dimensional 'sheet' of free- fall observers, non-intersecting in six-dimensional velocity-position phase space. At early times, the sheet was flat like an origami sheet, i.e. velocities were essentially zero, but as time passes, the sheet folds up to form cosmic structure. The present paper further illustrates this analogy, and clarifies a Lagrangian definition of caustics and streams: caustics are two-dimensional surfaces in this initial sheet along which…

We propose to trace the dynamical motion of a shearing hot spot near the SgrA* source through a dynamical image reconstruction algorithm, StarWarps. Such a hot spot may form as the exhaust of magnetic reconnection in a current sheet near the black hole horizon. A hot spot that is ejected from the current sheet into an orbit in the accretion disk may shear and diffuse due to instabilities at its boundary during its orbit, resulting in a distinct signature. We subdivide the motion to two distinct phases; the first phase refers to the appearance of the hot spot modelled as a bright blob, followed…
Both simulations and observations have found that the spin of halo/galaxy is correlated with the large scale environment, and particularly the spin of halo flips in filament. A consistent picture of halo spin evolution in different environments is still lacked. Using N-body simulation we find that halo spin with its environment evolves continuously from sheet to cluster, and the flip of halo spin happens both in filament and nodes. For the flip in filament can be explained by halo formation time and the migrating time when its environment changes from sheet to filament. For low-mass haloes, th…
ICL is believed to originate from the stars stripped from cluster galaxies. They are no longer gravitationally bound to individual galaxies, but to the cluster, and their smooth distribution potentially makes them serve as much denser tracers of the cluster dark matter than the sparsely distributed cluster galaxies. We present our study of the ICL in Cl 0024+17 using both ACS and Subaru data, where we previously reported discovery of a ringlike dark matter structure with gravitational lensing. The ACS images provide much lower sky levels than ground data, and enable us to measure relative vari…
The extragalactic $γ$-ray background and its spatial anisotropy could potentially contain a signature of dark matter (DM) annihilation or particle decay. Astrophysical foregrounds, such as blazars and star-forming galaxies (SFGs), however, dominate the $γ$-ray background, precluding an easy detection of the signal associated with the DM annihilation or decay in the background intensity spectrum. The DM imprint on the $γ$-ray background is expected to be correlated with large-scale structure tracers. In some cases, such a cross-correlation is even expected to have a higher signal-to-noise ratio…

Observations of gamma-ray bursts up to $z\sim 9$ are best suited to study the possible evolution of the Universe equation of state at intermediate redshifts. We apply the Combo-relation to a sample of 174 gamma ray bursts to investigate possible evidence of evolving dark energy parameter $w(z)$. We first build a gamma ray burst Hubble's diagram and then we estimate the set ($Ω_m$, $Ω_Λ$) in the framework of flat and non-flat $Λ$CDM paradigm. We then get bounds over the $w$CDM model, where $w$ is thought to evolve with redshift, adopting two priors over the Hubble constant in tension at $4.4$-$…
We review the current standard model for the evolution of cosmic structure, tracing its development over the last forty years and focusing specifically on the role played by numerical simulations and on aspects related to the nature of dark matter.
How is mass distributed in the Universe? How does it compare with the distribution of light and stars? We address these questions by examining the distribution of mass, determined from weak lensing observations, and starlight, around $>10^5$ SDSS MaxBCG groups and clusters as a function of environment and scale, from deep inside clusters to large cosmic scales of $22 h^{-1}$ Mpc. The observed cumulative mass-to-light profile, $M/L (< r)$, rises on small scales, reflecting the increasing $M/L$ of the central bright galaxy of the cluster, then flattens to a nearly constant ratio on scales above …
We investigate the evolution of cosmic web since $z=5$ in grid based cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, focusing on the mass and velocity field of both baryonic and cold dark matter. The tidal tensor of density is used as the main method for web identification, with $λ_{th}=0.2-1.2$. The evolution trends in baryonic and dark matter are similar, while moderate differences are observed. Sheets appeared early and their large scale pattern may have been set up by $z=3$. In term of mass, filaments superseded sheets as the primary collapsing structures at $z\sim2-3$. Tenuous filaments assemble…
The scale radius of dark matter halos is a critical parameter for specifying the density distribution of dark matter, and is therefore a fundamental parameter for modeling galaxies. We develop here a novel, observationally motivated probe to quantitatively infer its value. We demonstrate that disturbances in the extended atomic hydrogen gas disks of galaxies can be used to infer the scale radius of dark matter halos. Our primary metric is the phase of the $m=1$ mode of the disturbance in the outskirts of the gas disk, which we take to be produced by a tidal interaction. We apply the method to …
We apply novel, recently developed plasma ray-tracing techniques to model the propagation of radio photons produced by axion dark matter in neutron star magnetospheres and combine this with both archival and new data for the galactic centre magnetar PSR J1745-2900. The emission direction to the observer and the magnetic orientation are not constrained for this object leading to parametric uncertainty. Our analysis reveals that ray-tracing greatly reduces the signal sensitivity to this uncertainty, contrary to previous calculations where there was no emission at all in some directions. Based on…
We develop a new code, the Hierarchical Bound-Tracing (HBT for short) code, to find and trace dark matter subhaloes in simulations based on the merger hierarchy of dark matter haloes. Application of this code to a recent benchmark test of finding subhaloes demonstrates that HBT stands as one of the best codes to trace the evolutionary history of subhaloes. The success of the code lies in its careful treatment of the complex physical processes associated with the evolution of subhaloes and in its robust unbinding algorithm with an adaptive source subhalo management. We keep a full record of the…
We compare the statistics and morphology of giant arcs in galaxy clusters using N-body and non-radiative SPH simulations within the standard cold dark matter model and simulations where dark matter has a non-negligible probability of interaction (parametrized by its cross-section), i.e self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). We use a ray-tracing technique to produce a statistically large number of arcs around six simulated galaxy clusters at different redshifts. Since dark matter is more likely to interact in colliding clusters than in relaxed clusters, and this probability of interaction is larg…
We investigate unbound dark matter particles in halos by tracing particle trajectories in a simulation run to the far future (a = 100). We find that the traditional sum of kinetic and potential energies is a very poor predictor of which dark matter particles will eventually become unbound from halos. We also study the mass fraction of unbound particles, which increases strongly towards the edges of halos, and decreases significantly at higher redshifts. We discuss implications for dark matter detection experiments, precision calibrations of the halo mass function, the use of baryon fractions t…
We develop a formalism to describe electron ejections from graphene-like targets by dark matter (DM) scattering for general forms of scalar and spin 1/2 DM-electron interactions and compare their applicability and accuracy within the density functional theory (DFT) and tight binding (TB) approaches. This formalism allows for accurate prediction of the daily modulation signal expected from DM in upcoming direct detection experiments employing graphene sheets as the target material. A key result is that the physics of the graphene sheet and that of the DM and the ejected electron factorise, allo…
We study how the properties of cosmic voids depend on those of the tracer galaxy populations in which they are identified. We use a suite of halo occupation distribution (HOD) mocks in a simulation, identify voids in these populations using the ZOBOV void finder and measure their abundances, sizes, tracer densities, and dark matter content. To separate the effects of bias from those of sampling density, we do the same for voids traced by randomly down-sampled subsets of the simulation dark matter particles. At the same sampling density, galaxy bias reduces the total number of voids by ~50% and…
The intrinsic alignment of galaxies is an important systematic effect in weak-lensing surveys, which can affect the derived cosmological parameters. One direct way to distinguish different alignment models and quantify their effects on the measurement is to produce mocked weak-lensing surveys. In this work, we use full-sky ray-tracing technique to produce mock images of galaxies from the ELUCID $N$-body simulation run with the WMAP9 cosmology. In our model we assume that the shape of central elliptical galaxy follows that of the dark matter halo, and spiral galaxy follows the halo spin. Using …
We examine the flux density ratio anomaly in the quadruply-imaged strong gravitational lens, B1422+231, and consider the contribution of $10-10^3M_{\odot}$ primordial black holes (PBHs) as a potential dark matter constituent. We describe the first flux density ratio measurement of B1422+231 in the millimeter-wave band using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). This fills an important multi-wavelength gap in our knowledge of this key lensed system. The flux density of the quasar at 233 GHz is dominated by synchrotron emission and the source size is estimated to be 66.9 pc. The observed fl…
We introduce and study a model designed to simultaneously shed light on the mysteries connected with Baryogenesis, Dark Matter and Dark Energy. The model describes a self-interacting complex axion field whose imaginary part, a pseudo-scalar axion, couples to the instanton density of gauge fields including the hypermagnetic field. This coupling may give rise to baryogenesis in the early universe. After tracing out the gauge and matter degrees of freedom, a non-trivial effective potential for the angular component of the axion field is obtained. It is proposed that oscillations of this component…
Previous studies using numerical simulations have demonstrated that the shape of the cosmic web can be described by studying the Lagrangian displacement field. We extend these analyses, showing that it is now possible to perform a Lagrangian description of cosmic structure in the nearby Universe based on large-scale structure observations. Building upon recent Bayesian large-scale inference of initial conditions, we present a cosmographic analysis of the dark matter distribution and its evolution, referred to as the dark matter phase-space sheet, in the nearby universe as probed by the Sloan D…
Tidal stripping of dark matter from subhalos falling into the Milky Way produces narrow, cold tidal streams as well as more spatially extended "debris flows" in the form of shells, sheets, and plumes. Here we focus on the debris flow in the Via Lactea II simulation, and show that this incompletely phase-mixed material exhibits distinctive high velocity behavior. Unlike tidal streams, which may not necessarily intersect the Earth's location, debris flow is spatially uniform at 8 kpc and thus guaranteed to be present in the dark matter flux incident on direct detection experiments. At Earth-fram…
Images from the next generation of telescopes will enable strikingly detailed reconstruction of the dark matter distributions in galaxy cluster cores using strong gravitational lensing analysis. This will provide a key test of Lambda-CDM cosmology on cluster scales where tensions currently exist. Observed dark matter distributions will be compared directly to those realized in simulations, forgoing any assumptions about light tracing mass. The required observations are deep, multicolor, and high-resolution, ideally supplemented with spectra of faint objects. ACS onboard HST is capable of obtai…
We introduce the NEXUS algorithm for the identification of Cosmic Web environments: clusters, filaments, walls and voids. This is a multiscale and automatic morphological analysis tool that identifies all the cosmic structures in a scale free way, without preference for a certain size or shape. We develop the NEXUS method to incorporate the density, tidal field, velocity divergence and velocity shear as tracers of the Cosmic Web. We also present the NEXUS+ procedure which, taking advantage of a novel filtering of the density in logarithmic space, is very successful at identifying the filament …
We report the results of the first study of the multi-stream environment of dark matter haloes in cosmological N-body simulations in the LCDM cosmology. The full dynamical state of dark matter can be described as a three-dimensional sub-manifold in six dimensional phase space - the dark matter sheet. In our study we use a Lagrangian sub-manifold x = x(q,t) (where x and q are co-moving Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates respectively), which is dynamically equivalent to the dark matter sheet but is more convenient for numerical analysis. Our major results can be summarized as follows. At the re…
The powerful Lagrangian view of structure formation was essentially introduced to cosmology by Zel'dovich. In the current cosmological paradigm, a dark-matter-sheet 3D manifold, inhabiting 6D position-velocity phase space, was flat (with vanishing velocity) at the big bang. Afterward, gravity stretched and bunched the sheet together in different places, forming a cosmic web when projected to the position coordinates. Here, I explain some properties of an origami approximation, in which the sheet does not stretch or contract (an assumption that is false in general), but is allowed to fold. Even…
We use a 64$h^{-1}$Mpc dark matter (DM) only cosmological simulation to examine the large scale orientation of haloes and substructures with respect the cosmic web. A web classification scheme based on the velocity shear tensor is used to assign to each halo in the simulation a web type: knot, filament, sheet or void. Using $\sim10^6$ haloes that span ~3 orders of magnitude in mass the orientation of the halo's spin and the orbital angular momentum of subhaloes with respect to the eigenvectors of the shear tensor is examined. We find that the orbital angular momentum of subhaloes tends to alig…
The cosmic web is one of the most striking features of the distribution of galaxies and dark matter on the largest scales in the Universe. It is composed of dense regions packed full of galaxies, long filamentary bridges, flattened sheets and vast low density voids. The study of the cosmic web has focused primarily on the identification of such features, and on understanding the environmental effects on galaxy formation and halo assembly. As such, a variety of different methods have been devised to classify the cosmic web -- depending on the data at hand, be it numerical simulations, large sky…

Dark matter density is formally infinite at the location of caustic surfaces, where dark matter sheet folds in phase space. The caustics separate multi-stream regions with different number of streams. Volume elements change the parity by turning inside out when passing through the caustic stage. Being measure-zero structures, identification of caustics via matter density fields is usually restricted to fine-grained simulations. Instead a generic purely geometric algorithm can be employed to identify caustics directly by using triangulation of Lagrangian sub-manifold x(q, t) where x and q are E…
In this paper, we study the statistical properties of weak lensing peaks in light-cones generated from cosmological simulations. In order to assess the prospects of such observable as a cosmological probe, we consider simulations that include interacting Dark Energy (hereafter DE) models with coupling term between DE and Dark Matter. Cosmological models that produce a larger population of massive clusters have more numerous high signal-to-noise peaks; among models with comparable numbers of clusters those with more concentrated haloes produce more peaks. The most extreme model under investigat…
We reexamine sterile neutrino dark matter in gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ model. Improvements have been made by tracing and careful evaluation of the evolution of the number densities of sterile neutrinos $N$ and extra neutral gauge bosons $Z'$. As a result, the cosmologically-interesting gauge coupling of $U(1)_{B-L}$ for freeze-in sterile neutrinos turns out to be smaller than the values reported in the literature. This avoids the overproduction of $Z'$ so that it is consistent with the big bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background constraints on the effective number of neutrino specie…
The ANITA experiment, which is designed to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos, has reported the observation of two anomalous events, directed at angles of $27^{\circ}$ and $35^{\circ}$ with respect to the horizontal. At these angles, the Earth is expected to efficiently absorb ultra-high energy neutrinos, making the origin of these events unclear and motivating explanations involving physics beyond the Standard Model. In this study, we consider the possibility that ANITA's anomalous events are the result of Askaryan emission produced by exotic weakly interacting particles scattering elasticall…
