We propose a method for deforming an extended Galilei algebra that leads to a nonstandard realization of the Poincaré group with the Fock-Lorentz linear fractional transformations. The invariant parameter in these transformations has the dimension of length. Combining this deformation with the standard one (with an invariant velocity $c$) leads to the algebra of the symmetry group of the anti-de Sitter space in Beltrami coordinates. In this case, the action for free point particles contains the dimensional constants $R$ and $c$. The limit transitions lead to the ordinary ($R\to \infty$) or alternative ($c\to \infty$) but nevertheless relativistic kinematics.
We discuss kinematical properties of a free relativistic particle with deformed phase space in which momentum space is given by (a submanifold of) de Sitter space. We provide a detailed derivation of the action, Hamiltonian structure and equations of motion for such free particle. We study the action of deformed relativistic symmetries on the phase space and derive explicit formulas for the action of the deformed Poincare' group. Finally we provide a discussion on parametrization of the particle worldlines stressing analogies and differences with ordinary relativistic kinematics.
We present a way to derive a deformation of special relativistic kinematics (possible low energy signal of a quantum theory of gravity) from the geometry of a maximally symmetric curved momentum space. The deformed kinematics is fixed (up to change of coordinates in the momentum variables) by the algebra of isometries of the metric in momentum space. In particular, the well-known example of $κ$-Poincaré kinematics is obtained when one considers an isotropic metric in de Sitter momentum space such that translations are a subgroup of the isometry group, and for a Lorentz covariant algebra one ge…
We show how a deformed composition law of four-momenta can be used to define, at the classical level, a modified notion of spacetime for a system of two particles through the crossing of worldlines in particle interactions. We present a derivation of a generic relativistic isotropic deformed kinematics and discuss the complementarity and relations with other derivations based on $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra or on the geometry of a maximally symmetric momentum space.
The relativistic jerk, snap and all higher-order kinematical D-vectors are defined for the motion of a massive particle in a D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We illustrate the formalism with stationary motions, for which we provide a new, Lorentz covariant, classification. We generalize some cases to branes, explaining the relevance to uniform motion in a heat bath. We also consider some non-stationary motions, including motion with constant proper jerk, and free fall into a black hole as viewed from a GEMS perspective.
Doubly special relativity has been studied for the last twenty years as a way to go beyond the special relativistic kinematics, trying to capture residual effects of a quantum gravity theory. In particular, in doubly special relativity the Einstenian relativity principle is generalized, adding to the speed of light another relativistic invariant, the Planck energy. There are several papers in the literature showing a connection between this deformed kinematics and a curved momentum space. Here we review how such kinematics can be derived from geometrical ingredients in a rigorous way, and how …
We study the rest-frame instant form of a new formulation of relativistic perfect fluids in terms of new generalized Eulerian configuration coordinates. After the separation of the relativistic center of mass from the relative variables on the Wigner hyper-planes, we define orientational and shape variables for the fluid, viewed as a relativistic extended deformable body, by introducing dynamical body frames. Finally we define Dixon's multipoles for the fluid.
Deformed relativistic kinematics have been considered as a way to capture residual effects of quantum gravity. It has been shown that they can be understood geometrically in terms of a curved momentum space on a flat spacetime. In this article we present a systematic analysis under which conditions and how deformed relativistic kinematics, encoded in a momentum space metric on flat spacetime, can be lifted to curved spacetimes in terms of a self-consistent cotangent bundle geometry, which leads to purely geometric, geodesic motion of freely falling point particles. We comment how this construc…
In the context of departures from Special Relativity written as a momentum power expansion in the inverse of an ultraviolet energy scale M, we derive the constraints that the relativity principle imposes between coefficients of a deformed composition law, dispersion relation, and transformation laws, at first order in the power expansion. In particular, we find that, at that order, the consistency of a modification of the energy-momentum composition law fixes the modification in the dispersion relation. We therefore obtain the most generic modification of Special Relativity that preserves the …
There is a vast literature showing the connection between a deformed relativistic kinematics and a curved momentum space, and, in particular, how the former can be obtained from the geometrical properties of the latter. However, there is not any mention about the geometry of a multi-particle system making manifest a possible modification in the metric of one particle due to the presence of others. In this work we explore how a curved momentum metric depending on the particles involved in an interaction arises when considering a process. We also show that the principle of relative locality obta…
We initiate the study of non- and ultra-relativistic higher spin theories. For sake of simplicity we focus on the spin-3 case in three dimensions. We classify all kinematical algebras that can be obtained by all possible Inönü--Wigner contraction procedures of the kinematical algebra of spin-3 theory in three dimensional (anti-) de Sitter space-time. We demonstrate how to construct associated actions of Chern--Simons type, directly in the ultra-relativistic case and by suitable algebraic extensions in the non-relativistic case. We show how to give these kinematical algebras an infinite-dimensi…
Our proposal here is to set up the conceptual framework for an eventual {Theory of Everything}. We formulate the arena -language- to build up {\it any} QG. In particular, we show how the objects of fundamental theories, such as p-branes (strings, loops and others) could be posed in this language.
A deformation of special relativistic kinematics (possible signal of a theory of quantum gravity at low energies) leads to a modification of the notion of spacetime. At the classical level, this modification is required when one considers a model including single- or multi-interaction processes, for which absolute locality in terms of canonical space-time coordinates is lost. We discuss the different alternatives for observable effects in the propagation of a particle over very large distances that emerge from the new notion of spacetime. A central ingredient in the discussion is the cluster d…
We show that Dirac-Born-Infeld theory possesses a hidden invariance that enhances the local O(1,p) Lorentz symmetry on a Dirichlet p-brane to an O(1,p) x O(1,p) gauge group, encoding both an invariant velocity and acceleration (or length) scale. This enlarged gauge group predicts consequences for the kinematics of observers on Dirichlet branes, with admissible accelerations being bounded from above. An important lesson beyond string theory is that a fundamental length scale can be implemented into the kinematics of general relativity, whilst preserving both space-time as a smooth manifold and …
The Generalized Uncertainty Principle and the related minimum length are normally considered in non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics. Extending it to relativistic theories is important for having a Lorentz invariant minimum length and for testing the modified Heisenberg principle at high energies. In this paper, we formulate a relativistic Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We then use this to write the modified Klein-Gordon, Schrödinger and Dirac equations, and compute quantum gravity corrections to the relativistic hydrogen atom, particle in a box, and the linear harmonic oscillator.
We present a systematic derivation of the constraints that the relativity principle imposes between coefficients of a deformed (but rotational invariant) momentum composition law, dispersion relation, and momentum transformation laws, at first order in a power expansion of an ultraviolet energy scale. This work generalizes previous results to the case of particle-dependent relativistic kinematics, which can have interesting phenomenological applications that we explore in the second part of the manuscript.
We apply Lie algebra deformation theory to the problem of identifying the stable form of the quantum relativistic kinematical algebra. As a warm up, given Galileo's conception of spacetime as input, some modest computer code we wrote zeroes in on the Poincare-plus-Heisenberg algebra in about a minute. Further ahead, along the same path, lies a three dimensional deformation space, with an instability double cone through its origin. We give physical as well as geometrical arguments supporting our view that moment, rather than position operators, should enter as generators in the Lie algebra. Wit…
In the Wigner-covariant rest-frame instant form of dynamics it is possible to develop a relativistic kinematics for the N-body problem. The Wigner hyperplanes define the intrinsic rest frame and realize the separation of the center-of-mass. Three notions of {\it external} relativistic center of mass can be defined only in terms of the {\it external} Poincaré group realization. Inside the Wigner hyperplane, an {\it internal} unfaithful realization of the Poincaré group is defined. The three concepts of {\it internal} center of mass weakly {\it coincide} and are eliminated by the rest-frame cond…
Relativistic deformed kinematics are usually considered as a way to capture residual effects of a fundamental quantum gravity theory. These kinematics present a non-commutative addition law for the momenta, so that the total momentum of a multi-particle system depends on the specific ordering in which the momenta are composed. We explore in the present work how this property may be used to generate an asymmetry between particles and antiparticles through a particular ordering prescription, resulting in a violation of CPT symmetry. We study its consequences for muon decay, obtaining a differenc…
he necessary and sufficient conditions for a unit time-like vector field to be the unit velocity of a classical ideal gas are obtained. In a recent paper [Coll, Ferrando and Sáez, Phys. Rev D {\bf 99} (2019)] we have offered a purely hydrodynamic description of a classical ideal gas. Here we take one more step in reducing the number of variables necessary to characterize these media by showing that a plainly kinematic description can be obtained. We apply the results to obtain test solutions to the hydrodynamic equation that model the evolution in local thermal equilibrium of a classical ideal…
In non-relativistic mechanics the center of mass of an isolated system is easily separated out from the relative variables. For a N-body system these latter are usually described by a set of Jacobi normal coordinates, based on the clustering of the centers of mass of sub-clusters. The Jacobi variables are then the starting point for separating {\it orientational} variables, connected with the angular momentum constants of motion, from {\it shape} (or {\it vibrational}) variables. Jacobi variables, however, cannot be extended to special relativity. We show by group-theoretical methods that two …
We investigate the kinematics of the motion of an observer with constant proper acceleration (relativistic hyperbolic motion) in 1+1 and 1+3 dimensional Minkowski spacetimes. We provide explicit formulas for all the kinematic quantities up to the fourth proper time derivative (the Snap). In the 1+3 case, following a recent work of Pons and de Palol [Gen. Rel. Grav. 51 (2019) 80], a vectorial differential equation for the acceleration is obtained which by considering constant proper acceleration is turned into a nonlinear second order differential equation in terms of derivatives of the radius …
Recent data on supernovae favor high values of the cosmological constant. Spacetimes with a cosmological constant have non-relativistic kinematics quite different from Galilean kinematics. De Sitter spacetimes, vacuum solutions of Einstein's equations with a cosmological constant, reduce in the non-relativistic limit to Newton-Hooke spacetimes, which are non-metric homogeneous spacetimes with non-vanishing curvature. The whole non-relativistic kinematics would then be modified, with possible consequences to cosmology, and in particular to the missing-mass problem.
It is considered a model of compact Riemann surface in genus two, represented geometrically by two-parametric hyperbolic octagon with an order four automorphism and described algebraically by the corresponding Fuchsian group. Introducing the Fenchel--Nielsen variables, we compute the Weil--Petersson (WP) symplectic two-form for parameter space and analyze the closed isoperimetric orbits of octagons. WP-Area in parameter space and the canonical action--angle variables for the orbits are found. Exploiting the ideas from the loop quantum gravity, we generate relativistic kinematics by the Lorentz…
We consider transformations between uniformly accelerated systems, assuming that the Clock Hypothesis is false. We use the proper velocity-time description of events rather than the usual space-time description in order to obtain linear transformations. Based on the generalized principle of relativity and the ensuing symmetry, we obtain transformations of Lorentz-type. We predict the existence of a maximal acceleration and time dilation due to acceleration. We also predict a Doppler shift due to acceleration of the source in addition to the shift due to the source's velocity. Based on our resu…
When introducing special relativity, an elegant connection to familiar rules governing Galilean constant acceleration can be made, by describing first the discovery at high speeds that the clocks (as well as odometers) of different travelers may proceed at different rates. One may then show how to parameterize any given interval of constant acceleration with {\em either}: Newtonian (low-velocity approximation) time, inertial relativistic (unaccelerated observer) time, or traveler proper (accelerated observer) time, by defining separate velocities for each of these three kinematics as well. Kin…
We propose a new model which describes relativistic hydrodynamics and generalizes the standard Euler system of isentropic perfect fluids. Remarkably, our system admits a convex extension which allows us to transform it to a symmetric hyperbolic form. This result sheds new light even on the relativistic Euler system.
We consider the linear kinematics of large-scale peculiar motions in a perturbed Friedmann universe. In so doing, we take the viewpoint of the "real" observers that move along with the peculiar flow, relative to the smooth Hubble expansion. Using relativistic cosmological perturbation theory, we study the linear evolution of the peculiar velocity field, as well as the expansion/contraction, the shear and the rotation of the bulk motion. Our solutions show growth rates considerably stronger than those of the earlier treatments, which were mostly Newtonian. On scales near and beyond the Hubble r…
These notes present a critique of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framwork. The design proposal of the MINOS at Fermilab based on a two mass eigenstate framework may require serious reconsideration if there is strong mixing between all three flavors of neutrinos. For the LSND and KARMEN neutrino oscillation experiments, the amplitude of neutrino oscillation of the ``one mass scale dominance''framework vanishes for certain values of mixing angles as a result of opposite signs of two equal and opposite contributions. Recent astronomical observations leave open the possibility that…
The Chapman-Enskog method of solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation is generalized in order to admit a time-derivative term associated to a thermodynamic force in its first order solution. Both existence and uniqueness of such a solution are proved based on the standard theory of integral equations. The mathematical implications of the generalization here introduced are thoroughly discussed regarding the nature of heat as chaotic energy transfer in the context of relativity theory.
Classical point-particle relativistic lagrangians are constructed that generate the momentum-velocity and dispersion relations for quantum wave packets in Lorentz-violating effective field theory.
There is ongoing interest in adopting various tools and ideas from general relativity for optical applications and the study of light propagation through natural or engineered media. Here, the covariant kinematics of light propagating through arbitrary dielectric media in curved space-times are derived, allowing for analysis and tracing of congruences of light through media that may smoothly vary in character between vacuum, positively refracting, and negatively refracting; or null, timelike, and spacelike with respect to the background metric. The kinematics are then used to generalize the Ra…
The Finslerian post-Lorentzian kinematic transformations can explicitly be obtained under uni-directional breakdown of spatial isotropy, provided that the requirement that the relativistic unit hypersurface (indicatrix or mass shell) be a space of constant negative curvature is still fulfilled. The method consists in evaluating respective Finslerian tetrads and then treating them as the bases of inertial reference frames. The Transport Synchronization has rigorously been proven, which opens up the ways proper to favour the concept of one-way light velocity. Transition to the Hamiltonian treatm…
In our previous paper, based on the Carter & Quintana framework and the Damour-Soffel-Xu scheme, we deduced a complete and closed set of post-Newtonian dynamical equations for elastically deformable astronomical bodies. In this paper, we expand the general relativistic perturbation equations of elastic deformable bodies (field equations, stress-strain relation, Euler equation) in terms of Generalized Spherical Harmonics. This turns the set of complicated partial differential equations into a set of ordinary differential equations. This will be useful for numerical applications that mainly deal…
We present a general relativistic (GR) model of jet variability in active galactic nuclei due to orbiting blobs in helical motion along a funnel or cone shaped magnetic surface anchored to the accretion disk near the black hole. Considering a radiation pressure driven flow in the inner region, we find that it stabilizes the flow, yielding Lorentz factors ranging between 1.1 and 7 at small radii for reasonable initial conditions. Assuming these as inputs, simulated light curves (LCs) for the funnel model include Doppler and gravitational shifts, aberration, light bending, and time delay. These …
