We prove an Alexandrov type theorem for a quotient space of $\mathbb H^2\times \mathbb R$. More precisely we classify the compact embedded surfaces with constant mean curvature in the quotient of $\mathbb H^2\times \mathbb R$ by a subgroup of isometries generated by a parabolic translation along horocycles of $\mathbb H^2$ and a vertical translation. Moreover, we construct some examples of periodic minimal surfaces in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R$ and we prove a multi-valued Rado theorem for small perturbations of the helicoid in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R$.
We show that any n-dimensional nonnegatively curved Alexandrov space with the maximal possible number of extremal points is isometric to a quotient space of Euclidean n -space by an action of a crystallographic group. We describe all such actions.
We characterize Riemannian orbifolds with an upper curvature bound in the Alexandrov sense as reflectofolds, i.e. Riemannian orbifolds all of whose local groups are generated by reflections, with the same upper bound on the sectional curvature. Combined with a result by Lytchak--Thorbergsson this implies that a quotient of a Riemannian manifold by a closed group of isometries has locally bounded curvature (from above) in the Alexandrov sense if and only if it is a reflectofold.
We study a class of compact surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ introduced by Alexandrov and generalized by Nirenberg and prove a compactness result under suitable assumptions on induced metrics and Gauss curvatures.
We are concerned with hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant nonlocal (or fractional) mean curvature. This is the equation associated to critical points of the fractional perimeter under a volume constraint. Our results are twofold. First we prove the nonlocal analogue of the Alexandrov result characterizing spheres as the only closed embedded hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant mean curvature. Here we use the moving planes method. Our second result establishes the existence of periodic bands or "cylinders" in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with constant nonlocal mean curvature and bifurcatin…
In this paper we prove that in the class of metric measure spaces with Alexandrov curvature bounded from below the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition $RCD(K,N)$ with $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $N\in [1,\infty)$ is preserved under doubling and gluing constructions.
We study closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower Ricci curvature bound in the $\mathsf{CD}^*(K,N)$ sense, focusing our attention on those with positive or nonnegative Ricci curvature. First, we show that a closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(2,3)$-Alexandrov space must be homeomorphic to a spherical space form or to the suspension of $\mathbb{R}P^2$. We then classify closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(0,3)$-Alexandrov spaces.
For each $k\geq 3$, we construct a 1-parameter family of complete properly Alexandrov-embedded minimal surfaces in the Riemannian product space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ with genus $1$ and $k$ embedded ends asymptotic to vertical planes. We also obtain complete minimal surfaces with genus $1$ and $2k$ ends in the quotient of $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ by an arbitrary vertical translation. They all have dihedral symmetry with respect to $k$ vertical planes, as well as finite total curvature $-4kπ$. Finally, we also provide examples of complete properly Alexandrov-embedded minimal surfa…
In this paper we study minimal and constant mean curvature (cmc) periodic surfaces in H^2 x R. More precisely, we consider quotients of H^2 x R by discrete groups of isometries generated by horizontal hyperbolic translations f and/or a vertical translation T. In the quotient by the Z^2 subgroup of the isometry group generated by any f and T, we prove an Alexandrov-type theorem for cmc surfaces, i.e., an analysis of compact embedded cmc surfaces in such a quotient. The remainder of the paper is devoted to construct examples of periodic minimal surfaces in H^2 x R.
In \cite{LiWang2001complete1,LiWang2001complete2}, Li-Wang proved a splitting theorem for an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold with $Ric\geqslant -(n-1)$ and the bottom of spectrum $λ_0(M)=\frac{(n-1)^2}{4}$. For an n-dimensional compact manifold $M$ with $Ric\geqslant-(n-1)$ with the volume entropy $h(M)=n-1$, Ledrappier-Wang \cite{LeW2010volent} proved that the universal cover $\tilde{M}$ is isometric to the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$. We will prove analogue theorems for Alexandrov spaces.
We study three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower curvature bound, focusing on extending three classical results on three-dimensional manifolds: First, we show that a closed three-dimensional Alexandrov space of positive curvature, with at least one topological singularity, must be homeomorphic to the suspension of the real projective plane; we use this to classify, up to homeomorphism, closed, positively curved Alexandrov spaces of dimension three. Second, we classify closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of nonnegative curvature. Third, we study the well-known Poincaré Conjectur…
We prove a rigidity result in the sphere which allows us to generalize a result about smooth convex hypersurfaces in the sphere by Do Carmo-Warner to convex $C^2$-hypersurfaces. We apply these results to prove $C^{1,β}$-convergence of inverse F-curvature flows in the sphere to an equator in \mathbb{S}^{n+1} for embedded, closed, strictly convex initial hypersurfaces. The result holds for large classes of curvature functions including the mean curvature and arbitrary powers of the Gauss curvature. We use this result to prove Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities in the sphere.
We apply the evolution method to present a new proof of the Alexandrov type theorem for constant anisotropic mean curvature hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$.
We prove the existence of steady Kähler-Ricci solitons on equivariant crepant resolutions of $\mathbb{C}^n/G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $SU(n)$.
Alexandrov's Soap Bubble theorem dates back to $1958$ and states that a compact embedded hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with constant mean curvature must be a sphere. For its proof, A.D. Alexandrov invented his reflection priciple. In $1982$, R. Reilly gave an alternative proof, based on integral identities and inequalities, connected with the torsional rigidity of a bar. In this article we study the stability of the spherical symmetry: the question is how much a hypersurface is near to a sphere, when its mean curvature is near to a constant in some norm. We present a stability estimate that s…
In this paper, we study the following prescribed Gaussian curvature problem $$K=\frac{\tilde{f}(θ)}{ϕ(ρ)^{α-2}\sqrt{ϕ(ρ)^2+|\bar{\nabla}ρ|^2}},$$ a generalization of the Alexandrov problem ($α=n+1$) in hyperbolic space, where $\tilde{f}$ is a smooth positive function on $\mathbb{S}^{n}$, $ρ$ is the radial function of the hypersurface, $ϕ(ρ)=\sinhρ$ and $K$ is the Gauss curvature. By a flow approach, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the above equations when $α\geq n+1$. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in smooth category for the Alexandrov problem in $\mathbb{H}^{n+…
In this paper, under suitable settings, we can obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of Hessian quotient equations with Dirichlet boundary condition in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$, which can be seen as a prescribed curvature problem and a continuous work of [12].
Let $X\in\text{Alex}\,^n(-1)$ be an $n$-dimensional Alexandrov space with curvature $\ge -1$. Let the $r$-scale $(k,ε)$-singular set $\mathcal S^k_{ε,\,r}(X)$ be the collection of $x\in X$ so that $B_r(x)$ is not $εr$-close to a ball in any splitting space $\mathbb R^{k+1}\times Z$. We show that there exists $C(n,ε)>0$ and $β(n,ε)>0$, independent of the volume, so that for any disjoint collection $\big\{B_{r_i}(x_i):x_i\in \mathcal S_{ε,\,βr_i}^k(X)\cap B_1, \,r_i\le 1\big\}$, the packing estimate $\sum r_i^k\le C$ holds. Consequently, we obtain the Hausdorff measure estimates $\mathcal H^k(\m…
This is a survey paper on various results relates to the following theorem first proved by A.D. Alexandrov: \textit{Let $S$ be an analytic convex sphere-homeomorphic surface in $\mathbb R^3$ and let $k_1(\boldsymbol{x})\leqslant k_2(\boldsymbol{x})$ be its principal curvatures at the point $\boldsymbol{x}$. If the inequalities $k_1(\boldsymbol{x})\leqslant k\leqslant k_2(\boldsymbol{x})$ hold true with some constant $k$ for all $\boldsymbol{x}\in S$ then $S$ is a sphere.} The imphases is on a result of Y. Martinez-Maure who first proved that the above statement is not valid for convex $C^2$-su…
In this paper we develop the theory of properly immersed minimal surfaces in the quotient space $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R/G,$ where $G$ is a subgroup of isometries generated by a vertical translation and a horizontal isometry in $\mathbb H^2$ without fixed points. The horizontal isometry can be either a parabolic translation along horocycles in $\mathbb H^2$ or a hyperbolic translation along a geodesic in $\mathbb H^2.$ In fact, we prove that if a properly immersed minimal surface in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R/G$ has finite total curvature then its total curvature is a multiple of $2π,$ and…
Let $S$ be a surface with a metric $d$ satisfying an upper curvature bound in the sense of Alexandrov (i.e. via triangle comparison). We show that an almost conformal harmonic map from a surface into $(S,d)$ is a branched covering. As a consequence, if $(S,d)$ is homeomorphically equivalent to the 2-sphere $\mathbb S^2$, then it is conformally equivalent to $\mathbb S^2$.
We obtain a classification result for rotational surfaces in the Heisenberg space and the universal cover of the special linear group, whose mean curvature is given as a prescribed $C^1$ function depending on their angle function. We show that these surfaces behave like the Delaunay surfaces of constant mean curvature, under some assumptions on the prescribed function. In contrast with the constant mean curvature case, we exhibit the existence of rotational, embedded tori, providing counterexamples of the Alexandrov problem for this class of immersed surfaces.
In this paper we study the moduli space of properly Alexandrov-embedded, minimal annuli in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ with horizontal ends. We say that the ends are horizontal when they are graphs of $\mathcal{C}^{2, α}$ functions over $\partial_\infty \mathbb{H}^2$. Contrary to expectation, we show that one can not fully prescribe the two boundary curves at infinity, but rather, one can prescribe the bottom curve, but the top curve only up to a translation and a tilt, along with the position of the neck and the vertical flux of the annulus. We also prove general existence theorems for m…
In this paper we use the Alexandrov Reflection Method to obtain a characterization to embedded CMC capillary annulus $Σ^2 \subset \mathbb{B}^3$. In especial, but using a new strategy, we present a new characterization to the critical catenoid. Precisely, we show that $Σ\subset \mathbb{B}^3$ being an embedded minimal free boundary annulus in $\mathbb{B}^3$ such that $\partial Σ$ is invariant under reflection through a coordinates planes, then $Σ$ is the critical catenoid. This work is part of the second author thesis which was written in 2019.
We consider an $n$-dimensional projective space $\mathbb{P}_n$ ($n\geq2$) and a fixed point $A$ on it. Let $F(\mathbb{P}_n)$ be the manifold of all the projective frames of $\mathbb{P}_n$ having $A$ as their first vertice. We define the action of stabilizer G of $A$ in the projective group $GP(n)$ in a natural way. The Lie group epimorphism $β\colon G\to GL(V)$ acts as follows $g\mapsto d_A g$ where $V=T_A \mathbb{P}_n$. We study the geometry of orbit space $Φ(\mathbb{P}_n)$ of the space $F(\mathbb{P}_n)$ under the action of the kernel $H= kerβ$ of the epimorphism $β$. By applying some $n$-dim…
We prove the following quantitative version of the celebrated Soap Bubble Theorem of Alexandrov. Let $S$ be a $C^2$ closed embedded hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq1$, and denote by $osc(H)$ the oscillation of its mean curvature. We prove that there exists a positive $\varepsilon$, depending on $n$ and upper bounds on the area and the $C^2$-regularity of $S$, such that if $osc(H) \leq \varepsilon$ then there exist two concentric balls $B_{r_i}$ and $B_{r_e}$ such that $S \subset \overline{B}_{r_e} \setminus B_{r_i}$ and $r_e -r_i \leq C \, osc(H)$, with $C$ depending only on $n$ and …
We prove that all entire smooth strictly convex self-shrinking solutions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ to the Hessian quotient flows must be quadratic. This generalizes the rigidity theorem for entire self-shrinking solutions to the Lagrangian mean curvature flow in pseudo-Euclidean space due to Ding-Xin \cite{DX}. Moreover, we show that our argument works for a larger class of equations. In particular, we obtain rigidity results for entire self-shrinking solutions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ to the Kähler-Ricci flow under certain conditions.
In $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ there is a two-parameter family of properly embedded minimal annuli foliated by circles. In this paper we show that this family contains all properly embedded minimal annuli. We use the description of minimal annuli in $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ by periodic harmonic maps $G : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{S}^2$ of finite type. Due to the algebraic geometric correspondence of Hitchin [14], these harmonic maps are parametrized by hyperelliptic algebraic curves together with Abelian differentials with prescribed poles. We deform annuli by deforming spectral data…
In this paper, we study the Bergman metric of a finite ball quotient $\mathbb{B}^n/Γ$, where $Γ\subseteq \mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{B}^n)$ is a finite, fixed point free, abelian group. We prove that this metric is Kähler--Einstein if and only if $Γ$ is trivial, i.e., when the ball quotient $\mathbb{B}^n/Γ$ is the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ itself. As a consequence, we establish a characterization of the unit ball among normal Stein spaces with isolated singularities and abelian fundamental groups in terms of the existence of a Bergman-Einstein metric.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain (with smooth boundary) on the hyperbolic plane $\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)$, of center at origin and radius $1$, in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$. In this paper, by using a priori estimates, we can establish Pogorelov type estimates of $k$-convex solutions to a class of Hessian quotient equations defined over $Ω\subset\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)$ and with the vanishing Dirichlet boundary condition.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth Riemannian manifold and $\mathsf{G}$ a compact Lie group acting on $M$ effectively and by isometries. It is well known that a lower bound of the sectional curvature of $(M,g)$ is again a bound for the curvature of the quotient space, which is an Alexandrov space of curvature bounded below. Moreover, the analogous stability property holds for metric foliations and submersions. The goal of the paper is to prove the corresponding stability properties for synthetic Ricci curvature lower bounds. Specifically, we show that such stability holds for quotients of $\mathsf{RCD}^{…
We prove the existence of a pair $(Σ,\, Γ)$, where $Σ$ is a compact Riemann surface with $\text{genus}(Σ)\, \geq\, 2$, and $Γ\, \subset\, {\mathrm SL}(2, \mathbb C)$ is a cocompact lattice, such that there is a generically injective holomorphic map $Σ\, \longrightarrow\, {\mathrm SL}(2, \mathbb C)/Γ$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Huckleberry and Winkelmann \cite{HW} and by Ghys \cite{Gh}.
We prove that the uniformizing map of any arithmetic quotient, as well as the period map associated to any pure polarized $\mathbb{Z}$-variation of Hodge structure $\mathbb{V}$ on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$, are topologically tame. As an easy corollary of these results and of Peterzil-Starchenko's o-minimal GAGA theorem we obtain that the Hodge locus of $(S, \mathbb{V})$ is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties of $S$ (a result originally due to Cattani-Deligne-Kaplan).
We propose an infinite-dimensional generalization of Kronheimer's construction of families of hyperkahler manifolds resolving flat orbifold quotients of $\mathbb{R}^4$. As in [Kro89], these manifolds are constructed as hyperkahler quotients of affine spaces. This leads to a study of \emph{singular equivariant instantons} in various dimensions. In this paper, we study singular equivariant Nahm data to produce the family of $D_2$ asymptotically locally flat (ALF) manifolds as a deformation of the flat orbifold $(\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1)/Z_2$. We furthermore introduce a notion of stability for Na…
