We investigate the entanglement spectra arising from sharp real-space partitions of the system for quantum Hall states. These partitions differ from the previously utilized orbital and particle partitions and reveal complementary aspects of the physics of these topologically ordered systems. We show, by constructing one to one maps to the particle partition entanglement spectra, that the counting of the real-space entanglement spectra levels for different particle number sectors versus their angular momentum along the spatial partition boundary is equal to the counting of states for the system with a number of (unpinned) bulk quasiholes excitations corresponding to the same particle and flux numbers. This proves that, for an ideal model state described by a conformal field theory, the real-space entanglement spectra level counting is bounded by the counting of the conformal field theory edge modes. This bound is known to be saturated in the thermodynamic limit (and at finite sizes for certain states). Numerically analyzing several ideal model states, we find that the real-space entanglement spectra indeed display the edge modes dispersion relations expected from their corresponding conformal field theories. We also numerically find that the real-space entanglement spectra of Coulomb interaction ground states exhibit a series of branches, which we relate to the model state and (above an entanglement gap) to its quasiparticle-quasihole excitations. We also numerically compute the entanglement entropy for the nu=1 integer quantum Hall state with real-space partitions and compare against the analytic prediction. We find that the entanglement entropy indeed scales linearly with the boundary length for large enough systems, but that the attainable system sizes are still too small to provide a reliable extraction of the sub-leading topological entanglement entropy term.
We report distinct nonanalytic signatures in the spin-orbit entanglement of a 2D electron gas with Rashba interactions at integer values of the filling factor and at certain level crossings. The accompanying sharp changes in the bulk spin-orbit entanglement entropy can be probed by measuring the fluctuation in the transverse spin polarization of the electron gas.
We study the quantum entanglement structure of integer quantum Hall states via the reduced density matrix of spatial subregions. In particular, we examine the eigenstates, spectrum and entanglement entropy (EE) of the density matrix for various ground and excited states, with or without mass anisotropy. We focus on an important class of regions that contain sharp corners or cusps, leading to a geometric angle-dependent contribution to the EE. We unravel surprising relations by comparing this corner term at different fillings. We further find that the corner term, when properly normalized, has …
Entanglement Spectrum as a Generalization of Entanglement Entropy: Identification of Topological Order in Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall Effect States
We propose and analyse a scheme for performing a long-range entangling gate for qubits encoded in electron spins trapped in semiconductor quantum dots. Our coupling makes use of an electrostatic interaction between the state-dependent charge configurations of a singlet-triplet qubit and the edge modes of a quantum Hall droplet. We show that distant singlet-triplet qubits can be selectively coupled, with gate times that can be much shorter than qubit dephasing times and faster than decoherence due to coupling to the edge modes. Based on parameters from recent experiments, we argue that fideliti…
Generally speaking, the entanglement entropy (EE) between two subregions of a gapped quantum many-body state is proportional to the area/length of their interface due to the short range quantum correlation. However, the so-called area law is violated logarithmically in a quantum critical phase. Moreover, the subleading correction exists in a long range entangled topological phases. It is referred to as topological EE which is related to the quantum dimension of the collective excitation in the bulk. Further more, if a non-smooth sharp angle is in the presence of the subsystem boundary, a unive…
In this paper, we study $(2+1)$-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall states, i.e. band insulators with quantized Hall conductance, using the exact holographic mapping. The exact holographic mapping is an approach to holographic duality which maps the quantum anomalous Hall state to a different state living in $(3+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space. By studying topological response properties and the entanglement spectrum, we demonstrate that the holographic dual theory of a quantum anomalous Hall state is a $(3+1)$-dimensional topological insulator. The dual description enables a new characterizat…
Boundaries constitute a rich playground for quantum many-body systems because they can lead to novel degrees of freedom such as protected boundary states in topological phases. Here, we study the groundstate of integer quantum Hall systems in the presence of boundaries through the reduced density matrix of a spatial region. We work in the lowest Landau level and choose our region to intersect the boundary at arbitrary angles. The entanglement entropy (EE) contains a logarithmic contribution coming from the chiral edge modes, and matches the corresponding conformal field theory prediction. We u…
Entanglement properties are routinely used to characterize phases of quantum matter in theoretical computations. For example the spectrum of the reduced density matrix, or so-called "entanglement spectrum", has become a widely used diagnostic for universal topological properties of quantum phases. However, while being convenient to calculate theoretically, it is notoriously hard to measure in experiments. Here we use the IBM quantum computer to make the first ever measurement of the entanglement spectrum of a symmetry-protected topological state. We are able to distinguish its entanglement spe…
We present a mainly analytical study of the entanglement spectrum of Bernal-stacked graphene bilayers in the presence of trigonal warping in the energy spectrum. Upon tracing out one layer, the entanglement spectrum shows qualitative geometric differences to the energy spectrum of a graphene monolayer. However, topological quantities such as Berry phase type contributions to Chern numbers agree. The latter analysis involves not only the eigenvalues of the entanglement Hamiltonian but also its eigenvectors. We also discuss the entanglement spectra resulting from tracing out other sublattices. A…
Entanglement plays an important role in our ability to understand, simulate, and harness quantum many-body phenomena. In this work, we investigate the entanglement spectrum for open one-dimensional systems, and propose a natural quantifier for how much a 1D quantum state is entangled while being subject to decoherence. We demonstrate our method using a simple case of single-particle evolution and find that the open system entanglement spectrum is composed of generalized concurrence values, as well as quantifiers of the state's purity. Our proposed entanglement spectrum can be directly obtained…
We perform an analytical study of the energy and entanglement spectrum of non-interacting fermionic bilayer honeycomb lattices in the presence of trigonal warping in the energy spectrum, on-site energy difference and uniform magnetic field. Employing single particle correlation functions, we present an explicit form for layer-layer entanglement Hamiltonian whose spectrum is entanglement spectrum. We demonstrate that in the absence of trigonal warping, at zero on-site energy difference exact correspondence is established between entanglement spectrum and energy spectrum of monolayer which means…
Entanglement is one of the most fundamental features of quantum systems. In this work, we obtain the entanglement spectrum and entropy of Floquet noninteracting fermionic lattice models and build their connections with Floquet topological phases. Topological winding and Chern numbers are introduced to characterize the entanglement spectrum and eigenmodes. Correspondences between the spectrum and topology of entanglement Hamiltonians under periodic boundary conditions and topological edge states under open boundary conditions are further established. The theory is applied to Floquet topological…
The edge of the electronic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system obeys the law of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory due to its intrinsic topological properties and the relation of bulk-edge correspondence. However, in a realistic experimental system, such as the usual Hall bar setup, the soften of the background confinement potential can induce the reconstruction of the edge spectrum which breaks the chirality and universality of the FQH edge. The entanglement spectrum (ES) of the FQH ground state has the same counting structure as that in the energy spectrum indicating the topological charact…
The bulk polarization is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant characterizing non-interacting systems in one dimension with chiral or particle-hole symmetries. We show that the bulk polarization can always be determined from the single-particle entanglement spectrum, even in the absence of symmetries that quantize it. In the symmetric case, the known relation between the bulk polarization and the number of virtual topological edge modes is recovered. We use the bulk polarization to compute Chern numbers in 1D and 2D, which illuminates their known relation to the entanglement spectrum. Further…
We study the properties of the entanglement spectrum in gapped non-interacting non-Hermitian systems, and its relation to the topological properties of the system Hamiltonian. Two different families of entanglement Hamiltonians can be defined in non-Hermitian systems, depending on whether we consider only right (or equivalently only left) eigenstates or a combination of both left and right eigenstates. We show that their entanglement spectra can still be computed efficiently, as in the Hermitian limit. We discuss how symmetries of the Hamiltonian map into symmetries of the entanglement spectru…
We study how the entanglement spectrum relaxes to its steady state in one-dimensional quadratic systems after a quantum quench. In particular we apply the saddle point expansion to the dimerized chains and 1-D p-wave superconductors. We find that the entanglement spectrum always exhibits a power-law relaxation superimposed with oscillations at certain characteristic angular frequencies. For the dimerized chains, we find that the exponent $ν$ of the power-law decay is always $3/2$. For 1-D p-wave superconductors, however, we find that depending on the initial and final Hamiltonian, the exponent…
General nonequilibrium quantum transport equations are derived for a coupled system of charge carriers, Dirac spin, isospin (or valley spin), and pseudospin, such as either one of the band, layer, impurity, and boundary pseudospins. Limiting cases are obtained for one, two or three different kinds of spin ocurring in a system. We show that a characteristic integer number $N_{s}$ determines the formal form of spin quantum transport equations, irrespective of the type of spins or pseudospins, as well as the maximal entanglement entropy. The results may shed a new perspective on the mechanism lea…
We investigate topological properties of Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ bilayers in the (111) plane using entanglement measures. Electronic structures are studied using multi-orbital tight-binding model, with structural stability confirmed through first-principles calculations. Topologically non-trivial nature of Bi bilayer is proved by the presence of spectral flow in the entanglement spectrum. We consider topological phase transitions driven by a composition change $x$, an applied external electric field in pure Bi, and strain in pure Sb. Composition- and strain-induced phase transitions reveal a finite…
