It is well known that the transport properties of single-electron transistors with a superconducting island and normal-conducting leads (NSN SET) may depend on whether or not there is a single quasiparticle on the island. This parity effect has pronounced consequences for the linear transport properties. Here we analyze the thermopower of NSN SET with and without parity effect, for entirely realistic values of device parameters. Besides a marked dependence of the thermopower on the superconducting gap $Δ$ we observe an enhancement in the parity regime which is accompanied by a dramatic increase of the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. The latter can be explained within a simple re-interpretation of ZT in terms of averages and variances of transport energies.
We study thermoelectric phenomena in a system consisting of strongly correlated quantum dot coupled to external leads in the Kondo regime. We calculate linear and nonlinear electrical and thermal conductance and thermopower of the quantum dot and discuss the role of asymmetry in the couplings to external electrodes. In the linear regime electrical and thermal conductances are modified, while thermopower remains unchanged. In the nonlinear regime the Kondo resonance in differential conductance develops at non-zero source-drain voltage, which has important consequences on thermoelectric properti…
We study the thermopower of a quantum dot weakly coupled to two reservoirs by tunnel junctions. At low temperatures the transport through the dot is suppressed by charging effects (Coulomb blockade). As a result the thermopower shows an oscillatory dependence on the gate voltage. We study this dependence in the limit of low temperatures where the transport through the dot is dominated by the processes of inelastic cotunneling. We also obtain a crossover formula for intermediate temperatures which connects our cotunneling results to the known sawtooth behavior in the sequential tunneling regime…
We study thermal conductance and thermopower of a metallic single-electron transistor beyond the limit of weak tunnel coupling. Employing both a systematic second-order perturbation expansion and a non-perturbative approximation scheme, we find, in addition to sequential and cotunneling contributions, terms that are associated with the renormalization of system parameters due to quantum fluctuations. The latter can be identified by their logarithmic temperature dependence that is typical for many-channel Kondo correlations. In particular, the temperature dependence of thermopower, which provid…
We calculate the thermoelectric power (or thermopower) of many semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) within a diameter range 0.5-1.5 nm by using the Boltzmann transport formalism combined with an extended tight-binding model. We find that the thermopower of s-SWNTs increases as the tube diameter decreases. For some s-SWNTs with diameters less than 0.6 nm, the thermopower can reach a value larger than 2000 μV/K at room temperature, which is about 6 to 10 times larger than that found in commonly used thermoelectric materials. The large thermopower values may be attributed to the …
We have studied thermoelectric effect of a Kane-Mele normal-insulator-superconductor (KMNIS) junction at ultra-low temperatures using a modified version of the well-known Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory. Since both the (electronic) charge and thermal current due to the carriers are sensitive to the strengths of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) present in the Kane-Mele model, a tunability of this junction device with regard to its thermoelectric properties can be experimentally achieved by certain techniques that are used to manipulate the values of the spin-orbit couplings. We have computed…
We study Coulomb blockade oscillations of thermoelectric coefficients of a single electron transistor based on a quantum dot strongly coupled to one of the leads by a quantum point contact. At temperatures below the charging energy E_C the transport of electrons is dominated by strong inelastic cotunneling. In this regime we find analytic expressions for the thermopower as a function of temperature T and the reflection amplitude $r$ in the contact. In the case when the electron spins are polarized by a strong external magnetic field, the thermopower shows sinusoidal oscillations as a function …
Detailed measurements of the longitudinal thermopower of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level are reported. Clear signatures of numerous fractional quantized Hall states, including those at $ν= 5/2$ and 7/3, are observed in the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the thermopower. An abrupt collapse of the thermopower is observed below about $T= 40$ mK at those filling factors where re-entrant insulating electronic states have been observed in conventional resistive transport studies. The thermopower observed at $ν= 5/2$ is discussed in the context of recent theo…
We study the thermoelectric transport of a small metallic island weakly coupled to two electrodes by tunnel junctions. In the Coulomb blockade regime, in the case when the ground state of the system corresponds to an even number of electrons on the island, the main mechanism of electron transport at lowest temperatures is elastic cotunneling. In this regime, the transport coefficients strongly depend on the realization of the random impurity potential or the shape of the island. Using the random-matrix theory, we calculate the thermopower and the thermoelectric kinetic coefficient and study th…
The thermoelectric response of HgTe quantum wells in the state of two-dimensional topological insulator (2D TI) has been studied experimentally. Ambipolar thermopower, typical for an electron-hole system, has been observed across the charge neutrality point, where the carrier type changes from electrons to holes according to the resistance measurements. The hole-type thermopower is much stronger than the electron-type one. The thermopower linearly increases with temperature. We present a theoretical model which accounts for both the edge and bulk contributions to the electrical conductivity an…
We present a linear-response theory for the thermopower of a single-electron transistor consisting of a superconducting island weakly coupled to two normal-conducting leads (NSN SET). The thermopower shows oscillations with the same periodicity as the conductance and is rather sensitive to the size of the superconducting gap. In particular, the previously studied sawtooth-like shape of the thermopower for a normal-conducting single-electron device is qualitatively changed even for small gap energies.
We propose a possible route to achieve high thermoelectric efficiency in molecular junctions by combining a local chemical tuning of the molecular electronic states with the use of semiconducting electrodes. The former allows to control the position of the HOMO transmission resonance with respect to the Fermi energy while the latter fulfills a twofold purpose: the suppression of electron-like contributions to the thermopower and the cut-off of the HOMO transmission tails into the semiconductor band gap. As a result a large thermopower can be obtained. Our results strongly suggest that large fi…
Interference effects in quantum dots between different transport channels can lead to a strong suppression of conductance, which cuts like a canyon through the common conductance plot [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 186804 (2010)]. In the present work, we consider the thermoelectric transport properties of the canyon of conductance suppression using the second-order von Neumann approach. We observe a characteristic signal for the zeros of the thermopower. This demonstrates that thermoelectric measurements are an interesting complimentary tool to study complex phenomena for transport through confined sy…
Thermoelectric measurements for graphene ribbons are currently performed on samples that include atomic disorder via defects and irregular edges. In this work, we investigate the thermopower or Seebeck coefficient of graphene ribbons within the linear response theory and the Landauer formalism, and we consider the diffusive regime taken as a limit of the ribbon aspect ratio. We find that the thermopower and the electronic conductivity depend not only on the aspect ratio, but also on chemical potential and temperature, which are set here as key parameters. The obtained numerical results with te…
In this Letter we study thermoelectric effects in ultra small quantum dots. We study the behaviour of the thermopower, Peltier coefficient and thermal conductance both in the sequencial tunneling regime and in the regime where Kondo correlations develope. Both cases of linear response and non-equilibrium induced by strong temperature gradients are considered. The thermopower is a very sensitive tool to detect Kondo correlations. It changes sign both as a function of temperature and temperature gradient. We also discuss violations of the Wiedemann-Franz law.
We study thermoelectric effects in Kondo correlated quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes by calculating conductance, thermopower and thermal conductance in the Kondo regime. We also study the effect of the asymmetry in the coupling to the leads, which has important consequences for anti-parallel magnetization configuration. We discuss the thermoelectric figure of merit, tunnel magnetoresistance and violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in this system. The results agree with recently measured thermopower of the quantum dot defined in a two dimensional electron gas.
We report electrical conductance and thermopower measurements on InAs nanowires synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Gate modulation of the thermopower of individual InAs nanowires with diameter around 20nm is obtained over T=40 to 300K. At low temperatures (T< ~100K), oscillations in the thermopower and power factor concomitant with the stepwise conductance increases are observed as the gate voltage shifts the chemical potential of electrons in InAs nanowire through quasi-one-dimensional (1D) sub-bands. This work experimentally shows the possibility to modulate semiconductor nanowire's t…
We investigate the finite-frequency thermal transport through a quantum dot subject to strong interactions, by providing an exact, nonperturbative formalism that allows us to carry out a systematic analysis of the thermopower at any frequency. Special emphasis is put on the dc and high-frequency limits. We demonstrate that, in the Kondo regime, the ac thermopower is characterized by a universal function that we determine numerically.
Molecular junctions are a versatile test bed for investigating thermoelectricity on the nanoscale1-10 and contribute to the design of new cost-effective environmentally-friendly organic thermoelectric materials11. It has been suggested that transport resonances associated with the discrete molecular levels would play a key role in the thermoelectric performance12,13, but no direct experimental evidence has been reported. Here we study single-molecule junctions of the endohedral fullerene Sc3N@C80 connected to gold electrodes using a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). We find that the magnit…
The thermoelectric response of 80-nm-thick strained HgTe films of a three-dimensional topological insulator (3D TI) has been studied experimentally. An ambipolar thermopower is observed where the Fermi energy moves from conducting to the valence bulk band. The comparison between theory and experiment shows that the thermopower is mostly due to the phonon drag contribution. In the region where the 2D Dirac electrons coexist with bulk hole states, the Seebeck coefficient is modified due to 2D electron - 3D hole scattering.
We study thermoelectric properties of the system composed of a monoatomic chain on a surface and additional electrode coupled to the chain, which can be an STM tip. In particular, we are interested in thermopower, electric and thermal conductance, Wiedemann-Franz relation and thermoelectric figure of merit, which is a direct measure of the usefulness of the system for applications. We discuss the modifications of the STM wire topography due to temperature gradient between the electrodes. Finally, we also make connection to STM experiment, in which the thermopower has been directly measured, sh…
Recent breakthroughs in quantum-dot circuit-quantum-electrodynamics (circuit-QED) systems are important both from a fundamental perspective and from the point of view of quantum photonic devices. However, understanding the applications of such setups as potential thermoelectric diodes and transistors has been missing. In this paper, via the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function approach, we show that cavity-coupled double quantum-dots can serve as excellent quantum thermoelectric diodes and transistors. Using an enhanced perturbation approach based on polaron-transformations, we find non-mon…
Using density functional theory combined with a Green's function scattering approach, we examine the thermoelectric properties of hetero-nanoribbons formed from alternating lengths of graphene and boron nitride. In such structures, the boron nitride acts as a tunnel barrier, which weakly couples states in the graphene, to form mini-bands . In un-doped nanoribbons, the mini bands are symmetrically positioned relative to the Fermi energy and do not enhance thermoelectric performance significantly. In contrast, when the ribbons are doped by electron donating or electron accepting adsorbates, the …
We describe nonlinear phonon-thermoelectric devices where charge current and electronic and phononic heat currents are coupled, driven by voltage and temperature biases, when phonon-assisted inelastic processes dominate the transport. Our thermoelectric transistors and rectifiers can be realized in a gate-tunable double quantum-dot system embedded in a nanowire which is realizable within current technology. The inelastic electron-phonon scattering processes are found to induce pronounced charge, heat, and cross rectification effects, as well as a thermal transistor effect that, remarkably, can…
Many thermoelectrics like Bi exhibit Rashba spin-orbit surface bands for which topological insulator behavior consisting of ultrahigh mobilities and enhanced thermopower has been predicted. Bi nanowires realize surface-only electronic transport since they become bulk insulators when they undergo the bulk semimetal-semiconductor transition as a result of quantum confinement for diameters close to 50 nm. We studied 20-, 30-, 50- and 200-nm trigonal Bi wires. Shubnikov-de Haas magnetoresistance oscillations caused by surface electrons and bulklike holes enable the determination of their densities…
The thermoelectric effect is the generation of an electrical voltage from a temperature gradient in a solid material due to the diffusion of free charge carriers from hot to cold. Identifying materials with large thermoelectric response is crucial for the development of novel electric generators and coolers. In this paper we consider theoretically the thermopower of Dirac/Weyl semimetals subjected to a quantizing magnetic field. We contrast their thermoelectric properties with those of traditional heavily-doped semiconductors and we show that, under a sufficiently large magnetic field, the the…
Giant thermoelectric effects are known to arise at the interface between superconductors and strongly polarized ferromagnets, enabling the construction of efficient thermoelectric generators. We predict that the thermopower of such a generator can be completely controlled by a magnetic input signal: Not only can the thermopower be toggled on and off by rotating a magnet, but it can even be entirely reversed. This in situ control diverges from conventional thermoelectrics, where the thermopower is usually fixed by the device design.
Using a first principles approach to electron transport, we calculate the electrical and thermoelectrical transport properties of a series of molecular wires containing benzo-difuran subunits. We demonstrate that the side groups introduce Fano resonances, the energy of which is changing with the electronegativity of selected atoms in it. We also study the relative effect of single, double or triple bonds along the molecular backbone and find that single bonds yield the highest thermopower, approximately 22$μ$V/K at room temperature, which is comparable with the highest measured values for sing…
We investigate the low-temperature thermoelectric properties of three-dimensional nodal-line semimetals within the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism. Considering short-range interaction between electrons and scattering agents, we calculate the anisotropic relaxation times and then obtain the charge conductivity and thermopower along the radial and the axial directions with respect to the nodal-line plane. Increasing the carrier concentration, a topological transition in the shape of the Fermi surface from a torus into an ellipsoid signal as a sharp change in the thermopower. An adequate treatm…
Using the conformal field theory approach to the thermoelectric characteristics of fractional quantum Hall states, previously developed in Nucl. Phys. B 894 (2015) 284, we show that the thermoelectric power factor of Coulomb-blockaded islands, realized by point contacts in Fabry--Pérot interferometers in the $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion Hall states, could give reliable signatures for distinguishing the topological orders of different quantum Hall states having identical electric properties. For example, while the conductance peak patterns in the Coulomb blockade regime for such states are practi…
Using first-principles approaches, we have investigated the thermoelectric properties and the energy conversion efficiency of the paired metal-Br-Al junction. Owing to the narrow states in the vicinity of the chemical potential, the nanojunction has large Seebeck coefficients such that it can be considered an efficient thermoelectric power generator. We also consider the nanojunction in a three-terminal geometry, where the current, voltage, power, and efficiency can be efficiently modulated by the gate voltages. Such current-voltage characteristics could be useful in the design of nano-scale e…
We study the thermoelectric transport coefficients of a one-dimensional (1D) electron waveguide connected to one and then two off-channel cavities, in the presence of dephasing phonons. The model system is that of a linear chain described as a 1D lattice. For simplicity we consider single-mode cavities, which may be tuned with external gates. While the presence of only one off-channel cavity yields a nearly symmetric transmission profile, which is canceled around the cavity mode, an additional cavity modifies this profile strongly and results in an asymmetric shape characterized by oscillation…
We theoretically study phonon-drag contribution to the thermoelectric power and hot-electron energy-loss rate in a Rashba spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in the Bloch-Gruneisen (BG) regime. We assume that electrons interact with longitudinal acoustic phonons through deformation potential and with both longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons through piezoelectric potential. Effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction on magnitude and temperature dependence of the phonon-drag thermoelectric power and hot-electron energy-loss rate are discussed. We numerically extra…
Thermal transmission in a molecular transistor with fully spin-polarized electrodes subjected to a temperature gradient is considered. The problem has been solved by using density matrix method in perturbation approach over small tunneling width. It has been found that due to the vibronic effects spintronic molecular transistor is characterized by negative differential thermoconductance. It has been demonstrated that in the dependence of thermopower $S$ on the detuning energy there is an increased number of points of change of the sign and magnitude of $S$ comparing with that of conventional m…
We investigate thermoelectric efficiency of systems with broken time reversal symmetry under a three-terminal transport. Using a model of Aharonov-Bohm interferometer formed with three noninteracting quantum dots, we show that Carnot efficiency can be achieved when the thermopower is a symmetric function of the applied magnetic field. On the other hand, the maximal value of the efficiency at maximum power is obtained for asymmetric thermopower. Indeed, we show that Curzon-Ahlborn limit is exceeded within the linear response regime in our model. Moreover, we investigate thermoelectric efficienc…
We report measurements of the thermopower $S$ and Nernst signal $S_{yx}$ in graphene in a magnetic field $H$. Both quantities show strong quantum oscillations vs. the gate voltage $V_g$. Our measurements for Landau Levels of index $n\ne 0$ are in quantitative agreement with the edge-current model of Girvin and Jonson (GJ). The inferred off-diagonal thermoelectric conductivity $α_{yx}$ comes close to the quantum of Amps per Kelvin. At the Dirac point ($n=0$), however, the width of the peak in $α_{yx}$ is very narrow. We discuss features of the thermoelectric response at the Dirac point includin…
We study the thermoelectric transport through a single-level quantum dot (QD) coupled to two normal metallic leads and side-coupled to Majorana bound state (MBS). The Coulomb interaction in QD is considered. To investigate only the influence of MBS on thermoelectric transport, we focus on the relatively high temperature region ($T\gg T_K$), where Kondo effect does not appear. The electric and thermal conductance and thermopower as a function of gate voltage (i.e. QD level) are completely different whether the coupling between MBSs is zero or not. When the coupling between MBSs is finite, all t…
It is shown that for the hopping regime, the thermopowers in both finite two-terminal and three-terminal systems are governed by the edges of the samples. This is due to the fact that the energy transfer between a transport electron and a conducting terminal is determined by the site most strongly coupled to that terminal. One-dimensional systems with both nearest-neighbor and variable-range transport as well as certain types of two-dimensional systems, are considered. For a given sample, the changes in the thermopowers due to modifying the bulk are quite limited, compared with those of the co…
In an unconventional superconductor, the interplay of scattering off impurities and Andreev processes may lead to different scattering times for electronlike and holelike quasiparticles. Such electron-hole asymmetry appears when the impurity scattering phase shift is intermediate between the Born and unitary limits and leads to an expectation for large thermoelectric effects. Here, we examine the thermoelectric response of a $d$-wave superconductor connected to normal-metal reservoirs under a temperature bias using a fully self-consistent quasiclassical theory. The thermoelectrically induced q…
We consider a single level quantum dot interacting with a phonon mode and weakly coupled to metallic leads which are subjected to a time dependent gate voltage. Electrical conductance, thermopower, and figure of merit are investigated in detail using a Tien-Gordon-type rate equation. In the presence of the microwave field, the electrical conductance exhibits extra peaks whose height is controlled by the magnitude of the microwave field. Furthermore, the oscillation of the thermopower increases in the presence of the time-dependent gate voltage or the electron-phonon interaction. Influence of t…
We report a numerical renormalization-group study of the thermoelectric effect in the single-electron transistor (SET) and side-coupled geometries. As expected, the computed thermal conductance and thermopower curves show signatures of the Kondo effect and of Fano interference. The thermopower curves are also affected by particle-hole asymmetry.
We investigate thermoelectric transport through Andreev interferometers. We show that the ratio of the thermal and the charge conductance exhibits large oscillations with the phase difference $ϕ$ between the two superconducting contacts, and that the Wiedemann-Franz law holds only when $ϕ=π$. A large average thermopower furthermore emerges whenever there is an asymmetry in the dwell times to reach the superconducting contacts. When this is the case, the thermopower is odd in $ϕ$. In contrast, when the average times to reach either superconducting contact are the same, the average thermopower i…
Thermoelectric measurements have the potential to uncover the density of states of low-dimensional materials. Here, we present the anomalous thermoelectric behaviour of mono-layer graphene-nanowire (NW) heterostructures, showing large oscillations as a function of doping concentration. Our devices consist of InAs NW and graphene vertical heterostructures, which are electrically isolated by thin ($\sim$ 10nm) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers. In contrast to conventional thermoelectric measurements, where a heater is placed on one side of a sample, we use the InAs NW (diameter $\sim 50$ nm) …
Motivated by recent proposal by Potter et al. [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031026 (2016)] concerning possible thermoelectric signatures of Dirac composite fermions, we perform a systematic experimental study of thermoelectric transport of an ultrahigh-mobility GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs two dimensional electron system at filling factor v = 1/2. We demonstrate that the thermopower Sxx and Nernst Sxy are symmetric and anti-symmetric with respect to B = 0 T, respectively. The measured properties of thermopower Sxx at v = 1/2 are consistent with previous experimental results. The Nernst signals Sxy of v = 1/2, which hav…
We investigate basic properties of the thermopower (Seebeck coefficient) of phase-coherent conductors under the influence of dephasing and inelastic processes. Transport across the system is caused by a voltage bias or a thermal gradient applied between two terminals. Inelastic scattering is modeled with the aid of an additional probe acting as an ideal potentiometer and thermometer. We find that inelastic scattering reduces the conductor's thermopower and, more unexpectedly, generates a magnetic-field asymmetry in the Seebeck coefficient. The latter effect is shown to be a higher-order effect…
Thermoelectric properties of a C60 molecular transistor are studied using Green function formalism in linear response regime. A tight-binding model is used to investigate the effect of the dimerization and coupling geometry on the electrical conductance, thermopower, and figure of merit. Increase of the connection points between the molecule and electrodes results in decrease of the number of the peaks of the electrical conductance owing to the interference effects. In addition, oscillation of the thermopower is reduced by increase of the connection points. It is also observed that the kind of…
Ultrathin layers of semiconducting molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) offer significant prospects in future electronic and optoelectronic applications. Although an increasing number of experiments bring light into the electronic transport properties of these crystals, their thermoelectric properties are much less known. In particular, thermoelectricity in chemical vapor deposition grown MoS2, which is more practical for wafer-scale applications, still remains unexplored. Here, for the first time, we investigate these properties in grown single layer MoS2. Micro-fabricated heaters and thermometers are…
Helicenes are inherently chiral polyaromatic molecules composed of all-ortho fused benzene rings possessing a spring-like structure. Here, using a combination of density functional theory and tight-binding calculations, it is demonstrated that controlling the length of the helicene molecule by mechanically stretching or compressing the molecular junction can dramatically change the electronic properties of the helicene, leading to a tunable switching behavior of the conductance and thermopower of the junction with on/off ratios of several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, control over the heli…

We investigate the conductance and thermopower of massless Dirac fermions through a quantum dot using a pseudogap Anderson model in the non-crossing approximation. When the Fermi level is at the Dirac point, the conductance has a cusp where the thermopower changes its sign. When the Fermi level is away from the Dirac point, the Kondo temperature illustrates a quantum impurity transition between an asymmetric strong coupling Kondo state and a localized moment state. The conductance shows a peak near this transition and reaches the unitary limit at low temperatures. The magnitude of the thermopo…
We apply noise thermometry to characterize charge and thermoelectric transport in single InAs nanowires (NWs) at a bath temperature of 4.2 K. Shot noise measurements identify elastic diffusive transport in our NWs with negligible electron-phonon interaction. This enables us to set up a measurement of the diffusion thermopower. Unlike in previous approaches, we make use of a primary electronic noise thermometry to calibrate a thermal bias across the NW. In particular, this enables us to apply a contact heating scheme, which is much more efficient in creating the thermal bias as compared to conv…
The thermoelectric response of high mobility single layer epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide substrates as a function of temperature and magnetic field have been investigated. For the temperature dependence of the thermopower, a strong deviation from the Mott relation has been observed even when the carrier density is high, which reflects the importance of the screening effect. In the quantum Hall regime, the amplitude of the thermopower peaks is lower than a quantum value predicted by theories, despite the high mobility of the sample. A systematic reduction of the amplitude with decreasing…
We investigate the time evolution of the thermopower in a vibrating quantum dot suddenly shifted into the Kondo regime via a gate voltage by adopting the time-dependent non-crossing approximation and linear response Onsager relations. Behaviour of the instantaneous thermopower is studied for a range of temperatures both in zero and strong electron-phonon coupling. We argue that inverse of the saturation value of decay time of thermopower to its steady state value might be an alternative tool in determination of the Kondo temperature and the value of the electron-phonon coupling strength.
We present electronic and transport properties of a zigzag nanoribbon made of alpha-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice. Our particular focus is on the effects of the continous evolution of the edge modes ( from flat to dispersive) on the thermoelectric transport properties. Unlike the case of graphene nanoribbon, the zigzag nanoribbon of $α-\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice can host a pair of dispersive (chiral) edge modes at the two valleys for specific width of the ribbon. Moreover, gap opening can also occur at the two valleys depending on the width. The slope of the chiral edge modes and the energy gap strongly…
We investigate thermopower and thermoelectric coefficient of nano-granular materials at large tunneling conductance between the grains, g_{T} >> 1. We show that at intermediate temperatures, T >= g_{T}δ, where δis the mean energy level spacing for a single grain, electron-electron interaction leads to an increase of the thermopower with decreasing grain size. We discuss our results in the light of new types of thermoelectric materials and present the behavior of the figure of merit depending on system parameters.
Weyl semimetals host linear energy dispersions around Weyl nodes, as well as monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space around these points. These features give rise to unique transport signatures in a Weyl semimetal, such as transverse transport without an applied magnetic field, known as anomalous transport. The type-II Weyl semimetal, recently experimentally demonstrated in several materials, is classified by a tilting of the Weyl nodes. This paper provides a theoretical study on thermoelectric transport in time-reversal breaking type-II Weyl semimetals. Our results examine the balance …
We study thermoelectric devices where a single 18-annulene molecule is connected to metallic zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) via highly transparent contacts that allow for injection of evanescent wave functions from ZGNRs into the molecular ring. Their overlap generates a peak in the electronic transmission, while ZGNRs additionally suppress hole-like contributions to the thermopower. Thus optimized thermopower, together with suppression of phonon transport through ZGNR-molecule-ZGNR structure, yield the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT ~ 0.5 at room temperature and 0.5 < ZT < 2.5 below li…
We consider a spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional electron system under the influence of a thermal gradient externally applied to two attached reservoirs. We discuss the generated voltage bias (charge Seebeck effect), spin bias (spin Seebeck effect) and magnetization-dependent thermopower (magneto-Seebeck effect) in the ballistic regime of transport at linear response. We find that the charge thermopower is an oscillating function of both the spin-orbit strength and the quantum well width. We also observe that it is always negative for normal leads. We carefully compare the exact results for th…
