Using the model of Nambu and Jona-Lasinio to provide a microscopic description of both the structure of the nucleon and of the quark to hadron elementary fragmentation functions, we investigate the transverse momentum dependence of the unpolarized quark distributions in the nucleon and of the quark to pion and kaon fragmentation functions. The transverse momentum dependence of the fragmentation functions is determined within a Monte Carlo framework, with the notable result that the average $P_\perp^2$ of the produced kaons is significantly larger than that of the pions. We also find that $<P_\perp^2>$ has a sizable $z$ dependence, in contrast with the naive Gaussian ansatz for the fragmentation functions. Diquark correlations in the nucleon give rise to a non-trivial flavor dependence in the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent quark distribution functions. The $<k_T^2>$ of the quarks in the nucleon are also found to have a sizable $x$ dependence. Finally, these results are used as input to a Monte Carlo event generator for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), which is used to determine the average transverse momentum squared of the produced hadrons measured in SIDIS, namely $<P_T^2>$. Again we find that the average $P_T^2$ of the produced kaons in SIDIS is significantly larger than that of the pions and in each case $\la P_T^2 \ra$ has a sizable $z$ dependence.
We derive gluon fragmentation functions in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model by treating a gluon as a pair of color lines formed by fictitious quark and anti-quark ($q\bar q$). Gluon elementary fragmentation functions are obtained from the quark and anti-quark elementary fragmentation functions for emitting specific mesons in the NJL model under the requirement that the $q\bar q$ pair maintains in the flavor-singlet state after meson emissions. An integral equation, which iterates the gluon elementary fragmentation functions to all orders, is then solved to yield the gluon fragmentation funct…
We derive the fragmentation function (FF), which describes the probability for a charm quark to emit a $D$ meson with a certain momentum fraction, in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The corresponding elementary FF is calculated with the quark-meson coupling determined in the NJL model involving charm quarks. The FF in the infinite momentum frame is constructed through the jet process governed by the elementary FF, and then evolved to the charm scale, at which it is defined. To prepare the FF suitable for an analysis of $D$ meson production at CLEO, we further match the above FF to that in …
We present a thorough analysis of unpolarized Drell-Yan (DY) pair production in pion-nucleus scattering. On the nucleus side, we use nuclear parton distributions along with parametrisations of the nucleon partonic transverse distribution available in the literature. Partonic longitudinal and transverse distributions of the pion are those obtained in a recent calculation in a Nambu-Jona Lasinio (NJL) framework, with Pauli-Villars regularization. The scale of the NJL model is fixed by a comparison between NLO predictions based on NJL evolved pion distributions and rapidity differential DY cross …
We study the transverse momentum spectrum of hadrons in jets. By measuring the transverse momentum with respect to a judiciously chosen axis, we find that this observable is insensitive to (the recoil of) soft radiation. Furthermore, for small transverse momenta we show that the effects of the jet boundary factorize, leading to a new transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation function. In contrast to the usual TMD fragmentation functions, it does not involve rapidity divergences and is universal in the sense that it is independent of the type of process and number of jets. These results…
We present an analysis of unpolarized Drell-Yan pair production in pion-nucleus scattering with a particular focus into the pion dynamics. The study consists in analyzing the effect of the partonic longitudinal and, especially, transverse distributions of the pion in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) framework, with Pauli-Villars regularization. In order to consistently take into account the QCD evolution effects, we have estimated the hadronic scale corresponding to the NJL model's degrees of freedom through a minimization procedure at NLO: The NLO evolved pion distributions have been compared to r…
We have calculated the unpolarized dihadron fragmentation functions (uDiFFs) of pions and kaons using the nonlocal chiral-quark model (NLChQM) and evolved our results to the transferred momentum scale Q$^2$=4$\mathrm{GeV}^2$ by the QCD evolution equations. These uDiFFs have also been computed in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio-jet (NJL-jet) model for the sake of comparison. We find that there is substantial difference between the results of these two models. Furthermore, the DiFFs of $u\to π^{+}π^{-}$ and $g\to π^{+}π^{-}$ at $Q^2=109\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$ in these two models are presented in comparison wi…
In order to describe the hadronization of polarized quarks, we discuss an extension of the quark-jet model to transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions. The description is based on a product ansatz, where each factor in the product represents one of the transverse momentum dependent splitting functions, which can be calculated by using effective quark theories. The resulting integral equations and sum rules are discussed in detail for the case of inclusive pion production. In particular, we demonstrate that the 3-dimensional momentum sum rules are satisfied naturally in this transv…
The back-to-back $J/ψ$ and $π$ associated production at $e^+ e^-$ colliders is proposed to detect the gluon transverse momentum dependent(TMD) fragmentation functions. TMD factorization is assumed for this process. With spinless pion, unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon TMD fragmentation functions can be defined. It is found at parton level the hadronic tensor can be described by four structure functions. As a result, there are three independent angular distributions, of which a $\cos{2ϕ}$ azimuthal asymmetry is sensitive to the linearly polarized gluon fragmentation function.
Within the collinear twist-3 framework, we study the single-spin asymmetry (SSA) in collisions between unpolarized protons and transversely polarized protons with focus on the fragmentation term. The fragmentation mechanism must be analyzed in detail in order to unambiguously determine the impact of various contributions to SSAs in hadron production. Such a distinction may also settle the "sign mismatch" between the transverse SSA in proton-proton collisions and the Sivers effect in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. We calculate terms involving quark-quark and quark-gluon-quark correla…
The Wigner Function of Produced Particles in String Fragmentation
Information on the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation functions and their transverse momentum dependence is mainly based on fitting single spin asymmetry data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). Independent information, respectively on the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation, can be obtained from Drell-Yan and $e^+e^-$ annihilation processes. In the SIDIS case, the transverse momentum of the final observed hadron, which is the quantity measured, is generated both by the average transverse momentum in the distribution and in the fragmentation func…
We compute the inclusive unpolarized dihadron production cross section in the far from back-to-back region of $e^+ e^-$ annihilation in leading order pQCD using existing fragmentation function fits and standard collinear factorization, focusing on the large transverse momentum region where transverse momentum is comparable to the hard scale (the center-of-mass energy). We compare with standard transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation function-based predictions intended for the small transverse momentum region with the aim of testing the expectation that the two types of calculation ro…
A new formalism for the factorization of the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, differential in $z_h$, $P_T$ and thrust, is applied to the phenomenological analysis of data recently measured by the BELLE Collaboration. Within this scheme the $e^+e^- \to hX$ cross section can be recast in the convolution of a perturbatively calculable coefficient and a universal transverse momentum dependent fragmentation function. While performing a next-to-leading order calculation of the perturbative part of the process to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, we examine an…
In this work we apply effective field theory (EFT) to observables in quarkonium production and decay that are sensitive to soft gluon radiation, in particular measurements that are sensitive to small transverse momentum. Within the EFT framework we study $χ_Q$ decay to light quarks followed by the fragmentation of those quarks to light hadrons. We derive a factorization theorem that involves transverse momentum distribution (TMD) fragmentation functions and new quarkonium TMD shape functions. We derive renormalization group equations, both in rapidity and virtuality, which are used to evolve t…
We calculate the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), evaluating separately TMD soft factor and TMD collinear correlator. For the first time the cancellation of spurious rapidity divergences in a properly defined individual TMD beyond the first non-trivial order is shown. This represents a strong check of the given TMD definition. We extract the matching coefficient necessary to perform the transverse momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. The universal character of the soft func…
We demonstrate that spontaneous transverse polarization of Lambda baryon ($Λ$) production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation can be described using the transverse momentum dependent polarizing fragmentation functions (TMD PFFs). Using a simple Gaussian model, we perform an extraction of the TMD PFFs by fitting the BELLE collaboration's recent measurement of the $Λ$ transverse polarization in back-to-back $Λ+h$ production in $e^+ e^-$ collisions, $e^{-} + e^{+} \rightarrow Λ^{\uparrow}+h+X$. We find that this simple model accurately describes the experimental data for $Λ$ production associated with pions…
