Atom-number states are a valuable resource for ultracold chemistry, atom interferometry and quantum information processing. Recent experiments have achieved their deterministic preparation in trapped few-fermion systems. We analyze the tunneling decay of these states, both in terms of the survival probability, and the non-escape probability, which can be extracted from measurements of the full counting statistics. At short times, the survival probability exhibits deviations from the exponential law. The decay is governed by the multi-particle Zeno time which exhibits a signature of quantum statistics and contact interactions. The subsequent exponential regime governs most of the dynamics, and we provide accurate analytical expressions for the associated decay rates. Both dynamical regimes are illustrated in a realistic model. Finally, a global picture of multi-particle quantum decay is presented.
We study the tunneling dynamics of bosonic and fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases from a hard wall trap, in which one of the walls is substituted by a delta potential. Using the Fermi-Bose map, the decay of the probability to remain in the trap is studied as a function of both the number of particles and the intensity of the end-cap delta laser. The fermionic gas is shown to be a good candidate to study deviations of the non-exponential decay of the single-particle type, whereas for the bosonic case a novel regime of non-exponential decay appears due to the contributions of different resonances o…
For over twenty years, ultra-cold atomic systems have formed an almost perfect arena for simulating different quantum many-body phenomena and exposing their non-obvious and very often counterintuitive features. Thanks to extremely precise controllability of different parameters they are able to capture different quantum properties which were previously recognized only as theoretical curiosities. Here, we go over the current experimental progress in exploring the curious one-dimensional quantum world of fermions from the perspective of three subjectively selected trends being currently under vi…
Coupling a quantum particle to a fermionic bath suppresses the particle's amplitude to tunnel, even at zero temperature. While this effect can generally be neglected for gapped baths -- a key feature for superconducting qubits -- , it is possible for the bath to be gapped near the potential minima between which the particle tunnels, but different minima to correspond to different bath topologies. This enforces the bath to undergo gap closing along the tunneling path. In this work, we investigate quantum tunneling in the presence of such a topology-changing fermionic bath. We develop a field th…
We study the impact of coherently generated lattice photons on an atomic Mott insulator subjected to a uniform force. Analogous to an array of tunnel-coupled and biased quantum dots, we observe sharp, interaction-shifted photon-assisted tunneling resonances corresponding to tunneling one and two lattice sites either with or against the force, and resolve multiorbital shifts of these resonances. By driving a Landau-Zener sweep across such a resonance, we realize a quantum phase transition between a paramagnet and an antiferromagnet, and observe quench dynamics when the system is tuned to the cr…
The collective dynamics of a dipolar fermionic quantum gas confined in a one-dimensional double-well superlattice is explored. The fermionic gas resides in a paramagnetic-like ground state in the weak interaction regime, upon which a new type of collective dynamics is found when applying a local perturbation. This dynamics is composed of the local tunneling of fermions in separate supercells, and is a pure quantum effect, with no classical counterpart. Due to the presence of the dipolar interactions the local tunneling transports through the entire superlattice, giving rise to a collective dyn…
We study the steady state entanglement and correlations of an open system comprised of two coupled fermions in the equilibrium or nonequilibrium environments and distill the nonequilibrium contribution to the quantum correlations. We show that in the equilibrium condition, the steady-state quantum correlations exhibit non-monotonic behavior, while in the nonequilibrium case, the monotonicity is determined by many parameters. The entanglement vanishes abruptly upon the increase of the temperature (bias) and chemical potential bias, it witnesses a critical chemical potential above which the conc…
Quantum fermionic computations on occupation numbers proposed in quant-ph/0003137 are studied. It is shown that a control over external field and tunneling would suffice to fulfill all quantum computations without valuable slowdown in the framework of such model when an interaction of diagonal type is fixed and permanent. Substantiation is given through a reduction of some subset of this model to the conventional language of quantum computing and application of the construction from quant-ph/0202030.
We theoretically study the dynamics of $n$-level spin-orbit coupled alkaline-earth fermionic atoms with SU($n$) symmetric interactions. We consider three dimensional lattices with tunneling along one dimension, and the internal levels treated as a synthetic dimension, realizing an $n$-leg flux ladder. Laser driving is used to couple the internal levels and to induce an effective magnetic flux through the ladder. We focus on the dense and strongly interacting regime, where in the absence of flux the system behaves as a Mott insulator with suppressed motional dynamics. At integer and fractional …

We calculate experimentally relevant properties of trapped fermionic alkaline earth atoms in an optical lattice, modeled by the SU(N) Hubbard model. Our calculation is accurate when the temperature is much larger than the tunneling rate, similar to current regimes in ultracold atom experiments. In addition to exploring the Mott insulator-metal crossover, we calculate final temperatures achieved by the standard experimental protocol of adiabatically ramping from a non-interacting gas, as a function of initial gas temperature and final state lattice parameters. Of particular experimental interes…
We theoretically explore the tunneling dynamics for the tight-binding (TB) model of a single spin-orbit-coupled atom trapped in an optical lattice subjected to lattice shaking and to time-periodic Zeeman field. By means of analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit (SO) coupling adds some new results to the tunneling dynamics in both multiphoton resonance and far-off-resonance parameter regimes. When the driving frequency is resonant with the static Zeeman field (multi-photon resonances), we obtain an unexpected new dynamical localization (DL) phenomenon where the sin…
We investigate the properties of the Lieb lattice, i.e a face-centered square lattice, subjected to external gauge fields. We show that an Abelian gauge field leads to a peculiar quantum Hall effect, which is a consequence of the single Dirac cone and the flat band characterizing the energy spectrum. Then we explore the effects of an intrinsic spin-orbit term - a non-Abelian gauge field - and demonstrate the occurrence of the quantum spin Hall effect in this model. Besides, we obtain the relativistic Hamiltonian describing the Lieb lattice at low energy and derive the Landau levels in the pres…
We consider the properties of stationary states and the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a double-well (DW) potential with pair tunneling by using a full quantum-mechanical treatment. Furthermore, we study the quantum quench dynamics of the DW system subjected to a sudden change of the Peierls phase. It is shown that strong pair tunneling evidently influences the energy spectrum structure of the stationary states. For relatively weak repulsive interatomic interactions, the dynamics of the DW system with a maximal initial population difference evolves from Josephson oscillations …
We study the quantum dynamics of conversion of composite bosons into fermionic fragment species with increasing densities of bound fermion pairs using the open quantum system approach. The Hilbert space of $N$-state-function is decomposed into a composite boson subspace and an orthogonal fragment subspace of quasi-free fermions that enlarges as the composite boson constituents deviate from ideal boson commutation relations. The tunneling dynamics of coupled composite boson states in confined systems is examined, and the appearance of exceptional points under experimentally testable conditions …
By quickly modifying the shape of the effective potential of a double SQUID flux qubit from a single-well to a double-well condition, we experimentally observe an anomalous behavior, namely an alternance of resonance peaks, in the probability to find the qubit in a given flux state. The occurrence of Landau-Zener transitions as well as resonant tunneling between degenerate levels in the two wells may be invoked to partially justify the experimental results. A quantum simulation of the time evolution of the system indeed suggests that the observed anomalous behavior can be imputable to quantum …
We investigate Klein tunneling through finite potential barriers with space-time resolved solutions to relativistic quantum field equations. We find that no particle actually tunnels through a finite supercritical barrier, even in the case of resonant tunneling. The transmission is instead mediated by modulations in pair production rates, at each edge of the barrier, caused by the incoming electron. We further examine the effect of the barrier's width on the numbers of produced pairs in the fermionic case (characterized by saturation) and in the bosonic case (characterized by exponential super…
Strongly interacting fermionic atoms on optical lattices are studied through a Hubbard-like model Hamiltonian, in which tunneling rates of atoms and molecules between neighboring sites are assumed to be different. In the limit of large onsite repulsion U, the model is shown to reproduce the t-J Hamiltonian, in which the J coefficient of the Heisenberg term depends on the particle-assisted tunneling rate g: explicitly, $J=4 g^2/U$. At half-filling, g drives a crossover from a Brinkman-Rice paramagnetic insulator of fully localized atoms (g=0) to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator of the stand…
While exponential decay is ubiquitous in Nature, deviations at both short and long times are dictated by quantum mechanics. Non-exponential decay is known to arise due to the possibility of reconstructing the initial state from the decaying products. We discuss the quantum decay dynamics by tunneling of a many-particle system, characterizing the long-time non-exponential behavior of the non-escape and survival probabilities. The effects of contact interactions and quantum statistics are described. It is found that whereas for non-interacting bosons the long-time decay follows a power-law with …
Topological materials have potential applications for quantum technologies. Non-interacting topological materials, such as e.g., topological insulators and superconductors, are classified by means of fundamental symmetry classes. It is instead only partially understood how interactions affect topological properties. Here, we discuss a model where topology emerges from the quantum interference between single-particle dynamics and global interactions. The system is composed by soft-core bosons that interact via global correlated hopping in a one-dimensional lattice. The onset of quantum interfer…
We consider a bipartite quantum conductor and discuss the joint probability distribution of particle number in a subsystem and the self-information associated with the reduced density matrix of the subsystem. By extending the multi-contour Keldysh Green function technique, we calculate the Rényi entropy of a positive integer order $M$ subjected to the particle number constraint, from which we derive the joint probability distribution. For energy-independent transmission, we derive the time dependence of the accessible entanglement entropy, or the conditional entropy. We analyze the joint proba…
The coherent-state path-integral representation for the propagator of fermionic systems subjected to first-class constraints is constructed. As in the bosonic case the importance of path-integral measures for Lagrange multipliers is emphasized. One example is discussed in some detail.
We have studied the temporal evolution of a quantum system subjected to strong dissipation at ultra-low temperatures where the system-bath interaction represents the leading energy scale. In this regime, theory predicts the time evolution of the system to follow a generalization of the classical Smoluchowski description, the quantum Smoluchowski equation, thus, exhibiting quantum Brownian motion characteristics. For this purpose, we have investigated the phase dynamics of a superconducting tunnel junction in the presence of high damping. We performed current-biased measurements on the small-ca…
