We study the charged chiral matter spectrum of four-dimensional F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds by using the dual M-theory description. A chiral spectrum can be induced by M-theory four-form flux on the fully resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold. In M-theory this flux yields three-dimensional Chern-Simons couplings in the Coulomb branch of the gauge theory. In the F-theory compactification on an additional circle these couplings are only generated by one-loop corrections with charged fermions running in the loop. This identification allows us to infer the net number of chiral matter fields of the four-dimensional effective theory. The chirality formulas can be evaluated by using the intersection numbers and the cones of effective curves of the resolved fourfolds. We argue that a study of the effective curves also allows to follow the resolution process at each co-dimension. To write simple chirality formulas we suggest to use the effective curves involved in the resolution process to determine the matter surfaces and to connect with the group theory at co-dimension two in the base. We exemplify our methods on examples with SU(5) and SU(5)xU(1) gauge group.
Recently it was found that the density matrix for a certain orthosymplectic Chern-Simons theory matches with that for the ABJM theory with the odd chiral projection. We prove this fact for a general case with the inclusion of fractional branes. We also identify the first few diagonal Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for the grand potential constructed from the chirally projected density matrix.
In this paper we shall consider an axionic Chern-Simons corrected $f(R)$ gravity theoretical framework, and we shall study the chirality of the generated primordial gravitational waves. Particularly, we shall consider two main axion models, the canonical misalignment axion model and the kinetic axion model, both of which provide an interesting particle phenomenology, in the presence of $R^2$ terms in the inflationary Lagrangian. The axion does not affect significantly the background evolution during the inflationary era, which is solely controlled by $R^2$ gravity. However, the due to the pres…
A single-sided boundary is introduced in the three-dimensional Chern-Simons model. It is shown that only one boundary condition for the gauge fields is possible, which plays the twofold role of chirality condition and bosonization rule for the two-dimensional Weyl fermion describing the degrees of freedom of the edge states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. It is derived the symmetry on the boundary which determines the effective two dimensional action, whose equation of motion coincides with the continuity equation of the Tomonaga-Luttinger theory. The role of Lorentz symmetry and of dis…
Based on recent discussions on the so-called unconventional supersymmetry, we analyze a class of solutions of a 5D Chern-Simons AdS-$\mathcal{N}$-SUGRA formulation without gravitino fields. With a Randall-Sundrum-type ansatz, we exploit the properties of Chern-Simons theories to find solutions to the fermionic field equations in a particular dimensional reduction context. We show that this specific dimensional reduction yields a non-trivial equation of motion for the fermionic field. We actually get a non-linear equation of motion for the fermionic fields, typical of models where torsion is pr…
To study the effect of parity-violation on the rate of complexity growth, by using "Complexity=Action" conjecture, we find the complexity growth rates in different solutions of the chiral theory of Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) and parity-preserving theory of New Massive Gravity (NMG). Using the results, one can see that decreasing the parameter $μ$, which increases the effect of Chern-Simons term and increases chirality, would increase the rate of growth of complexity. Also one can observe a stronger correlation between complexity growth and temperature rather than complexity growth and…
The properties of the multisoliton solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Skyrme model are investigated numerically. Coupling to the Chern-Simons term allows for existence of the electrically charge solitons which may also carry magnetic fluxes. Two particular choices of the potential term is considered: (i) the weakly bounded potential and (ii) the double vacuum potential. In the absence of the gauge interaction in the former case the individual constituents of the multisoliton configuration are well separated, while in the latter case the rotational invariance of the configu…
We consider $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with cubic and quadratic soft SUSY breaking potential, such that the global $SU(4)_R$ is broken to $SU(3)$ or further. As shown recently, this set-up supports a rich set of non-trivial vacua with the geometry of self-intersecting $SU(3)$ branes in 6 extra dimensions. The zero modes on these branes can be interpreted as 3 generations of bosonic and chiral fermionic strings connecting the branes at their intersections. Here, we uncover a large class of exact solutions consisting of branes connected by Higgs condensates, leading to Yukawa coupl…
In this work we investigate the inflationary era in the presence of a canonical scalar field and Chern-Simons parity violating corrections. It was also assumed that a non minimal coupling between curvature and the scalar field is present. For the shake of completeness, the slow-roll and the constant-roll scenarios were examined separately. In the context of this scalar-tensor theory, inflation can be viable for both scenarios since the observational indices take acceptable values according to the most recent Planck data. Furthermore, the involvement of the Chern-Simons term has no effect on th…
Mixed dimensional theories have been used to describe condensed matter systems where fermions are constrained to a plane while the gauge fields they interact with remain four-dimensional. Here we investigate dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in the framework of a mixed-dimensional theory that has been successful in describing graphene and other planar Dirac materials and has been dubbed as Pseudo or Reduced Quantum Electrodynamics. We explore the interplay between the gauge and fermion sector when a Chern-Simons term is considered and, by exploring the tensor structure of the fermion self …
We study vacua of N = 4 half-maximal gauged supergravity in five dimensions and determine crucial properties of the effective theory around the vacuum. The main focus is on configurations with exactly two broken supersymmetries, since they frequently appear in consistent truncations of string theory and supergravity. Evaluating one-loop corrections to the Chern-Simons terms we find necessary conditions to ensure that a consistent truncation also gives rise to a proper effective action of an underlying more fundamental theory. To obtain concrete examples, we determine the N=4 action of M-theory…
In this work, conserved charges and fluxes at the future null infinity are determined in the asymptotically flat spacetime for Chern-Simons modified gravity. The flux-balance laws are used to constrain the memory effects. For tensor memories, the Penrose's conformal completion method is used to analyze the asymptotic structures and asymptotic symmetries, and then, conserved charges for the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra are constructed with the Wald-Zoupas formalism. These charges take very similar forms to those in Brans-Dicke theory. For the scalar memory, Chern-Simons modified gravity is rewri…
We find the entire form of the amplitude of two fermion strings (with different chirality), a massless scalar field and one closed string Ramond-Ramond (RR) in IIA superstring theory which is different from its IIB one. We make use of a very particular gauge fixing and explore several new couplings in IIA. All infinite $u$- channel scalar poles and $t,s$- channel fermion poles are also constructed. We find new form of higher derivative corrections to two fermion two scalar couplings and show that the first simple $(s+t+u)-$ channel scalar pole for $p+2=n$ case can be obtained by having new hig…

We study simultaneous evolution of electron, neutrino and quark asymmetries, and large scale hypermagnetic fields in the symmetric phase of the electroweak plasma in the temperature range $100$GeV$\leq T\leq 10$TeV, taking into account the chirality flip processes via inverse Higgs decays and fermion number violation due to Abelian anomalies. We present a derivation of the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term for the hypercharge gauge field, showing that the left-handed and right-handed components of each fermion species contribute with opposite sign. This is in contrast to the results present…
Considering high-energy modifications of Einstein gravity during inflation is an interesting issue. We can constrain the strength of the new gravitational terms through observations of inflationary imprints in the actual universe. In this paper we analyze the effects on slow-roll models due to a Chern-Simons term coupled to the inflaton field through a generic coupling function $f(ϕ)$. A well known result is the polarization of primordial gravitational waves (PGW) into left and right eigenstates, as a consequence of parity breaking. In such a scenario the modifications to the power spectrum of…
Testing general relativity in the non-linear, dynamical, strong-field regime of gravity is one of the major goals of gravitational wave astrophysics. Performing precision tests of general relativity (GR) requires numerical inspiral, merger, and ringdown waveforms for binary black hole (BBH) systems in theories beyond GR. Currently, GR and scalar-tensor gravity are the only theories amenable to numerical simulations. In this article, we present a well-posed perturbation scheme for numerically integrating beyond-GR theories that have a continuous limit to GR. We demonstrate this scheme by simula…
In order to gain deeper insight into the physics of the novel rotating solution of nonideal transverse magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), presented in one of our recent works, we replace the previously considered Maxwell theory with the ${\cal{CP}}$ violating Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) theory. In this way, dissipationless chiral magnetic (CM) and anomalous Hall (AH) currents appear in the MCS equation of motion, that, together with equations of relativistic hydrodynamics, builds the set of constitutive equations of the nonideal transverse Chern-Simons magnetohydrodynamics (CSMHD). We are, in particul…
We discuss the non-conservation of fermion number (or chirality breaking, depending on the fermionic charge assignment) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. We study different mechanisms of fermionic charge disappearance in the high temperature plasma, using both analytical estimates and real-time classical lattice numerical simulations. We investigate the random walk of the Chern-Simons number $Q \propto \int d^4x F_{μν}{\tilde F}^{μν}$, and show that it has a diffusive behaviour in the presence of an external magnetic field $B$. This indicates that the mechanism for fermionic num…
We provide a general formula for the partition function of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories placed on $S^2 \times S^1$ with a topological twist along $S^2$, which can be interpreted as an index for chiral states of the theories immersed in background magnetic fields. The result is expressed as a sum over magnetic fluxes of the residues of a meromorphic form which is a function of the scalar zero-modes. The partition function depends on a collection of background magnetic fluxes and fugacities for the global symmetries. We illustrate our formula in many examples of 3d Yang-Mills…
We calculate the electric conductivity $σ$ in deconfined QCD matter using a holographic QCD model, i.e., the Sakai-Sugimoto Model with varying magnetic field $B$ and chiral anomaly strength. After confirming that our estimated $σ$ for $B=0$ is consistent with the lattice-QCD results, we study the case with $B\neq 0$ in which the coefficient $α$ in the Chern-Simons term controls the chiral anomaly strength. Our results imply that the transverse conductivity, $σ_\perp$, is suppressed to be $\lesssim 70\%$ at $B\sim 1\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$ as compared to the $B=0$ case when the temperature is fixed as…
We study fermion number non-conservation (or chirality breaking) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. We consider the presence of a chemical potential $μ$ for the fermionic charge, and monitor its evolution with real-time classical lattice simulations. This method accounts for short-scale fluctuations not included in the usual effective magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) treatment. We observe a self-similar decay of the chemical potential, accompanied by an inverse cascade process in the gauge field that leads to a production of long-range helical magnetic fields. We also study the chiral…
