The T-odd correlation coefficient D in nuclear beta decay probes CP violation in many theories beyond the Standard Model. We provide an analysis for how large D can be in light of constraints from electric dipole moment (EDM) searches. We argue that the neutron EDM d_n currently provides the strongest constraint on D, which is 10 - 10^3 times stronger than current direct limits on D (depending on the model). In particular, contributions to D in leptoquark models (previously regarded as "EDM safe") are more constrained than previously thought. Bounds on D can be weakened only by fine-tuned cancellations or if theoretical uncertainties are larger than estimated in d_n. We also study implications for D from mercury and deuteron EDMs.
Deviations from Lorentz and CPT invariance in the neutrino sector and their observable effects in double beta decay are studied. For two-neutrino double beta decay, a spectral distortion and its properties are characterized for different isotopes. Majorana couplings for Lorentz violation are studied and shown to trigger neutrinoless double beta decay even for negligible Majorana mass. Existing data are used to obtain first limits of $5 \times 10^{-9}$ for 18 individual coefficients and attainable sensitivities in current and future experiments are presented.
We present a necessary condition on the solar oscillation amplitude for CP violation to be detectable through neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. It depends only on the fractional uncertainty in the ν_e-ν_e element of the neutrino mass matrix. We demonstrate that even under very optimistic assumptions about the sensitivity of future experiments to the absolute neutrino mass scale, and on the precision with which nuclear matrix elements that contribute to 0νββdecay are calculable, it will be impossible to detect neutrino CP violation arising from Majorana phases.
Forbidden (slow) beta decays offer new opportunities to test the invariance of the weak interaction under Lorentz transformations. Within a general effective field theory framework we analyze and reinterpret the only two relevant experiments, performed in the 1970s, dedicated to search for a preferred direction in space in first- and second-forbidden beta decays. We show that the results of these experiments put strong and unique limits on Lorentz violation, and in particular on the presence of several interactions in the modern Lorentz-violating Standard Model extension. We discuss prospects …
We consider the possibility of Lorentz-invariance violation in weak-decay processes. We present a general approach that entails modifying the W-boson propagator by adding a Lorentz-violating tensor to it. We describe the effects of Lorentz violation on nuclear beta decay in this scenario. In particular we show the expression for a first-forbidden transition with a spin change of two. Using data from an old experiment on the rotational invariance of yttrium-90, we derive several bounds on the Lorentz-violating parameters of the order of 10^(-6)-10^(-8).
We explore the possibility that the weak interaction violates Lorentz, and in particular rotational, invariance in neutron and allowed nuclear beta decay. A broad class of Lorentz-violating effects is considered, in which the standard propagator of the W-boson acquires an additional Lorentz-violating tensor. The general decay rate for allowed beta decay that incorporates such a modified propagator is derived. The resulting Lorentz-violating signals are discussed for the different types of beta-decay transitions, Fermi, Gamow-Teller, and mixed. We study the implications of our formalism for ded…
Starting from the phenomenologically successful color dipole representation of the diffractive structure function, we identify the dominant contribution to the diffractive cross section at small beta. The beta dependence is calculated taking advantage of the Regge factorization properties of the hard mechanism which drives the dependence on the diffractive mass. We impose the unitarity constraints on the $x_\Pom$-dependence and comment on the screening corrections to $F_{2p}$.
We have examined Lorentz invariance and equivalence principle violations in the neutrino sector as manifested in neutrinoless double beta decay. We conclude that this rare decay cannot provide a useful view of these exotic processes.
The electric dipole moment (EDM) is an excellent probe of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. The EDM of light nuclei is particularly interesting due to the high sensitivity to the hadron level CP violation. In this proceedings contribution, we investigate the mechanism of the generation of the EDM for several light nuclei and the prospect for the discovery of new physics.
We argue three-flavour neutrino mixing. We consider the neutrinos as Majorana particles and see how the neutrinoless double beta decay constrains the neutrino mixing angles. Our formulation is widely valid and is applied to the neutrino oscillation experiment.
Neutrinoless double beta decay data together with information on the absolute neutrino masses obtained from the future KATRIN experiment and/or astrophysical measurements give a chance to find CP violation in the lepton sector with Majorana neutrinos. We derive and discuss necessary conditions which make discovery of such CP violation possible for the future neutrino oscillation and mass measurements data.
I review briefly the notion of minimal flavor violation and its application to supersymmetry, with a special emphasis on a class of operators, so-called Higgs penguins, which can generate new and interesting flavor signals at large tan(beta).
In some quantum theories of gravity, deviations from the laws of relativity could be comparatively large while escaping detection to date. In the neutrino sector, precision experiments with beta decay yield new and improved constraints on these countershaded relativity violations. Existing data are used to extract bounds of $3 \times 10^{-8}$ GeV on the magnitudes of two of the four possible coefficients, and estimates are provided of future attainable sensitivities in a variety of experiments.
We calculate the electric dipole form factor of the nucleon that arises as a low-energy manifestation of time-reversal violation in quark-gluon interactions of effective dimension 6: the quark electric and chromoelectric dipole moments, and the gluon chromoelectric dipole moment. We use the framework of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory to one loop.
Taking account of possible CP violation, we discuss about the constraints on the lepton mixing angles from the neutrinoless double beta decay and from the neutrino oscillation for the three flavour Majorana neutrinos. From the CHORUS oscillation experiment, combined with the data of neutrinoless double beta decay, we show that the large angle solution of (θ_{23}) is improbable if the neutrino mass (m_3) of the third generation is a candidate of hot dark matters.
We show that the proposed measurements of the electric dipole moments of light nuclei in storage rings would put strong constraints on models of flavor-diagonal CP violation. Our analysis is exemplified by a comparison of the Standard Model including the QCD theta term, the minimal left-right symmetric model, a specific version of the so-called aligned two-Higgs doublet model, and briefly the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. By using effective field theory techniques we demonstrate to what extend measurements of the electric dipole moments of the nucleons, the deuteron, …
Determinations of vuds with super-allowed Fermi beta-decay in nuclei and of the weak charge of the cesium in atomic parity-violation deviate from the Standard Model predicitions by 2 sigma or more. In both cases, the Standard Model over-predicts the magnitudes of the relevant observables. I discuss the implications of these results for R-parity violating (RPV) extensions of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. I also explore the possible consequences for RPV supersymmetry of prospective future low-energy electroweak measurements.
We point out that extensions of the Standard Model with low scale (~TeV) lepton number violation (LNV) generally lead to a pattern of lepton flavor violation (LFV) experimentally distinguishable from the one implied by models with GUT scale LNV. As a consequence, muon LFV processes provide a powerful diagnostic tool to determine whether or not the effective neutrino mass can be deduced from the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay. We discuss the role of μ-> e γand μ-> e conversion in nuclei, which will be studied with high sensitivity in forthcoming experiments.
We examine lepton flavor violating couplings of the neutrinos to W boson in medium energy setup of a beta-beam experiment. We show that muon production via quasielastic scattering and deep inelastic scattering processes nu_e n-> mu p and nu_e N-> mu X are very sensitive to W-mu-nu_e couplings. We perform a model independent analysis and obtain 95% confidence level bounds on these couplings.
Leptogenesis in left-right symmetric theories is studied. The usual see-saw mechanism is modified by the presence of a left-handed Higgs triplet. A simple connection between the properties of the light left-handed and heavy right-handed neutrinos is found. Predictions of this scenario for neutrinoless double beta decay and terrestrial CP violation in long-baseline experiments are given. These observables can in principle distinguish different realizations of the model.
We analyze the sensitivity of next-generation tonne-scale neutrinoless double $β$-decay ($0νββ$) experiments and searches for same-sign di-electrons plus jets at the Large Hadron Collider to TeV scale lepton number violating interactions. Taking into account previously unaccounted for physics and detector backgrounds at the LHC, renormalization group evolution, and long-range contributions to $0νββ$ nuclear matrix elements, we find that the reach of tonne-scale $0νββ$ generally exceeds that of the LHC. However, for a range of heavy particle masses near the TeV scale, the high luminosity LHC an…
We illustrate the graphical method that gives the constraints on the parameters appearing in the neutrino oscillation experiments and the neutrinoless double beta decay. This method is applicable in three and four generations. Though this method is valid for more general case, we examine explicitly the cases in which the CP violating factors take $\pm 1$ or $\pm i$ in the neutrinoless double beta decay for illustrative clearance. We also discuss some mass matrix models which lead to the above CP violating factors.
We calculate the fermionic corrections to the photon-energy spectrum of Bbar -> X_sgamma which arise from the self-interference of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 at next-to-next-to-leading order by applying naive non-abelianization. The resulting O(beta_0 alpha_s^2) correction to the Bbar -> X_sgamma branching ratio amounts to a relative shift of +0.12% (+0.27%) for a photon-energy cut of 1.6 GeV (1.0 GeV). We also comment on the potential size of resummation and non-perturbative effects related to Q_8.
We consider the chargino contribution to the CP violation in B \to ϕK_S decay in the minimal supersymmetric standard model at large \tanβ. It is shown that the Wilson coefficient C_{8g} of the chromomagnetic penguin operator can be significantly enhanced by the chargino-mediated diagrams while satisfying other direct/indirect experimental constraints. The enhanced C_{8g} allows large deviation in the CP asymmetry from the standard model prediction.
We prove a low-energy theorem valid for any model of weak scale softly broken supersymmetry. It claims that the neutrino Majorana mass, the B-L violating mass of the sneutrino and the neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude are intimately related to each other such that if one of them is non-zero the other two are also non-zero and, vice versa, if one of them vanishes the other two vanish as well. The theorem is a consequence of the underlying supersymmetry and independent of the mechanisms of neutrinoless double beta decay and (s-)neutrino mass generation.
We review the current status of the study of parity and time invariance violation in atoms, nuclei and molecules. We focus on parity non-conservation in cesium and three of the most promising areas of research: (i) parity non-conservation in a chain of isotopes, (ii) search for nuclear anapole moments, and (iii) search for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of atoms and molecules, which in turn are caused by either an electron EDM or nuclear $T,P$-odd moments such as a nuclear EDM or nuclear Schiff moment.
We consider a Lorentz non-invariant dispersion relation for the neutrino, which would produce unexpected effects with neutrinos of few eV, exactly where the tritium beta-decay anomaly is found. We use this anomaly to put bounds on the violation of Lorentz invariance. We discuss other consequences of this non-invariant dispersion relation in neutrino experiments and high-energy cosmic-ray physics.
We consider recently observed neutrinoless double beta decay in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with R-parity violating couplings lambda^{'}. We observe that most of the current experimental bounds on the R-parity violating couplings do not exclude the possibility that the neutrinoless double beta decay is caused by R-parity violation. But if we consider K-bar{K} oscillation, we observe that we have to make the R-parity violating couplings generation-dependent to accomodate with the observed neutrinoless double beta decay. And furthermore, we need some mechanism to can…
We point out that lepton number violation is possible even if neutrinos are Dirac particles. We illustrate this by constructing a simple model that allows for lepton number violation by four units only. As a consequence, neutrinoless double beta decay is forbidden, but neutrinoless quadruple beta decay is possible: $(A,Z) \to (A,Z+4) + 4 e^-$. We identify three candidate isotopes for this decay, the most promising one being Nd-150 due to its high $Q_{0ν4β}$-value of 2 MeV. Analogous processes, such as neutrinoless quadruple electron capture, are also possible. The expected lifetimes are extrem…
We point out two simple but instructive possibilities to construct the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, from which the nearly bi-maximal neutrino mixing with large T violation can naturally emerge. The two lepton mixing scenarios are compatible very well with current experimental data on solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, and one of them may lead to an observable T-violating asymmetry between ν_μ--> ν_e and ν_e --> ν_μtransitions in the long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Their implications on the neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed.
This proceedings contribution reports the first experimental search for Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals specifically studying the effect of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) oscillation-free momentum-independent neutrino coupling operator in the double beta decay process. The search has been performed using an exposure of 100 kg yr of $^{136}$Xe with the EXO-200 detector. No significant evidence of the spectral modification due to isotropic Lorentz violation was found. A two-sided limit of $-2.65 \times 10^{-5}$ GeV $<$ $\mathring{a}_{\mathrm{of}}^{(3)}$ $< 7.60 \times 10^{-6}$ GeV (90% C.…
A triple-product correlation in the radiative β-decay rate of neutrons or of nuclei, characterized by the kinematic variable ξ\equiv (\vec{l}_ν\times\vec{l}_e)\cdot\vec{k}, where, e.g., n(p) \to p(p') + e^-(l_e) + \barν_e(l_ν) + γ(k), can be generated by the pseudo-Chern-Simons term found by Harvey, Hill, and Hill as a consequence of the baryon vector current anomaly and SU(2)_{L} x U(1)_Y gauge invariance at low energies. The correlation probes the imaginary part of its coupling constant, so that its observation at anticipated levels of sensitivity would reflect the presence of sources of CP …
We investigate under which circumstances one can show the existence of leptonic CP violation with the help of a positive or negative signal in neutrinoless double beta decay. The possibilities of cancellations are investigated for special mass hierarchies and the different solar solutions. The possibility that the mixing angle connected with the solar neutrino problem is smaller or larger than pi/4 is taken into account. The non-maximality of that angle in case of the LMA solution allows to make several useful statements. The four different CP conserving possibilities are analyzed. It is imple…
A recently proposed Non-Standard Model solution to the problem of low semileptonic branching ratio B_{SL} which suggests a large branching ratio for the decay $b \to sg$ is critically examined. It is shown that the effects of the Enhanced Chromomagnetic Dipole Operator might lead to significant violations of isospin symmetry in rare radiative decays of B-mesons.
We study the explicit CP violation of the Higgs sector in the next--to--minimal supersymmetric model with a gauge singlet Higgs field. Our numerical predictions show that electric dipole moment of electron lies around the present experimental upper limits. The mass of the lightest Higgs boson is quite sensitive to the CP violating phases in the theory. It is observed that as the vacuum expectation value of the singlet gets higher values, CP violation increases.
The leading contributions to the electron (or muon) electric dipole moment due to CP violation in the charged Higgs sector are at the two-loop level. A careful analysis of the model-independent contribution is provided. We also consider specific scenarios to demonstrate how charged Higgs sector CP violation can naturally give rise to large electric dipole moments. Numerical results show that the electron electric dipole moment in such models can lie at the experimentally accessible level.
Understanding the origin of lepton number violation is one of the fundamental questions in particle physics today. Neutrinoless double beta decay provides a way in which this violation can be tested. In this article, we derive the form of hadronic and leptonic matrix elements for all possible long-range mechanisms of neutrinoless double beta decay. With these, we calculate the numerical values of the nuclear matrix elements (NME) and phase space factors (PSF) by making use of the interacting boson model of the nucleus (IBM-2) for NMEs and of exact Dirac wave functions for the PSFs. We show tha…
We propose formulas of the nuclear beta-decay rate that are useful in a practical calculation. The decay rate is determined by the product of the lepton and hadron current densities. A widely used formula relies upon the fact that the low-energy lepton wave functions in a nucleus can be well approximated by a constant and linear to the radius for the $s$-wave and $p$-wave wave functions, respectively. We find, however, the deviation from such a simple approximation is evident for heavy nuclei with large $Z$ by numerically solving the Dirac equation. In our proposed formulas, the neutrino wave …
In this work we study the anomalous top quark-gluon couplings Chromoelectric Dipole Moment (CEDM) and Chromomagnetic Dipole Moment (CMDM) in a general THDM with CP violation. We find that this model provides an important contribution from the $Y_{tt}$ Yukawa coupling that needs to be taken into account. The CMDM and CEDM obtained are $-0.03<Δ\tilde{k} < 0.005}$ and $|Δ\tilde{d}| < 0.005$, respectively.
We present an analysis of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron as induced by CP-violating operators of dimension 4, 5 and 6 including theta QCD, the EDMs and color EDMs of quarks, four-quark interactions and the Weinberg operator. We demonstrate that the precision goal of the EDM Collaboration's proposal to search for the deuteron EDM, (1-3)\times 10^{-27} e cm, will provide an improvement in sensitivity to these sources of one-two orders of magnitude relative to the existing bounds. We consider in detail the level to which CP-odd phases can be probed within the MSSM.
We analyze the electron and neutron electric dipole moments induced by R-parity violating interactions in supersymmetric models. It is pointed out that dominant contributions can come from one-loop diagrams involving both the bilinear and trilinear R-parity odd couplings, leading to somewhat severe constraints on the products of those couplings.
Supersymmetric loop corrections induce potentially large CP-violating couplings of the Higgs bosons to nucleons and electrons that do not vanish in the limit of heavy superpartners. The Higgs-mediated CP-odd four-fermion operators are enhanced by tan^3 beta and induce electric dipole moments of heavy atoms which exceed the current experimental bounds for the electroweak scale Higgs masses and tan beta > 10. If only the first two sfermion generations are heavy, the Higgs-mediated contributions typically dominate over the Barr-Zee type two-loop diagrams at tan beta > 30.
A natural explanation for the smallness of the neutrino mass requires them to be Majorana particles violating lepton number by two units. Since lepton number violation can have several interesting consequences in particle physics and cosmology, it is of utmost importance to find out if there is lepton number violation in nature and what is its magnitude. The neutrinoless double beta decay experiment can answer these questions: if there is lepton number violation and if neutrinos are Majorana particles. In addition, the magnitude of neutrinoless double beta decay will constrain any other lepton…
Assuming 3-neutrino mixing and massive Majorana neutrinos, we analyze the possibility of establishing the existence of CP-violation associated with Majorana neutrinos in the lepton sector i) by measuring of the effective Majorana mass |<m>| in neutrinoless double beta-decay with a sufficient precision and ii) by measuring of, or obtaining a stringent upper limit on, the lightest neutrino mass m1. Information on m1 can be obtained in the tritium beta decay experiment KATRIN and from astrophysical and cosmological observations. Proving that the indicated CP-violation takes place requires, in par…
In radiative $β$ decay, $T$ violation can be studied through a spin-independent $T$-odd correlation. We consider contributions to this correlation by beyond the standard model (BSM) sources of $T$-violation, arising above the electroweak scale. At the same time such sources, parametrized by dimension-6 operators, can induce electric dipole moments (EDMs). As a consequence, the manifestations of the $T$-odd BSM physics in radiative $β$ decay and EDMs are not independent. Here we exploit this connection to show that current EDM bounds already strongly constrain the spin-independent $T$-odd corre…
Assuming 3-neutrino mixing and massive Majorana neutrinos, we present some implications of the neutrino oscillation solutions of the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems and the results of the CHOOZ experiment for the predictions of the neutrinoless double-beta decay rate. If the present or upcoming searches of neutrinoless double-beta decay give a positive result, the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos will be established. From the determination of the value of the effective Majorana mass, it would be possible to obtain information on the neutrino mass spectrum. With additional informati…
We present a study of resonant leptogenesis in a radiative seesaw model. We consider the case where two quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos realize resonant leptogenesis, and the CP violation necessary to achieve leptogenesis occurs through the CP phases present in the neutrino mixing matrix. A numerical analysis is performed by taking the best-fit values from the current global data for three neutrino mixing angles and two mass-squared differences. We have shown how the predicted value of baryon asymmetry depends on the Dirac and Majorana CP phases. With the particular choice for the mass…
We calculate the neutron electric dipole form factor induced by the CP violating theta-term of QCD, within a perturbative chiral quark model which includes pion and kaon clouds. On this basis we derive the neutron electric dipole moment and the electron-neutron Schiff moment. From the existing experimental upper limits on the neutron electric dipole moment we extract constraints on the theta-parameter and compare our results with other approaches.
If the present or upcoming searches for neutrinoless double beta decay give a positive result, the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos will be established. From the determination of the value of the effective Majorana mass parameter |<m>|, it would be possible to obtain information on the type of neutrino mass spectrum. Assuming 3-neutrino mixing and massive Majorana neutrinos, we discuss the information a measurement of, or an upper bound on, |<m>| can provide on the value of the lightest neutrino mass m1. With additional data on the neutrino masses obtained in tritium beta decay experiments…
Assuming 3-$ν$ mixing, massive Majorana neutrinos and neutrinoless double-beta (\betabeta-) decay generated only by the (V-A) charged current weak interaction via the exchange of the three Majorana neutrinos, we briefly review the predictions for the effective Majorana mass $\meff$ in \betabeta-decay and reanalyse the physics potential of future \betabeta-decay experiments to provide information on the type of neutrino mass spectrum, the absolute scale of neutrino masses, and Majorana CP-violation in the lepton sector. Using as input the most recent experimental results on neutrino oscillation…
Interactions that manifest themselves as lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions typically erase any preexisting baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this article, we discuss the constraints obtained from an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay in this context. If a new physics mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay other than the standard light neutrino exchange is observed, typical scenarios of high-scale baryogenesis will be excluded unless the baryon asymmetry is stabilized via some new mechanism. We also sketch how this con…
Pair production of tau leptons in two photon collision ${γγ\to τ^{+}τ}^{-}$ is studied at CLIC to test CP violating QED couplings of tau leptons. CP violating effects are investigated using tau pair spin correlations which are observed through the hadronic decay of each $τ$ into $πν$. Competitive bounds with previous works on the electric dipole moment from CP odd terms have been obtained.
We discuss some phenomenological issues of the effective quark-lepton operators emerging from the bilinear lepton-Higgs couplings in the superpotential and in the soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking sector of the supersymmetric models without R-parity. The contribution of these operators to the neutrinoless double beta decay is derived. The corresponding nuclear matrix elements are calculated within the renormalized quasiparticle random phase approximation, which includes the Pauli effect of fermion pairs and does not collapse for the physical values of the nuclear force strength. On this basis…
We review current status of the study of parity and time invariance phenomena in atoms, nuclei and molecules. We focus on three most promising areas of research: (i) parity non-conservation in a chain of isotopes, (ii) search for nuclear anapole moments, and (iii) search for permanent electric dipole moments (EDM) of atoms and molecules which are caused by either, electron EDM or nuclear $T,P$-odd moments such as nuclear EDM and nuclear Schiff moment.
Relativity theory and its underlying Lorentz and CPT invariance represent key principles of physics and therefore require continued experimental scrutiny across the broadest possible range of energy scales and physical systems. Possibilities for tests of these symmetries in precision $β$-decay experiments with focus on KATRIN are investigated. It is found that countershaded departures from relativity, which represent a particular challenge to detection, are accessible in such experiments. In this context, it is argued that KATRIN would be in an excellent position to conduct the first-ever expe…
We show how an intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale can be a source of lepton flavor violation and EDM of electron and neutron in SUSY GUTs. The Universal soft supersymmetry breaking operators can be introduced at the GUT scale or above.
