The colour fields created by the static tetraquark and pentaquark systems are computed in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD, with gauge invariant lattice operators, in a 24^3 x 48 lattice at beta=6.2 . We generate our quenched configurations with GPUs, and detail the respective benchmanrks in different SU(N) groups. While at smaller distances the coulomb potential is expected to dominate, at larger distances it is expected that fundamental flux tubes, similar to the flux-tube between a quark and an antiquark, emerge and confine the quarks. In order to minimize the potential the fundamental flux tubes should connect at 120o angles. We compute the square of the colour fields utilizing plaquettes, and locate the static sources with generalized Wilson loops and with APE smearing. The tetraquark system is well described by a double-Y-shaped flux-tube, with two Steiner points, but when quark-antiquark pairs are close enough the two junctions collapse and we have an X-shaped flux-tube, with one Steiner point. The pentaquark system is well described by a three-Y-shaped flux-tube where the three flux the junctions are Steiner points.
We compute the colour fields of SU(3) lattice QCD created by static pentaquark systems, in a $24^3\times 48$ lattice at $β=6.2$ corresponding to a lattice spacing $a=0.07261(85)$ fm. We find that the pentaquark colour fields are well described by a multi-Y-type shaped flux tube. The flux tube junction points are compatible with Fermat-Steiner points minimizing the total flux tube length. We also compare the pentaquark flux tube profile with diquark-diantiquark central flux tube profile in the tetraquark and the quark-antiquark fundamental flux tube profile in the meson, and they match, thus sh…

We present colour field density profiles for some of the first SU(3) gluonic excitations of the flux tube in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair. The results are obtained from a large set of gluonic operators.
We discuss and rederive in a general way the logarithmic growth of the mean squared width of the colour flux tube as a function of the interquark separation. Recent data on 3D $Z_2$ gauge theory, combined with high precision data on the interface physics of the 3D Ising model fit nicely this behaviour over a range of more than two orders of magnitude.
In the dual superconductivity description of quark confinement the core of the flux tube connecting a quark pair belongs to a deconfined, hot phase. This can be checked in numerical experiments on 3D $Z_2$ gauge model. It is also pointed out that the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture provides analytic expressions for the distribution of the flux density around quark sources at critical temperature.
In a simulation of SU(2) gauge theory we investigate, after maximal Abelian projection, the dual Maxwell equations for colour field and monopole current distributions around a static quark-antiquark pair Q_ Q in vacuo. Within the dual superconductor picture we carry out a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis of the flux tube profile. As a result we can determine the coherence length of the GL wave function related to the monopole condensate, xi = .25(3) fm, to be compared to the penetration length, lambda = >.15(2) fm (scaled with the string tension).
We combine techniques previously utilised to study flux tube field density profiles and to study the excited spectrum of the gluonic fields produced by a static quark-antiquark pair. Working with pure gauge SU(3) fields discretised in a lattice, we utilise Wilson loops with a large basis of gluonic spacelike Wilson lines to include different excitations of the quark-antiquark flux tube. To increase the signal over noise ratio, we use the multihit technique in the temporal Wilson lines and the APE smearing in spatial Wilson lines. The number of gluonic operators combined with the space points w…
The spatial distribution of the action and energy in the colour fields of flux-tubes is studied in lattice SU(2) field theory for static quarks at separations up to 1 fm. Special attention is paid to the structure of the colour fields associated with an excited flux-tube with E_u symmetry. We compare our results with hadronic string and flux-tube models. Sum rules are used to extract generalised beta-functions, to describe the expected colour field behaviour and to cross check the methods used.
In lattice QCD, colour confinement manifests in flux tubes. We compute in detail the quark-antiquark flux tube for pure gauge SU(3) dimension $D=3+1$ for quark-antiquark distances R ranging from 0.4 fm to 1.4 fm. To increase the signal over noise ratio, we apply the improved multihit and extended smearing techniques. We detail the gauge invariant squared components of the colour electric and colour magnetic fields both in the mediator plane between the static quark and static antiquark and in the planes of the sources. We fit the field densities with appropriate ansatze and we observe the scre…
We present results of a high statistics study of the chromo field distribution between static quarks in SU(2) gauge theory on lattices of volumes 16^4, 32^4, and 48^3*64, with physical extent ranging from 1.3 fm up to 2.7 fm at beta=2.5, beta=2.635, and beta=2.74. We establish string formation over physical distances as large as 2 fm. The results are tested against Michael's sum rules. A detailed investigation of the transverse action and energy flux tube profiles is provided. As a by-product, we obtain the static lattice potential in unpreceded accuracy.
The spatial distribution of the action and energy in the colour fields of flux-tubes is studied in lattice SU(2) field theory for static quarks at separations up to 1 fm at beta=2.4, 2.5. The ground and excited states of the colour fields are considered. Sum rules are used to get estimates of generalised beta-functions.
We investigate the QCD flux tubes linking static colour charges of different SU(3) representations, relevant to the understanding of confinement and of the Lund strings of Heavy Ion Collisions. The colour field densities, the Casimir scaling factors and the widths for the flux tubes of the first five different representations are computed in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD. This study is relevant to understand the mechanisms of confinement and also the flux tubes utilized in the Lund Model and in other models of Heavy Ion Collisions.
The static penta-quark (5Q) potential $V_{\rm 5Q}$ is studied in SU(3) lattice QCD with $16^3\times 32$ and $β$=6.0 at the quenched level. From the 5Q Wilson loop, $V_{\rm 5Q}$ is calculated in a gauge-invariant manner, with the smearing method to enhance the ground-state component. $V_{\rm 5Q}$ is well described by the OGE plus multi-Y Ansatz: a sum of the OGE Coulomb term and the multi-Y-type linear term proportional to the minimal total length of the flux-tube linking the five quarks. Comparing with ${\rm Q \bar Q}$ and 3Q potentials, we find a universality of the string tension, $σ_{\rm Q …
Using the picture of the flux tube model, we propose that the $Θ_5$ pentaquark as the first candidate of the three-dimensional non-planar hadron with the extremely stable diamond structure. The up and down quarks lie at the corners of the diamond while the anti-strange quark sits in the center. Various un-excited color flux tubes between the five quarks bind them into a stable and narrow color-singlet. Such a configuration allows the lowest state having the negative parity naturally. The decay of the $Θ_5$ pentaquark into the nucleon and kaon requires the breakup of the non-planar diamond conf…
The colour fields created by the static tetraquark system are computed in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD, in a 24^3 x 48 lattice at beta=6.2 corresponding to a lattice spacing a=0.07261(85) fm. We find that the tetraquark colour fields are well described by a double-Y, or butterfly, shaped flux tube. The two flux tube junction points are compatible with Fermat points minimizing the total flux tube length. We also compare the diquark-diantiquark central flux tube profile in the tetraquark with the quark-antiquark fundamental flux tube profile in the meson, and they match, thus showing that the tetr…
In the confining phase of any gauge system the mean squared width of the colour flux tube joining a pair of quarks should grow logarithmically as a function of their distance, according to the effective string description of its infrared properties. New data on 3D Z_2 gauge theory, combined with high precision data on the interface physics of the 3D Ising model fit nicely this behaviour over a range of more than two orders of magnitude.
We update our numerical investigation of topological structures around static quarks in pure gauge QCD by results of the first runs including dynamical quarks. Simulations were performed on an $8^3\times4$ lattice, with $SU(3)$ Wilson action, with 3 flavours of quarks of equal mass, both in the confinement and deconfinement phase. In the confinement phase we observe indications for the existence of a flux tube between a static quark and antiquark, flux-tube breaking for large separations, and local correlation between the topological charge density and chiral condensate. In the deconfinement p…
Sum rules -- relating the static quark potential V(R) to the spatial distribution of the action and energy in the colour fields of flux-tubes -- are applied in three ways: 1) To extract generalised beta-functions: 2) As a consistency check for the use of excited gluon flux-tubes and as an estimate of the quark self-energies: 3) To extract approximate sum rules using a simplified form of V(R). Also the flux-tube profiles are compared with hadronic string and flux-tube models.
Various field strength correlators are investigated in the maximal abelian projection of pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory. High precision measurements of the colour fields, monopole currents, their curl and divergence allow for detailed checks of the dual superconductor scenario. A further decomposition of abelian observables into monopole and photon parts reveals that the flux tube is built up from the monopole part alone.
First results of an ongoing high statistics study of the colour flux distribution around static quark sources in SU(2) gauge theory are presented. The flux tube profiles and widths have been investigated for several quark separations at beta=2.5 and beta=2.74. The results are tested against Michael's sum rules.
The distributions of chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic field associated with flux tubes in the baryon are studied in SU(3) lattice QCD. Maximal Abelian projection is used to reduce the statistical fluctuations. For a fixed source geometry, many different string configurations are possible. We investigated whether the string configuration, that is the choice of operator, biases the observed flux distribution.
Quantum chromodynamics - the theory of quarks and gluons - has been known for decades, but it is yet to be fully understood. A recent example is the prediction and experimental discovery of tetraquarks, that opened a new research field. Crucially, numerous unsolved questions of the standard model can exclusively be addressed by nonperturbative calculations. Quantum computers can solve problems for which well established QCD methods are inapplicable, such as real-time evolution. We take a key step in exploring this possibility by performing a real-time evolution of tetraquark and pentaquark phy…
We review some universal features of the colour flux tube of gauge theories in the confining phase predicted by the infrared conformal limit of the underlying string theory. In particular we discuss shape effects in Wilson loops and rederive in a general way the logarithmic growth of the mean square width of the flux tube as a function of the interquark separation. Recent data on three-dimensional Z_2 gauge theory, combined with high precision data on the interface physics of the 3D Ising model fit nicely to this behaviour over a range of more than two orders of magnitude
I describe the results from lattice studies of probing the vacuum with static colour sources. Topics include (i) Twang the flux tube: string models and hybrid mesons. (ii) Charge up the flux tube: adjoint and sextet sources. (iii) Several sources: how does the colour flux get arranged?
The colour fields, created by a static gluon-quark-antiquark system, are computed in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD, in a $24^3\times 48$ lattice at $β=6.2$ and $a=0.07261(85)\,fm$. We study two geometries, one with a U shape and another with an L shape. The particular cases of the two gluon glueball and quark-antiquark are also studied, and the Casimir scaling is investigated in a microscopic perspective. This also contributes to understand confinement with flux tubes and to discriminate between the models of fundamental versus adjoint confining strings, analogous to type-II and type-I supercondu…

Action and energy flux-tube profiles are computed, in SU(2) with beta=2.4,2.5, for two quarks up to 1 fm apart and for which the colour fields are in their ground state (A_1g) and the first (E_u) and higher (A'_1g) excited gluonic states. When these profiles are integrated over all space, a scaling comparison is made between the beta=2.4 and 2.5 data. Using sum rules, these integrated forms also permit an estimate to be made of generalised beta-functions giving b(2.4)=-0.312(15), b(2.5)=-0.323(9), f(2.4)=0.65(1) and f(2.5)=0.68(1). When the profiles are integrated only over planes transverse t…

The effective string describing the large distance behaviour of the quark sources of gauge field theories in the confining phase in D=3 or D=4 space-time dimensions can be formulated, in the infrared limit, as a suitable 2D conformal field theory on surfaces with quark loops as boundaries. Recent results on self-avoiding random surfaces allow to fix almost uniquely such a conformal theory. As a consequence, some universal relationships among the string tension , the thickness of the colour flux tube, the deconfinement temperature and a lower bound of the glueball mass spectrum are found. The g…
The present knowledge of QCD confining forces between static test charges is summarised, with an emphasis on lattice results. Recent developments in relating QCD potentials to quarkonium properties by use of effective field theory methods are presented. The validity of non-relativistic QCD and the adiabatic approximation with respect to heavy quark bound states is explored. Besides the static potential and relativistic correction terms, the spectra of glueballs and gluinoballs, hybrid excitations of the QCD flux tube between fundamental colour sources, potentials between charges in various rep…
