We have investigated the stellar light distribution and the rotation curves of high-luminosity spiral galaxies in the local Universe. The sample contains 30 high-quality extended H alpha and HI rotation curves. The stellar disk scale-length of these objects was measured or taken from the literature. We find that in the outermost parts of the stellar disks of these massive objects, the rotation curves agree with the Universal Rotation Curve (Salucci et al. 2007), however a few rotation curves of the sample show a divergence.
We have examined star formation in two very luminous (M_V=-22 to -23) Sc-type spiral galaxies, NGC 801 and UGC 2885, using ultra-deep Halpha images. We combine these with UBV and 2MASS JHK images and HI maps to explore the star formation characteristics of disk galaxies at high luminosity. Halpha traces star formation in these galaxies to 4-6 disk scale lengths, but the lack of detection of Halpha further out is likely due to loss of Lyman continuum photons. Considering gravitational instabilities alone, we find that the gas and stars in the outer regions are marginally stable in an average se…
In the past years a wealth of observations has unraveled the structural properties of the Dark and Luminous mass distribution in spirals. These have pointed out to an intriguing scenario not easily explained by present theories of galaxy formation. The investigation of individual and coadded objects has shown that the spiral rotation curves follow, from their centers out to their virial radii, a Universal profile (URC) that arises from the tuned combination of a stellar disk and of a dark halo. The importance of the latter component decreases with galaxy mass. Individual objects, on the other …
The presence of luminous hot X-ray coronae in the dark matter halos of massive spiral galaxies is a basic prediction of galaxy formation models. However, observational evidence for such coronae is very scarce, with the first few examples having only been detected recently. In this paper, we study the large-scale diffuse X-ray emission associated with the massive spiral galaxy NGC266. Using ROSAT and Chandra X-ray observations we argue that the diffuse emission extends to at least ~70 kpc, whereas the bulk of the stellar light is confined to within ~25 kpc. Based on X-ray hardness ratios, we fi…
We present the results of CO (J=1-0) observations towards nine barred spiral galaxies at z=0.08-0.25 using the 45-m telescope at Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO). This survey is the first one specialized for barred spiral galaxies in this redshift range. We detected CO emission from six out of nine galaxies, whose CO luminosity (L_CO') ranges (1.09-10.8)\times10^9 K km s^{-1} pc^2. These are the infrared (IR) dimmest galaxies that have ever been detected in CO at z~0.1 to date. They follow the L_CO'-L_IR relation among local spiral galaxies, Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), Ultra-Luminous I…
We attribute the observed rotational velocity profiles of spiral galaxy disks to a combination of Newtonian and exponential gravitational potentials. We offer a novel, yet perfectly plausible, Lagrangian from which the exponential potential is derived. The exponential potential is defined by two universal constants (corresponding to a coupling constant and a graviton mass) that we determine from our sample of 12 THINGS disks. All velocity profile fits are excellent.
We present a heuristic model for predicting the rotation curves of spiral galaxies. The Luminous Convolution Model (LCM) utilizes Lorentz-type transformations of very small changes in photon frequencies from curved space-times to construct a model predictive of galaxy rotation profile observations. These frequency changes are derived from the Schwarzschild red-shift result or the analogous result from a Kerr wave equation. The LCM maps the small curvatures of the emitter galactic frame onto those of the receiver galactic frame, and then returns the map to the associated flat frames where measu…
An expression for rotational velocity of a test particle around the central mass in the invariant plane is derived. For this, a line element of Schwarzschild de-Sitter space-time is used to study the effect of cosmological constant ($Λ$) on the motion of both massive and massless particles. Using rotation curve data of 15 nearby spiral and barred spiral galaxies, we estimated the mass and $Λ$ of the galaxy. The mass of the galaxies are found to lie in the range 0.13-7.60 $\times$ 10$^{40}$ kg. The cosmological constant ($Λ$) is found to be negative ($-$0.03 to $-$0.10 $\times$ 10$^{-40}$ km$^{…
We present dynamically-determined rotation-curve mass decompositions of 30 spiral galaxies, which were carried out to test the maximum-disk hypothesis and to quantify properties of their dark-matter (DM) halos. We used measured vertical velocity dispersions of the disk stars to calculate dynamical mass surface densities. Together with our atomic and molecular gas mass surface densities, we derived the stellar mass surface densities, and thus have absolute measurements of all dominant baryonic components. Using K-band surface brightness profiles, we calculated the K-band mass-to-light ratio of …
We present analyses of the physical conditions in the z=0.22496 and z=0.22638 multi-phase O VI absorption systems detected in the ultraviolet HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of the quasar H1821+643. Both absorbers are likely associated with the extended halo of a ~2L* Sbc-Sc galaxy situated at a projected distance of ~116 kpc from the sight line. The z=0.22496 absorber is detected in C II, C III, C IV, O III, O VI, Si II, Si III and H I at > 3 sigma significance. The low and intermediate ions in this absorber are consistent with an origin in photoionized gas with [Si/H] and [C/H] of -0.6 dex. In con…
We present the stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 5 Luminous Compact Galaxies (LCGs) at z=0.5-0.7. These galaxies are vigorously forming stars with average SFR $\sim$ 40 M$_{\odot}$/yr. We find that their velocity dispersions range from $\sim137\ \rm{km/s}$ to $260\ \rm{km/s}$, while their stellar masses range between $4\times 10^{9}$ and $10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$. If these LCGs evolve passively after this major burst of star formation, their masses and velocity dispersions, as well as their evolved colours and luminosities are most consistent with the values characteristic of early-type…
In this work we study rotation curves of spiral galaxies using a model of dark matter based on a scalar-tensor theory of gravity. We show how to estimate the scalar field dark matter parameters using a sample of observed rotation curves.
The Tully-Fisher relation of spiral galaxies shows notable dependence on morphological types, with earlier type spirals having systematically lower luminosity at fixed maximum rotation velocity $V_{max}$. This decrement of luminosity is more significant in shorter wavelengths. By modeling the rotation curve and stellar population of different morphological type spiral galaxies in combination, we find the $V_{max}$ of spiral galaxies is weakly dependent on the morphological type, whereas the difference of the stellar population originating from the bulge disk composition effect mainly account f…
It was recently shown that in cosmology the gravitational action of faraway matter has quite relevant effects, if retardation of the forces and discreteness of matter (with its spatial correlation) are taken into account. Indeed, far matter was found to exert, on a test particle, a force per unit mass of the order of 0.2 cH0 . It is shown here that such a force can account for the observed rotational velocity curves in spiral galaxies, if the force is assumed to be decorrelated beyond a sufficiently large distance, of the order of 1 kpc. In particular we fit the rotation curves of the galaxies…
We report evidence for dynamically significant rotation in the globular cluster systems of two luminous Virgo dwarf ellipticals, VCC1261 and VCC1528. Including previous results for VCC1087, the globular cluster systems of all three Virgo dwarf ellipticals studied in detail to date exhibit v_rot/sigma > 1. Taking the rotation seen in the globular clusters as maximal disk rotation, we find all three dEs lie on the r-band Tully-Fisher relation. We argue that these data support the hypothesis that luminous dEs are the remnants of transformed disk galaxies. We also obtained deep, longslit data for …
The gravitational field of Spiral galaxies is well traced by their rotation curves. Only recently it has become of extreme interest that the latter form a family ruled by two parameters of the {\it luminous} component: the disk length-scale $R_D$ and the magnitude $M_I$. This evidence is so strong and consequential that it must be taken as the starting point for the investigation on the issue of the dark matter in galaxies. The emerging fact is that structural quantities deeply rooted in the luminous components, like the disk length scales are found to tightly correlate with structural quantit…
We study the kinematics and scaling relations of a sample of 43 giant spiral galaxies that have stellar masses exceeding $10^{11}$ $M_\odot$ and optical discs up to 80 kpc in radius. We use a hybrid 3D-1D approach to fit 3D kinematic models to long-slit observations of the H$α$-[NII] emission lines and we obtain robust rotation curves of these massive systems. We find that all galaxies in our sample seem to reach a flat part of the rotation curve within the outermost optical radius. We use the derived kinematics to study the high-mass end of the two most important scaling relations for spiral …
The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) is systematically charting the optical transient and variable sky. A primary science driver of PTF is building a complete inventory of transients in the local Universe (distance less than 200 Mpc). Here, we report the discovery of PTF10fqs, a transient in the luminosity "gap" between novae and supernovae. Located on a spiral arm of Messier 99, PTF 10fqs has a peak luminosity of Mr = -12.3, red color (g-r = 1.0) and is slowly evolving (decayed by 1 mag in 68 days). It has a spectrum dominated by intermediate-width H (930 km/s) and narrow calcium emission line…
The most spiral galaxies have a flat rotational velocity curve, according to the different observational techniques used in several wavelengths domain. In this work, we show that non-linear terms are able to balance the dispersive effect of the wave, thus reviving the observed rotational curve profiles without inclusion of any other but baryonic matter concentrated in the bulge and disk. In order to prove that the considered model is able to restore a flat rotational curve, Milky Way has been chosen as the best mapped galaxy to apply on. Using the gravitational N-body simulations with up to $1…
We focus on a modified version of Horava - Lifschitz theory and, in particular, we consider the impact of its weak - field static spherically symmetric limit on the galaxy dynamics. In a previous paper, we used the modified gravitational potential obtained in this theory to evaluate the Milky Way rotation curve using a spheroidal truncated power - law bulge and a double exponential disc as the only sources of the gravitational field and showed that the modified rotation curved is not in agreement with the data. Making a step forward, we here include also the contribution from a dark matter hal…
