Many theories of particle physics beyond the Standard Model predict long-lived fields that may have dominated the Universe at early times and then decayed. Their decay, which injects entropy in the thermal bath, is responsible for a second reheating, dubbed re-reheating, that could substantially dilute the matter-antimatter asymmetry created before. In this paper we analyze such late re-reheating and entropy dilution. It turns out that in some cases the usual analytic calculation badly fails if it is not rectified by some corrective factors that we provide. We also determine the parameter space where the entropy dilution compromises models of baryogenesis. This region can be obtained by imposing some generic constraints that are applicable to any baryogenesis mechanism and long-lived field satisfying a few assumptions. For instance, by applying them to MSSM electroweak baryogenesis, thermal non-resonant leptogenesis and thermal resonant leptogenesis, we obtain that the initial abundances of long-lived fields with lifetime longer than respectively 5*10^13, 10^-2 and 10^15 GeV^-1 are strongly constrained. Similarly, the same baryogenesis scenarios are incompatible with large oscillations of moduli with mass smaller than O(10^8), O(10^13) and O(10^7) GeV that are naturally coupled to the visible sector via gravitational dimension-five operators.
Modulated reheating scenario is one of the most attractive models that predict possible detections of not only the primordial non-Gaussianity but also the tensor fluctuation through future CMB observations such as the Planck satellite, the PolarBeaR and the LiteBIRD satellite experiments. We study the baryonic-isocurvature fluctuations in the Affleck-Dine baryogenesis with the modulated reheating scenario. We show that the Affleck-Dine baryogenesis can be consistent with the modulated reheating scenario with respect to the current observational constraint on the baryonic-isocurvature fluctuati…
If inflaton couples very weakly to ordinary matter the reheating temperature of the universe can be lower than the electroweak scale. In this letter we show that the late reheating occurs in a highly non-uniform way, within narrow areas along the jets produced by ordinary particles originated from inflaton decays. Depending on inflaton mass and decay constant, the initial temperature inside the lumps of the overheated plasma may be large enough to trigger the unsuppressed sphaleron processes with baryon number non-conservation, allowing for efficient local electroweak baryogenesis.
We calculate the baryon asymmetry value generated in the Scalar Field Condensate (SCF) baryogenesis model obtained in several inflationary scenarios and different reheating models. We provide analysis of the baryon asymmetry value obtained for more than 70 sets of parameters of the SCF model and the following inflationary scenarios, namely: new inflation, chaotic inflation, Starobinsky inflation, MSSM inflation, quintessential inflation. We considered both cases of efficient thermalization after inflation and also delayed thermalization. We have found that SFC baryogenesis model produces baryo…
We calculate the baryon asymmetry created by the decay of a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson whose interactions violate baryon number conservation. Our results are in disagreement with previous results in the original spontaneous baryogenesis models for the asymmetry produced by the decay of an oscillating scalar field with B number violating derivative couplings; we find that the net baryon number density is proportional to $þ_i^3$, where $þ_i$ is the amplitude of the PNGB-field in natural inflation at the onset of reheating. We also discuss our disagreement with the interpretation of $\dotθ$ as …
Recently we extended the standard model by four TeV-scale fields including a singlet fermion, an isotriplet and two isosinglet diquark scalars to generate the cosmological baryon asymmetry with an observable neutron-antineutron oscillation. We now supersymmetrize our model but do not constrain it at the TeV scale. The superpartner of the singlet fermion can serve as an inflaton field. Its three-body decays, mediated by the isosinglet diquarks and their superpartners, can simultaneously provide a low reheating temperature and a sizable CP asymmetry. We thus can realize a nonthermal baryogenesis…
We propose a WIMP baryogensis achieved by the annihilation of non-thermally produced WIMPs from decay of heavy particles, which can result in low reheating temerature. Dark matter (DM) can be produced non-thermally during a reheating period created by the decay of long-lived heavy particle, and subsequently re-annihilate to lighter particles even after the thermal freeze-out. The re-annihilation of DM provides the observed baryon asymmetry as well as the correct relic density of DM. We investigate how wahout effects can affect the generation of the baryon asymmetry and study a model suppressin…
We note that the maximum temperature during reheating can be much greater than the reheating temperature $T_r$ at which the Universe becomes radiation dominated. We show that the Standard Model anomalous $(B+L)$-violating processes can therefore be in thermal equilibrium for 1 GeV $\simlt T_{r}\ll 100$ GeV. Electroweak baryogenesis could work and the traditional upper bound on the Higgs mass coming from the requirement of the preservation of the baryon asymmetry may be relaxed. Alternatively, the baryon asymmetry may be reprocessed by sphaleron transitions either from a $(B-L) $ asymmetry gene…
The latent heat released during the expansion of bubbles in the electroweak phase transition reheats the plasma and causes the bubble growth to slow down. This decrease of the bubble wall velocity affects the result of electroweak baryogenesis. Since the efficiency of baryogenesis peaks for a wall velocity $\sim 10^{-2}$, the resulting baryon asymmetry can either be enhanced or suppressed, depending on the initial value of the wall velocity. We calculate the evolution of the phase transition taking into account the release of latent heat. We find that, although in the SM the baryon production …
The phenomenology of supersymmetric models of inflation, where the inflationary vacuum energy is dominated by D-terms of a U(1), is investigated. Particular attention is paid to the questions of how to arrange for sufficient e-folds of inflation to occur, what kind of thermal history is expected after the end of inflation, and how to implement successful baryogenesis. Such models are argued to require a more restrictive symmetry structure than previously thought. In particular, it is non-trivial that the decays of the fields driving D-inflation can reheat the universe in such a way as to avoid…
In this paper, we investigate the parameter space in the framework of hilltop supernatural inflation in which the inflaton field can play the role of Affleck-Dine field to produce successful baryogenesis. The suitable value of reheating temperature could coincide with the reheating temperature required to produce lightest supersymmetric particle dark matter. The baryon isocurvature perturbation is shown to be negligible. We consider $p=3$, $p=4$, and $p=6$ type III hilltop inflation and discuss how to connect the models to supersymmetric theories.
Mechanisms for the generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter strongly depend on the reheating temperature T_R, the maximal temperature reached in the early universe. Forthcoming results from the LHC, low energy experiments, astrophysical observations and the Planck satellite will significantly constrain baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter, and thereby provide valuable information about the very early hot universe. At present, a wide range of reheating temperatures is still consistent with observations. We illustrate possible origins of matter and dark matter with fou…
A semiclassical calculation of particle production by a scalar field in a potential is performed. We focus on the particular case of production of fermions by a Nambu-Goldstone boson $θ$. We have derived a (non)local equation of motion for the $θ$-field with the backreaction of the produced particles taken into account. The equation is solved in some special cases, namely for purely Nambu-Goldstone bosons and for the tilted potential $ U(θ) \propto m^2 θ^2 $. Enhanced production of bosons due to parametric resonance is investigated; we argue that the resonance probably disappears when the expa…
The discovery of the primordial B-mode polarisation by the BICEP2 experiment indicates inflation with a relatively high energy scale. Taking this indication into account, we propose consistent scenarios to account for the observed baryon and dark matter densities in gravity and gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models. The baryon asymmetry is explained by the Afflck-Dine mechanism, which requires relatively low reheating temperature to avoid a sizable baryonic isocurvature perturbation. The low reheating temperature then requires non-thermal production of dark matter to account for the cor…
We propose a new scenario of Affleck-Dine baryogenesis where a flat direction in the MSSM generates B-L asymmetry just after the end of inflation. The resulting amount of baryon asymmetry is independent of low-energy supersymmetric models but is dependent on inflation models. We consider the hybrid and chaotic inflation models and find that reheating temperature is required to be higher than that in the conventional scenario of Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. In particular, non-thermal gravitino-overproduction problem is naturally avoided in the hybrid inflation model. Our results imply that Afflec…
A new scenario of baryogenesis via the ratchet mechanism is proposed based on an analogy to the forced pendulum. The oscillation of the inflaton field during the reheating epoch after inflation plays the role of the driving force, while the phase $θ$ of a scalar baryon field (a complex scalar field with baryon number) plays the role of the angle of the pendulum. When the inflaton is coupled to the scalar baryon, the behavior of the phase $θ$ can be analogous to that of the angle of the forced pendulum. If the oscillation of the driving force is adjusted to the pendulum's motion, a directed rot…
We re-examine Affleck-Dine baryo/leptogenesis from the oscillation of condensates along flat directions of the supersymmetric standard model, which attained large vevs at the end of inflationary epoque. The key observation is that superpotential interactions couple the flat directions to other fields, which acquire masses induced by the flat-direction vev that may be sufficiently small for them to be kinematically accessible to inflaton decay. The resulting plasma of inflaton decay products then may act on the flat directions via these superpotential Yukawa couplings, inducing thermal masses a…
We consider the B-ball cosmology of the MSSM in the context of D-term inflation models where the reheating temperature is determined by the Affleck-Dine mechanism to be of the order of 1 GeV. We show that such a low reheating temperature can arise quite naturally as the result of a symmetry which is required to maintain the flatness of the inflaton potential. In this case the B-balls will decay well after the freeze-out temperature of the LSP, allowing baryons and cold dark matter to originate primarily from B-ball decays.
The Affleck-Dine mechanism creates the baryon asymmetry of the universe from an angular motion of a complex scalar field. The mechanism is efficient and allows for a low reheating temperature of the universe if the scalar field has a flat potential along its radial direction. We consider a possibility where the scalar field is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson arising from spontaneous breaking of an approximate global symmetry, so that the flatness of the potential is naturally understood. We construct a concrete realization of the idea based on chiral symmetry breaking in an SU(N) gauge theory. …
We here propose a mechanism that predicts, at early times, both baryon asymmetry and dark matter origin and that recovers the spontaneous baryogenesis during the reheating. Working with $U(1)$-invariant quark $Q$ and lepton $L$ effective fields, with an interacting term that couples the evolution of Universe's environment field $ψ$, we require a spontaneous symmetry breaking and get a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson $θ$. The pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson speeds the Universe up during inflation, playing the role of inflaton, enabling baryogenesis to occur. Thus, in a quasi-static approximation over…
Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in models where the gravitino is both the lightest supersymmetric particle and the dark matter candidate is investigated. For a high enough reheating temperature to produce sufficient gravitinos by thermal processes, the observed baryon asymmetry can be explained by Affleck-Dine baryogenesis as well as thermal leptogenesis. On the other hand, if the reheating temperature is not high enough, most of the gravitinos must be produced by the decay of the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NSP). Particularly, in the case where Q-balls cannot survive the evaporation, …
We study the evolution of a cosmological baryon asymmetry in leptogenesis when the right-handed neutrinos are produced in inflaton decays. By performing a detailed numerical study over a broad range of inflaton-neutrino couplings we show that the resulting asymmetry can be larger by two orders of magnitude or more than in thermal leptogenesis, if the reheating temperature T_{RH} is of the same order as the right-handed neutrino mass M_1. Hence, the lower limit on the baryogenesis temperature obtained in thermal leptogenesis can be relaxed accordingly.
A baryogenesis scenario in supersymmetric standard models with Dirac neutrinos proposed by Abel and Page is reconsidered with introducing intermediate scale physics to stabilize the runaway potential along a right-handed sneutrino direction. In contrary with previous results, the baryon number asymmetry can be explained even for higher reheating temperature without entropy production if the lightest neutrino mass is small and/or thermal effects induce early oscillation. We discuss the solution to the problem of dark matter overproduction by the right-handed sneutrino decay by SU(2)_R gauge int…
In general the gravitino mass and/or the soft supersymmetry breaking masses in the observable sector can be much larger than the TeV scale. Depending on the relation between the masses, new important channels for gravitino production in the early Universe can arise. Gravitinos with a mass above 50 TeV decay before big bang nucleosynthesis, which leads to relaxation of the well known bound on the reheating temperature $T_{\rm R} \leq 10^{10}$ GeV. However, if the heavy gravitinos are produced abundantly in the early Universe, their decay can alter the abundance of the lightest supersymmetric pa…
We discuss baryogenesis in scenarios where the Universe is reheated to temperatures $\lesssim 100\,$GeV by the decay of long-lived massive particles into energetic SM particles. Before its thermalization, the center-of-mass energy in collisions between such a particle and a particle from the ambient plasma can be higher than the typical sphaleron mass, even if the temperature of the plasma itself is much lower. Optimistic estimates for the high energy enhancement of the sphaleron cross section suggest that successful baryogenesis is possible for reheating temperatures as low as $0.1\text{-}1\,…
In the inflationary scenario all the matter constituting the universe was created from the process of reheating after inflation. Recent development of the theory of reheating is briefly reviewed. The list of topics includes elementary (perturbative) theory of reheating; quantum field theory in a time-varying background; parametric resonance and explosive particle creation; non-thermal phase transitions from reheating; baryogenesis from reheating; residual oscillations of the scalar field, and other cosmological applications.
Spectator field models such as the curvaton scenario and the modulated reheating are attractive scenarios for the generation of the cosmic curvature perturbation, as the constraints on inflation models are relaxed. In this paper, we discuss the effect of Hubble induced masses on the dynamics of spectator fields after inflation. We pay particular attention to the Hubble induced mass by the kinetic energy of an oscillating inflaton, which is generically unsuppressed but often overlooked. In the curvaton scenario, the Hubble induced mass relaxes the constraint on the property of the inflaton and …
We propose a novel leptogenesis scenario at the reheating era. Our setup is minimal in the sense that, in addition to the standard model Lagrangian, we only consider an inflaton and higher dimensional operators. The lepton number asymmetry is produced not by the decay of a heavy particle, but by the scattering between the standard model particles. After the decay of an inflaton, the model is described within the standard model with higher dimensional operators. The Sakharov's three conditions are satisfied by the following way. The violation of the lepton number is realized by the dimension-5 …
At the end of inflation the universe is frozen in a near zero-entropy state with energy density in a coherent scalar field and must be ``defrosted'' to produce the observed entropy and baryon number. We propose that the baryon asymmetry is generated by the decay of supermassive Grand Unified Theory (GUT) bosons produced non-thermally in a preheating phase after inflation. We show that baryogenesis is possible for an inflaton masses of order 10^{13} GeV and a GUT Higgs boson mass of order 10^{14} GeV, thus solving many drawbacks facing GUT baryogenesis in the old reheating scenario.
Helical magnetic fields are injected into the cosmic medium during cosmological baryogenesis and can potentially provide a useful probe of the early universe. We construct a model to study the injection process during a first order phase transition and to determine the power spectra of the injected magnetic field. By Monte Carlo simulations we evaluate the Fourier space symmetric and helical power spectra of the magnetic field at the time the phase transition completes. The spectra are peaked at the scale given by the inverse size of bubbles at percolation and with a comparable width. These in…
We study baryogenesis in effective field theories where a $\mathrm{U}(1)_{ B-L}$-charged scalar couples to gravity via curvature invariants. We analyze the general possibilities in such models, noting the relationships between some of them and existing models, such as Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. We then identify a novel mechanism in which $\mathrm{U}(1)_{ B-L}$ can be broken by couplings to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant during inflation and reheating. Using analytic methods, we demonstrate that this mechanism provides a new way to dynamically generate the net matter-anti-matter asymmetry observed …
We calculate the relaxation rate of a scalar field in a plasma of other scalars and fermions with gauge interactions using thermal quantum field theory. It yields the rate of cosmic reheating and thereby determines the temperature of the "hot big bang" in inflationary cosmology. The total rate originates from various processes, including decays and inverse decays as well as Landau damping by scatterings. It involves quantum statistical effects and off-shell transport. Its temperature dependence can be highly nontrivial, making it impossible to express the reheating temperature in terms of the …
Inflationary reheating via resonant production of non-minimally coupled scalar particles with only gravitational coupling is shown to be extremely strong, exhibiting a negative coupling instability for $ξ< 0$ and a wide resonance decay for $ξ\gg 1$. Since non-minimal fields are generic after renormalisation in curved spacetime, this offers a new paradigm in reheating - one which naturally allows for efficient production of the massive bosons needed for GUT baryogenesis. We also show that both vector and tensor fields are produced resonantly during reheating, extending the previously known corr…
The behaviour of oscillating scalar spectator fields after inflation depends on the thermal background produced by inflaton decay. Resonant decay of the spectator is often blocked by large induced thermal masses. We account for the finite decay width of the inflaton and the protracted build-up of the thermal bath to determine the early evolution of a homogeneous spectator field, σ, coupled to the Higgs Boson, Φ, through the term g^2 σ^2 Φ^2, the only renormalisable coupling of a new scalar to the Standard Model. We find that for very large higgs-spectator coupling g > 10^{-3}, the resonance is…
The spectrum of energy density fluctuations, baryon asymmetry, and coherent large-scale magnetic fields are the three observables that provide crucial information on physics at very high energies. Inflation can only provide a mechanism to explain the density perturbations, and the origin of primordial magnetic fields and baryon asymmetry require physics beyond the standard models of cosmology and particle physics. In this work, we show that the mechanism that leads to primordial helical fields also leads to baryogenesis at the beginning of the radiation-dominated epoch. The model we consider h…

In this letter we explore the possibility of creating the baryon asymmetry of the universe during inflation and reheating due to the decay of a field associated with the inflaton. CP violation is attained by assuming that this field is complex with a phase that varies as the inflaton evolves. We consider chaotic and natural inflation scenarios. In the former case, the complex decaying field is the inflaton itself and, in the latter case, the phase of the complex field is the inflaton. We calculate the asymmetry produced using the Bogolyubov formalism that relates annihilation and creation oper…
We consider a baryogenesis scenario, where the difference of baryon (B) and lepton (L) number is conserved in such a way that the B-L asymmetry in the standard model sector is compensated by an asymmetry of opposite sign stored in the dark energy sector. Therefore, we introduce a toy-model in which a complex quintessence field carries a B-L asymmetry at late times. We determine the produced baryon asymmetry in the visible sector for a large range of initial conditions and find it easy to achieve a value of the observed order of magnitude. While the size of the produced baryon asymmetry depends…
We discuss a new mechanism for baryogenesis, in which the baryon asymmetry is generated by the lightest particle in another sector, for example the supersymmetric particle (LSP), decaying to quarks via baryonic-number-violating interactions. As a specific example, we use a supersymmetric axion model with an axino LSP and baryonic $R$-parity violation. This scenario predicts large $R$-parity violation for the stop, and an upper limit on the squark masses between {15 and 130 TeV}, for different choices of the Peccei-Quinn scale and the soft $X_t$ terms. We discuss the implications for the nature…
The early universe could feature multiple reheating events, leading to jumps in the visible sector entropy density that dilute both particle asymmetries and the number density of frozen-out states. In fact, late time entropy jumps are usually required in models of Affleck-Dine baryogenesis, which typically produces an initial particle-antiparticle asymmetry that is much too large. An important consequence of late time dilution, is that a smaller dark matter annihilation cross section is needed to obtain the observed dark matter relic density. For cosmologies with high scale baryogenesis, follo…
We present a novel scenario for baryogenesis in a hybrid inflation model at the electroweak scale, in which the Standard Model Higgs field triggers the end of inflation. One of the conditions for successful baryogenesis, the departure from thermal equilibrium, is naturally achieved at the stage of preheating after inflation. The inflaton oscillations induce large occupation numbers for long-wavelength configurations of Higgs and gauge fields, which leads to a large rate of sphaleron transitions. We estimate this rate during the first stages of reheating and evaluate the amount of baryons produ…
The analysis of theories with non-minimal coupling of Higgs field to gravity revealed that they enter into strong coupling regime above certain Higgs-dependent cutoff, which may be considerably below the Planck scale. Assuming that the effective theory, complementing the Standard Model or its minimal extension--the nuMSM--contains a set of higher dimensional operators suppressed by the Higgs-dependent cutoff, we analyse the reheating of the Universe after the Higgs inflation. We show that extra terms do not spoil the Higgs inflation, but can lead to baryogenesis and to warm sterile neutrino da…
We reconsider the Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis and show that the baryonic isocurvature fluctuations are generated in many inflation models in supergravity. The inflationary scale and the reheating temperature must satisfy certain constraints to avoid too large baryonic isocurvature fluctuations.
In models of inflation driven by an axion-like pseudoscalar field, the inflaton, a, may couple to the standard model hypercharge via a Chern-Simons-type interaction, $L \subset a/(4Λ) F\tilde{F}$. This coupling results in explosive gauge field production during inflation, especially at its last stage, which has interesting phenomenological consequences: For one thing, the primordial hypermagnetic field is maximally helical. It is thus capable of sourcing the generation of nonzero baryon number, via the standard model chiral anomaly, around the time of electroweak symmetry breaking. For another…
We discuss the mechanism of reheating in pre-big bang string cosmology and we calculate the amount of moduli and gravitinos produced gravitationally and in scattering processes of the thermal bath. We find that this abundance always exceeds the limits imposed by big-bang nucleosynthesis, and significant entropy production is required. The exact amount of entropy needed depends on the details of the high curvature phase between the dilaton-driven inflationary era and the radiation era. We show that the domination and decay of the zero-mode of a modulus field, which could well be the dilaton, or…

We investigate the thermalization process of the Universe after inflation to determine the evolution of the effective temperature. The time scale of thermalization is found to be so long that it delays the evolution of the effective temperature, and the resulting maximal temperature of the Universe can be significantly lower than the one obtained in the literature. Our results clarify the finite density corrections to the effective potential of a scalar field and also processes of heavy particle production. In particular, we find that the maximum temperature of the Universe may be at most elec…
The usual sphaleron bound and the statement of the impossibility of baryon production at a second order phase transition or analytic cross-over are reformulated in the first part of the paper as requirements of the expansion rate of the Universe at the electroweak scale. With an (exact or effective) additional contribution to the energy density scaling as 1/a^6, which dominates until just before nucleosynthesis, the observed baryon asymmetry may be produced at the electroweak scale in simple extensions of the Minimal Standard Model, even in the case that the phase transition is not first order…
In this article, I have studied the cosmological and particle physics constraints on a generic class of large field ($|Δϕ|>M_{p}$) and small field ($|Δϕ<M_{p}$) models of brane inflationary magnetic field from: (1) tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$), (2) reheating, (3) leptogenesis and (4) baryogenesis in case of Randall-Sundrum single braneworld gravity (RSII) framework. I also establish a direct connection between the magnetic field at the present epoch ($B_{0}$) and primordial gravity waves ($r$), which give a precise estimate of non-vanishing CP asymmetry ($ε_{CP}$) in leptogenesis and baryon as…
Scalar fields can play a dominant role in the dynamics of the Universe until shortly before nucleosynthesis. Examples are provided by domination by a kinetic mode of a scalar field, which may be both the inflaton and the late time `quintessence', and also by more conventional models of reheating. The resultant modification to the pre-nucleosynthesis expansion rate can allow solely an asymmetry in right handed electrons to produce a net baryon asymmetry when reprocessed by the anomalous B+L violating processes of the standard model. The production of such a source asymmetry - what we term `elec…
