A data-driven method for simultaneously extracting a potential Higgs to ZZ to 4e, 4mu, 2e2mu signal and its dominant backgrounds, is presented. The method relies on a combined fit of the 2-lepton, Z*, and 4-lepton invariant masses. The fit is assisted by normalization of the Z+X backgrounds in data control regions. The Higgs discovery potential for the next few years of LHC running is presented. The demonstrated high sensitivity of the method makes it ideal for the search performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments.
In the following, the prospects for measuring the SM Higgs properties at the LHC are reviewed, in particular its mass, width, spin, CP eigenstates as well as its couplings to the SM fermions and gauge bosons. The possibility of performing the difficult trilinear Higgs self-coupling measurement is also discussed.
While approaching the start of the data taking at the LHC, ATLAS and CMS perform studies involving the Higgs boson within non-minimal models besides Supersymmetric models. Highlights from both experiments are summarized; all results refer to LHC low luminosity conditions of 10^33 cm^-2 s^-1.
A very simple and transparent way for the mass definition of a new boson, probably Higgs (H), observed at LHC, decaying into 4 leptons, is presented. The obtained mass of H is 125.5+/-0.4 GeV with today statistics.
At the end of 2008, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will come into operation and the two experiments ATLAS and CMS will start taking data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s}=14 TeV. In preparation for the data taking period, the discovery potential for Higgs bosons beyond the Standard Model has been updated by both experiments and is reviewed here. In addition, the prospects for measuring the properties of a Higgs boson like its mass and width, its CP eigenvalues and its couplings to fermions and gauge bosons are discussed.
There exist substantial backgrounds to the vector boson fusion production of Higgs at the LHC. Mass variables are studied which may alleviate the need to assume a spin zero WW resonance in order to achieve a sufficient signal to noise ratio in the two jet plus two lepton and missing energy final state.
Models of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, like the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), often involve an extended Higgs sector, giving rise to extra neutral or charged Higgs bosons. The discovery reach expected from simulation studies for such additional Higgs particles is presented for the ATLAS, CMS and FP420 detectors at the LHC. Emphasis is put on production and decay modes involving heavy flavour b and tau particles, which are enhanced in large regions of BSM parameter space. These proceedings summarize the sensitivity for the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC to discover a Standard Model Higgs boson with relatively low integrated luminosity per experiment. A brief discussion on the expected performance from these experiments in searches for one or more of the Higgs bosons from the minimal version of the supersymmetric theories is also included.
The inclusive search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in four-lepton final states with the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the LHC pp collider is presented. The discussion focusses on the H-> ZZ^(*)->4l+X decay mode for a Higgs boson in the mass range 120 ~< M_H ~< 600 GeV/c^2. A prospective analysis is presented for the discovery potential based on a detailled simulation of the detector response in the experimental conditions of the first years of LHC running at low luminosity. An overview of the expected sensitivity in the measurement of the Higgs boson properties is also given.
We show prospects on a search for invisible decays of a Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). This search is performed on a Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson. We expect that the branching ratio of 17-22% (6-14%) could be excluded at 95% confidence level with 300 fb^{-1} (3000 fb^{-1}) of data at sqrt(s)=14 TeV. The range indicates different assumptions on the control of systematic uncertainties. Interpretations with Higgs-portal dark matter models are also considered.
Despite the discovery of the Higgs boson decay in five separate channels many parameters of the Higgs boson remain largely unconstrained. In this paper, we present a new approach to constraining the Higgs total width by requiring the Higgs to be resolved as a single high p$_T$ jet and measuring the inclusive Higgs boson cross section. To measure the inclusive Higgs boson cross section, we rely on new approaches from machine learning and a modified jet reconstruction. Higgs production in association with a photon at hadron colliders is a rare process, not yet observed at the LHC. We show that this process is sensitive to significant deviations of Higgs couplings to first and second generation SM quarks (particularly the up-type) from their SM values, and use a multivariate neural network analysis to derive the prospects of the High Luminosity LHC to probe deviations in the up and charm Higgs Yukawa couplings through $h + γ$ production.
We describe recent developments of the public computer code HiggsBounds. In particular, these include the incorporation of LHC Higgs search results from Run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and an updated and extended framework for the theoretical input that accounts for improved Higgs cross section and branching ratio predictions and new search channels. The LHC program for discovery of light charged Higgs with mass 135-180 GeV has to take into account decay $H^+\to \bar{b}\,t^*\to W^+b\bar{b}$. The distribution of decay products in effective mass of $t^*=Wb$ is obtained.
We have systematically investigated the production of a Higgs boson with a mass of about $125$ GeV in the decays of supersymmetric particles within the phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM). We find regions of parameter space that are consistent with all world data and that predict a sizeable rate of anomalous Higgs, di-Higgs and even tri-Higgs events at the 14 TeV LHC. In a number of Higgs-portal models, an $SU(2)$ isospin-singlet scalar boson generically appears at the electroweak scale and can mix with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with a mixing angle $α$. This singlet scalar boson can have renormalizable couplings to a pair of dark matter particles, vectorlike leptons or quarks, or new gauge bosons, thereby modifying the Higgs signal strengths in a nontrivial way. This article reviews recent beyond Standard Model Higgs boson searches using Run I LHC proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector. The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC opened up a new possibility to obtain a precise understanding of the origin of mass and the structure of the vacuum. Several theories beyond the Standard Model predict an extended Higgs sector, with additional scalar particles. We outline the complementary search possibilities for these beyond Standard Model Higgs bosons at the LHC and at possible future high-energy collider facilities.
In the context of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) we examine the constraints on the trilinear Higgs coupling that originate from off-shell Higgs production in proton-proton collisions. Our calculation of the $gg \to h^\ast \to Z Z \to 4 \ell$ process includes two-loop corrections to gluon-gluon-fusion Higgs production and one-loop corrections to the Higgs propagator and its decay. This article summarizes a talk given at Higgs Hunting 2014 on projections of the sensitivity of the ATLAS and CMS experiments to beyond Standard Model Higgs physics at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. We describe results on vector boson scattering, searches for additional neutral Higgs bosons in two Higgs doublet models and flavour changing neutral current top decays.

A method is proposed to directly probe the Higgs boson compositeness using the unique characteristics of a boosted Higgs boson produced in association with a weak gauge boson ($W^{\pm},Z$). We observe a generic connection between LHC Higgs data and electroweak baryogenesis: the particle that contributes to the CP odd $hgg$ or $h γγ$ vertex would provide the CP violating source during a first order phase transition. It is illustrated in the 2HDM that a common complex phase controls the lightest Higgs properties at the LHC, electric dipole moments and the CP violating source for electroweak baryogenesis. We show that combining a direct measurement of the Higgs total width from the H \to ZZ \to 4l lineshape with Higgs signal rate measurements allows Higgs couplings to be extracted in a model-independent way from CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. Using existing experimental studies with 30 fb-1 at one detector of the 14 TeV LHC, we show that the couplings-squared of a 190 GeV Higgs to WW, ZZ, and gg can be extracted with statistical precisions of about 10%, and a 95% confidence level upper limit on an unobserved component of the Higgs decay width of about 22% of the SM Higgs width can be se…
A review of the current experimental results on searches for Higgs bosons in models beyond the Standard Model is presented. Searches from ATLAS, CMS and LHCb use datasets from Run 1 of the LHC, including 7 and 8 TeV proton-proton collisions. Searches from CDF and D0 use the full or partial 1.96 TeV proton-anti-proton collision datasets from the Tevatron.

In this note we give interim recommendations on how to evaluate LHC cross sections for (neutral) Higgs production and Higgs branching ratios in the general (CP-conserving) Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM). The current status of available higher-order corrections to Higgs production and decay in this model is discussed, and the existing public codes implementing these calculations are described. Numerical results are presented for a set of reference scenarios, demonstrating the very good agreement between the results obtained using different programs.
We comment on the Standard Model Higgs boson evidence from LHC. We propose that the new resonance at 125 GeV could be interpreted as a pseudoscalar meson with quantum number $J^{PC} = 0^{- +}$. We show that this pseudoscalar could mimic the decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson in all channels with the exception of the decay into two leptons that is strongly suppressed due to charge-conjugation invariance.
Now that a Higgs boson has been discovered at the LHC, measuring its couplings to other particles is the next important step. In the Next-to-Minimal Supersymemtric Standard Model (NMSSM), one of the neutral Higgs scalars (CP-even or CP-odd) may be lighter than half of the SM-like Higgs boson. In this case, the SM-like Higgs boson h can decay into such a light scalar pair and consequently the diphoton and ZZ signal rates at the LHC will be suppressed. We show that, in the present inclusive searches for the Higgs boson at the LHC, a fermiophobic Higgs mimics the standard-model-like Higgs if its mass is around 125 GeV. For that mass the order-of-magnitude reduction of fermiophobic Higgs production cross sections is compensated by a corresponding increase in the Higgs branching fraction into $γγ$, while the $WW^*,$ $ZZ^*,$ $Zγ$ signal yields are predicted to be somewhat smaller. Motivated by the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, we investigate the possibility that a missing energy plus Higgs final state is the dominant signal channel for dark matter at the LHC. We consider examples of higher-dimension operators where a Higgs and dark matter pair are produced through an off-shell Z or photon, finding potential sensitivity at the LHC to cutoff scales of around a few hundred GeV. We have investigated the possibility of direct tests of little Higgs models incorporating triplet Higgs neutrino mass mechanism at LHC experiments. We have performed Monte Carlo studies of Drell-Yan pair production of doubly charged Higgs boson Φ^{++} followed by its leptonic decays which branching ratios are fixed from the neutrino oscillation data. We propose appropriate selection rules for the four-lepton signal, including reconstructed taus, which are optimized for the discovery of Φ^{++} with the lowest LHC luminosity. In this brief review we study the discovery potential of heavy Higgs induced single-top, same-sign top and triple-top quark productions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The context is general two Higgs doublet model where such processes can be induced by additional Yukawa couplings and sub-Tev Higgs bosons. We show that these processes can be discovered at the ongoing or future high luminosity LHC run. Discovery of these multi-top productions may shed light on the mechanism behind baryogenesis or cosmic inflation.
We consider Higgs boson pair production at the LHC in the $b \bar{b} W^+ W^-$ channel, with subsequent decay of the $W^+W^-$ pair into $\ell νj j$. Employing jet substructure and event reconstruction techniques, we show that strong evidence for this channel can be found at the 14 TeV LHC with 600 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, thus improving the current reach for the production of Higgs boson pairs. This measurement will allow to probe the trilinear Higgs boson coupling $λ$.
We present benchmark scenarios for searches for an additional Higgs state in the real Higgs singlet extension of the Standard Model in Run 2 of the LHC. The scenarios are selected such that they fulfill all relevant current theoretical and experimental constraints, but can potentially be discovered at the current LHC run. We study the Higgs boson decays and production via gluon fusion at the LHC as a probe of two typical littlest Higgs models which introduce a top quark partner with different (even and odd) T-parity to cancel the Higgs mass quadratic divergence contributed by the top quark. For each model we consider two different choices for the down-type quark Yukawa couplings. We first examine the branching ratios of the Higgs boson decays and then study the production via gluon fusion followed by the decay into two photons or two weak gauge bosons. We show that a light charged Higgs boson signal via $τ^\pmν$ decay can be established at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) also in the case of single top production. This process complements searches for the same signal in the case of charged Higgs bosons emerging from $t \bar t$ production. The models accessible include the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) as well a variety of 2-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs). High energies and luminosities are however required, thereby restricting interest on this mode to the case of the LHC running at 14 TeV with design configuration.

We address the potential of measurements with boosted single-top final states at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and possible future hadron colliders: the high-energy LHC (HE-LHC), and the future circular collider (FCC). As new physics examples to assess the potential, we consider the search for $tbW$ anomalous couplings and for a weakly-coupled $W'$ boson. The FCC would improve by a factor of two the sensitivity to anomalous couplings of the HL-LHC. For $W'$ bosons, the FCC is sensitive to $W'$ couplings $2-5$ times smaller than the HL-LHC in the mass range 2-4 TeV, and to masses up to 30 Te…
Searches for a heavy Standard Model Higgs boson focus on the 'gold plated mode' where the Higgs decays to two leptonic Z bosons. This channel provides a clean signature, in spite of the small leptonic branching ratios. We show that using fat jets the semi-leptonic ZZ mode significantly increases the number of signal events with a similar statistical significance as the leptonic mode.

Measuring the triple Higgs coupling is a crucial task in the LHC and future collider experiments. We apply the Message Passing Neural Network (MPNN) to the study of the non-resonant Higgs pair production process $pp \to hh$ in the final state with $2b + 2\ell + E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$ at the LHC. Although the MPNN can improve the signal significance, it is still challenging to observe such a process at the LHC. Higgs boson self-interactions can be investigated via di-Higgs ($pp\to hh+X$) production at the LHC. It is expected that the LHC will soon discover the Higgs boson, or that failure to find it will severely constrain its production cross-section over a large mass range. We discuss NMSSM scenarios in which the lightest Higgs boson $h_1$ is consistent with the small LEP excess at about 98 GeV in $e^+e^- \to Zh$ with $h\to b\anti b$ and the heavier Higgs boson $h_2$ has the primary features of the LHC Higgs-like signals at 125 GeV, including an enhanced $γγ$ rate. Verification or falsification of the 98 GeV $h_1$ may be possible at the LHC during the 14 TeV run. The detection of the other NMSSM Higgs bosons at the LHC and future colliders is also discussed, as well as dark matter properties of the scenario under consideration.
Interpretations of Higgs searches critically involve production cross sections and decay probabilities for different analysis channels. Mixing effects can reduce production rates, while invisible decays can reduce decay probabilities. The scenario of multi-sector SUSY breaking predicts pseudo-goldstinos which are not absorbed by the gravitino and their mass can be as low as ${{\cal O} (0.1)}$ GeV. Since the interactions of pseudo-goldstinos are not so weak as gravitino, a produced higgsino can decay to a pseudo-goldstino plus a Higgs boson insider the detector at the LHC, and thus the higgsino pair production can lead to the signal of Higgs pair plus missing energy. The main production mode for a light charged Higgs boson at the LHC is $pp \to t \bar t$, with one the top-quarks decaying to a charged Higgs and a $b$-quark. The tau tau decay mode --- supplemented by gamma gamma --- provides a highly significant signal for at least one of the CP even Higgs bosons at the LHC with reasonable luminosity. The accessible parameter space covers the entire physical range which will be left unexplored by LEP2.
The question of naturalness of the Standard Model (SM) has been a hot topic since the discovery that the Higgs boson has a relatively light mass. It has been pointed out in the past that the mass of a scalar boson can be destabilized by loop corrections. Many theories have been proposed beyond the SM to address this problem. We identify two types of well-motivated, so-far experimentally unexplored LHC signatures of extended Higgs sectors: First, Higgs-to-Higgs decay signatures that involve (at least) two Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) neutral scalar bosons, $ϕ_i \to ϕ_j ϕ_k$. These signatures are discussed in the framework of the Two-Real-Singlet-Model (TRSM), which can furthermore exhibit cascades of Higgs-to-Higgs decays leading to multi-Higgs final states.
