The most simple and seemingly straightforward application of the photon blockade effect, in which the transport of one photon prevents the transport of others, would be to separate two incoming indistinguishable photons to different output ports. We show that time-energy uncertainty relations inherently prevent this ideal situation when the blockade is implemented by a two-level system. The fundamental nature of this limit is revealed in the fact that photon blockade in the strong coupling regime of cavity QED, resulting from the nonlinearity of the Jaynes-Cummings energy level structure, exhibits efficiency and temporal behavior identical to those of photon blockade in the bad cavity regime, where the underlying nonlinearity is that of the atom itself. We demonstrate that this limit can be exceeded, yet not avoided, by exploiting time-energy entanglement between the incident photons. Finally, we show how this limit can be circumvented completely by using a three-level atom coupled to a single-sided cavity, enabling an ideal and robust photon routing mechanism.
A strong photon-photon nonlinear interaction is a necessary condition for photon blockade. Moreover, this nonlinearity can also result a bistable behavior in the cavity field. We analyze the relation between detecting field and photon blockade in a superconducting circuit QED system, and show that photon blockade cannot occur when the detecting field is in the bistable regime. This photon blockade is the microwave-photonics analog of the Coulomb blockade. We further demonstrate that the photon transmission through such system can be controlled (from photon blockade to transparency) by the dete…
We theoretically investigate the three-photon blockade phenomenon in a two atoms cavity QED system, where two atoms are driven by a coherent field. In the case of in-phase radiations, we show that the three-photon blockade with bunched two photons can be realized in a small regime of the driving field Rabi frequency. However, in the case of out-of-phase radiations, the one-photon excitations are prohibited due to the destructive interference, and three-photon blockade can be realized in a wide regime of driving field Rabi frequency. In addition, the three-photon blockade phenomenon can be sign…
We theoretically study a quantum destructive interference (QDI) induced photon blockade in a two-qubit driven cavity QED system with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). In the absence of dipole-dipole interaction, we show that a QDI-induced photon blockade can be achieved only when the qubit resonance frequency is different from the cavity mode frequency. When DDI is introduced the condition for this photon blockade is strongly dependent upon the pump field frequency, and yet is insensitive to the qubit-cavity coupling strength. Using this tunability feature we show that the conventional energy-l…
We theoretically study the quantum interference induced photon blockade phenomenon in atom cavity QED system, where the destructive interference between two different transition pathways prohibits the two-photon excitation. Here, we first explore the single atom cavity QED system via an atom or cavity drive. We show that the cavity-driven case will lead to the quantum interference induced photon blockade under a specific condition, but the atom driven case can't result in such interference induced photon blockade. Then, we investigate the two atoms case, and find that an additional transition …
We observe the unconventional photon blockade effect in quantum dot cavity QED, which, in contrast to conventional photon blockade, operates in the weak coupling regime. A single quantum dot transition is simultaneously coupled to two orthogonally polarized optical cavity modes, and by careful tuning of the input and output state of polarization, the unconventional photon blockade effect is observed. We find a minimum second-order correlation $g^{(2)}(0)\approx0.37$ which corresponds to $g^{(2)}(0)\approx0.005$ when corrected for detector jitter, and observe the expected polarization dependenc…
We present a study of manipulating the multiphoton blockade phenomenon in a single mode cavity with two ladder-type three-level atoms. Combining the cavity QED with electromagnetically induced transparency technique, we show that it is possible to actively manipulate the photon blockade when two atoms are in phase radiations. As a result, the two-photon blockade can be changed to three-photon blockade by changing the control field Rabi frequency. In the case of out-phase radiations, we show that the three-photon blockade can be improved with enhanced mean photon number. In addition, we show th…
Photon blockade is a dynamical quantum-nonlinear effect that occurs in driven systems with an anharmonic excitation ladder. For a single atom strongly coupled to an optical cavity, we show that driving the atom gives a decisively larger optical nonlinearity than driving the cavity. This enhances single-photon blockade and allows for the implementation of two-photon blockade where the absorption of two photons suppresses the absorption of further photons. As a signature, we report on three-photon antibunching with simultaneous two-photon bunching observed in the light emitted from the cavity. O…
We use the scattering matrix formalism to analyze photon blockade in coherently-driven CQED systems with a weak drive. By approximating the weak coherent drive by an input single- and two-photon Fock state, we reduce the computational complexity of the transmission and the two-photon correlation function from exponential to polynomial in the number of emitters. This enables us to easily analyze cavity-based systems containing $\sim$50 quantum emitters with modest computational resources. Using this approach we study the coherence statistics of polaritonic photon blockade while increasing the n…
We propose how to achieve strong photon antibunching effect in a cavity-QED system coupled with two Rydberg-Rydberg interaction atoms. Via calculating the equal time second order correlation function g(2)(0), we find that the unconventional photon blockade and the conventional photon blockade appear in the atom-driven scheme, and they are both significantly affected by the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction. We also find that under appropriate parameters, the photon antibunching and the mean photon number can be significantly enhanced by combining the conventional photon blockade and the unconvention…
Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), wherein a quantum emitter is coupled to electromagnetic cavity modes, is a powerful platform for implementing quantum sensors, memories, and networks. However, due to the fundamental tradeoff between gate fidelity and execution time, as well as limited scalability, the use of cavity-QED for quantum computation was overtaken by other architectures. Here, we introduce a new element into cavity-QED - a free charged particle, acting as a flying qubit. Using free electrons as a specific example, we demonstrate that our approach enables ultrafast, deterministic …
The driven-damped Jaynes-Cummings model in the regime of strong coupling is found to exhibit a coexistence between the quantum photon blockaded state and a quasi-coherent bright state. We characterize the slow time scales and the basin of attraction of these metastable states using full quantum simulations. This form of bistability can be useful for implementing a qubit readout scheme that does not require additional circuit elements. We propose a coherent control sequence that makes use of a simple linear chirp of drive amplitude and frequency as well as qubit frequency. By optimizing the par…
We introduce a scheme for perfect routing of quantum states and entanglement in regular cavity QED networks. The couplings between the cavities are quasi-uniform and each cavity is doped with a two-level atom. Quasi-uniform couplings leads the system to evolve in invariant subspaces. Combination the evolutions of the system in its invariant subspaces with quite simple local operations on atoms in the networks, gives the perfect routing of quantum states and entanglement through the network. To provide the protocol be robust due to decoherence arisen from photon loss, the field mode of the cavi…
We investigate theoretically the model of a cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (QED) system that consists of two two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity in the weak coupling regime, where the system is driven by quantum light. The dynamics behavior of the entire system is tackled in the framework of a cascaded quantum system. We find that the two-photon blockade with two-photon bunching and three-photon antibunching can be obtained even when the strong system dissipation is included. This result shows that our work has potential for realizing entangled photon pairs in a weakly coupled cavi…
There is generally no obvious evidence in any direct relation between photon blockade and atomic coherence. Here instead of only illustrating the photon statistics, we show an interesting relation between the steady-state photon blockade and the atomic coherence by designing a weakly driven cavity QED system with a two-level atom trapped. It is shown for the first time that the maximal atomic coherence has a perfect correspondence with the optimal photon blockade. The negative effects of the strong dissipations on photon statistics, atomic coherence and their correspondence are also addressed.…
Manipulating photons is an essential technique in quantum communication and computation. Combining the Raman electromagnetically induced transparency technology, we show that the photon blockade behavior can be actively controlled by using an external control field in a two atoms cavity-QED system. As a result, a versatile photon gateway can be achieved in this system, which changes the cavity photons from classical to quantum property and allows one photon, two photon and classical field leaking from the cavity. The proposal presented here has many potential applications for quantum informati…
We examine the routing scheme of single photons in a one-dimensional periodic chain of two-level quantum emitters (QEs) strongly coupled to two waveguides in a ladder configuration. It is known that for a single-emitter chiral waveguide ladder setting, photons can be redirected from one waveguide to another with a $100\%$ probability (deterministically) provided the resonance condition is met and spontaneous emission is completely ignored. However, when the spontaneous emission is included the routing scheme becomes considerably imperfect. In this paper, we present a solution to this issue by …
Quantum nonreciprocal devices have received extensive attention in recent years because they can be used to realize unidirectional quantum routing and noise isolation. In this work, we show that the shift of resonance frequencies of propagating phonons induced by spin-orbit interactions (SOI) of phonons in a rotating acoustic ring cavity can be used to realize nonreciprocal phonon blockade. When driving the cavity from different directions, nonreciprocal single-, two-phonon blockade and phonon-induced tunneling can take place by varying the parameters of the system to an appropriate value. To …
Photon-photon interactions are an essential requirement of quantum photonic information processing. One way to generate these interactions is to utilize an atom strongly coupled to an optical cavity. This system exhibits the photon blockade effect which enables single photon switching and creation of non-classical light. But the nonlinear effects enabled by this system suffer from a fundamental time-bandwidth constraint. For the the simple case of splitting an input pulse of two indistinguishable photons, this constraint imposes a limit on the efficiency of routing photons to different output …

We study the quantum interference between different weak signals in a three-port optomechanical system, which is achieved by coupling three cavity modes to the same mechanical mode. If one cavity serves as a control port and is perturbed continually by a control signal, nonreciprocal quantum interference can be observed when another signal is injected upon different target ports. In particular, we exhibit frequency-independent perfect blockade induced by the completely destructive interference over the full frequency domain. Moreover, coherent photon routing can be realized by perturbing all p…
In this chapter, we present the state-of-the-art in the generation of nonclassical states of light using semiconductor cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) platforms. Our focus is on the photon blockade effects that enable the generation of indistinguishable photon streams with high purity and efficiency. Starting with the leading platform of InGaAs quantum dots in optical nanocavities, we review the physics of a single quantum emitter strongly coupled to a cavity. Furthermore, we propose a complete model for photon blockade and tunneling in III-V quantum dot cavity QED systems. Turning toward…
The dipole blockade phenomenon is a direct consequence of strong dipole-dipole interaction, where only single atom can be excited because the doubly excited state is shifted out of resonance. The corresponding two-body entanglement with non-zero concurrence induced by the dipole blockade effect is an important resource for quantum information processing. Here, we propose a novel physical mechanism for realizing dipole blockade without the dipole-dipole interaction, where two qubits coupled to a cavity, are driven by a coherent field. By suitably chosen placements of the qubits in the cavity an…
We present a study of the electromagnetic control of nonclassicality of the outgoing light field in a single atom cavity QED system. By exploring the energy eigenvalues and eigenstates, we show that the eigenstates are similar to the Jaynes-Cummings ladder of eigenstates and can be optically controlled by an external control field. Tuning the control field frequency to the one photon resonance, we show the superbunching behavior in the outgoing light field can be observed at the frequency of one photon resonance. We also show that there exists a magic control field intensity at which two photo…

We investigate the single-photon blockade (1PB) in the quasichiral regime of atom-photon interaction that mediates via dissipative environment, where the effective atom-photon interaction is asymmetrical but achiral. The synthetic magnetic current in the closed-loop coupling breaks down the reciprocity of atom-photon interaction, resulting in an asymmetrical and even completely unidirectional effective coupling between two selected quantum states. As an example, we couple the single-atom cavity-QED (cQED) system to a strongly dissipative auxiliary cavity. We find that in the quasichiral regime…
We consider the single photon transistor in coupled cavity system of resonators interacting with multilevel superconducting artificial atom simultaneously. Effective single mode transformation is used for the diagonalization of the the hamiltonian and impedance matching in terms of the normal modes. Storage and transmission of the incident field are described by the interactions between the cavities controlling the atomic transitions of lowest lying states. Rabi splitting of vacuum induced multiphoton transitions is considered in input/output relations by the quadrature operators in the absenc…
Cavity quantum electrodynamic schemes for quantum gates are amongst the earliest quantum computing proposals. Despite continued progress, and the dramatic recent demonstration of photon blockade, there are still issues with optimal coupling and gate operation involving high-quality cavities. Here we show dynamic control techniques that allow scalable cavity-QED based quantum gates, that use the full bandwidth of the cavities. When applied to quantum gates, these techniques allow an order of magnitude increase in operating speed, and two orders of magnitude reduction in cavity Q, over passive c…

Non-equilibrium phase transitions exist in damped-driven open quantum systems, when the continuous tuning of an external parameter leads to a transition between two robust steady states. In second-order transitions this change is abrupt at a critical point, whereas in first-order transitions the two phases can co-exist in a critical hysteresis domain. Here we report the observation of a first-order dissipative quantum phase transition in a driven circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. It takes place when the photon blockade of the driven cavity-atom system is broken by increasing the dr…
We study the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a high-finesse cavity. In the large-detuning regime, it is found that the virtual photon exchange can induce a long-range interaction between atoms, which results in correlated excitations. In particular, the atomic blockade phenomenon occurs when the induced long-range interaction effectively suppresses the double atomic excitation, when the average photon number takes certain values, which makes the two nearest energy levels degenerate. We also show that quantum phase transitions occur in t…
The strong-coupling regime of cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (cQED) represents light-matter interaction at the fully quantum level. Adding a single photon shifts the resonance frequencies, a profound nonlinearity. cQED is a test-bed of quantum optics and the basis of photon-photon and atom-atom entangling gates. At microwave frequencies, success in cQED has had a transformative effect. At optical frequencies, the gates are potentially much faster and the photons can propagate over long distances and be easily detected, ideal features for quantum networks. Following pioneering work on single at…
We study the properties of an array of QED-cavities coupled by nonlinear elements in the presence of photon leakage and driven by a coherent source. The main effect of the nonlinear couplings is to provide an effective cross-Kerr interaction between nearest-neighbor cavities. Additionally, correlated photon hopping between neighboring cavities arises. We provide a detailed mean-field analysis of the steady-state phase diagram as a function of the system parameters, the leakage, and the external driving, and show the emergence of a number of different quantum phases. A photon crystal associated…
We demonstrate our simple strategy for renormalization with QED at one-loop level, basing on an elaboration of the effective field theory philosophy. No artificial regularization or deformation of the original theory is introduced here and hence no manipulation of infinities, ambiguities arise instead of infinities. Ward identities first come to reduce the number of ambiguities, the residual ones could in principle be removed by imposing physical boundary conditions. Renormalization group equations arise as "decoupling theorems" in the underlying theory perspective. In addition, a technical th…
We demonstrate experimentally the creation and measurement of an entangled state between a microscopic two level system and a macroscopic superconducting resonator where their indirect interaction is mediated by an artificial atom, a superconducting persistent current qubit (PCQB). We show that the microscopic two level system, formed by a defect in an oxide layer, exhibits an order of magnitude longer dephasing time than the PCQB, while the dephasing time of the entangled states between the microscopic two level system and macroscopic superconducting resonator is significantly longer than the…
We introduce and study the properties of an array of QED cavities coupled by nonlinear elements, in the presence of photon leakage and driven by a coherent source. The nonlinear couplings lead to photon hopping and to nearest-neighbor Kerr terms. By tuning the system parameters, the steady state of the array can exhibit a photon crystal associated with a periodic modulation of the photon blockade. In some cases, the crystalline ordering may coexist with phase synchronization. The class of cavity arrays we consider can be built with superconducting circuits of existing technology.
The photon blockade breakdown in a continuously driven cavity QED system has been proposed as a prime example for a first-order driven-dissipative quantum phase transition. But the predicted scaling from a microscopic system - dominated by quantum fluctuations - to a macroscopic one - characterized by stable phases - and the associated exponents and phase diagram have not been observed so far. In this work we couple a single transmon qubit with a fixed coupling strength $g$ to an in-situ bandwidth $κ$ tuneable superconducting cavity to controllably approach this thermodynamic limit. Even thoug…
