In this work we are interested to studying the Kondo effect present in a system with a $T$-shape ligation between a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) and a magnetic impurity. The system has been studied under hydrostatic pressure and it was observed the opening of the gap in the density of states of the zigzag metallic tube. The pressure can be modeled by the Pierls instability and in this work we consider the out-of-plane distortion. A tight-binding approximation is used to calculate the SWNT Green's functions with hydrostatic pressure applied. We studied the disappearance of the Kondo peak as the gap opens. Moreover, we observed the strong influence of the pressure in the conductance curve that can be explained by the variation of Kondo peak height. The Kondo effect was reproduced with the atomic approach with $U\rightarrow\infty$ developed previously. Results of the electronic density of states and curves of the conductance are presented.
We study the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson model with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method. We discuss some delicate aspects of the transformation from this model to the Bose-Fermi Kondo model. We show that the CT-QMC method can be used at sufficiently low temperatures to access the quantum critical properties of these models.
The variant of the single-impurity Kondo problem in which the conduction-band density of states has a power-law pseudogap at the Fermi energy is known to exhibit a zero-temperature phase transition at a finite exchange coupling. The critical properties of this transition are studied both for N=2 and for N>>1, where N is the spin degeneracy. The critical exponents are consistent with a simple scaling form for the free energy. For any finite N, the temperature exponent of the local spin susceptibility at the critical Kondo coupling varies continuously with the power of the pseudogap. This raises…
We study the pseudogap Anderson model as a prototype system for critical Kondo destruction. We obtain finite-temperature (T) scaling functions near its quantum critical point, using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method and also considering a dynamical large-N limit. We are able to determine the behavior of the scaling functions in the typically-difficult-to-access quantum-relaxational regime (hbar w < k_B T), and conclude that the relaxation rates for both the spin and single-particle excitations are linear in temperature. We discuss the implications of these results for the quantum cr…
We theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium quantum phase transition in a generic setup: the pseudogap Kondo model where a quantum dot couples to two-left (L) and right (R)-voltage-biased fermionic leads with power-law density of states (DOS) with respect to their Fermi levels μ_L/R, ρ_c,L(R) (ω) \propto |ω - μ_L(R) |r, and 0 < r < 1. In equilibrium (zero bias voltage) and for 0 < r < 1/2, with increasing Kondo correlations, in the presence of particle-hole symmetry this model exhibits a quantum phase transition from a unscreened local moment (LM) phase to the Kondo phase. Via a controlle…
Experiments in heavy-fermion metals and related theoretical work suggest that critical local-moment fluctuations can play an important role near a zero-temperature phase transition. We study such fluctuations at the quantum critical point of a Kondo impurity model in which the density of band states vanishes as |E|^r at the Fermi energy (E = 0). The local spin response is described by a set of critical exponents that vary continuously with r. For 0 < r < 1, the dynamical susceptibility exhibits omega/T scaling with a fractional exponent, implying that the critical point is interacting.
We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like |ε|^r at the Fermi energy (ε=0) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to |ω|^s. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time qu…
We study a generalization of the Kondo model in which the impurity spin is represented by Abrikosov fermions in a rotation group SU(P) larger than the SU(N) group associated to the spin of the conduction electrons, thereby forcing the single electronic bath to underscreen the localized moment. We demonstrate how to formulate a controlled large N limit preserving the property of underscreening, and which can be seen as a ``dual'' theory of the multichannel large N equations usually associated to overscreening. Due to the anomalous scattering on the uncompensated degrees of freedom, the Fermi li…
Magnetic impurities coupled to both fermionic and bosonic baths or to a fermionic bath with pseudogap density of states, described by the Fermi-Bose Kondo and pseudogap Kondo models, display non-trivial intermediate coupling fixed points associated with critical local-moment fluctuations and local non-Fermi liquid behavior. Based on renormalization group together with a renormalized perturbation expansion around the free-impurity limit, we calculate various impurity properties in the vicinity of those intermediate-coupling fixed points. In particular, we compute the conduction electron T matri…
We use the poor man's scaling approach to study the phase boundaries of a pair of quantum impurity models featuring a power-law density of states $ρ(ω)\propto|ω|^r$ that gives rise to quantum phase transitions between local-moment and Kondo-screened phases. For the Anderson model with a pseudogap (i.e., $r>0$), we find the phase boundary for (a) $0<r<1/2$, a range over which the model exhibits interacting quantum critical points both at and away from particle-hole symmetry, and (b) $r>1$, where the phases are separated by first-order quantum phase transitions. For the particle-hole-symmetric K…
The "states-non-conserving" fermion density of states (DOS), deduced from the specific heat of hole-doped cuprates, could arise from a Kondo or heavy fermion-like DOS being suppressed by anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The large Fermi surface predicted by band theory and observed experimentally, is still expected for zero pseudogap, but with an effective mass corresponding to a Kondo temperature ~ 800 K. A finite pseudogap could divide it into Fermi arcs. Theoretical results for the asymmetric Anderson model can account for the experimental Wilson ratio.
We discuss the two-channel Kondo problem with a pseudogap density of states, $ρ(\w)\propto|\w|^r$, of the bath fermions. Combining both analytical and numerical renormalization group techniques, we characterize the impurity phases and quantum phase transitions of the relevant Kondo and Anderson models. The line of stable points, corresponding to the overscreened non-Fermi liquid behavior of the metallic $r=0$ case, is replaced by a stable particle-hole symmetric intermediate-coupling fixed point for $0<r<\rmax\approx0.23$. For $r>\rmax$, this non-Fermi liquid phase disappears, and instead a cr…
We study the behavior of the entropy of the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Kondo model within a dynamical large-$N$ limit, where $N$ is related to the symmetry group of the model. This model is a general quantum impurity model that describes a localized level coupled to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes in a powerlaw fashion near the Fermi energy and to a bosonic bath possessing a powerlaw spectral density below a cutoff energy. As a function of the couplings to the baths various quantum phase transitions can occur. We study how the impurity entropy changes across these zero-temp…
We consider charge fluctuations in a quantum dot coupled to an interacting one-dimensional electron liquid. We find the behavior of this system to be similar to the multichannel pseudogap Kondo model. By tuning the coupling between the dot and the one-dimensional electron liquid, one can access the quantum critical point and the various fixed points which arise. The differential capacitance is computed and is shown to contain detailed information about the system.
We study two quantum dots embedded in the arms of an Aharonov-Bohm ring threaded by a magnetic flux. The system can be described by an effective one-impurity Anderson model with an energy- and flux-dependent density of states. For specific values of the flux, this density of states vanishes at the Fermi energy, yielding a controlled realization of the pseudogap Kondo effect. The conductance and transmission phase shifts reflect a nontrivial interplay between wave interference and interactions, providing clear signatures of quantum phase transitions between Kondo and non-Kondo ground states.
We discuss quantum phase transitions in the pseudogap Kondo problem, which describes a magnetic moment coupled to conduction electrons with a power-law density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r. We show that different perturbative expansions, together with renormalization group techniques, provide effective low-energy field theories for the relevant critical fixed points. In particular, we review expansions near the lower-critical and upper-critical dimensions of the problem, being r=0 and r=1, respectively.
We consider a magnetic impurity coupled to both fermionic quasiparticles with a pseudogap density of states and bosonic spin fluctuations. Using renormalization group and large-N calculations we investigate the phase diagram of the resulting Fermi-Bose Kondo model. We show that the Kondo temperature is strongly reduced by low-energy spin fluctuations, and make connections to experiments in cuprate superconductors. Furthermore we derive an exact exponent for the critical behavior of the conduction electron T matrix, and propose our findings to be relevant for certain scenarios of local quantum …
Impurity moments coupled to fermions with a pseudogap density of states display a quantum phase transition between a screened and a free moment phase upon variation of the Kondo coupling. We describe the universal theory of this transition for the experimentally relevant case of particle-hole asymmetry. The theory takes the form of a crossing between effective singlet and doublet levels, interacting with low-energy fermions. Depending on the pseudogap exponent, this interaction is either relevant or irrelevant under renormalization group transformations, establishing the existence of an upper-…
For the last decade, tunable quantum dot systems have allowed the investigation of Kondo physics wherein the quenching of a single spin on an artificial atom affects the conductance. The pseudogap Kondo model featuring a density of states $ρ(ε)$ = C$|ε|^{r}$, introduced by Withoff and Fradkin in 1990 was predicted to exhibit Kondo-like physics above a critical value of the Kondo coupling, J$_c$, which several groups have shown by numerical renormalization group (RG) is finite for r$< {1/2}$. Gonzalez-Buxton {\it{et al}} showed that the strong coupling limit of the particle-hole symmetric model…
One of the great achievements performed by Jacques Friedel in France has been to promote experimental activities on the electronic properties in condensed matter physics, which has led him, among others, to be an active promoter of the up-rise of the "Laboratoire de Physique des Solides" (LPS). A selective presentation of some of the work achieved in my Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) group allows me to underline the importance of the initial choices done by J. Friedel for the LPS. I give here an updated review of the work done on Kondo effect in the 1970's which has allowed me to enlighten t…
We discuss a multichannel SU(N) Kondo model which displays non-trivial zero-temperature phase transitions due to a conduction electron density of states vanishing with a power law at the Fermi level. In a particular large-N limit, the system is described by coupled integral equations corresponding to a dynamic saddle point. We exactly determine the universal low-energy behavior of spectral densities at the scale-invariant fixed points, obtain anomalous exponents, and compute scaling functions describing the crossover near the quantum-critical points. We argue that our findings are relevant to …
The pseudogap Anderson impurity model is a paradigm for locally critical quantum phase transitions. Within the framework of the local moment approach we study its finite-T dynamics, as embodied in the single-particle spectrum, in the vicinity of the symmetric quantum critical point (QCP) separating generalized Fermi-liquid (Kondo screened) and local moment phases. The scaling spectra in both phases, and at the QCP itself, are obtained analytically. A key result is that pure omega/T-scaling obtains at the QCP, where the Kondo resonance has just collapsed. The connection between the scaling spec…
The Anderson model of an $s$-wave single-orbital correlated impurity placed on a noninteracting honeycomb lattice, a simplified model for studying an impurity on graphene, is used to investigate pseudogap Kondo problem. In this model, there are two quantum phases: the phase of free impurity local moment and the Kondo phase where this local moment is fully screened. The transition between these two phases is under investigation. The work focuses mostly on the case where the impurity is placed on top of a lattice site. In this case, the full phase diagram is constructed using three parameters: t…
We investigate the transport properties of a (small) quantum dot connected to Fermi liquid leads with a power-law density of states (DOS). Such a system, if experimentally realizable, will have interesting physical properties including: (i) non-saturating Coulomb blockade peak widths; (ii) a non-unitary Kondo peak symmetrically placed between the Coulomb blockade peaks; (iii) an absence of conductance away from particle-hole symmetry at sufficiently low temperatures; and (iv) evidence of a quantum critical point as a function of dot-lead hopping. These properties are compared and contrasted wi…
The pseudogap Kondo problem, describing a magnetic impurity embedded in an electronic environment with a power-law density of states, displays continuous quantum phase transitions between free and screened moment phases. In this paper we employ renormalization group techniques to analytically calculate universal crossover functions, associated to these transitions, for various observables. Quantitative agreement with the results of Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) simulations is obtained for temperature-dependent static and zero-temperature dynamic quantities, at and away from criticality…
The pseudogap Kondo problem, describing quantum impurities coupled to fermionic quasiparticles with a pseudogap density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r, shows a rich zero-temperature phase diagram, with different screened and free moment phases and associated transitions. We analyze both the particle-hole symmetric and asymmetric cases using renormalization group techniques. In the vicinity of r=0, which plays the role of a lower-critical dimension, an expansion in the Kondo coupling is appropriate. In contrast, r=1 is the upper-critical dimension in the absence of particle-hole symmetry, an…
We studied the evolution of the electronic structure across the quantum critical point in V doped Cr employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results exhibit signatures of pseudogap and orbital Kondo resonance peak at low temperatures for all the compositions studied suggesting a scenario of spin density wave quantum criticality corresponding to orbital Kondo effect. The pseudogap and the Kondo peak gradually reduces with V doping but remains finite at the quantum critical point indicating their relevance in widely discussed quantum phases in correlated electron syste…
The Anderson impurity model with a density of states $ρ(\varepsilon) \propto |\varepsilon|^r$ containing a power-law pseudogap centered on the Fermi energy ($\varepsilon = 0$) features for $0<r<1$ a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point (QCP) separating Kondo-screened and local-moment phases. The observation of mixed valency in quantum critical $β$-YbAlB$_4$ has prompted study of this model away from particle-hole symmetry. The critical spin response associated with all Kondo destruction QCPs has been shown to be accompanied, for $r=0.6$ and noninteger occupation of the impurity site, by a …
Numerical Renormalization Group simulations have shown that the underscreened spin-1 Kondo impurity model with power-law bath density of states (DOS) $ρ(\w) \propto |\w|^r$ possesses various intermediate-coupling fixed points, including a stable non-Fermi liquid phase. In this paper we discuss the corresponding universal low-energy theories, obtain thermodynamic quantities and critical exponents by renormalization group analysis together with suitable $ε$-expansions, and compare our results with numerical data. Whereas the particle-hole symmetric critical point can be controlled at weak coupli…
Magnetic impurities in three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl systems are shown to exhibit a fascinatingly diverse range of Kondo physics, with distinctive experimental spectroscopic signatures. When the Fermi level is precisely at the Dirac point, Dirac semimetals are in fact unlikely candidates for a Kondo effect due to the pseudogapped density of states. However, the influence of a nearby quantum critical point leads to the unconventional evolution of Kondo physics for even tiny deviations in the chemical potential. Separating the degenerate Dirac nodes produces a Weyl phase: time-reversal symmet…
Although the single-impurity Kondo physics has already been well understood, the understanding of the Kondo lattice problem where a dense array of local moments couples to the conduction electrons is still far from complete. The ability of creating and tuning the Kondo lattice in non-f-electron systems will be great helpful for further understanding the Kondo lattice behavior. Here we show that the Pb intercalation in the charge-density-wave-driven narrow-electronic-band system 1T-TaS2 induces a transition from the insulating gap to a sharp Kondo resonance in the scanning tunneling microscopy …
Magnetic impurities in neutral graphene provide a realization of the pseudogap Kondo model, which displays a quantum phase transition between phases with screened and unscreened impurity moment. Here, we present a detailed study of the pseudogap Kondo model with finite chemical potential mu. While carrier doping restores conventional Kondo screening at lowest energies, properties of the quantum critical fixed point turn out to influence the behavior over a large parameter range. Most importantly, the Kondo temperature T_K shows an extreme asymmetry between electron and hole doping. At critical…
Golden SmS is a paramagnetic, mixed-valence system with a pseudogap. With increasing pressure across a critical pressure Pc, the system undergoes a discontinuous transition into a metallic, anti-ferromagnetically ordered state. By using a combination of thermodynamic, transport, and magnetic measurements, we show that the pseudogap results from the formation of a local bound state with spin singlet. We further argue that the transition Pc is regarded as a transition from an insulating electron-hole gas to a Kondo metal, i.e., from a spatially bound state to a Kondo virtually bound state betwee…
We study the SU(4) Kondo effect in carbon nanotube quantum dots, where doubly degenerate orbitals form 4-electron ``shells''. The SU(4) Kondo behavior is investigated for one, two and three electrons in the topmost shell. While the Kondo state of two electrons is quenched by magnetic field, in case of an odd number of electrons two types of SU(2) Kondo effect may survive. Namely, the spin SU(2) state is realized in the magnetic field parallel to the nanotube (inducing primarily orbital splitting). Application of the perpendicular field (inducing Zeeman splitting) results in the orbital SU(2) K…
We introduce a new Kondo ladder model by coupling the well-known Takhtajan-Babujan S=1 chain to a half-filled one-dimensional electron gas, and we solve it using quantum field theory techniques. Through the so-called underscreened Kondo effect, this gives novel insights into low-dimensional spin liquid systems. For instance, the optical conductivity reveals only a pseudogap at $k=π$ despite of the insulating state, a coherent magnon peak in the dynamical spin susceptibility coexists with an incoherent spinon background, the magnetization yields a fractional-like quantization. More generally, t…
A detailed low-energy electronic structure of a Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ was revealed by a synergetic combination of ultrahigh-resolution laser photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and time-resolved PES. The former confirmed a 25-meV pseudogap corresponding to the Kondo temperature of this material, and more importantly, it revealed that a 15-meV gap and a Kondo-peak feature developed below a crossover temperature $T^\ast \sim 110$ K. In harmony with this, the latter discovered a very long recombination time exceeding 100 ps below $\sim$$T^\ast$. This is a clear manifestation of photoexcited car…
The origin of the partial suppression of the electronic density states in the enigmatic pseudogap behavior, which is at the core of understanding high-$T_c$ superconductivity, has been hotly contested as either a hallmark of preformed Cooper pairs or an incipient order of competing interactions nearby. Here, we report the quasi-particle scattering spectroscopy of the quantum critical superconductor CeCoIn$_5$, where a pseudogap with energy $Δ_g$ was manifested as a dip in the differential conductance ($dI/dV$) below the characteristic temperature of $T_g$. When subjected to external pressure, …
We present a novel approximation for two interacting magnetic impurities immersed into a noninteracting metallic host. The scheme is based on direct perturbation theory in the hybridization between the impurity and band electrons. This two-impurity enhanced noncrossing approximation (TIE) fully incorporates the indirect interaction between the impurities which are mediated by the conduction electrons as well as additional arbitrary direct interaction matrix elements. We qualify the approximation by investigating the uncoupled case and conclude the TIE to be equally accurate as its single impur…
The evolution of the electronic state through the reduction annealing has been investigated in electron-doped Pr_1.3-x_La_0.7_Ce_x_CuO_4+delta_ (x=0.10) single crystals with the so-called T' structure. From the ab plane and c axis electrical resistivity measurements in magnetic fields, it has been found that, through the reduction annealing, the strongly localized state of carriers accompanied by the antiferromagnetic (AF) pseudogap in the as-grown crystal changes to a metallic state bringing about the Kondo effect without AF pseudogap and to a superconducting state. These results are able to …
We study equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of the single-impurity Anderson model with a power-law pseudogap in the density of states. In equilibrium, the model is known to display a quantum phase transition from a generalized Kondo to a local moment phase. In the present work, we focus on the extension of these phases beyond equilibrium, i.e. under the influence of a bias voltage. Within the auxiliary master equation approach combined with a scheme based on matrix product states (MPS) we are able to directly address the current-carrying steady state. Starting with the equilibrium situa…
We study the transmission through a double quantum-dot system in the Kondo regime. An exact expression for the transmission coefficient in terms of fully interacting many-body Green's functions is obtained. By mapping the system into an effective Anderson impurity model, one can determine the transmission using numerical renormalization-group methods. The transmission exhibits signatures of the different Kondo regimes of the effective model, including an unusual Kondo phase with split peaks in the spectral function, as well as a pseudogapped regime exhibiting a quantum critical transition betw…
An effective model that describes the Kondo effect due to a point defect in graphene is developed, taking account of the electronic state and the lattice structure of the defect. It is shown that this model can be transformed into a single-channel pseudogap Anderson model with a finite chemical potential. On the basis of the numerical renormalization group method, it is clarified that the experimentally observed gate-voltage dependence of the Kondo temperature is understood in this framework.
The electronic structure of small Hubbard molecules coupled between two non-interacting semi-infinite leads is studied in the low bias-voltage limit. To calculate the finite-temperature Green's function of the system, each lead is simulated by a small cluster, so that the problem is reduced to that of a finite-size system comprising the molecule and clusters on both sides. The Hamiltonian parameters of the lead clusters are chosen such that their embedding potentials coincide with those of the semi-infinite leads on Matsubara frequencies. Exact diagonalization is used to evaluate the effect of…
Pseudogap is a ubiquitous phenomenon in strongly correlated systems such as high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors, ultracold atoms and nuclear physics. While pairing fluctuations inducing the pseudogap are known to be enhanced in low-dimensional systems, such effects have not been explored well in one of the most fundamental 1D models, that is, Gaudin-Yang model. In this work, we show that the pseudogap effect can be visible in the single-particle excitation in this system using a diagrammatic approach. Fermionic single-particle spectra exhibit a unique crossover from the double-particle dispersion…
We discuss the dynamics of magnetic moments in d-wave superconductors, in particular we focus on moments induced by doping non-magnetic impurities into cuprates. The interaction of such moments with the Bogoliubov quasiparticles of the superconductors can be decribed by variants of the pseudogap Kondo model, characterized by a power-law density of states at the Fermi level. The Numerical Renormalization Group technique is employed to investigate this Kondo problem for realistic band structures and particle-hole asymmetries, both at zero and finite temperatures. In particular, we study the boun…
Ferromagnetic contacts put in proximity with carbon nanotubes induce spin and orbital polarizations. These polarizations affect dramatically the Kondo correlations occurring in quantum dots formed in a carbon nanotube, inducing effective fields in both spin and orbital sectors. As a consequence, the carbon nanotube quantum dot spectral density shows a four-fold split SU(4) Kondo resonance. Furthermore, the presence of spin-orbit interactions leads to the occurrence of an additional polarization among time-reversal electronic states (polarization in the time-reversal symmetry or Kramers sector)…
We investigate the effect of unconventional density wave (UDW) condensate on an Anderson impurity using large-N technique at T=0. In accordance with previous treatments of a Kondo impurity in pseudogap phases, we find that Kondo effect occurs only in a certain range of parameters. The f-electron density of states reflects the influence of UDW at low energies and around the maximum of the density wave gap. The static spin susceptibility diverges at the critical coupling, indicating the transition from strong to weak coupling. In the dynamic spin susceptibility an additional peak appears showing…
