Overall, the two main contributions of this work include the application of sentence simplification to association extraction as described above, and the use of distributional semantics for concept extraction. The proposed work on concept extraction amalgamates for the first time two diverse research areas -distributional semantics and information extraction. In this paper, we present our work on the BioASQ pipeline. The goal is to answer four types of questions: summary, yes/no, factoids, and list. Our goal is to empirically evaluate different modules involved: the feature extractor and the sentence selection block. We used our pipeline to test the effectiveness of each module for all kinds of question types and perform error analysis. We defined metrics that are useful for future research related to the BioASQ pipeline critical to improve the performance of the training pipeline.

We present an analysis of the problem of identifying biological context and associating it with biochemical events in biomedical texts. This constitutes a non-trivial, inter-sentential relation extraction task. We focus on biological context as descriptions of the species, tissue type and cell type that are associated with biochemical events. We describe the properties of an annotated corpus of context-event relations and present and evaluate several classifiers for context-event association trained on syntactic, distance and frequency features.
