The momentum space zero-range model is used to investigate universal properties of three interacting particles confined to two dimensions. The pertinent equations are first formulated for a system of two identical and one distinct particle and the two different two-body subsystems are characterized by two-body energies and masses. The three-body energy in units of one of the two-body energies is a universal function of the other two-body energy and the mass ratio. We derive convenient analytical formulae for calculations of the three-body energy as function of these two independent parameters and exhibit the results as universal curves. In particular, we show that the three-body system can have any number of stable bound states. When the mass ratio of the distinct to identical particles is greater than 0.22 we find that at most two stable bound states exist, while for two heavy and one light mass an increasing number of bound states is possible. The specific number of stable bound states depends on the ratio of two-body bound state energies and on the mass ratio and we map out an energy-mass phase-diagram of the number of stable bound states. Realizable systems of both fermions and bosons are discussed in this framework.
We examine the problem of two particles confined in an isotropic harmonic trap, which interact via a finite-ranged Gaussian-shaped potential in two spatial dimensions. We derive an approximative transcendental equation for the energy and study the resulting spectrum as a function of the interparticle interaction strength. Both the attractive and repulsive systems are analyzed. We study the impact of the potential's range on the ground-state energy. Complementary, we also explicitly verify by a variational treatment that in the zero-range limit the positive delta potential in two dimensions onl…
The low-energy spectrum of three particles interacting via nearly resonant two-body interactions in the Efimov regime is set by the so-called three-body parameter. We show that the three-body parameter is essentially determined by the zero-energy two-body correlation. As a result, we identify two classes of two-body interactions for which the three-body parameter has a universal value in units of their effective range. One class involves the universality of the three-body parameter recently found in ultracold atom systems. The other is relevant to short-range interactions that can be found in …
Universal properties of mass-imbalanced three-body systems in 2D are studied using zero-range interactions in momentum space. The dependence of the three-particle binding energy on the parameters (masses and two-body energies) is highly non-trivial even in the simplest case of two identical particles and a distinct one. This dependence is parametrized for ground and excited states in terms of {\itshape supercircles} functions in the most general case of three distinguishable particles.
In recent years extensive theoretical and experimental studies of universal few-body physics have led to advances in our understanding of universal Efimov physics [1]. The Efimov effect, once considered a mysterious and esoteric effect, is today a reality that many experiments in ultracold quantum gases have successfully observed and continued to explore [2-14]. Whereas theory was the driving force behind our understanding of Efimov physics for decades, recent experiments have contributed an unexpected discovery. Specifically, measurements have found that the so-called three-body parameter det…
We prove that the corner angle distributions in the bound three-body system AAB, which consists of two particles of type A and one particle of type B, approach universal form if the pair AA has a virtual state at zero energy and the binding energy of AAB goes to zero. We derive explicit expressions for the universal corner angle distributions in terms of elementary functions, which depend solely on the mass ratio m(A)/m(B) and do not depend on pair interactions. On the basis of experimental data and calculations we demonstrate that such systems as the asymmetric Helium trimer $^3$He$^4$He$_2$ …
We discuss the impact of a finite effective range on three-body systems interacting through a large two-body scattering length. By employing a perturbative analysis in an effective field theory well suited to this scale hierarchy we find that an additional three-body parameter is required for consistent renormalization once range corrections are considered. This allows us to extend previously discussed universal relations between different observables in the recombination of cold atoms to account for the presence of a finite effective range. We show that such range corrections allow us to simu…
This dissertation presents theoretical investigations of universality and finite-range corrections in few- and many-boson systems. The main focus is on ultra-cold atomic gases seen both from the three-body, many-body, and mean-field perspective. Topics include corrections to Efimov physics, the N-body Efimov effect, two-body correlations in condensates and higher-order interactions in mean-field BECs.
We report on the observation of triatomic Efimov resonances in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Exploiting the wide tunability of interactions resulting from three broad Feshbach resonances in the same spin channel, we measure magnetic-field dependent three-body recombination loss. The positions of the loss resonances yield corresponding values for the three-body parameter, which in universal few-body physics is required to describe three-body phenomena and in particular to fix the spectrum of Efimov states. Our observations show a robust universal behavior with a three-body parameter that st…
The mass-imbalanced three-body recombination process that forms a shallow dimer is shown to possess a rich Efimov-Stückelberg landscape, with corresponding spectra that differ fundamentally from the homonuclear case. A semi-analytical treatment of the three-body recombination predicts an unusual spectra with intertwined resonance peaks and minima, and yields in-depth insight into the behavior of the corresponding Efimov spectra. In particular, the patterns of the Efimov-Stückelberg landscape are shown to depend inherently on the degree of diabaticity of the three-body collisions, which strongl…
We consider a system of three helium-4 atoms, which is so far the simplest realistic three-body system exhibiting the Efimov effect, in order to analyse deviations from the universal Efimov three-body spectrum. We first calculate the bound states using a realistic two-body potential, and then analyse how they can be reproduced by simple effective models beyond Efimov's universal theory. We find that the non-universal variations of the first two states can be well reproduced by models parametrized with only three quantities: the scattering length and effective range of the original potential, a…
Universal behaviour has been found inside the window of Efimov physics for systems with $N=4,5,6$ particles. Efimov physics refers to the emergence of a number of three-body states in systems of identical bosons interacting {\it via} a short-range interaction becoming infinite at the verge of binding two particles. These Efimov states display a discrete scale invariance symmetry, with the scaling factor independent of the microscopic interaction. Their energies in the limit of zero-range interaction can be parametrized, as a function of the scattering length, by a universal function. We have f…
We compute binding energies and root mean square radii for weakly bound systems of $N=4$ and $5$ identical bosons. Ground and first excited states of an $N$-body system appear below the threshold for binding the system with $N-1$ particles. Their root mean square radii approach constants in the limit of weak binding. Their probability distributions are on average located in non-classical regions of space which result in universal structures. Radii decrease with increasing particle number. The ground states for more than five particles are probably non-universal whereas excited states may be un…
In this paper we discuss the recent discovery of the universality of the three-body parameter (3BP) from Efimov physics. This new result was identified by recent experimental observations in ultracold quantum gases where the value of the s-wave scattering length, $a=a_-$, at which the first Efimov resonance is created was found to be nearly the same for a range of atomic species --- if scaled as $a_-/r_{\rm vdW}$, where $r_{\rm vdW}$ is the van der Waals length. Here, we discuss some of the physical principles related to these observations that emerge from solving the three-body problem with v…
Under certain circumstances, three or more interacting particles may form bound states. While the general few-body problem is not analytically solvable, the so-called Efimov trimers appear for a system of three particles with resonant two-body interactions. The binding energies of these trimers are predicted to be universally connected to each other, independent of the microscopic details of the interaction. By exploiting a Feshbach resonance to widely tune the interactions between trapped ultracold lithium atoms, we find evidence for two universally connected Efimov trimers and their associat…
We measure the critical scattering length for the appearance of the first three-body bound state, or Efimov three-body parameter, at seven different Feshbach resonances in ultracold 39K atoms. We study both intermediate and narrow resonances, where the three-body spectrum is expected to be determined by the non-universal coupling of two scattering channels. We observe instead approximately the same universal relation of the three-body parameter with the two-body van der Waals radius already found for broader resonances, which can be modeled with a single channel. This unexpected observation su…
We study three-body collisions within ultracold mixtures with resonant interspecies $p$-wave interactions. Our results for the three-body effective interaction strength and decay rate are crucial towards understanding the stability and lifetime of these dilute quantum fluids. On resonance, we find that a class of universal scattering pathways emerges, regardless of the details of the short-range interactions. This gives rise quite generally to a remarkable regime where three-body effective interactions dominate over both inelastic decay and two-body effective interactions. Additionally, we fin…
We perform precise studies of two- and three-body interactions near an intermediate-strength Feshbach resonance in $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ at $33.5820(14)\thinspace$G. Precise measurement of dimer binding energies, spanning three orders of magnitude, enables the construction of a complete two-body coupled-channel model for determination of the scattering lengths with an unprecedented low uncertainty. Utilizing an accurate scattering length map, we measure the precise location of the Efimov ground state to test van der Waals universality. Precise control of the sample's temperature and density ensure…
We show that the onset of quantum chaos at infinite temperature in two many-body one-dimensional lattice models, the perturbed spin-1/2 XXZ and Anderson models, is characterized by universal behavior. Specifically, we show that the onset of quantum chaos is marked by maxima of the typical fidelity susceptibilities that scale with the square of the inverse average level spacing, saturating their upper bound, and that the strength of the integrability- or localization-breaking perturbation at these maxima decreases with increasing system size. We also show that the spectral function below the ``…

Quantum chaos of many-body systems has been swiftly developing into a vibrant research area at the interface between various disciplines, ranging from statistical physics to condensed matter to quantum information and to cosmology. In quantum systems with a classical limit, advanced semiclassical methods provide the crucial link between classically chaotic dynamics and corresponding universal features at the quantum level. Recently, single-particle techniques dealing with ergodic wave interference in the usual semiclassical limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$ have begun to be transformed into the fiel…
We calculated, using seven realistic 4He-4He potentials in the literature, the Efimov spectra of the 4He trimer and tetramer and analyzed the universality of the systems. The three-(four-)body Schroedinger equations were solved fully nonadiabatically with the high-precision calculation method employed in our previous work on the 4He trimer and tetramer [Phys. Rev. A 85, 022502 (2012); 85, 062505 (2012)]. We found the following universality in the four-boson system: i) The critical scattering lengths at which the tetramer ground and excited states couple to the four-body threshold are independe…
We study the universality of the three-body parameters for systems relevant for ultracold quantum gases with positive $s$-wave two-body scattering lengths. Our results account for finite-range effects and their universality is tested by changing the number of deeply bound diatomic states supported by our interaction model. We find that the physics controlling the values of the three-body parameters associated with the ground and excited Efimov states is constrained by a variational principle and can be strongly affected by $d$-wave interactions that prevent both trimer states from merging into…
The many-body Schrödinger dynamics of a one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junction is investigated for up to ten thousand bosons and long times. The initial states are fully condensed and the interaction strength is weak. We report on a universal fragmentation dynamics on the many-body level: systems consisting of different numbers of particles fragment to the same value at constant mean-field interaction strength. The phenomenon manifests itself in observables such as the correlation functions of the system. We explain this universal fragmentation dynamics analytically based on the Bose-Hubba…
We study the semisuper-Efimov effect, which is found for four identical bosons with a resonant three-body interaction in 2D, in various systems. Based on solutions of bound-state and renormalization-group equations, we first demonstrate an emergence of the semisuper-Efimov effect in mass-imbalanced bosons in 2D. Compared with the Efimov and the super-Efimov effects, the mass ratio-dependent scaling parameter is unexpectedly found to take on a finite value even for extremely mass-imbalanced situations, where the mass ratio is 0 or $\infty$. By a renormalization-group analysis, we also show that…
We exactly calculate the full temperature dependence of Casimir-like forces appearing between two and three static impurities loaded in the ideal Bose gas below the Bose-Einstein condensation transition point. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, the calculation procedure presented here can be easily extended on a Bose system with an arbitrary number of impurities immersed.
We study the three-body scattering hypervolume $D$ of atoms whose scattering length $a$ is on the order of or smaller than the typical range $r_{\mathrm{vdW}}$ of the van der Waals attraction. We find that the real part of $D$ behaves universally in this weakly interacting regime ($|a|/r_{\mathrm{vdW}}\lesssim 1$) in the absence of trimer resonances. This universality originates from hard-spherelike collisions that dominate elastic three-body scattering. We use this result to make quantitative predictions for the thermodynamics and elementary excitations of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate i…
We revisit the properties of the two-component Fermi gas with short-range interactions in three dimensions, in the limit where the s-wave scattering length diverges. Such a unitary Fermi gas possesses universal thermodynamic and dynamical observables that are independent of any interaction length scale. Focusing on trapped systems of N fermions, where N$\leq10$, we investigate how well we can determine the zero-temperature behavior of the many-body system from published few-body data on the ground-state energy and the contact. For the unpolarized case, we find that the Bertsch parameters extra…
We report recent advances on the study of universal weakly bound four-boson states from the solutions of the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations with zero-range two-body interactions. In particular, we present the correlation between the energies of successive tetramers between two neighbor Efimov trimers and compare it to recent finite range potential model calculations. We provide further results on the large momentum structure of the tetramer wave function, where the four-body scale, introduced in the regularization procedure of the bound state equations in momentum space, is clearly manifested. T…
We study the influence of atomic interactions on quantum simulations in momentum-space lattices (MSLs), where driven transitions between discrete momentum states mimic transport between sites of a synthetic lattice. Low energy atomic collisions, which are short ranged in real space, relate to nearly infinite-ranged interactions in momentum space. However, the added exchange energy between atoms in distinguishable momentum states leads to an effectively attractive, finite-ranged interaction in momentum space. In this work, we observe the onset of self-trapping driven by such interactions in a m…
It is now possible to study experimentally the combined effect of disorder and interactions in cold atom physics. Motivated by these developments we investigate the dynamics around the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas with short-range interactions in a quasiperiodic potential by the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) technique. By tuning disorder and interactions we study the MIT from the weakly to the strongly interacting limit. The MIT is not universal as time evolution, well described by a process of anomalous diffusion, depends q…
Efimov physics is a universal phenomenon arising in quantum three-body systems. For systems with resonant two-body interactions, Efimov predicted an infinite series of three-body bound states with geometric scaling symmetry. These Efimov states were first observed in cold Cs atoms and have since been reported in a variety of atomic systems. While theories predict non-universal behavior for narrow Feshbach resonances, experiments on Efimov resonances are so far consistent with predictions based on universal theories. Here we directly compare the Efimov spectra in a $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture nea…

A universal relationship between scaled size and scaled energy is explored in five-body self-bound quantum systems. The ground-state binding energy and structure properties are obtained by means of the diffusion Monte Carlo method. We use pure estimators to eliminate any residual bias in the estimation of the cluster size. Strengthening the inter-particle interaction, we extend the exploration from the halo region to classical systems. Universal scaled size-scaled energy line, which does not depend on the short-range potential details and binding strength, is found for homogeneous pentamers wi…
Recent measurements of Efimov resonances in a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We find an Efimov-like resonance in the rate of inelastic collisions between $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms. However, we do not observe any Efimov-related res…
We treat small trapped unequal-mass two-component Fermi gases at unitarity within a non-perturbative microscopic framework and investigate the system properties as functions of the mass ratio $κ$, and the numbers $N_{1}$ and $N_2$ of heavy and light fermions. While equal-mass Fermi gases with infinitely large interspecies s-wave scattering length $a_s$ are universal, we find that unequal mass Fermi gases are, for sufficiently large $κ$ and in the regime where Efimov physics is absent, not universal. In particular, the $(N_1,N_2)=(2,1)$ and $(3,1)$ systems exhibit three-body (3b) and four-body …

We obtain the phase diagram for a harmonically trapped dilute dipolar condensate with a short ranged conservative three-body interaction. We show that this system supports two distinct fluid states: a usual condensate state and a self-cohering droplet state. We develop a simple model to quantify the energetics of these states, which we verify with full numerical calculations. Based on our simple model we develop a phase diagram showing that there is a first order phase transition between the states. Using dynamical simulations we explore the phase transition dynamics, revealing that the drople…
We analytically determine the properties of three interacting fermions in a harmonic trap subject to an external rotation. Thermodynamic quantities such as the entropy and energy are calculated from the third order quantum virial expansion. By parameterizing the solutions in the rotating frame we find that the energy and entropy are universal for all rotations in the strongly interacting regime. Additionally, we find that rotation suppresses the onset of itinerant ferromagnetism in strongly interacting repulsive three-body systems.
In Efimov physics, a three-body parameter (3BP), previously regarded as nonuniversal, uniquely defines bound and scattering properties of three particles. A universal 3BP, however, have been recently shown in experiments and theory in ultracold homonuclear gases. Our present study further predicts a universal 3BP for heteronuclear atomic systems near broad Feshbach resonances, and provides physical interpretations for its origin. We show that for a system composed of two light and one heavy atoms, the physical origin of the universal 3BP is similar to the homonuclear case while for systems com…
