The INTEGRAL satellite, observing the sky at high energy, has quadrupled the number of supergiant X-ray Binaries known in the Galaxy and has revealed new populations of previously hidden High Mass X-ray Binaries. These observations raise new questions about the formation and evolution of these sources. The number of detected sources is now high enough to allow us to carry out a statistical analysis of the distribution of HMXBs in the Milky Way. We derive the distance of each HMXB using a Spectral Energy Distribution fitting procedure, and we examine the correlation with the distribution of star forming complexes (SFCs) in the Galaxy. We show that HMXBs are clustered with SFCs, with a typical size of 0.3 kpc and a characteristic distance between clusters of 1.7 kpc.
We explore the formation of double-compact-object binaries in Milky Way (MW) globular clusters (GCs) that may be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We use a set of 137 fully evolved GC models that, overall, effectively match the properties of the observed GCs in the MW. We estimate that, in total, the MW GCs contain $\sim21$ sources that will be detectable by LISA. These detectable sources contain all combinations of black hole (BH), neutron star, and white dwarf components. We predict $\sim7$ of these sources will be BH-BH binaries. Furthermore, we show that some of …
We determine the main properties of the Galactic binary black hole (BBH) population detectable by LISA and strategies to distinguish them from the much more numerous white dwarf binaries. We simulate BBH populations based on cosmological simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies and binary evolution models. We then determine their gravitational wave emission as observed by LISA and build mock catalogs. According to our model LISA will detect $\approx4(6)$ binary black holes assuming 4(10) years of operations. Those figures grow to $\approx6(9)$ when models are re-normalized to the inferred LIGO/V…
Binary-single and binary-binary encounters play a pivotal role in the evolution of star clusters, as they may lead to the disruption or hardening of binaries, a novel prediction of the Hills-Heggie law. Based on our recent {\it Chandra} survey of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we revisit the role of stellar dynamical interactions in GCs, focusing on main-sequence (MS) binary encounters as a potential formation channel of the observed X-ray sources in GCs. We show that the cumulative X-ray luminosity ($L_X$), a proxy of the total number of X-ray-emitting binaries (primarily cataclysmic varia…
We explore the population of mass-transferring binaries ejected from globular clusters (GCs) with both black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) accretors. We use a set of 137 fully evolved globular cluster models which span a large range in cluster properties and, overall, match very well the properties of old GCs observed in the Milky Way. We identify all binaries ejected from our set of models that eventually undergo mass-transfer. These binaries are ejected from their host clusters over a wide range of ejection times and include white dwarf, giant, and main sequence donors. We calculate the or…
We present a set of 148 independent $N$-body simulations of globular clusters (GCs) computed using the code $\texttt{CMC}$ ($\texttt{Cluster Monte Carlo}$). At an age of $\sim10-13\,$Gyr, the resulting models cover nearly the full range of cluster properties exhibited by the Milky Way GCs, including total mass, core and half-light radii, metallicity, and galactocentric distance. We use our models to investigate the role that stellar-mass black holes play in the process of core collapse. Furthermore, we study how dynamical interactions affect the formation and evolution of several important typ…

Very Wide Binary Stars as the Primary Source of Stellar Collisions in the Galaxy
We show that the recently discovered binary 2M05215658+4359220 (2M0521), comprised of a giant star (GS) orbiting a suspected black hole (BH) in a ~80 day orbit, may be instrumental in shedding light on uncertain BH-formation physics and can be a test case for studying wind accretion models. Using binary population synthesis with a realistic prescription for the star formation history and metallicity evolution of the Milky Way, we analyze the evolution of binaries containing compact objects (COs) in orbit around GSs with properties similar to 2M0521. We find ~100-1000 CO-GS binaries in the Milk…
The nature of GW190425, a presumed binary neutron star (BNS) merger detected by the LIGO/Virgo Scientific Collaboration (LVC) with a total mass of $3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ M$_{\odot}$, remains a mystery. With such a large total mass, GW190425 stands at five standard deviations away from the total mass distribution of Galactic BNSs of $2.66\pm 0.12$ M$_{\odot}$. LVC suggested that this system could be a BNS formed from a fast-merging channel rendering its non-detection at radio wavelengths due to selection effects. BNSs with orbital periods less than a few hours - progenitors of LIGO/Virgo mergers -…
Based on archival {\it Chandra} data, we have carried out an X-ray survey of 69, or nearly half the known population of, Milky Way globular clusters (GCs), focusing on weak X-ray sources, mainly cataclysmic variables (CVs) and coronally active binaries (ABs). Using the cumulative X-ray luminosity per unit stellar mass (i.e., X-ray emissivity) as a proxy of the source abundance, we demonstrate a paucity (lower by $41\%\pm27\%$ on average) of weak X-ray sources in most GCs relative to the field, which is represented by the Solar neighborhood and Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxies. We also rev…
Observations of the Milky Way at TeV-PeV energies reveal a bright diffuse flux of hadronic cosmic rays and also bright point sources of gamma rays. If the gamma-ray sources are hadronic cosmic-ray accelerators, then they must also be neutrino sources. However, no neutrino sources have been detected. Where are they? We introduce a new population-based approach to probe Milky Way hadronic PeVatrons, demanding consistency between diffuse and point-source PeV-range data on cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos. For the PeVatrons, two extreme scenarios are allowed: (1) the hadronic cosmic-ray acce…
In the Milky Way, $\sim$18 Wolf-Rayet+O (WR+O) binaries are known with estimates of their stellar and orbital parameters. Whereas black hole+O (BH+O) binaries are thought to evolve from the former, only one such system is known in the Milky Way. To resolve this disparity, it was suggested that upon core collapse, the WR stars receive large kicks such that most of the binaries are disrupted. We reassess this issue, with emphasis on the uncertainty in the formation of an accretion disk around wind-accreting BHs in BH+O binaries, which is key to identifying such systems. We follow the methodology…
The multitude of binary black hole coalescence detections in gravitational waves has renewed our interest on environments that can be the cradle of these mergers. In this work we study merger rates of binary black holes in globular clusters that are among the most dense stellar environments and a natural place for the creation of black hole binaries. To model these systems with all their variations we rely on the observational properties of the known Milky Way globular clusters. We consider direct capture events between black holes, as well as soft interactions of black hole binaries with star…
In this chapter, I present the main X-ray observational characteristics of black-hole binaries and low magnetic field neutron-star binaries, concentrating on what can be considered similarities or differences, with particular emphasis on their fast-timing behaviour.
Spectral analysis of the gamma-ray background near the dwarf Milky Way satellite Segue 1: Improved limits on the cross section of neutralino dark matter annihilation
Gamma-ray binaries are a subclass of high-mass binary systems whose energy spectrum peaks at high energies (E$\gtrsim$100 MeV) and extends to very high energies (E$\gtrsim$100 GeV) $γ$ rays. In this review we summarize properties of well-studied non-transient $γ$-ray binaries as well as briefly discuss poorly known systems and transient systems hosting a microquasar. We discuss also theoretical models that have been used to describe spectral and timing characteristics of considered systems

Cosmic rays (CRs) propagate in the Milky Way and interact with the interstellar medium and magnetic fields. These interactions produce emissions that span the electromagnetic spectrum, and are an invaluable tool for understanding the intensities and spectra of CRs in distant regions, far beyond those probed by direct CR measurements. We present updates on the study of CR properties by combining multi-frequency observations of the interstellar emission and latest CR direct measurements with propagation models.
Calibrating X-ray binary luminosity functions via optical reconnaissance II. The high-mass XLF and globular cluster population of X-ray binaries in the low star-forming spiral M81
Neutron star X-ray binaries (NS XRBs) associated with supernova remnants (SNRs) are the youngest X-ray binaries that can provide insights into the early evolution of X-ray binaries and the formation properties of neutron stars. There are an increasing number of NS XRBs discovered to be harbored in SNRs in our and nearby galaxies. In this work, we perform binary population synthesis calculations to simulate the population of NS XRBs associated with SNRs for different types of companions, including Roche-lobe overfilling main-sequence stars, Be stars and supergiants. We estimate their birthrates…
Short-period (P<1 hour) white dwarf binaries will be the most numerous sources for the space-based gravitational wave detector LISA. Based on thousands of resolved systems, we will be able to constrain binary evolution and provide a new map of the Milky Way and its surroundings. Here we predict the main properties of populations of different types of detached white dwarf binaries detected by LISA. For the first time, we combine a high-resolution cosmological simulation of a Milky Way-mass galaxy (from the FIRE project) with a binary population synthesis model for low and intermediate mass star…
On the displacement of X-ray binaries from star clusters in star-burst galaxies
X-ray and gamma-ray binaries are systems consisting of a compact object and normally a non-degenerate companion star. Most of these sources have been shown to emit radiation in a broad frequency range, from radio up to X-rays and sometimes gamma rays. We report on recent results in very high-energy gamma rays above 100 GeV obtained by the MAGIC Collaboration for the Galactic X-ray binaries MAXI J1820+070 and 1A 0535+262, and the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. Multiwavelength data at lower energies are also provided for a better contextualisation of the sources.
