A full reflective subcategory E of a presheaf category [C*,Set] is the category of sheaves for a topology j on C if and only if the reflection preserves finite limits. Such an E is called a Grothendieck topos. More generally, one can consider two topologies, j contained in k, and the category of sheaves for j which are separated for k. The categories E of this form, for some C, j, and k, are the Grothendieck quasitoposes of the title, previously studied by Borceux and Pedicchio, and include many examples of categories of spaces. They also include the category of concrete sheaves for a concrete site. We show that a full reflective subcategory E of [C*,Set] arises in this way for some j and k if and only if the reflection preserves monomorphisms as well as pullbacks over elements of E.
Every Serre subcategory of an abelian category is assigned a unique type. The type of a Serre subcategory of a Grothendieck category is in the list: $$(0, 0), \ (0, -1), \ (1, -1), \ (0, -2), \ (1, -2), \ (2, -1), \ (+\infty, -\infty);$$ and for each $(m, -n)$ in this list, there exists a Serre subcategory such that its type is $(m, -n)$. This uses right (left) recollements of abelian categories, Tachikawa-Ohtake [TO] on strongly hereditary torsion pairs, and Geigle-Lenzing [GL] on localizing subcategories. If all the functors in a recollement of abelian categories are exact, then the recollem…
We give examples of pairs (G1,G2) where G1 is a Grothendieck category and G2 a full Grothendieck subcategory of G1, the inclusion G2 --> G1 being denoted i, for which R^+i : D^+G2 --> D^+G1 (or even Ri : DG2 --> DG1) is a full embedding. This yields generalizations of some results of Bernstein and Lunts, and of Cline, Parshall and Scott.
We study the Grothendieck monoid (a monoid version of the Grothendieck group) of an extriangulated category, and give some results which are new even for abelian categories. First, we classify Serre subcategories and dense 2-out-of-3 subcategories using the Grothendieck monoid. Second, in good situations, we show that the Grothendieck monoid of the localization of an extriangulated category is isomorphic to the natural quotient monoid of the original Grothendieck monoid. This includes the cases of the Serre quotient of an abelian category and the Verdier quotient of a triangulated category. As…
The aim of the paper is to discuss the relation subgroups of the Grothendieck groups of extriangulated categories and certain other subgroups. It is shown that a locally finite extriangulated category $\C$ has Auslander-Reiten $\E-$triangles and the relations of the Grothendieck group $K_{0}(\C)$ are generated by the Auslander-Rieten $\E-$triangles. A partial converse result is given when restricting to the triangulated categories with a cluster tilting subcategory: in the triangulated category $\C$ with a cluster tilting subcategory, the relations of the Grothendieck group $K_0(\C)$ are gener…
We construct a "diagonal" cofibrantly generated model structre on the category of simplicial objects in the category of topological categories sCat_{Top}, which is the category of diagrams [Δ^{op}, Cat_{Top}]. Moreover, we prove that the diagonal model structures is left proper and cellular. We also prove that the category of \infty-groupoids (the full subcategory of topological categories) has a cofibrantly generated model structure and is Quillen equivalent to the model category of simplicial sets, which proves the Grothendieck's homotopy hypothesis.
The center $Z(\mathcal{A})$ of an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ is the endomorphism ring of the identity functor on that category. A localizing subcategory of a Grothendieck category $\mathcal{C}$ is said to be stable if it is stable under essential extensions. The set $\mathbf{L}^{st}(\mathcal{C})$ of stable localizing subcategories of $\mathcal{C}$ is partially ordered under reverse inclusion. We show $\mathcal{L} \mapsto Z(\mathcal{C}/\mathcal{L})$ defines a sheaf of commutative rings on $\mathbf{L}^{st}(\mathcal{C})$ with respect to finite coverings. When $\mathcal{C}$ is assumed to be lo…
We define the Grothendieck group of an $n$-exangulated category. For $n$ odd, we show that this group shares many properties with the Grothendieck group of an exact or a triangulated category. In particular, we classify dense complete subcategories of an $n$-exangulated category with an $n$-(co)generator in terms of subgroups of the Grothendieck group. This unifies and extends results of Thomason, Bergh--Thaule, Matsui and Zhu--Zhuang for triangulated, $(n+2)$-angulated, exact and extriangulated categories, respectively. We also introduce the notion of an $n$-exangulated subcategory and prove …
Auslander's formula shows that any abelian category C is equivalent to the category of coherent functors on C modulo the Serre subcategory of all effaceable functors. We establish a derived version of this equivalence. This amounts to showing that the homotopy category of injective objects of some appropriate Grothendieck abelian category (the category of ind-objects of C) is compactly generated and that the full subcategory of compact objects is equivalent to the bounded derived category of C. The same approach shows for an arbitrary Grothendieck abelian category that its derived category and…
A full subcategory of a Grothendieck category is called deconstructible if it consists of all transfinite extensions of some set of objects. This concept provides a handy framework for structure theory and construction of approximations for subcategories of Grothendieck categories. It also allows to construct model structures and t-structures on categories of complexes over a Grothendieck category. In this paper we aim to establish fundamental results on deconstructible classes and outline how to apply these in the areas mentioned above. This is related to recent work of Gillespie, Enochs, Est…
Given any additive category $\mathcal{C}$ with split idempotents, pseudokernels and pseudocokernels, we show that a subcategory $\mathcal{B}$ is coreflective if, and only if, it is precovering, closed under direct summands and each morphism in $\mathcal{B}$ has a pseudocokernel in $\mathcal{C}$ that belongs to $\mathcal{B}$. We apply this result and its dual to, among others, preabelian and pretriangulated categories. As a consequence, we show that a subcategory of a preabelian category is coreflective if, and only it, it is precovering and closed under taking cokernels. On the other hand, if …
We prove that the derived category of a Grothendieck abelian category has a unique dg enhancement. Under some additional assumptions, we show that the same result holds true for its subcategory of compact objects. As a consequence, we deduce that the unbounded derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on an algebraic stack and the category of perfect complexes on a noetherian concentrated algebraic stack with quasi-finite affine diagonal and enough perfect coherent sheaves have a unique dg enhancement. In particular, the category of perfect complexes on a noetherian scheme with enough locally…
For a locally finitely presented Grothendieck category $\mathcal{A}$, we consider a certain subcategory of the homotopy category of FP-injective objects in $\mathcal{A}$ which we show is compactly generated. In the case where $\mathcal{A}$ is locally coherent, we identify this subcategory with the derived category of FP-injective objects in $\mathcal{A}$. Our results are, in a sense, dual to the ones obtained by Neeman on the homotopy category of flat modules. Our proof is based on extending a characterization of the pure acyclic complexes which is due to Emmanouil.
In the setting of compactly generated triangulated categories, we show that the heart of a (co)silting t-structure is a Grothendieck category if and only if the (co)silting object satisfies a purity assumption. Moreover, in the cosilting case the previous conditions are related to the coaisle of the t-structure being a definable subcategory. If we further assume our triangulated category to be algebraic, it follows that the heart of any nondegenerate compactly generated t-structure is a Grothendieck category.
While the Yoneda embedding and its generalizations have been studied extensively in the literature, the so-called tensor embedding has only received little attention. In this paper, we study the tensor embedding for closed symmetric monoidal categories and show how it is connected to the notion of geometrically purity, which has recently been investigated in works of Enochs, Estrada, Gillespie, and Odabaşı. More precisely, for a Gro\-thendieck cosmos---that is, a bicomplete Grothendick category $\mathcal{V}$ with a closed symmetric monoidal structure---we prove that the geometrically pure exac…
