We study the effects of vacancy disorder on the Kitaev model defined on a hexagonal lattice. We show that the vacancy disorder induces a zero-mode that is localized at the defect site. We derive analytical forms for these localized wave functions in both the gapped and gapless phases of the Kitaev model. We conjecture that the vacancy disorder can be utilized as a probe of the quantum phase transition (from the gapped to gapless phases) in this model. The behavior of the Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR) in the gapless phase and across the transition is also studied numerically. Comments are made about the behavior of site-site entanglement in the single particle states for the case of a single vacancy.
The Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention due to its exactly solvable spin-liquid ground state with fractionalized Majorana excitations and its possible materialization in magnetic Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit couplings. Recently, the 5d-electron compound H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ has shown to be a strong candidate for Kitaev physics considering the absence of any signs of a long-range ordered magnetic state. In this work, we demonstrate that a finite density of random vacancies in the Kitaev model gives rise to a striking pileup of low-energy Majorana eigenmodes …
We study the effect of site dilution in Kitaev's model. We derive an analytical solution of the dynamical spin correlation functions for arbitrary configurations of $Z_2$ fluxes. By incorporating this solution into classical Monte Carlo scheme, we address how a site vacancy affects the experimental observables, such as the static spin susceptibility and the spin lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1$. As a result, we found an enhancement of dynamical magnetic response in the vicinity of vacancy, which leads to Friedel-like oscillation in local $1/T_1$, in contrast to limited influences on the static…
It is widely accepted that topological superconductors can only have an effective interpretation in terms of curved geometry rather than gauge fields due to their charge neutrality. This approach is commonly employed in order to investigate their properties, such as the behaviour of their energy currents. Nevertheless, it is not known how accurately curved geometry can describe actual microscopic models. Here, we demonstrate that the low-energy properties of the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model, a topological superconductor that supports localised Majorana zero modes at its vortex excitations, a…
We study the possibility to realize Majorana zero mode that's robust and may be easily manipulated for braiding in quantum computing in the ground state of the Kitaev model in this work. To achieve this we first apply a uniform [111] magnetic field to the gapless Kitaev model and turn the Kitaev model to an effective p + ip topological superconductor of spinons. We then study possible vortex binding in such system to a topologically trivial spot in the ground state. We consider two cases in the system: one is a vacancy and the other is a fully polarized spin. We show that in both cases, the sy…
Quenched disorder may prevent the formation of the widely sought quantum-spin-liquid states (QSLs) or mask their signatures by inducing a spin-glass state, which is why considerable experimental efforts are directed at purifying materials that may host QSLs. However, in geometrically frustrated (GF) magnets, the largest class of materials in which QSLs are sought, the glass-transition temperature $T_g$ grows with decreasing the density of vacancy defects, accompanied by a simultaneous growth of the magnetic susceptibility. In this paper, we develop a phenomenological theory of glass transition…
We study the effect of adding disorder to the exactly solvable Kitaev model on the hyper-honeycomb lattice, which hosts both gapped and gapless spin liquid phases with an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. The latter has an unusual gapless spectrum of Majorana fermion excitations, with a co-dimension-two Fermi ring. We thus address the question of the interplay of topological physics and disorder by considering the properties of isolated single and pair of vacancies. We show that near the vacancies, the local magnetic response to a field $h_z$ is parametrically enhanced in comparison to the …
We discover novel topological effects in the one-dimensional Kitaev chain modified by long-range Hamiltonian deformations in the hopping and pairing terms. This class of models display symmetry-protected topological order measured by the Berry/Zak phase of the lower band eigenvector and the winding number of the Hamiltonians. For exponentially-decaying hopping amplitudes, the topological sector can be significantly augmented as the penetration length increases, something experimentally achievable. For power-law decaying superconducting pairings, the massless Majorana modes at the edges get pai…
Predictions of localized Majorana modes, and ideas for manipulating these degrees of freedom, are the two key ingredients in proposals for physical platforms for Majorana quantum computation. Several proposals envisage a scalable network of such Majorana modes coupled bilinearly to each other by quantum-mechanical mixing amplitudes. Here, we develop a theoretical framework for characterizing collective topologically protected zero-energy Majorana fermion excitations of such networks of localized Majorana modes. A key ingredient in our work is the Gallai-Edmonds decomposition of a general graph…
