We study the superfluid state of two-species heteronuclear Fermi gases with isotropic contact and anisotropic long-range dipolar interactions. By explicitly taking account of Fock exchange contribution, we derive self-consistent equations describing the pairing states in the system. Exploiting the symmetry of the system, we developed an efficient way of solving the self-consistent equations by exploiting the symmetries. We find that the temperature tends to increase the anisotropy of the pairing state, which is rather counterintuitive. We study the anisotropic properties of the system by examining the angular dependence of the number density distribution, the excitation spectrum and the pair correlation function. The competing effects of the contact interaction and the dipolar interaction upon the anisotropy are revealed. We derive and compute the superfluid mass density $ρ_{ij}$ for the system. Astonishingly, we find that $ρ_{zz}$ becomes negative above some certain temperature $T^*$($T<T_c$), signaling some instability of the system. This suggests that the elusive FFLO state may be observed in experiments, due to an anisotropic state with a spontaneously generated superflow.
We present a technique for engineering quantum magnets via ultracold polar molecules in optical lattices and explore exotic interplay between its spin superfluidity and solidity. The molecular ground and first excited rotational states are resonantly coupled by a linearly polarized microwave field. The spin-up (spin-down) states are presented by molecular rotational states of electric dipole moment along (against) the coupling field. By controlling the angle between the lattice direction and the coupling field, the inter-site interaction can be tuned from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. Fu…
We theoretically investigate how the presence of a reservoir of incoherent excitations affects the superfluidity properties of resonantly driven polariton fluids. While in the absence of reservoir the two cases of a defect moving in a fluid at rest and of a fluid flowing against a static defect are linked by a formal Galilean transformation, here the reservoir defines a privileged reference frame attached to the semiconductor structure and causes markedly different features between the two settings. The consequences on the critical velocity for superfluidity are highlighted and compared to exp…
We consider fermionic polar molecules in a bilayer geometry where they are oriented perpendicularly to the layers, which permits both low inelastic losses and superfluid pairing. The dipole-dipole interaction between molecules of different layers leads to the emergence of interlayer superfluids. The superfluid regimes range from BCS-like fermionic superfluidity with a high $T_c$ to Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensation of interlayer dimers, thus exhibiting a peculiar BCS-BEC crossover. We show that one can cover the entire crossover regime under current experimental conditions.
We show the spin-orbital coupling induced by an artificial light-induced gauge field can fully restore superfluidity suppressed by population imbalance in a two-dimensional (2D) Fermi gas, leading to unconventional superfluid states either with topological Majorana fermion excitations or showing a novel mixture of triplet pairing with spin-up (down) components respectively in the $p_{x}\pm ip_{y}$ pairing channels. We self-consistently calculate the zero temperature phase diagram at the BCS\ side of Feshbach resonance and show that the phase transitions between different superfluid states can …
We investigate the attractive Hubbard model in infinite spatial dimensions by means of dynamical mean-field theory. Using a continuous-time Monte Carlo algorithm in the Nambu formalism as an impurity solver, we directly deal with the superfluid phase in the population imbalanced system. By calculating the superfluid order parameter, the magnetization, and the density of states, we discuss how the polarized superfluid state is realized in the attractive Hubbard model at quarter filling. We find that a drastic change in the density of states is induced by spin imbalanced populations in the super…
Due to their driven-dissipative nature, photonic quantum fluids present new challenges in understanding superfluidity. Some associated effects have been observed, and notably the report of nearly dissipationless flow for coherently driven microcavity-polaritons was taken as a smoking gun for superflow. Here we show that the superfluid response --- the difference between responses to longitudinal and transverse forces --- is zero for coherently driven polaritons. This is a consequence of the gapped excitation spectrum caused by external phase locking. Furthermore, while a normal component exist…
We theoretically investigate the behavior of a mobile impurity immersed in a one-dimensional quasi-periodic Fermi system with topological $p$-wave superfluidity. This polaron problem is solved by using a standard variational approach, the so-called Chevy ansatz. The polaron states are found to be strongly affected by the strength of the quasi-disorder and the amplitude of the $p$-wave pairing. We analyze the phase diagram of the polaron ground state and find four phases: two extended phases, a weakly-localized phase and a strongly-localized phase. It is remarkable that these polaron phases are…
We consider a layered system of fermionic molecules with permanent dipole moments aligned by an external field. The dipole interactions between fermions in adjacent layers are attractive and induce inter-layer pairing. Due to competition for pairing among adjacent layers, the mean-field ground state of the layered system is a dimerized superfluid, with pairing only between every-other layer. We construct an effective Ising-XY lattice model that describes the interplay between dimerization and superfluid phase fluctuations. In addition to the dimerized superfluid ground state, and high temperat…
We present an extensive study of two-dimensional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) superfluidity in a spin-imbalanced two-component atomic Fermi gas. In the context of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin- Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, we explore a wide and generic class of pairing gap functions with ex- plicit spatial dependency. The mean-field theory of such phases is applied through the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in which the pairing gap can be determined self-consistently. In order to systemat- ically explore the configuration space we consider both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles where we control the p…
We discuss the evolution from BCS to Bose superfluidity for ultracold fermions in two-dimensions and in the presence of simultaneous spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. We analyze several thermodynamic properties to characterize different superfluid phases including pressure, compressibility, induced polarization, and spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we compute the momentum distribution and construct topological invariants for each of the superfluid phases.
In this work, we discuss the emergence of $p$-wave superfluids of identical fermions in 2D lattices. The optical lattice potential manifests itself in an interplay between an increase in the density of states on the Fermi surface and the modification of the fermion-fermion interaction (scattering) amplitude. The density of states is enhanced due to an increase of the effective mass of atoms. In deep lattices, for short-range interacting atoms, the scattering amplitude is strongly reduced compared to free space due to a small overlap of wavefunctions of fermions sitting in the neighboring latti…
Quantum degenerate cold-atom gases provide a remarkable opportunity to study strongly interacting systems. Recent experimental progress in producing ultracold polar molecules with a net electric dipole moment opens up new possibilities to realize novel quantum phases governed by the long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. In this work we predict the existence of experimentally observable novel broken-symmetry states with spontaneous interlayer coherence in cold polar molecules. These exotic states appear due to strong repulsive interlayer interactions and exhibit properties of s…
The spin dynamics of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of sodium atoms is experimentally investigated at finite temperature. In the collisional regime the motion of the thermal component is shown to be damped because of spin drag, while the two condensates exhibit a counter flow oscillation without friction, thereby providing direct evidence for spin superfluidity. Results are also reported in the collisionless regime where the spin components of both the condensate and thermal part oscillate without damping, their relative motion being driven by a mean field effect…
By using a well established 'ab initio' theoretical approach developed in the past to quantitatively study the superconductivity of condensed matter systems, which is based on the Kohn-Sham Density Functional theory, I study the superfluid properties and the BCS-BEC crossover of two parallel bi-dimensional layers of fermionic dipolar molecules, where the pairing mechanism leading to superfluidity is provided by the inter-layer coupling between dipoles. The finite temperature superfluid properties of both the homogeneous system and one were the fermions in each layer are confined by a square op…
Recent work on ultracold polar molecules, governed by a generalization of the t-J Hamiltonian, suggests that molecules may be better suited than atoms for studying d-wave superfluidity due to stronger interactions and larger tunability of the system. We compute the phase diagram for polar molecules in a checkerboard lattice consisting of weakly coupled square plaquettes. In the simplest experimentally realizable case where there is only tunneling and an XX-type spin-spin interaction, we identify the parameter regime where d-wave superfluidity occurs. We also find that the inclusion of a densit…
By applying the recently proposed antisymmetric superfluid local density approximation (ASLDA) to strongly interacting polarized atomic gases at unitarity in very elongated traps, we find families of Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) type of solutions with prominent transversal oscillation of pairing potential. These LO states coexist with a superfluid state having a smooth pairing potential. We suggest that the LO phase could be accessible experimentally by increasing adiabatically the trap aspect ratio. We show that the local asymmetry effects contained in ASLDA do not support a deformed superfluid co…
The system of ultracold atoms with hyperfine spin $F=3/2$ might be unstable against the formation of quintet pairs if the interaction is attractive in the quintet channel. We have investigated the behavior of correlation functions in a model including only s-wave interactions at quarter filling by large-scale density-matrix renormalization-group simulations. We show that the correlations of quintet pairs become quasi-long-ranged, when the system is partially polarized, leading to the emergence of various mixed superfluid phases in which BCS-like pairs carrying different magnetic moment coexist…
We study the superfluid pairing in a two-species gas of heteronuclear fermionic molecules with equal density. The interplay of the isotropic s-wave interaction and anisotropic long-range dipolar interaction reveals rich physics. We find that the single-particle momentum distribution has a characteristic ellipsoidal shape that can be reasonably represented by a deformation parameter $α$ defined similarly to the normal phase. Interesting momentum-dependent features of the order parameter are identified. We calculate the critical temperatures of both the singlet and triplet superfluid, suggesting…
In this paper we discuss, within the Gross--Pitaevskii framework, superfluidity, soliton nucleation, and instabilities in a non-equilibrium polariton fluid injected by a spatially localized and continuous-wave coherent pump and flowing against a defect located outside the pump spot. In contrast to equilibrium condensates, the steady-state solutions of the driven-dissipative equations in this specific geometry hardly show a clean superfluid flow around the defect and rather feature a crossover from shallow to deep soliton-like perturbation. This is explained in terms of the properties of one-di…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional attractive Fermi-Hubbard model with spin-dependent hoppings and an on-site Rabi coupling using the density matrix renormalization group method. In particular, we show that even in the limit of one component being immobile the pair superfluidity can be resonantly enhanced when the Rabi coupling is on the order of the interaction strength just before the system starts to strongly polarize. We derive an effective spin-1/2 XXZ model in order to understand the ground-state properties in the strong attraction limit.
The induced intraspecies interactions among the majority species, mediated by the minority species, is computed for a population-imbalanced two-component Fermi gas. Although the Feshbach-resonance mediated interspecies interaction is dominant for equal populations, leading to singlet s-wave pairing, we find that in the strongly imbalanced regime the induced intraspecies interaction leads to p-wave pairing and superfluidity of the majority species. Thus, we predict that the observed spin-polaron Fermi liquid state in this regime is unstable to p-wave superfluidity, in accordance with the result…
Fluids of exciton-polaritons, excitations of two dimensional quantum wells in optical cavities, show collective phenomena akin to Bose condensation. However, a fundamental difference from standard condensates stems from the finite life-time of these excitations, which necessitate continuous driving to maintain a steady state. A basic question is whether a two dimensional condensate with long range algebraic correlations can exist under these non-equilibrium conditions. Here we show that such driven two-dimensional Bose systems cannot exhibit algebraic superfluid order except in low-symmetry, a…
We study the BCS superfluid transition in a single-component fermionic gas of dipolar particles loaded in a tight bilayer trap, with the electric dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the layers. Based on the detailed analysis of the interlayer scattering, we calculate the critical temperature of the interlayer superfluid pairing transition when the layer separation is both smaller (dilute regime) and of the order or larger (dense regime) than the mean interparticle separation in each layer. Our calculations go beyond the standard BCS approach and include the many-body contributions result…
We present an overview of recent developments in species-imbalanced ("polarized") Feshbach-resonant Fermi gases. We summarize the current status of thermodynamics of these systems in terms of a phase diagram as a function of the Feshbach resonance detuning, polarization and temperature. We review instabilities of the s-wave superfluidity across the BEC-BCS crossover to phase separation, FFLO states, polarized molecular superfluidity and the normal state, driven by the species imbalance. We discuss different models and approximations of this system and compare their predictions to current exper…
We study the superfluid behavior of a population imbalanced ultracold atomic Fermi gases with a short range attractive interaction in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, using a pairing fluctuation theory. We show that, besides widespread pseudogap phenomena and intermediate temperature superfluidity, the superfluid phase is readily destroyed except in a limited region of the parameter space. We find a new mechanism for pair hopping, assisted by the excessive majority fermions, in the presence of continuum-lattice mixing, which leads to an unusual constant BEC asymptote for $T_c$ that is i…
We study the superfluid character of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) in a quasi-two dimensional (q2D) geometry. In particular, we allow for the dipole polarization to have some non-zero projection into the plane of the condensate so that the effective interaction is anisotropic in this plane, yielding an anisotropic dispersion for propagation of quasiparticles. By performing direct numerical simulations of a probe moving through the DBEC, we observe the sudden onset of drag or creation of vortex-antivortex pairs at critical velocities that depend strongly on the direction of the prob…
Superfluidity, the ability of a liquid or gas to flow with zero viscosity, is one of the most remarkable implications of collective quantum coherence. In equilibrium systems like liquid 4He and ultracold atomic gases, superfluid behaviour conjugates diverse yet related phenomena, such as persistency of metastable flow in multiply connected geometries and the existence of a critical velocity for frictionless flow when hitting a static defect. The link between these different aspects of superfluid behaviour is far less clear in driven-dissipative systems displaying collective coherence, such as …
We reveal that the p-wave superfluid can be realized in a mixture of fermionic and F=1 bosonic gases. We derive a general set of the gap equations for gaps in the s- and p-channels. It is found that the spin-spin bose-fermi interactions favor the p-wave pairing and naturally suppress the pairing in the s-channel. The gap equations for the polar phase of p-wave superfluid fermions are numerically solved. It is shown that a pure p-wave superfluid can be observed in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics.
Recent groundbreaking experiments studying the effects of spin polarization on pairing in unitary Fermi gases encountered mutual qualitative and quantitative discrepancies which seem to be a function of the confining geometry. Using novel numerical algorithms we study the solution space for a 3-dimensional fully self-consistent formulation of realistic systems with up to $10^{5}$ atoms. A study of the three types of solutions obtained demonstrates a tendency towards metastability as the confining geometry is elongated. One of these solutions, which is consistent with Rice experiments at high t…
We develop a simple numerical method that allows us to calculate the Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer (BCS) superfluid transition temperature (Tc) precisely for any interaction potential. We apply it to a polarised, ultracold Fermi gas with long-range, anisotropic, dipolar interactions and include the effects of anisotropic exchange interactions. We pay particular attention to the short-range behaviour of dipolar gasses and re-examine current renormalisation methods. In particular, we find that dimerisation of both atoms and molecules significantly hampers the formation of a superfluid. The end result…
By selecting two dressed rotational states of ultracold polar molecules in an optical lattice, we obtain a highly tunable generalization of the t-J model, which we refer to as the t-J-V-W model. In addition to XXZ spin exchange, the model features density-density interactions and novel density-spin interactions; all interactions are dipolar. We show that full control of all interaction parameters in both magnitude and sign can be achieved independently of each other and of the tunneling. As a first step towards demonstrating the potential of the system, we apply the density matrix renormalizat…

We review recent results on the coherence and superfluidity of driven dissipative condensates, i.e., systems of weakly-interacting non-conserved Bosons, such as polariton condensates. The presence of driving and dissipation has dramatically different effects depending on dimensionality and anisotropy. In three dimensions, equilibrium behaviour is recovered at large scales for static correlations, while the dynamical behaviour is altered by the microscopic driving. In two dimensions, for an isotropic system, drive and dissipation destroy the algebraic order that would otherwise exist, however a…
We investigate the spin-polarized chain of ultracold fermionic atoms with spin-3/2 described by the fermionic Hubbard model with SU(4) symmetric attractive interaction. The competition of bound pairs, trions, quartets and unbound atoms is studied analytically and by density matrix renormalization group simulations. We find several distinct states where bound particles coexist with the ferromagnetic state of unpaired fermions. In particular, an exotic inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-type superfluid of quartets in a magnetic background of uncorrelated atoms is found for wea…
Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state which combines the superfluidity and spatial periodicity of pairing order parameter and exhibits the supersolid properties has been attracting intense attention in both condensed matter physics and ultracold atoms. Conventionally, realization of LO state from an intrinsic s-wave interacting system necessitates to break the time-reversal (TR) and sometimes spatial-inversion (SI) symmetries. Here we report a novel prediction that the LO state can be realized in a TR and SI symmetric system representing a bilayer Fermi gas subjected to a laserassisted interlayer tunn…
We study fermion pairing in a population-imbalanced mixture of $^{6}$Li atomic gas loaded in a three-dimensional lattice at very low temperatures. Using the number equation for each population, the gap equation and the equation for the Helmholtz free energy, we determine the gap, chemical potentials and pair-momentum as functions of polarization. These parameters define the stability regions for: a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase; a phase separation region where BCS and normal phases coexist; a Sarma phase when the pair-momentum vanishes, and the transition to the normal phase when the …
The induced interaction among the majority spin species, due to the presence of the minority species, is computed for the case of a population-imbalanced resonantly-interacting Fermi gas. It is shown that this interaction leads to an instability, at low temperatures, of the recently observed polaron Fermi liquid phase of strongly imbalanced Fermi gases to a p-wave superfluid state. We find that the associated transition temperature, while quite small in the weakly interacting BCS regime, is experimentally accessible in the strongly interacting unitary regime.
We show that photon number measurement can be used to detect superfluidity for a two-band Bose-Hubbard model coupled to a cavity field. The atom-photon coupling induces transitions between the two internal atomic levels and results in entangled polaritonic states. In the presence of a cavity field, we find different photon numbers in the Mott-insulating versus superfluid phases, providing a method of distinguishing the atomic phases by photon counting. Furthermore, we examine the dynamics of the photon field after a rapid quench to zero atomic hopping by increasing the well depth. We find a ro…
We systematically investigate the p-wave superfluidity of a Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas, where the soft-core effective interaction is of finite radius $R_{c}$ due to blockade effects. After solving the BCS gap equation and comparing the free energy, we obtain the quantum phase diagram, which is composed of three different phases: polar ($p_{z}$), axial ($p_{x}+ip_{y}$), and axi-planar ($p_{x}+iβ_{p}p_{y}$) phases. The tri-critical point locates around $R_{c}k_{F}\sim1$, where $k_{F}$ is the Fermi wave vector. We further derive the Ginzburg-Landau theory to explain the phase diagram, and estimate…
In this paper, we study the effect of population imbalance and its interplay with pairing strength and lattice effect in atomic Fermi gases in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We compute various phase diagrams as the system undergoes BCS-BEC crossover, using the same pairing fluctuation theory as in Part I. We find widespread pseudogap phenomena beyond the BCS regime and intermediate temperature superfluid states for relatively low population imbalances. The Fermi surface topology plays an important role in the behavior of $T_\text{c}$. For large $d$ and/or small $t$, which yield an open Fer…
Recently a scheme has been proposed for generating the 2D Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold atomic bosons in a bilayer geometry [S.-W. Su et al, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{93}, 053630 (2016)]. Here we investigate the superfluidity properties of a degenerate Fermi gas affected by the SOC in such a bilayer system. We demonstrate that a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state appears in the regime of small to moderate atom-light coupling. In contrast to the ordinary SOC, the FFLO state emerges in the bilayer system without adding any external fields or spin polarization. As the …

We study the zero temperature phase diagram of an imbalanced bilayer of dipolar fermions. We consider perpendicularly aligned identical dipoles in two layers and investigate the effect of population imbalance on the ground state phase at different layer spacings and average densities. The attractive part of the interlayer interaction could lead to the BEC-BCS crossover and the Fermi surface mismatch between two layers results in interesting uniform and nonuniform superfluid phases, which we have investigated here using the BCS mean-field theory together with the superfluid-mass density criteri…
In this paper, we study an extended bosonic t-J model in an optical lattice, which describes two-component hard-core bosons with a nearest-neighbor (NN) pseudo-spin interaction, and also inter- and intra-species dipole-dipole interactions (DDI). In particular, we focus on the case in which two component hard-core bosons have anti-parallel polarized dipoles with each other. The global phase diagram is studied by means of the Gutzwiller variational method and also the quantum Monte-Carlo simulations (QMC). The both calculations show that a stripe solid order, besides a checkerboard one, appears …
We study the properties of a binary microcavity polariton superfluid coherently injected by two lasers. The crossover from the supersonic to subsonic regime, where motion is frictionless, is described by evaluating the Bogoliubov spectra. We show that according to the Landau criteria, the coupling between the two components precludes the existence of superfluidity just for one component but not for the other. By analysing the drag force exerted on a defect, we give a recipe to experimentally address the crossover from the supersonic to the subsonic regime.
We present measurements of spin transport in ultracold gases of fermionic lithium-6 in a mixture of two spin states at a Feshbach resonance. In particular, we study the spin dipole mode, where the two spin components are displaced from each other against a harmonic restoring force. We prepare a highly-imbalanced, or polaronic, spin mixture with a spin dipole excitation and observe strong, unitarity limited damping of the spin dipole mode. In gases with small spin imbalance, below the Pauli limit for superfluidity, we observe strongly damped spin flow despite the presence of a superfluid core.
Superfluidity and Bose-Einstein condensation are usually considered as two closely related phenomena. Indeed, in most macroscopic quantum systems, like liquid helium, ultracold atomic Bose gases, and exciton-polaritons, condensation and superfluidity occur in parallel. In photon Bose-Einstein condensates realized in the dye microcavity system, thermalization does not occur by direct interaction of the condensate particles as in the above described systems, i.e. photon-photon interactions, but by absorption and re-emission processes on the dye molecules, which act as a heat reservoir. Currently…
Fermionic superfluidity in atomic Fermi gases across a Feshbach resonance is normally described by the atom-molecule theory, which treats the closed channel as a noninteracting point boson. In this work we present a theoretical description of the resonant superfluidity in analogy to the two-band superconductors. We employ the underlying two-channel scattering model of Feshbach resonance where the closed channel is treated as a composite boson with binding energy $\varepsilon_0$ and the resonance is triggered by the microscopic interchannel coupling $U_{12}$. The binding energy $\varepsilon_0$ …
We study the quantum hydrodynamical features of exciton-polaritons flowing circularly in a ring-shaped geometry. We consider a resonant-excitation scheme in which the spinor polariton fluid is set into motion in both components by spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion. We show that this scheme allows to control the winding number of the fluid, and to create two circulating states differing by two units of the angular momentum. We then consider the effect of a disorder potential, which is always present in realistic nanostructures. We show that a smooth disorder is efficiently screened by…
