The separation dependence of the interaction between two resonant groups of CdSe/ZnS nanocrystallite quantum dots is studied at room temperature. A near-field scanning optical microscope is used to bring a group of mono-disperse ~6.5 nm diameter nanocrystallite quantum dots which are attached to the microscope probe, into close proximity of `~8.5 nm diameter group of nanocrystallite quantum dots which are deposited on a solid immersion lens. Information extracted from photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and absorption curves as well as numerical calculations of the energy levels, show that the third excited excitonic energy level of the large quantum dots nearly matches the ground excitonic energy level for the small quantum dots. Quenching of the small quantum dots photoluminescence signal has been observed as they approach the large quantum dots. On average, the separation between microscope probe and solid immersion lens changed in the 15-50 nm range. The transition probability between these two groups of quantum dots is calculated to be (2.60 x 10-47 m6)/R6, within the (0.70 x 10-47 m6)/R6 - (11.0 x 10-47 m6)/R6 experimentally obtained range of transition probabilities. The Förster radius, as a signature of energy transfer efficiency, is experimentally found to be in the 14-22 nm range.
Circularly polarized optical excitation is used to demonstrate the efficient injection of spin-polarized excitons to individual self-assembled CdSe quantum dots in ZnSe barrier. The exciton spin-transfer is studied by means of polarization-resolved single dot spectroscopy performed in magnetic field applied in Faraday configuration. Detailed analysis of the neutral exciton photoluminescence spectra reveals the presence of exciton spin relaxation during its lifetime in a quantum dot. This process is seen for both nonmagnetic dots and those containing single Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Taking this into acco…
We perform photoluminescence excitation measurements on individual CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal quantum dots (NCQDs) at room temperature to study optical transition energies and broadening. The observed features in the spectra are identified and compared to calculated transition energies using an effective mass model. The observed broadening is attributed to phonon broadening, spectral diffusion and size and shape inhomogeneity. The former two contribute the broadening transitions in individual QDs while the latter contributes to the QD-to-QD variation. We find that phonon broadening is often not the …
We present a polarization-resolved photoluminescence study of the exchange interaction effects in a prototype system consisting of an individual Fe2+ ion and a single neutral exciton confined in a CdSe/ZnSe quantum dot. Maximal possible number of eight fully linearly-polarized lines in the bright exciton emission spectrum is observed, evidencing complete degeneracy lifting in the investigated system. We discuss conditions required for such a scenario to take place: anisotropy of the electron-hole interaction and the zero-field splitting of the Fe2+ ion spin states. Neglecting of either of thes…
We present a detailed spectroscopic study of the photoluminescence quenching in an epitaxial structures containing CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots doped with low concentration of Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Our time-resolved and time-integrated experiments reveal the origin of the quenching observed in macro-photoluminescence studies of ensembles of such dots. We show that incorporation of even a few ions to an individual dot does not quench its luminescence effectively, although some fingerprints of expected spin-dependent quenching are visible. At the same time, the presence of Mn$^{2+}$ ions in the sample signi…
We present a magneto-optical study of individual self-assembled CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots doped with single Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Properties of the studied dots are analyzed analogously to more explored system of Mn-doped CdTe/ZnTe dots. Characteristic sixfold splitting of the neutral exciton emission line as well as its evolution in the magnetic field are described using a spin Hamiltonian model. Dynamics of both exciton recombination and Mn$^{2+}$ spin relaxation are extracted from a series of time-resolved experiments. Presence of a single dopant is shown not to affect the average excitonic lifetime…
Exciton luminescence of a CdSe quantum dot (QD) inserted in a ZnSe nanowire is strongly influenced by the dark exciton states. Because of the small size of these QDs (2-5nm), exchange interaction between hole and electron is highly enhanced and we measured large energy splitting between bright and dark exciton states ($ΔE\in [4, 9.2 ]$ meV) and large spin flip rates between these states. Statistics on many QDs showed that this splitting depends on the QD size. Moreover, we measured an increase of the spin flip rate to the dark states with increasing energy splitting. We explain this observatio…
The time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of single CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles, embedded in a PMMA layer is studied at room temperature. We observe a strong spectral jitter of up to 55 meV, which is correlated with a change in the observed linewidth. We evaluate this correlation effect using a simple model, based on the quantum confined Stark effect induced by a diffusing charge in the vicinity of the nanoparticle. This allows us to derive a mean distance between the center of the particle and the diffusing charge of approximately 3.3 nm on average, as well as a mean charge carrier …
We study the effect of Coulomb correlation on the emission properties of the ground state exciton in zincblende CdSe/ZnS core-shell and in wurtzite ZnO quantum dots. We validate our theory model by comparing results of computed exciton energies of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots to photoluminescence and scanning near-field optical microscopy measurements. We use that to estimate the diameter of the quantum dots using a simple model based on infinitely deep quantum well and compare the results with the statistics of the atomic force microscopy scans of CdSe/ZnS dots, obtaining excellent agreement. Therea…
The dephasing time of the lowest bright exciton in CdSe/ZnS wurtzite quantum dots is measured from 5 K to 170 K and compared with density dynamics within the exciton fine structure using a sensitive three-beam four-wave-mixing technique unaffected by spectral diffusion. Pure dephasing via acoustic phonons dominates the initial dynamics, followed by an exponential zero-phonon line dephasing of 109 ps at 5 K, much faster than the ~10 ns exciton radiative lifetime. The zero-phonon line dephasing is explained by phonon-assisted spin-flip from the lowest bright state to dark exciton states. This is…
The electron spin coherence in n-doped and undoped, self-assembled CdSe/Zn(S,Se) quantum dots has been studied by time-resolved pump-probe Kerr rotation. Long-lived spin coherence persisting up to 13 ns after spin orientation has been found in the n-doped quantum dots, outlasting significantly the lifetimes of charge neutral and negatively charged excitons of 350 - 530 ps. The electron spin dephasing time as long as 5.6 ns has been measured in a magnetic field of 0.25 T. Hyperfine interaction of resident electrons with a nuclear spin fluctuations is suggested as the main limiting factor for th…
Ultrafast transmission changes around the fundamental trion resonance are studied after exciting a p-shell exciton in a negatively charged II-VI quantum dot. The biexcitonic induced absorption reveals quantum beats between hot trion states at 133 GHz. While interband dephasing is dominated by relaxation of the P-shell hole within 390 fs, trionic coherence remains stored in the spin system for 85 ps due to Pauli blocking of the triplet electron. The complex spectro-temporal evolution of transmission is explained analytically by solving the Maxwell-Liouville equations. Pump and probe polarizatio…
The kinetics and thermodynamics of structural transformations under pressure depend strongly on particle size due to the influence of surface free energy. By suitable design of surface structure, composition, and passivation it is possible, in principle, to prepare nanocrystals in structures inaccessible to bulk materials. However, few realizations of such extreme size-dependent behavior exist. Here we show with molecular dynamics computer simulation that in a model of CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals the core high pressure structure can be made metastable under ambient conditions by tuning th…
Having already achieved near-unity quantum yields, with promising properties for light-emitting diode, lasing, and charge separation applications, colloidal core/shell quantum dots have great technological potential. The shell thickness and band alignment of the shell and core materials are known to influence the efficiency of these devices. In many such applications, a key to improving the efficiency requires a deep understanding of multiexcitonic states. Herein, we elucidate the shell thickness and band alignment dependencies of the biexciton Auger recombination lifetime for quasi-type-II Cd…
Coherent spin dynamics in colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) typically show two spin components with different Larmor frequencies, whose origin is an open question. We exploit the photocharging approach to identify their origin and find that surface states play a key role in the appearance of the spin signals. By controlling the photocharging with electron or hole acceptors, we show that the specific spin component can be enhanced by the choice of acceptor type. In core/shell CdSe/ZnS QDs, the spin signals are significantly weaker. Our results exclude the neutral exciton as the spin origin and …
We present a comparative study of two self-assembled quantum dot (QD) systems based on II-VI compounds: CdTe/ZnTe and CdSe/ZnSe. Using magneto-optical techniques we investigated a large population of individual QDs. The systematic photoluminescence studies of emission lines related to the recombination of neutral exciton X, biexciton XX, and singly charged excitons (X$^+$, X$^-$) allowed us to determine average parameters describing CdTe QDs (CdSe QDs): X-XX transition energy difference 12 meV (24 meV); fine-structure splitting $δ_{1}=$0.14 meV ($δ_{1}=$0.47 meV); $g$-factor $g=$2.12 ($g=$1.71…
A theory of the trion and biexciton in a nanowire (NW) in the framework of the effective-mass model using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is presented. We consider the formation of trions and biexcitons under the action of both the lateral confinement and the localization potential. The analytical expressions for the binding energy and eigenfunctions of the trion and biexciton are obtained and expressed by means of matrix elements of the effective one-dimensional cusp-type Coulomb potentials whose parameters are determined self-consistently by employing the same eigenfunctions of the confin…
The lattice mismatch strain field of core/multishell structures with spherical symmetry is modeled by a linear continuum elasticity approach. The effect of the strain on the energy structure and linear optical absorption in large core/shell/shell spherical semiconductor quantum dots is analyzed. Localization of the photoexcited carriers induced by coating is found to play an important role in explaining the optical stability of large CdSe/CdS/ZnS and ZnTe/ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots.
Colloidal core/shell InP/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs), recently produced using an improved synthesis method, have a great potential in life-science applications as well as in integrated quantum photonics and quantum information processing as single-photon emitters. Single-particle spectroscopy of 10-nm QDs with 3.2-nm cores reveals strong photon antibunching attributed to fast (70-ps) Auger recombination of multiple excitons. The QDs exhibit very good photostability under strong optical excitation. We demonstrate that the antibunching is preserved when the QDs are excited above the saturation inten…
The observed intermittent light emission from colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals has long been associated with Auger recombination assisted quenching. We test this view by observing transient emission dynamics of CdSe/CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals using time-resolved photon counting. The size and intensity dependence of the observed decay dynamics are inconsistent with the those expected from Auger processes. Moreover, the data suggests that in the `off' state the quantum dot cycles in a three-step process: photoexcitation, rapid trapping and subsequent slow nonradiative decay.
We present a direct experimental evidence of photo-ionized CdTe quantum dot core having luminescence "off" state at band-edge photo-excitation. We use the autocorrelation of fluorescence fluctuations from dilute colloidal solution of CdTe quantum dots in a diffraction limited detection volume to determine their photo-ionization probability. The ionization probability is in the same order of magnitude (\approx10-6) as the CdSe and CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots. Further, we measured the ionization/ neutralization rates (\approx104 s-1) after addition of β-mercaptanol and found that ionization…
Luminescence spectroscopy experiments were realized for single colloidal quantum dots CdSe/ZnS in a broad temperature range above room temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere. Broadening and shifts of spectra due to the temperature change as well as due to spectral diffusion processes were detected and analyzed. A linear correlation between the positions of maxima and the squared linewidths of the spectra was found. This dependence was explained by a model which takes into account the slow variation of the electron-phonon coupling strength.
Cd(Se,Te) Quantum Dots (QD) in ZnSe barrier typically exhibit a very high spectral density, which precludes investigation of single dot photoluminescence. We design, grow and study individual Cd(Se,Te)/ZnSe QDs of low spectral density of emission lines achieved by implementation of a Mn-assisted epitaxial growth. We find an unusually large variation of exciton-biexciton energy difference (3 meV $\leq$ $Δ\mathrm{E_{X-XX}}$ $\leq$ 26 meV) and of exciton radiative recombination rate in the statistics of QDs. We observe a strong correlation between the exciton-biexciton energy difference, exciton …
Polariton emission from optical cavities integrated with various luminophores has been extensively studied recently due to the wide variety of possible applications in photonics, particularly promising in terms of fabrication of low-threshold sources of coherent emission. Tuneable microcavities allow extensive investigation of the photophysical properties of matter placed inside the cavity by deterministically changing the coupling strength and controllable switching from weak to strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes. Here we demonstrate room temperature strong coupling of exciton transitio…
We have studied spectral diffusion of the photoluminescence of a single CdSe quantum dot inserted in a ZnSe nanowire. We have measured the characteristic diffusion time as a function of pumping power and temperature using a recently developed technique [G. Sallen et al, Nature Photon. \textbf{4}, 696 (2010)] that offers subnanosecond resolution. These data are consistent with a model where only a \emph{single} carrier wanders around in traps located in the vicinity of the quantum dot.
The near-field Coulomb interaction between a nano-emitter and a graphene monolayer results in strong Förster-type resonant energy transfer and subsequent fluorescence quenching. Here, we investigate the distance dependence of the energy transfer rate from individual, i) zero-dimensional CdSe/CdS nanocrystals and ii) two-dimensional CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanoplatelets to a graphene monolayer. For increasing distances $d$, the energy transfer rate from individual nanocrystals to graphene decays as $1/d^4$. In contrast, the distance dependence of the energy transfer rate from a two-dimensional nanoplatele…
We report an improved photosensitivity in few-layer tin disulfide (SnS2) field-effect transistors (FETs) following doping with CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs). The hybrid QD-SnS2 FET devices achieve more than 500 percent increase in the photocurrent response compared with the starting SnS2-only FET device and a spectral responsivity reaching over 650 A/W at 400 nm wavelength. The negligible electrical conductance in a control QD-only FET device suggests that energy transfer between QDs and SnS2 is the main mechanism responsible for the sensitization effect, which is consistent with the …
Semiconductor nanowires offer the possibility to grow high-quality quantum-dot heterostructures, and, in particular, CdSe quantum dots inserted in ZnSe nanowires have demonstrated the ability to emit single photons up to room temperature. In this paper, we demonstrate a bottom-up approach to fabricate a photonic fiberlike structure around such nanowire quantum dots by depositing an oxide shell using atomic-layer deposition. Simulations suggest that the intensity collected in our NA = 0.6 microscope objective can be increased by a factor 7 with respect to the bare nanowire case. Combining micro…
