This chapter is an introduction to the connection between random matrices and maps, i.e graphs drawn on surfaces. We concentrate on the one-matrix model and explain how it encodes and allows to solve a map enumeration problem.
A one-to-one correspondence is proved between the N-rooted ribbon graphs, or maps, with e edges and the (e-N+1)-loop Feynman diagrams of a certain quantum field theory. This result is used to obtain explicit expressions and relations for the generating functions of N-rooted maps and for the numbers of N-rooted maps with a given number of edges using the path integral approach applied to the corresponding quantum field theory.
Bauer and Itzykson showed that associated to each labeled map embedded on an oriented Riemann surface there was a group generated by a pair of permutations. From this result an algorithm may be constructed for enumerating labeled maps, and this construction is easily augmented to bin the numbers by the genus of the surface the map is embedded in. The results agree with the calculations of Harer and Zagier of 1-vertex maps; with those of Bessis, Itzykson, and Zuber of 4-valent maps; and with those of Ercolani, McLaughlin, and Pierce for $2ν$-valent maps. We then modify this algorithm to one whi…
A seminal technique of theoretical physics called Wick's theorem interprets the Gaussian matrix integral of the products of the trace of powers of Hermitian matrices as the number of labelled maps with a given degree sequence, sorted by their Euler characteristics. This leads to the map enumeration results analogous to those obtained by combinatorial methods. In this paper we show that the enumeration of the graphs embeddable on a given 2-dimensional surface (a main research topic of contemporary enumerative combinatorics) can also be formulated as the Gaussian matrix integral of an ice-type p…
We prove the equality of doubly refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices and of Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions using integral formulae originating from certain solutions of the quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation.
We introduce a systematic approach to express generating functions for the enumeration of maps on surfaces of high genus in terms of a single generating function relevant to planar surfaces. Central to this work is the comparison of two asymptotic expansions obtained from two different fields of mathematics: the Riemann-Hilbert analysis of orthogonal polynomials and the theory of discrete dynamical systems. By equating the coefficients of these expansions in a common region of uniform validity in their parameters, we recover known results and provide new expressions for generating functions as…
We consider planar maps with three boundaries, colloquially called pairs of pants. In the case of bipartite maps with controlled face degrees, a simple expression for their generating function was found by Eynard and proved bijectively by Collet and Fusy. In this paper, we obtain an even simpler formula for \emph{tight} pairs of pants, namely for maps whose boundaries have minimal length in their homotopy class. We follow a bijective approach based on the slice decomposition, which we extend by introducing new fundamental building blocks called bigeodesic triangles and diangles, and by working…
We compute the generating functions of a O(n) model (loop gas model) on a random lattice of any topology. On the disc and the cylinder, they were already known, and here we compute all the other topologies. We find that the generating functions (and the correlation functions of the lattice) obey the topological recursion, as usual in matrix models, i.e they are given by the symplectic invariants of their spectral curve.
We consider maps on genus-$g$ surfaces with $n$ (labeled) faces of prescribed even degrees. It is known since work of Norbury that, if one disallows vertices of degree one, the enumeration of such maps is related to the counting of lattice point in the moduli space of genus-$g$ curves with $n$ labeled points and is given by a symmetric polynomial $N_{g,n}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n)$ in the face degrees $2\ell_1, \ldots, 2\ell_n$. We generalize this by restricting to genus-$g$ maps that are essentially $2b$-irreducible for $b\geq 0$, which loosely speaking means that they are not allowed to possess …
We present a purely combinatorial solution of the problem of enumerating planar bicubic maps with hard particles. This is done by use of a bijection with a particular class of blossom trees with particles, obtained by an appropriate cutting of the maps. Although these trees have no simple local characterization, we prove that their enumeration may be performed upon introducing a larger class of "admissible" trees with possibly doubly-occupied edges and summing them with appropriate signed weights. The proof relies on an extension of the cutting procedure allowing for the presence on the maps o…

We study the enumeration of closed walks of given length and algebraic area on the honeycomb lattice. Using an irreducible operator realization of honeycomb lattice moves, we map the problem to a Hofstadter-like Hamiltonian and show that the generating function of closed walks maps to the grand partition function of a system of particles with exclusion statistics of order $g=2$ and an appropriate spectrum, along the lines of a connection previously established by two of the authors. Reinterpreting the results in terms of the standard Hofstadter spectrum calls for a mixture of $g=1$ (fermion) a…
Maps are polygonal cellular networks on Riemann surfaces. This paper analyzes the construction of closed form general representations for the enumerative generating functions associated to maps of fixed but arbitrary genus. The method of construction developed here involves a novel asymptotic symbol calculus for difference operators based on the relation between spectral asymptotics for Hermitian random matrices and asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials with exponential weights. These closed form expressions have a universal character in the sense that they are independent of the explicit vale…
We study the partition function from random matrix theory using a well known connection to orthogonal polynomials, and a recently developed Riemann-Hilbert approach to the computation of detailed asymptotics for these orthogonal polynomials. We obtain the first proof of a complete large N expansion for the partition function, for a general class of probability measures on matrices, originally conjectured by Bessis, Itzykson, and Zuber. We prove that the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion are analytic functions of parameters in the original probability measure, and that they are generatin…
We address the six vertex model on a random lattice, which in combinatorial terms corresponds to the enumeration of weighted 4-valent planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation. This problem was exactly, albeit non-rigorously solved by Ivan Kostov in 2000 using matrix integral techniques. We convert Kostov's work to a combinatorial argument involving functional equations coming from recursive decompositions of the maps, which we solve rigorously using complex analysis. We then investigate modular properties of the solution, which lead to simplifications in certain special cases. In part…
Using the diagrammatic approach to integrals over Gaussian random matrices, we find a representation for polynomial Lie group integrals as infinite sums over certain maps on surfaces. The maps involved satisfy a specific condition: they have some marked vertices, and no closed walks that avoid these vertices. We also formulate our results in terms of permutations, arriving at new kinds of factorization problems.
This article is a short review on the relationship between convergent matrix integrals, formal matrix integrals, and combinatorics of maps. We briefly summarize results developed over the last 30 years, as well as more recent discoveries. We recall that formal matrix integrals are identical to combinatorial generating functions for maps, and that formal matrix integrals are in general very different from convergent matrix integrals. Finally, we give a list of the classical matrix models which have played an important role in physics in the past decades. Some of them are now well understood, so…
We consider Boltzmann random triangulations coupled to the Ising model on their faces, under Dobrushin boundary conditions and at the critical point of the model. The first part of this paper computes explicitly the partition function of this model by solving its Tutte's equation, extending a previous result by Bernardi and Bousquet-Mélou to the model with Dobrushin boundary conditions. We show that the perimeter exponent of the model is 7/3 in contrast to the exponent 5/2 for uniform triangulations. In the second part, we show that the model has a local limit in distribution when the two comp…
We evaluate the configuration exponents of various ensembles of Hamiltonian paths drawn on random planar bicubic maps. These exponents are estimated from the extrapolations of exact enumeration results for finite sizes and compared with their theoretical predictions based on the KPZ relations, as applied to their regular counterpart on the honeycomb lattice. We show that a naive use of these relations does not reproduce the measured exponents but that a simple modification in their application may possibly correct the observed discrepancy. We show that a similar modification is required to rep…
Random matrices are used in fields as different as the study of multi-orthogonal polynomials or the enumeration of discrete surfaces. Both of them are based on the study of a matrix integral. However, this term can be confusing since the definition of a matrix integral in these two applications is not the same. These two definitions, perturbative and non-perturbative, are discussed in this chapter as well as their relation. The so-called loop equations satisfied by integrals over random matrices coupled in chain is discussed as well as their recursive solution in the perturbative case when the…
We discuss some natural maps from a unitary group U(n) to a smaller group U(n-m) (these maps are versions of the Livshic characteristic function). We calculate explicitly the direct images of the Haar measure under some maps. We evaluate some matrix integrals over classical groups and some symmetric spaces (values of the integrals are products of Gamma-functions). These integrals generalize Hua Loo Keng integrals. We construct inverse limits of unitary groups equipped with analogues of the Haar measure and evaluate some integrals over these inverse limits.
