We study a class of discrete-time quantum walks with inhomogeneous coins defined in [Y. Shikano and H. Katsura, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 82}, 031122 (2010)]. We establish symmetry properties of the spectrum of the evolution operator, which resembles the Hofstadter butterfly.
We introduce and study a class of discrete-time quantum walks on a one-dimensional lattice. In contrast to the standard homogeneous quantum walks, coin operators are inhomogeneous and depend on their positions in this class of models. The models are shown to be self-dual with respect to the Fourier transform, which is analogous to the Aubry-André model describing the one-dimensional tight-binding model with a quasi-periodic potential. When the period of coin operators is incommensurate to the lattice spacing, we rigorously show that the limit distribution of the quantum walk is localized at th…
Mathematical analysis on the existence of eigenvalues is essential because it is equivalent to the occurrence of localization, which is an exceptionally crucial property of quantum walks. We construct the method for the eigenvalue problem via the transfer matrix for space-inhomogeneous $n$-state quantum walks in one dimension with $n-2$ self-loops, which is an extension of the technique in a previous study (Quantum Inf. Process 20(5), 2021). This method reveals the necessary and sufficient condition for the eigenvalue problem of a two-phase three-state quantum walk with one defect whose time e…
Although quantum walks exhibit peculiar properties that distinguish them from random walks, classical behavior can be recovered in the asymptotic limit by destroying the coherence of the pure state associated to the quantum system. Here I show that this is not the only way: I introduce a quantum walk driven by an inhomogeneous, time-dependent coin operator, which mimics the statistical properties of a random walk at all time scales. The quantum particle undergoes unitary evolution and, in fact, the high correlation evidenced by the components of the wave function can be used to revert the outc…
We investigate a space-inhomogeneous discrete-time quantum walk in one dimension. We show that the walk exhibits localization by a path counting method.
Localization is a characteristic phenomenon of space-inhomogeneous quantum walks in one dimension, where particles remain localized around their initial position. The existence of eigenvalues of time evolution operators is a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of localization, and their associated eigenvectors are deeply related to the amount of localization, i.e., the probability that the walker stays around the starting position in the long-time limit. In a previous study by authors, the eigenvalues of two-phase quantum walks with one defect were studied using a transfer ma…
We study a natural construction of a general class of inhomogeneous quantum walks (namely walks whose transition probabilities depend on position). Within the class we analyze walks that are periodic in position and show that, depending on the period, such walks can be bounded or unbounded in time; in the latter case we analyze the asymptotic speed. We compare the construction to others in the existing literature. As an example we give a quantum version of a non-irreducible classical walk: the Polya Urn.
In quantum computation theory, quantum random walks have been utilized by many quantum search algorithms which provide improved performance over their classical counterparts. However, due to the importance of the quantum decoherence phenomenon, decoherent quantum walks and their applications have been studied on a wide variety of structures. Recently, a unified time-inhomogeneous coin-turning random walk with rescaled limiting distributions, Bernoulli, uniform, arcsine and semi-circle laws as parameter varies have been obtained. In this paper we study the quantum analogue of these models. We o…
We consider the two-state space-inhomogeneous coined quantum walk (QW) in one dimension. For a general setting, we obtain the stationary measure of the QW by solving the eigenvalue problem. As a corollary, stationary measures of the multi-defect model and space-homogeneous QW are derived. The former is a generalization of the previous works on one-defect model and the latter is a generalization of the result given by Konno and Takei (2015).
The discrete-time quantum walk (QW) is a quantum version of the random walk (RW) and has been widely investigated for the last two decades. Some remarkable properties of QW are well known. For example, QW has a ballistic spreading, i.e., QW is quadratically faster than RW. For some cases, localization occurs: a walker stays at the starting position forever. In this paper, we consider stationary measures of two-state QWs on the line. It was shown that for any space-homogeneous model, the uniform measure becomes the stationary measure. However, the corresponding result for space-inhomogeneous mo…
In this paper, we consider periodicity for space-inhomogeneous quantum walks on the cycle. For isospectral coin cases, we propose a spectral analysis. Based on the analysis, we extend the result for periodicity for Hadamard walk to some isospectral coin cases. For non-isospectral coin cases, we consider the the system that uses only one general coin at the origin and the identity coin at the other sites. In this case, we show that the periodicity of the general coin at the origin determines the periodicity for the whole system.
We treat three types of measures of the quantum walk (QW) with the spatial perturbation at the origin, which was introduced by [1]: time averaged limit measure, weak limit measure, and stationary measure. From the first two measures, we see a coexistence of the ballistic and localized behaviors in the walk as a sequential result following [1,2]. We propose a universality class of QWs with respect to weak limit measure. It is shown that typical spatial homogeneous QWs with ballistic spreading belong to the universality class. We find that the walk treated here with one defect also belongs to th…
We present an Ito's formula for the one-dimensional discrete-time quantum walk and give some examples including a Tanaka's formula by using the formula. Moreover we discuss integrals for the quantum walk.
We discuss the description of eigenspace of a quantum walk model $U$ with an associating linear operator $T$ in abstract settings of quantum walk including the Szegedy walk on graphs. In particular, we provide the spectral mapping theorem of $U$ without the spectral decomposition of $T$. Arguments in this direction reveal the eigenspaces of $U$ characterized by the generalized kernels of linear operators given by $T$.
For a quantum walk on a graph, there exist many kinds of operators for the discrete-time evolution. We give a general relation between the characteristic polynomial of the evolution matrix of a quantum walk on edges and that of a kind of transition matrix of a classical random walk on vertices. Furthermore we determine the structure of the positive support of the cube of some evolution matrix, which is said to be useful for isospectral problem in graphs, under a certain condition.
We study the localization properties, energy spectra and coin-position entanglement of the aperiodic discrete-time quantum walks. The aperiodicity is described by spatially dependent quantum coins distributed on the lattice, whose distribution is neither periodic (Bloch-like) nor random (Anderson-like). Within transport properties we identified delocalized/localized quantum walks mediated by a proper adjusting of aperiodic parameter. Both scenarios are studied by exploring typical quantities (inverse participation ratio and survival probability), as well as the energy spectra of an associated …
We study a discrete-time quantum walk (QW) on the line with a single phase at the origin which was introduced and studied by Wojcik et al.[1]. We call the model "Wojcik model" here. Konno et al.[2] investigated other types of QWs with one defect at the origin. They presented a method which gives the stationary measure corresponding to localization for the QWs by use of the generating functions splitted in positive and negative parts respectively. In this paper, we call the method "the splitted generating function method (the SGF method)". To clarify in detail which QW is appropriate for the me…
A recent paper on quantum walks by Childs et al. [STOC'03] provides an example of a black-box problem for which there is a quantum algorithm with exponential speedup over the best classical randomized algorithm for the problem, but where the quantum algorithm does not involve any use of the quantum Fourier transform. They give an exponential lower bound for a classical randomized algorithm solving the black-box graph traversal problem defined in their paper. In this note we give an improved lower bound for this problem via a straightforward and more complete analysis.
We report the position-inhomogeneous quantum walk (IQW) can be utilized to produce the maximal high dimensional entanglement while maintaining the quadratic speedup spread of the wave-function. Our calculations show that the maximal coin-walker entanglement can be generated in any odd steps or asymptotically in even steps, and the nearly maximal entanglement can be obtained in even steps after $2$. We implement the IQW by a stable resource-saving time-bin optical network, in which a polarization Sagnac loop is employed to realize the precisely tunable phase shift. Our approach opens up an effi…
In the note we show how the choice of the initial states can influence the evolution of time-averaged probability distribution of the quantum walk on even cycles.
