The Fermi LAT collaboration has recently presented constraints on the gamma-ray signal from annihilating dark matter using separate analyses of a number of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Since the expected annihilation signal has the same physical properties regardless of the target (except for a normalization scale), it is possible to enhance the constraining power using a combined analysis, the initial results of which will be presented here.
We study the abilities of the Fermi-LAT instrument on board of the Fermi mission to simultaneously constrain the Milky Way dark matter density profile and some dark matter particle properties, as annihilation cross section, mass and branching ratio into dominant annihilation channels. A single dark matter density profile is commonly assumed to determine the capabilities of gamma-ray experiments to extract dark matter properties or to set limits on them. However, our knowledge of the Milky Way halo is far from perfect, and thus in general, the obtained results are too optimistic. Here, we study…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies have a large mass to light ratio and low astrophysical background, and are therefore considered one of the most promising targets for dark matter searches in the gamma-ray band. By applying a joint likelihood analysis, the power of resultant limits in case of no detection can be enhanced and robust constraints on the dark matter parameter space can be obtained. We present results from a combined analysis of 10 dwarf spheroidal galaxies using Fermi-LAT data. Different annihilation channels have been analyzed and uncertainties from astrophysical properties have been tak…
Galactic magnetic field (GMF) and secondary cosmic rays (CRs) (e.g. $^{10}$beryllium, boron, antiproton) are important components to understand the propagation of CRs in the Milky Way Galaxy. Realistic modeling of GMF is based on the Faraday rotation measurements of various Galactic and extragalactic radio sources and synchrotron emission from CR leptons in the radio frequency range, thereby providing information of halo height. On the other hand, diffusion coefficient and halo height are also estimated from the $^{10}$Be/$^{9}$Be and B/C ratios. Moreover, density distribution of gaseous compo…
In the past decade, gamma-ray observations and radio observations of our Milky Way and the Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies put very strong constraints on annihilation cross sections of dark matter. In this article, we suggest a new target object (NGC 2976) that can be used for constraining annihilating dark matter. The radio and x-ray data of NGC 2976 can put very tight constraints on the leptophilic channels of dark matter annihilation. The lower limits of dark matter mass annihilating via $e^+e^-$, $μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^+τ^-$ channels are 200 GeV, 130 GeV and 110 GeV respectively wit…
We propose a novel method to constrain the Milky Way (MW) mass $M_{\rm vir}$ with its corona temperature observations. For a given corona density profile, one can derive its temperature distribution assuming a generalized equilibrium model with non-thermal pressure support. While the derived temperature profile decreases substantially with radius, the X-ray-emission-weighted average temperature, which depends most sensitively on $M_{\rm vir}$, is quite uniform toward different sight lines, consistent with X-ray observations. For an Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) total matter distribution, the coron…
We present a search for sterile neutrino dark matter decay signals in the Milky Way's dark matter halo by considering the entirety of the Swift-XRT data archive. After filtering the raw archive, we analyze a $\sim$77 Ms data set containing the full field of view, as well as a $\sim$41 Ms data set with point-sources excised using the Swift-XRT Point Source catalog. We report non-detections of emission lines across the 3--6 keV continuum in both data sets, including at and around 3.5 keV. The point-sources excised data set is found to have higher sensitivity to faint dark matter decay signals du…
We employ data from the recently observed high-energy neutrino events at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory to constrain interactions between the dark matter (DM) in the Milky Way and the neutrino sector. We construct an extended un-binned likelihood in order to explore the parameter space of allowed interactions. We present results in the specific case of a scalar DM candidate interacting via a scalar mediator, and show that due to the energy dependence of the interaction cross section, this approach can constrain the coupling more strongly than traditional cosmological probes for some regions …
Recent studies of radio data put strong constraints on annihilation cross section for dark matter. In this article, we provide the first analysis of using M33 radio data in constraining annihilating dark matter. The resulting constraints of annihilation cross sections for some channels are more stringent than that obtained from 6 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) gamma-ray observations of the Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies. In particular, the conservative lower limits of dark matter mass annihilating via $e^+e^-$, $μ^+μ^-$and $τ^+τ^-$ channels are 190 GeV, 120 GeV …
Observations of the TeV halos associated with nearby pulsars indicate that these objects inject significant fluxes of very high-energy electron-positrons pairs into the interstellar medium (ISM), thereby likely providing the dominant contribution to the cosmic-ray positron flux. In this paper, we use the cosmic-ray positron fraction as measured by the AMS-02 Collaboration to constrain the characteristics of the local pulsar population. For reasonable model parameters, we find that we can obtain good agreement with the measured positron fraction up to energies of $E_e \sim 300 \, {\rm GeV}$. At…
In the past few decades, observations indicated that an unexplained high production rate of positrons (the strong 511 keV line) exists in the Milky Way center. By using the fact that a large amount of high density gas used to exist near the Milky Way center million years ago, we model the rate of positrons produced due to dark matter annihilation. We consider the effect of adiabatic contraction of dark matter density due to the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way center and perform a detailed calculation to constrain the possible annihilation channel and dark matter mass range. We find th…
We show that the recently discovered binary 2M05215658+4359220 (2M0521), comprised of a giant star (GS) orbiting a suspected black hole (BH) in a ~80 day orbit, may be instrumental in shedding light on uncertain BH-formation physics and can be a test case for studying wind accretion models. Using binary population synthesis with a realistic prescription for the star formation history and metallicity evolution of the Milky Way, we analyze the evolution of binaries containing compact objects (COs) in orbit around GSs with properties similar to 2M0521. We find ~100-1000 CO-GS binaries in the Milk…
Satellite galaxies of the Milky Way are among the most promising targets for dark matter searches in gamma rays. We present a search for dark matter consisting of weakly interacting massive particles, applying a joint likelihood analysis to 10 satellite galaxies with 24 months of data of the Fermi Large Area Telescope. No dark matter signal is detected. Including the uncertainty in the dark matter distribution, robust upper limits are placed on dark matter annihilation cross sections. The 95% confidence level upper limits range from about 1e-26 cm^3 s^-1 at 5 GeV to about 5e-23 cm^3 s^-1 at 1 …
Recent advancements in the imaging of low-surface-brightness objects revealed numerous ultra-diffuse galaxies in the local Universe. These peculiar objects are unusually extended and faint: their effective radii are comparable to the Milky Way, but their surface brightnesses are lower than that of dwarf galaxies. Their ambiguous properties motivate two potential formation scenarios: the "failed" Milky Way and the dwarf galaxy scenario. In this paper, for the first time, we employ X-ray observations to test these formation scenarios on a sample of isolated, low-surface-brightness galaxies. Sinc…
If the gamma-ray excess from the galactic center reported by Fermi-LAT is a signal from annihilating dark matter, one must question why a similar excess has not been observed in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We use this observation to place constraints on the density profile of dwarf spheroidal galaxies under the assumption that the galactic center excess is in fact a signal from annihilating dark matter. We place constraints on the generalized NFW parameter $γ$ and the Einasto profile parameter $α$ which control the logarithmic slope of the inner regions of the halo's density profile. We determi…
Recent gamma-ray and radio observations provide stringent constraints for annihilating dark matter. The current $2σ$ lower limits of dark matter mass can be constrained to $\sim 100$ GeV for thermal relic annihilation cross section. In this article, we use the radio continuum spectral data of a nearby galaxy NGC4214 and differentiate the thermal contribution, dark matter annihilation contribution and cosmic-ray contribution. We can get more stringent constraints of dark matter mass and annihilation cross sections. The $5σ$ lower limits of thermal relic annihilating dark matter mass obtained ar…
We study the capabilities of the Fermi-LAT instrument on board of the Fermi mission to constrain particle dark matter properties, as annihilation cross section, mass and branching ratio into dominant annihilation channels, with gamma-ray observations from the galactic center. Besides the prompt gamma-ray flux, we also take into account the contribution from the electrons/positrons produced in dark matter annihilations to the gamma-ray signal via inverse Compton scattering off the interstellar photon background, which turns out to be crucial in the case of dark matter annihilations into mu+mu- …
Several nearby ultra-faint satellites of the Milky Way discovered by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) during the last few years are promising targets for indirect dark matter (DM) searches with very-high-energy (VHE, E$\gtrsim$100 GeV) gamma rays. The H.E.S.S. experiment has carried out an observational campaign in 2017 and 2018 towards a selection of the most promising DES dwarf satellites, accumulating a total observation time of about 80 hours. The individual datasets have been used to look for a DM signal in several annihilation channels. No significant VHE gamma-ray excess above the backgroun…
We compare the full-sky morphology of the 511 keV gamma ray excess measured by the INTEGRAL/SPI experiment to predictions of models based on dark matter (DM) scatterings that produce low-energy positrons: either MeV-scale DM that annihilates directly into e+e- pairs, or heavy DM that inelastically scatters into an excited state (XDM) followed by decay into e+e- and the ground state.By direct comparison to the data, we find that such explanations are consistent with dark matter halo profiles predicted by numerical many-body simulations for a Milky Way-like galaxy. Our results favor an Einasto p…
In the past decade, gamma-ray observations and radio observations put strong constraints on the parameters of dark matter annihilation. In this article, we suggest another robust way to constrain the parameters of dark matter annihilation. We expect that the electrons and positrons produced from dark matter annihilation would scatter with the cosmic microwave background photons and boost the photon energy to $\sim$ keV order. Based on the x-ray data from the Draco dwarf galaxy, the new constraints for some of the annihilation channels are generally tighter than the constraints obtained from 6 …
Most proposed dark matter candidates are stable and are produced thermally in the early Universe. However, there is also the possibility of unstable (but long-lived) dark matter, produced thermally or otherwise. We propose a strategy to distinguish between dark matter annihilation and/or decay in the case that a clear signal is detected in gamma-ray observations of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies with gamma-ray experiments. The sole measurement of the energy spectrum of an indirect signal would render the discrimination between these cases impossible. We show that by examining the dependen…
We use the recent measurement of the isotropic $γ$-ray background (IGRB) by Fermi LAT and analysis of the contribution of unresolved point $γ$-ray sources to IGRB to build constraints on the models of ultra-high cosmic rays (UHECR) origin. We also calculate the minimal expected diffuse $γ$-ray flux produced by UHECR interactions with an interstellar photon background. Finally, for the subclass of dark matter (DM) models with decaying weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP), we build constraints on the particle decay time using minimal expected contributions to the IGRB from unresolved poin…
We present a search for Galactic dark matter (DM) satellites using the Large Area Telescope (LAT). N-body simulations based on the Lambda-CDM model of cosmology predict a large number of as yet unobserved Galactic DM satellites. These satellites could potentially produce gamma rays through the self-annihilation of DM particles. Some DM satellites are expected to have hard gamma-ray spectra, finite angular extents, and a lack of counterparts at other wavelengths. We searched for LAT sources with these characteristics. We found no candidate DM satellites matching these criteria in one year of LA…
The dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) of the Milky Way are some of the most dark matter (DM) dominated objects known. We report on gamma-ray observations of Milky Way dSphs based on 6 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data processed with the new Pass 8 event-level analysis. None of the dSphs are significantly detected in gamma rays, and we present upper limits on the DM annihilation cross section from a combined analysis of 15 dSphs. These constraints are among the strongest and most robust to date and lie below the canonical thermal relic cross section for DM of mass $\lesssim$ 10…
As a basic characteristic of cosmic ray (CR) propagation, the diffusive halo can advance our understanding of many CR-related studies and indirect dark matter. The method to derive the halo size usually has degeneracy problems thus affected by large uncertainties. The diffusion gamma ray from high-latitude clouds might shed light on the halo size independently. Since the spatially dependent propagation (SDP) model has a better agreement with the observed CRs, compared with conventional propagation model, in this work, we investigate the halo thickness based on SDP model with Fermi-LAT $\rmγ$-r…
Past studies have identified a spatially extended excess of $\sim$1-3 GeV gamma rays from the region surrounding the Galactic Center, consistent with the emission expected from annihilating dark matter. We revisit and scrutinize this signal with the intention of further constraining its characteristics and origin. By applying cuts to the \textit{Fermi} event parameter CTBCORE, we suppress the tails of the point spread function and generate high resolution gamma-ray maps, enabling us to more easily separate the various gamma-ray components. Within these maps, we find the GeV excess to be robust…
With 91 months of the publicly available Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data, we analyze the gamma-ray emission from the Milky Way satellites to search for potential line signals due to the annihilation of dark matter particles into double photons. The searched targets include a sample of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). No significant line emission has been found neither in the stacked dwarf galaxy sample nor in the direction of LMC/SMC. The corresponding upper limits on the cross section of DM annihilation into two photons are derived. Compared …
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) has recently revealed a large population of gamma-ray emitting millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in our Galaxy. We aim to infer the properties of the Galactic population of gamma-ray emitting MSPs from the samples detected by the Fermi-LAT. We developed a Monte Carlo model to predict the spatial and gamma-ray luminosity distribution of the Galactic MSP population. Based on the estimated detection sensitivity of Fermi-LAT, we split the model population into detectable and undetectable samples of MSPs. Using a maximum likelihood method, we compared the detecta…
The angular extension of the gamma-ray image of 3C 279 may be constrained by studying its solar occultations as suggested by Fairbairn et al. (2010). We perform this kind of analysis for seven occultations observed by Fermi-LAT in 2008-2014, using the Fermi-LAT Solar System tools. The results are interpreted in terms of models with extended gamma-ray halo of 3C 279; first constraints on the size and the flux of the halo are reported.
Some of the heavy elements, such as gold and europium (Eu), are almost exclusively formed by the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). However, it is still unclear which astrophysical site between core-collapse supernovae and neutron star - neutron star (NS-NS) mergers produced most of the r-process elements in the universe. Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models can test these scenarios by quantifying the frequency and yields required to reproduce the amount of europium (Eu) observed in galaxies. Although NS-NS mergers have become popular candidates, their required frequency (or rate) …
