We consider the problem of jointly optimizing channel pairing, channel-user assignment, and power allocation, to maximize the weighted sum-rate, in a single-relay cooperative system with multiple channels and multiple users. Common relaying strategies are considered, and transmission power constraints are imposed on both individual transmitters and the aggregate over all transmitters. The joint optimization problem naturally leads to a mixed-integer program. Despite the general expectation that such problems are intractable, we construct an efficient algorithm to find an optimal solution, which incurs computational complexity that is polynomial in the number of channels and the number of users. We further demonstrate through numerical experiments that the jointly optimal solution can significantly improve system performance over its suboptimal alternatives.
This paper develops a framework to study multi-hop relaying in a vehicular network consisting of vehicles and Road Side Units (RSUs), and the effect of this relaying on the network coverage and the communication delay. We use a stochastic geometry model that consists of a combination of Poisson Line Process (PLP) and 1D Poisson Point Process (PPP) to reliably characterize the vehicular network layout and the locations of the vehicles and the RSUs. Using this model, we analyze the effect of the different network parameters on the coverage provided by the RSUs to the vehicles. Then, we investiga…
In this paper, we propose a comprehensive research over triple hop all-optical relaying free-space optical (FSO) systems in the presence of all main noise sources including background, thermal and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and by considering the effect of the optical degree-of- freedom (DoF). Using full CSI relaying, we derive the exact expressions for the noise variance at the destination. Then, in order to simplify the analytical expressions of full CSI relaying, we also propose and investigate the validity of different approximations over noise variance at the destination. …
In this paper, we study the problem of relaying a single bit of information across a series of binary symmetric channels, and the associated trade-off between the number of hops $m$, the transmission time $n$, and the error probability. We introduce a simple, efficient, and deterministic protocol that attains positive information velocity (i.e., a non-vanishing ratio $\frac{m}{n}$ and small error probability) and is significantly simpler than existing protocols that do so. In addition, we characterize the optimal low-noise and high-noise scaling laws of the information velocity, and we adapt o…
We study error exponents for the problem of relaying a message over a tandem of two channels sharing the same transition law, in particular moving beyond the 1-bit setting studied in recent related works. Our main results show that the 1-hop and 2-hop exponents coincide in both of the following settings: (i) the number of messages is fixed, and the channel law satisfies a condition called pairwise reversibility, or (ii) the channel is arbitrary, and a zero-rate limit is taken from above. In addition, we provide various extensions of our results that relax the assumptions of pairwise reversibil…
The use of Terahertz (THz) frequency bands for data transmissions between the core network and an access point can be promising for next generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop relaying for THz-RF wireless link for backhaul applications. Considering the $α-μ$ fading channel and a statistical model of pointing errors, we derive a novel closed-form expression of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the THz link, which is also valid for non-integer values of $μ$. Using the CDF, we derive analytical expressio…
In this era of 5G technology, the ever-increasing demands for high data rates lead researchers to develop hybrid satellite-terrestrial (HST) networks as a substitution to the conventional cellular terrestrial systems. Since an HST network suffers from a masking effect which can be mitigated by adopting the terrestrial relaying strategy, in this work, we focus on wireless multicasting through an HST relaying net-work (HSTRN) in which a satellite sends messages to multiple terrestrial nodes via multiple relays under the wiretapping efforts of multiple eavesdroppers. Our concern is to protect the…
The conventional LoRa system is not able to sustain long-range communication over fading channels. To resolve the challenging issue, this paper investigates a two-hop opportunistic amplify-and-forward relaying LoRa system. Based on the best relay-selection protocol, the analytical and asymptotic bit error rate (BER), achievable diversity order, coverage probability, and throughput of the proposed system are derived over the Nakagamim fading channel. Simulative and numerical results show that although the proposed system reduces the throughput compared to the conventional LoRa system, it can si…
In this paper, a cooperative protocol is investigated for a multi-hop network consisting of relays with buffers of finite size, which may operate in different communication modes. The protocol is based on the myopic decode-and-forward strategy, where each node of the network cooperates with a limited number of neighboring nodes for the transmission of the signals. Each relay stores in its buffer the messages that were successfully decoded, in order to forward them through the appropriate channel links, based on its supported communication modes. A complete theoretical framework is investigated…
Cooperative relaying is utilized as an efficient method for data communication in wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, sometimes due to the necessity of multi-hop relaying in such communication networks, it is challenging to guarantee the secrecy of cooperative transmissions when the relays may themselves be eavesdroppers, i.e., we may face with the untrusted relaying scenario where the relays are both necessary helpers and potential adversary. To obviate this issue, a new cooperative jamming scheme is proposed in this paper, in which the data can be confidential…
In this paper, the performance of a power domain downlink multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access system in dual-hop full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is investigated over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels by considering the channel estimation error and feedback delay. Particularly, in the investigated system, the base station equipped with multiple antennas transmits information to all mobile users by applying conventional transmit antenna selection/Alamouti-space-time block coding scheme with the help of a dedicated FD amplify-and-forward relay. The received signals at mobi…
We analyze a secure two-hop mixed radio frequency (RF) and underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The UWOC channel is modeled using a unified mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution to consider the combined effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on transmission characteristics. Both legitimate and eavesdropping RF channels are modeled using flexible $α-μ$ distributions. Specifically, we first derive both the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the received signa…
Optical wireless communication (OWC) over atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is a well-studied topic. Still, there is limited research on signal fading due to random fog in an outdoor environment for terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) direct link. We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) pointing errors, rand…
The performance of all-optical dual-hop relayed free-space optical communication systems is analytically studied and evaluated. We consider the case when the total received signal undergoes turbulence-induced channel fading, modeled by the versatile mixture-Gamma distribution. Also, the misalignment-induced fading due to the presence of pointing errors is jointly considered in the enclosed analysis. The performance of both amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying transmission is studied, when heterodyne detection is applied. New closed-form expressions are derived regarding some key…
In this paper, we consider a two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system, where the relay node is energy-constrained and harvests energy from the source node. In the literature, there are three main energy-harvesting (EH) protocols, namely, time-switching relaying (TSR), power-splitting (PS) relaying (PSR) and ideal relaying receiver (IRR). Unlike the existing studies, in this paper, we consider $α$-$μ$ fading channels. In this respect, we derive accurate unified analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity for the aforementioned protocols over independent but not identically distribut…
In this work, we provide a global framework analysis of a multi-hop relaying systems wherein the transmitter (TX) communicates with the receiver (RX) through a set of intermediary relays deployed either in series or in parallel. Regenerative based relaying scheme is assumed such as the repetition-coded decoded-and-forward (DF) wherein the decoding is threshold-based. To reflect a wide range of fading, we introduce the generalized $H$-function (also termed as Fox-$H$ function) distribution model which enables the modeling of radio-frequency (RF) fading like Weibull and Gamma, as well as the fre…
Terahertz (THz) frequency bands can be promising for data transmissions between the core network and access points (AP) for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop THz-RF wireless system where an AP facilitates data transmission between a core network and user equipment (UE). We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with an independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) fading model for THz and RF links using the $α$-$μ$ distribution, the THz link with pointing errors, and asymmetrical relay position. We derive a closed…
