Consider a rational projective curve C of degree d over an algebraically closed field k. There are n homogeneous forms g_1,...,g_n of degree d in B=k[x,y] which parameterize C in a birational, base point free, manner. We study the singularities of C by studying a Hilbert-Burch matrix phi for the row vector [g_1,...,g_n]. In the "General Lemma" we use the generalized row ideals of phi to identify the singular points on C, their multiplicities, the number of branches at each singular point, and the multiplicity of each branch.
Let p be a singular point on the parameterized planar curve C which corresponds to a generalized zero of phi. In the "Triple Lemma" we give a matrix phi' whose maximal minors parameterize the closure, in projective 2-space, of the blow-up at p of C in a neighborhood of p. We apply the General Lemma to phi' in order to learn about the singularities of C in the first neighborhood of p. If C has even degree d=2c and the multiplicity of C at p is equal to c, then we apply the Triple Lemma again to learn about the singularities of C in the second neighborhood of p.
Consider rational plane curves C of even degree d=2c. We classify curves according to the configuration of multiplicity c singularities on or infinitely near C. There are 7 possible configurations of such singularities. We classify the Hilbert-Burch matrix which corresponds to each configuration. The study of multiplicity c singularities on, or infinitely near, a fixed rational plane curve C of degree 2c is equivalent to the study of the scheme of generalized zeros of the fixed balanced Hilbert-Burch matrix phi for a parameterization of C.
Let $V$ be a projective hypersurface having only isolated singularities. We show that these singularities are weighted homogeneous if and only if the Koszul syzygies among the partial derivatives of an equation for $V$ are exactly the syzygies with a generic first component vanishing on the singular locus subscheme of $V$. This yields in particular a positive answer in this setting to a question raised by Morihiko Saito and the first author. Finally we explain how our result can be used to improve the listing of Jacobian syzygies of a given degree by a computer algebra system such as Singular,…
One describes those double structures on rational normal curves which are defined scheme theoretically by quadratic equations and have linear syzygies, generalizing this way the double line in the plane
Let U be a basepoint free four-dimensional subspace of the space of sections of O(2,1) on P^1 x P^1. The sections corresponding to U determine a regular map p_U: P^1 x P^1 --> P^3. We study the associated bigraded ideal I_U in k[s,t;u,v] from the standpoint of commutative algebra, proving that there are exactly six numerical types of possible bigraded minimal free resolution. These resolutions play a key role in determining the implicit equation of the image p_U(P^1 x P^1), via work of Buse-Jouanolou, Buse-Chardin, Botbol and Botbol-Dickenstein-Dohm on the approximation complex. In four of the…
We investigate the relations between the syzygies of the Jacobian ideal of the defining equation for a projective hypersurface $V$ with isolated singularities and the Torelli properties of $V$ (in the sense of Dolgachev-Kapranov). We show in particular that hypersurfaces with a small Tjurina numbers are Torelli in this sense. When $V$ is a plane curve, or more interestingly, a surface in $P^3$, we discuss the stability of the reflexive sheaf of logarithmic vector fields along $V$. A new lower bound for the minimal degree of a syzygy associated to a 1-dimensional complete intersection is also g…
One proves a far-reaching upper bound for the degree of a generically finite rational map between projective varieties over a base field of arbitrary characteristic. The bound is expressed as a product of certain degrees that appear naturally by considering the Rees algebra (blowup) of the base ideal defining the map. Several special cases are obtained as consequences, some of which cover and extend previous results in the literature.
We unveil in concrete terms the general machinery of the syzygy-based algorithms for the implicitization of rational surfaces in terms of the monomials in the polynomials defining the parametrization, following and expanding our joint article with M. Dohm. These algebraic techniques, based on the theory of approximation complexes due to J. Herzog, A, Simis and W. Vasconcelos, were introduced for the implicitization problem by J.-P. Jouanolou, L. Busé, and M. Chardin. Their work was inspired by the practical method of moving curves, proposed by T. Sederberg and F. Chen, translated into the lang…
We give sharp lower bounds for the degree of the syzygies involving the partial derivatives of a homogeneous polynomial defining a nodal hypersurface. The result gives information on the position of the singularities of a nodal hypersurface expressed in terms of defects or superabundances. The case of Chebyshev hypersurfaces is considered as a test for this result and leads to a potentially infinite family of nodal hypersurfaces having nontrivial Alexander polynomials.
Based on a recent result of Voisin [2001] we describe the last nonzero syzygy space in the linear strand of a canonical curve C of even genus g=2k lying on a K3 surface, as the ambient space of a k-2-uple embedded P^{k+1}. Furthermore the geometric syzygies constructed by Green and Lazarsfeld [1984] from g^1_{k+1}'s form a non degenerate configuration of finitely many rational normal curves on this P^{k+1}. This proves a natural generalization of Green's conjecture [1984], namely that the geometric syzygies should span the space of all syzygies, in this case.
We derive a set of polynomial and quasipolynomial identities for degrees of syzygies in the Hilbert series H(d^m;z) of nonsymmetric numerical semigroups S(d^m) of arbitrary generating set of positive integers d^m={d_1,...,d_m}, m\geq 3. These identities were obtained by studying together the rational representation of the Hilbert series H(d^m;z) and the quasipolynomial representation of the Sylvester waves in the restricted partition function W(s,d^m). In the cases of symmetric semigroups and complete intersections these identities become more compact.
The Betti numbers of a graded module over the polynomial ring form a table of numerical invariants that refines the Hilbert polynomial. A sequence of papers sparked by conjectures of Boij and Söderberg have led to the characterization of the possible Betti tables up to rational multiples---that is, to the rational cone generated by the Betti tables. We will summarize this work by describing the cone and the closely related cone of cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective space, and we will give new, simpler proofs of some of the main results. We also explain some of the applications o…
Parameterized algebraic curves and surfaces are widely used in geometric modeling and their manipulation is an important task in the processing of geometric models. In particular, the determination of the intersection loci between points, pieces of parameterized algebraic curves and pieces of algebraic surfaces is a key problem in this context. In this paper, we survey recent methods based on syzygies and blowup algebras for computing the image and the finite fibers of a curve or surface parameterization, more generally of a rational map. Conceptually, the main idea is to use elimination matri…
We start the study of reduced complex projective plane curves, whose Jacobian syzygy module has 3 generators. Among these curves one finds the nearly free curves introduced by the authors, and the plus-one generated line arrangements introduced by Takuro Abe. All the Thom-Sebastiani type plane curves, and more generally, any curve whose global Tjurina number is equal to a lower bound given by A. du Plessis and C.T.C. Wall, are 3-syzygy curves. Rational plane curves which are nearly cuspidal, i.e. which have only cusps except one singularity with two branches, are also related to this class of …
In this paper, we consider positively graded isolated non F-rational singularities (R,m) with d=dim R over the field K of positive characteristic. We give a representation of lower local cohomologies H^i_m(R) (i<d) in terms of tight closure and limit closure of certain type of parameters. As an application to isolated singularities, we show a relation between non-vanishing of the tight closure of zero in the highest local cohomology (0)^*_{H^d(R)} and non-vanishing of the cohomology H^{d-1}_m(R).
We explore connections between the approach of solving the rational interpolation problem via resolutions of ideals and syzygies with the standard method provided by the Extended Euclidean Algorithm. As a consequence, we obtain explicit descriptions for solutions of "minimal" degrees in terms of the degrees of elements appearing in the EEA. This allows us to describe the minimal degree in a $μ$-basis of a polynomial planar parametrization in terms of a "critical" degree arising in the EEA.
In this paper, we study the Rouquier dimension of the singularity category of a variety with rational singularity. We construct an upper bound for the dimension of $\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{sg}}(X)$ if $X$ has at worst rational singularities and $\dim X_{\mathrm{sing}} \leq 1$.
We examine some recent work of Phillip Griffith on étale covers and fibered products from the point of view of tight closure theory. While it is known that cyclic covers of Gorenstein rings with rational singularities are Cohen-Macaulay, we show this is not true in general in the absence of the Gorenstein hypothesis. Specifically, we show that the canonical cover of a $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein ring with rational singularities need not be Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper we introduce a notion of rational singularities associated to pairs $(X, \ba^t)$ where $X$ is a variety, $\ba$ is an ideal sheaf and $t$ is a nonnegative real number. We prove that most standard results about rational singularities extend to this context. We also show that some results commonly associated with log terminal pairs have analogs in this context, including results related to inversion of adjunction. A positive characteristic analogue of rational singularities of pairs is also defined and explored.
We give formulas and effective sharp bounds for the degree of multi-graded rational maps and provide some effective and computable criteria for birationality in terms of their algebraic and geometric properties. We also extend the Jacobian dual criterion to the multi-graded setting. Our approach is based on the study of blow-up algebras, including syzygies, of the ideal generated by the defining polynomials of the rational map. A key ingredient is a new algebra that we call the "saturated special fiber ring", which turns out to be a fundamental tool to analyze the degree of a rational map. We …
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $M$ be a $P$-module and $V$ be a $P$-stable closed subvariety of $M$. We show in this paper that if the varieties $V$ and $G\cdot M$ have rational singularities, and the induction functor $R^i\text{ind}_P^G(-)$ satisfies certain vanishing condition then the variety $G\cdot V$ has rational singularities. This generalizes the main result of Kempf in [Invent. Math., 37 (1976), no. 3]. As an application, we prove the property of having rational singular…
We give a canonical construction of a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay algebra for a domain of finite type over $\mathbb C$ by taking ultraproducts of absolute integral closures in positive characteristic. This yields a new tight closure characterization of rational singularities in characteristic zero.
We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.
Hankel determinantal rings, i.e., determinantal rings defined by minors of Hankel matrices of indeterminates, arise as homogeneous coordinate rings of higher order secant varieties of rational normal curves; they may also be viewed as linear specializations of generic determinantal rings. We prove that, over fields of characteristic zero, Hankel determinantal rings have rational singularities; in the case of positive prime characteristic, we prove that they are F-pure. Independent of the characteristic, we give a complete description of the divisor class groups of these rings, and show that ea…
We consider the parameterization ${\mathbf{f}}=(f_0,f_1,f_2)$ of a plane rational curve $C$ of degree $n$, and we want to study the singularities of $C$ via such parameterization. We do this by using the projection from the rational normal curve $C_n\subset \mathbb{P}^n$ to $C$ and its interplay with the secant varieties to $C_n$. In particular, we define via ${\mathbf{f}}$ certain 0-dimensional schemes $X_k\subset \mathbb{P}^k$, $2\leq k\leq (n-1)$, which encode all information on the singularities of multiplicity $\geq k$ of $C$ (e.g. using $X_2$ we can give a criterion to determine whether …
We prove several results about the behavior Du Bois singularities and Du Bois pairs in families. Some of these generalize existing statements about Du Bois singularities to the pair setting while others are new even in the non-pair setting. We also prove a new inversion of adjunction result for Du Bois and rational pairs. In the non-pair setting this asserts that if a family over a smooth base has a special fiber $X_0$ with Du Bois singularities and the general fiber has rational singularities, then the total space has rational singularities near $X_0$.
We utilize recent results of André and Gabber on the existence of weakly functorial integral perfectoid big Cohen-Macaulay (BCM) algebras to study singularities of local rings in mixed characteristic. In particular, we introduce a mixed characteristic BCM-variant of rational/$F$-rational singularities, of log terminal/$F$-regular singularities and of multiplier/test ideals of divisor pairs. We prove a number of results about these objects including a restriction theorem for perfectoid BCM multiplier/test ideals and deformation statements for perfectoid BCM-regular and BCM-rational singularitie…
We study the properties of F-rationality and F-regularity in multigraded rings and their diagonal subalgebras. The main focus is on diagonal subalgebras of bigraded rings: these constitute an interesting class of rings since they arise naturally as homogeneous coordinate rings of blow-ups of projective varieties. As a consequence of some of the results obtained here, it is shown that there exist standard bigraded hypersurfaces whose rings of invariants under torus actions have rational singularities, but are not of F-regular type. Another application is the construction of families of rings wi…
The main aim of this paper is to classify Ulrich ideals and Ulrich modules over two-dimensional Gorenstein rational singularities (rational double points) from a geometric point of view. To achieve this purpose, we introduce the notion of (weakly) special Cohen-Macaulay modules with respect to ideals, and study the relationship between those modules and Ulrich modules with respect to good ideals.
We study rational curves on algebraic varieties, especially on normal affine varieties endowed with a $\C^*$-action. For varieties with an isolated singularity, we show that the presence of sufficiently many rational curves outside the singular point strongly affects the character of the singularity. This provides an explanation of classical results due to H.A. Schwartz and G.H. Halphen on polynomial solutions of the generalized Fermat equation.
The aim of this paper is to study mixed multiplier ideals associated to a tuple of ideals in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. We are interested in the partition of the real positive orthant given by the regions where the mixed multiplier ideals are constant. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a mixed multiplier ideal determines its corresponding jumping wall and we provide an algorithm to compute all the constancy regions, and their corresponding mixed multiplier ideals, in any desired range.
The aim of this paper is to study jumping numbers and multiplier ideals of any ideal in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a multiplier ideal determines the next jumping number. This leads to an algorithm to compute sequentially the jumping numbers and the whole chain of multiplier ideals in any desired range. As a consequence of our method we develop the notion of jumping divisor that allows to describe the jump between two consecutive multiplier ideals. In particular we find a unique minimal jumping divisor that is s…
Take $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ any normal Noetherian domain, either local or $\mathbb{N}$-graded over a field. We study the question of when $R$ satisfies the uniform symbolic topology property (USTP) of Huneke, Katz, and Validashti: namely, that there exists an integer $D>0$ such that for all prime ideals $P \subseteq R$, the symbolic power $P^{(Da)} \subseteq P^a$ for all $a >0$. Reinterpreting results of Lipman, we deduce that when $R$ is a two-dimensional rational singularity, then it satisfies the USTP. Emphasizing the non-regular setting, we produce explicit, effective multipliers $D$, working…
We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obt…
