We study the resonant effects produced when a Feshbach dimer crosses a scattering continuum band of atoms in an optical lattice. We numerically obtain the exact spectrum of two particles in a one-dimensional lattice and develop an effective atom-dimer Hamiltonian that accurately captures resonant effects. The lattice-induced resonances lead to the formation of bound states simultaneously above and below the scattering continuum and significantly modify the curvature of the dimer dispersion relation. The nature of the atom-dimer coupling depends strongly on the parity of the dimer state leading to a novel coupling in the case of negative parity dimers. From the exact solutions we extract the dimer Wannier function from which we quantitatively determine the effective Hamiltonian parameters for a many-body description.
The entropy of the coexisting gas of ultra cold fermionic atoms and Bosonic molecular condensate confined in a magnetic trap has been calculated from equation of motion approaches. We have found that the entropy production depends not only to the Feshbach resonance and but also under certain limits to Rabi type oscillation and Bose Josephson junction type oscillation.
We investigate the role of squeezing interaction in inducing topological Bogoliubov excitations of a bosonic system. We introduce a squeezing transformation which is capable of reducing the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian to an effective non-interacting one with the spectra and topology unchanged. In the weak interaction limit, we apply the perturbation theory to investigate the squeezing-induced topological gap opening on bosonic Bogoliubov excitations and find that the squeezing interaction plays an equivalent role as a spin-orbit or Zeeman-like coupling in the effective Hamil…
We consider theoretically ultra-cold interacting bosonic atoms confined to a wire geometry and coupled to the field of an optical cavity. A spin-orbit coupling is induced via Raman transitions employing a cavity mode and a transverse running wave pump beam, the transition imprints a spatial dependent phase onto the atomic wavefunction. Adiabatic elimination of the cavity field leads to an effective Hamiltonian for the atomic degrees of freedom, with a self-consistency condition. We map the spin-orbit coupled bosonic wire to a bosonic ladder in a magnetic field, by discretizing the spatial dime…
Conventional wisdom is that increasing temperature causes quantum coherence to decrease. Using finite temperature perturbation theory and exact calculations for the strongly correlated bosonic Mott insulating state we show a practical counter-example that can be explored in optical lattice experiments: the short-range coherence of the Mott insulating phase can increase substantially with increasing temperature. We demonstrate that this phenomenon originates from thermally produced defects that can tunnel with ease. Since the near zero temperature coherence properties have been measured with hi…
We propose a new scheme for observing Josephson oscillations and macroscopic quantum self-trapping phenomena in a toroidally confined Bose-Einstein condensate: a dipolar self-induced Josephson junction. Polarizing the atoms perpendicularly to the trap symmetry axis, an effective ring-shaped, double-well potential is achieved which is induced by the dipolar interaction. By numerically solving the three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that coherent tunneling phenomena such as Josephson oscillations and quantum self-trapping can take place. The dynamics in the self-in…
In the present paper, we shall study effect of a random quenched external field for spin order and also multiple Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This system is realized by the cold atomic gases in an optical lattice. In particular, we are interested in the strong-repulsion region of two-component gases for which the bosonic t-J model is a good effective model. In the bosonic t-J model, a long-range order of the pseudo-spin and also BEC of atoms appear quite naturally as in the fermion t-J model for the high-temperature superconducting materials. Random Raman scattering between two internal s…
We show that for ultra-cold neutral bosonic atoms held in a three-dimensional periodic potential or optical lattice, a Hubbard model with dominant, attractive three-body interactions can be generated. In fact, we derive that the effect of pair-wise interactions can be made small or zero starting from the realization that collisions occur at the zero-point energy of an optical lattice site and the strength of the interactions is energy dependent from effective-range contributions. We determine the strength of the two- and three-body interactions for scattering from van-der-Waals potentials and …
We investigate the possibility of realizing supersolid quantum phases in bosonic Rydberg-excited quantum lattice gases in the presence of non-unitary processes, by simulating the dynamical evolution starting from initial preparation in non-dissipative equilibrium states. Within Gutzwiller theory, we first analyze the many-body ground-state of a bosonic Rydberg-excited quantum gas in a two dimensional optical lattice for variable atomic hopping rates and Rabi detunings. Furthermore, we perform time evolution of different supersolid phases using the Lindblad-master equation. With the inclusion o…
It was recently found that the information-to-work conversion in a quantum Szilard engine can be increased by using a working medium of bosons with attractive interactions. In the original scheme, the work output depends on the insertion and removal position of an impenetrable barrier that acts like a piston, separating the chambers of the engine. Here, we show that the barrier removal process can be made fully reversible, resulting in a full information-to-work conversion if we also allow for the interaction strength to change during the cycle. Hence, it becomes possible to reach the maximum …
We theoretically investigate the generation of microscopic atomic NOON states, corresponding to the coherent |N,0> + |0,N> superposition with N ~ 5 particles, via collective tunneling of interacting ultracold bosonic atoms within a symmetric double-well potential in the self-trapping regime. We show that a periodic driving of the double well with suitably tuned amplitude and frequency parameters allows one to substantially boost this tunneling process without altering its collective character. The time scale to generate the NOON superposition, which corresponds to half the tunneling time and w…
We study the dynamics of quantum bosonic waves confined in a one-dimensional tilted optical lattice. The bosons are under the action of an effective spatially localized nonlinear two-body potential barrier set in the central part of the lattice. This version of the Bose-Hubbard model can be realized in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, by means of localized Feshbach resonance, and in quantum optics, using an arrayed waveguide with selectively doped guiding cores. Our numerical analysis demonstrates that the central barrier induces anomalous quantum reflection of incident wave packets acting so…
We propose an experimental protocol to directly observe the Kondo effect by scattering ultracold atoms with spin-dependent interactions. We propose using an optical Feshbach resonance to engineer Kondo-type spin-dependent interactions in a system with ultracold $^6$Li and $^{87}$Rb gases. We calculate the momentum transferred from the $^{87}$Rb gas to the $^6$Li gas in a scattering experiment and show that it has a logarithmically enhanced temperature dependence, characteristic of the Kondo effect and analogous to the resistivity of alloys with magnetic impurities. Experimentally detecting thi…
We study the interplay between the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential and that of an optical cavity mode. The cavity field is superimposed to the double-well potential and affects the atomic tunneling processes. The cavity field is driven by a laser red detuned from the bare cavity resonance; the dynamically changing spatial distribution of the atoms can shift the cavity in and out of resonance. At resonance the photon number is hugely enhanced and the atomic tunneling becomes amplified. The Josephson junction equations are revisited and the phase diagram is calc…
By means of a temporal-periodic modulation of the s-wave scattering length, a procedure to control the evolution of an initial atomic coherent state associated with a Bosonic Josephson junction is presented. The scheme developed has a remarkable advantage of avoiding the quantum collapse of the state due to phase and number diffusion. This kind of control could prove useful for atom interferometry using BECs, where the interactions limit the evolution time stage within the interferometer, and where the modulation can be induced via magnetic Feshbach resonances as recently experimentally demons…
We investigate the dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate which is governed by an optically induced non-Abelian gauge potential. Using a ring shaped trap to confine the atoms and a hydrodynamic ansatz, nonlinear Josephson type equations are found to describe the system. The degenerate eigenstates which show rotation are solved exactly. We consider a homogenous filled ring and observe population dynamics between the two quasi-spin components but also space dependent Josephson oscillations. Stable mass currents can be observed which are induced by the constant non-Abelian effective magnet…
We analyze d-wave resonances in atom-atom scattering in the presence of harmonic confinement by employing a higher partial wave pseudopotential. Analytical results for the scattering amplitude and transmission are obtained and compared to corresponding numerical ones, which employ the Lennard-Jones potential. Qualitative agreement is observed for weak confinement. For strong confinement the pseudopotential does not capture the s- and d-wave interference phenomena yielding an asymmetric Fano profile for the transmission resonance.
We analyze the uniform system of weakly interacting bosonic gas undergoing periodic oscillation of interaction constant. This, within Bogoliubov approximation, leads to creation of atom pairs with well defined opposite velocities. We show how interaction between quasiparticles, omitted in the Bogoliubov approximation, significantly changes the atom pair creation process and properties of scattered atoms.
We explore the properties of weakly bound bosonic states in the strongly interacting regime. Combining a correlated-Gaussian (CG) basis set expansion with a complex scaling method, we extract the energies and structural properties of bosonic cluster states with $N\le6$ for different two-body potentials. The identification of five- and six-body resonances attached to an excited Efimov trimer provides strong support to the premise of Efimov universality in bosonic systems. Our study also reveals a rich structure of bosonic cluster states. Besides the lowest cluster states which behave as bosonic…
We study a two-component Bose gas with artificial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which couples the center-of-mass momentum of atom to its internal states. We show that in this system resonance can be induced by tuning SOC strength. With a two-dimensional SOC, resonances in two scattering channels can be induced by tuning the aspect ratio of SOC strengths. With a three-dimensional SOC, resonance in all scattering channels can be induced by tuning the appropriate SOC strength. Similarly, we also find that in a Fermi gas with two- or three-dimensional SOC resonance can be induced by tuning SOC strengt…
We have created a triply quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{41}$K and two fermionic species $^{40}$K and $^6$Li. The boson is shown to be an efficient coolant for the two fermions, spurring hopes for the observation of fermionic superfluids with imbalanced masses. We observe multiple heteronuclear Feshbach resonances, in particular a wide s-wave resonance for the combination $^{41}$K-$^{40}$K, opening up studies of strongly interacting {\it isotopic} Bose-Fermi mixtures. For large imbalance, we enter the polaronic regime of dressed impurities immersed in a bosonic or fermionic bath.
Motivated by recent advance in orbitally tuned Feshbach resonance experiments, we analyze the ground-state phase diagram and related low-energy excitation spectra of a d-wave interacting Bose gas. A two-channel model with d-wave symmetric interactions and background s-wave interactions is adopted to characterize the gas. The ground state is found to show three interesting phases: atomic, molecular, and atomic-molecular superfluidity. Remarkably differently from what was previously known in the p-wave case, the atomic superfluid is found to be momentum-independent in the present d-wave case. Bo…
We report the observation of resonance-like loss in the trap population of ultracold dysprosium as a function of magnetic field, which we attribute to anisotropy-induced Fano-Feshbach resonances arising from Dy's large magnetic dipole moment and nonzero electronic orbital angular momentum. We recorded these resonances for four different isotopes, three bosonic and one fermionic, over a field range of 0-6 G and show that the number of resonances changes significantly as a function of temperature, even in the nK regime. Most of the observed resonances are of very narrow width. The fermionic isot…
We investigate the confinement induced resonance in spin-orbit coupled cold atoms with Raman coupling. We find that the quasi-bound levels induced by the spin-orbit coupling and Raman coupling result in the Feshbach-type resonances. For sufficiently large Raman coupling, the bound states in one dimension exist only for sufficiently strong attractive interaction. Furthermore, the bound states in quasi-one dimension exist only for sufficient large ratio of the length scale of confinement to three dimensional s-wave scattering length. The Raman coupling substantially changes the confinement-induc…
The quantum dynamics of interacting bosons in a one-dimensional system is investigated numerically. We consider dissipative and conservative two-particle interactions, and integrate the master equation describing the system dynamics via a time-evolving block-decimation (TEBD) algorithm. Our numerical simulations directly apply to stationary-light polaritons in systems where atoms and photons are confined to the hollow core of a photonic crystal fibre. We show that a two-particle loss term can drive an initially uncorrelated state into a regime where correlations effectively inhibit the dissipa…
We demonstrate that an ultracold many-body bosonic ensemble confined in a one-dimensional (1D) double-well (DW) potential can exhibit chaotic dynamics due to the presence of a single impurity. The non-equilibrium dynamics is triggered by a quench of the impurity-Bose interaction and is illustrated via the evolution of the population imbalance for the bosons between the two wells. While the increase of the post-quench interaction strength always facilitates the irregular motion for the bosonic population imbalance, it becomes regular again when the impurity is initially populated in the highly …
We investigate the possibility to control the s-wave scattering length for the interaction between cold bosonic atoms by using a microwave field. Our scheme applies to any atomic species with a ground state that is split by hyperfine interaction. We discuss more specifically the case of alkali-metal atoms and calculate the change in the scattering length for 7Li, 23Na, 41K, 87Rb, and 133Cs. Our results yield optimistic prospects for experiments with the four latter species.
We analyze the emergence of Shapiro resonances in tunnel-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, realizing a bosonic Josephson junction. Our analysis is based on an experimentally relevant implementation using magnetic double well potentials on an atomchip. In this configuration the potential bias (implementing the junction voltage) and the potential barrier (realizing the Josephson link) are intrinsically coupled. We show that the dynamically driven system exhibits significantly enhanced Shapiro resonances which will facilitate experimental observation. To describe the systems response to the dyna…
It is well known that the supersolid form of matter can arise in a single species of cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to long range interactions. We present a scenario where a supersolid is induced in one of the components of a mixture of two species bosonic atoms where there is no long range interactions. We study a system of normal and hardcore boson mixture with only the former possessing long range interactions. We consider three cases: the first where the total density is commensurate and the other two where they are incommensurate . By suitable choices of the densities and th…
When two atoms interact in the presence of an anharmonic potential, such as an optical lattice, the center of mass motion cannot be separated from the relative motion. In addition to generating a confinement-induced resonance (or shifting the position of an existing Feshbach resonance), the external potential changes the resonance picture qualitatively by introducing new resonances where molecular excited center of mass states cross the scattering threshold. We demonstrate the existence of these resonances, give their quantitative characterization in an optical superlattice, and propose an exp…
A dipolar condensate confined in a toroidal trap constitutes a self-induced Josepshon junction when the dipoles are oriented perpendicularly to the trap symmetry axis and the s-wave scattering length is small enough. The ring-shaped double-well potential coming from the anisotropic character of the mean-field dipolar interaction is robust enough to sustain self-trapping dynamics, which takes place when the initial population imbalance between the two wells is large. We show that in this system the self-trapping regime is directly related to a vortex-induced phase-slip dynamics. A vortex and an…
We study atom-atom scattering in quasi-one-dimensional geometries with transverse anisotropy. By assuming an s-wave pseudo-potential of contact interaction, we show that the system would exhibit a single confinement-induced resonance, where the scattering process degenerates to a total reflection as a one-dimensional gas of impenetrable bosons. For a general form of interaction, we present a formal calculation based on the two-channel model and conclude the existence of only one confinement-induced resonance. Our findings are inconsistent with a recent experiment by Haller et al. [Phys. Rev. L…
We report on the engineering of a non-dispersive (flat) energy band in a geometrically frustrated lattice of micro-pillar optical cavities. By taking advantage of the non-hermitian nature of our system, we achieve bosonic condensation of exciton-polaritons into the flat band. Due to the infinite effective mass in such band, the condensate is highly sensitive to disorder and fragments into localized modes reflecting the elementary eigenstates produced by geometric frustration. This realization offers a novel approach to studying coherent phases of light and matter under the controlled interplay…
Induced interactions and bound states of charge carriers immersed in a quantum medium are crucial for the investigation of quantum transport. Ultracold atom-ion systems can provide a convenient platform for studying this problem. Here, we investigate the static properties of one and two ionic impurities in a bosonic bath using quantum Monte Carlo methods. We identify three bipolaronic regimes depending on the strength of the atom-ion potential and the number of its two-body bound states: a perturbative regime resembling the situation of a pair of neutral impurities, a non-perturbative regime t…
We unravel the ground state properties and the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two bosonic impurities immersed in an one-dimensional fermionic environment by applying a quench of the impurity-medium interaction strength. In the ground state, the impurities and the Fermi sea are phase-separated for strong impurity-medium repulsions while they experience a localization tendency around the trap center for large attractions. We demonstrate the presence of attractive induced interactions mediated by the host for impurity-medium couplings of either sign and analyze the competition between induce…
We study the influence of photons on the dynamics and the ground state of the atoms in a Bosonic Josephson junction inside an optical resonator. The system is engineered in such a way that the atomic tunneling can be tuned by changing the number of photons in the cavity. In this setup the cavity photons are a new means of control, which can be utilized both in inducing self-trapping solutions and in driving the crossover of the ground state from an atomic coherent state to a Schrödinger's cat state. This is achieved, for suitable setup configurations, with interatomic interactions weaker than …
Bosonic atom-trimer scattering is studied in the unitary limit using momentum-space equations for four-particle transition operators. The impact of the Efimov effect on the atom-trimer scattering observables is explored and a number of universal relations is established. Positions and widths of tetramer resonances are determined. Trimer relaxation rate constant is calculated.
The newly discovered valley degree of freedom in atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) offers a promising platform to explore rich nonlinear physics, such as spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and novel valleytronics applications. However, the critical nonlinear effect, such as valley polariton bosonic stimulation, has long remained an unresolved challenge due to the generation of limited polariton ground state densities necessary to induce the stimulated scattering of polaritons in specific valleys. Here, we report the self-induced valley bosonic stimulatio…
Using new experimental measurements of photoassociation resonances near the $^1\mathrm{S}_0 \rightarrow \phantom{ }^3\mathrm{P}_1$ intercombination transition in $^{84}$Sr and $^{86}$Sr, we present an updated study into the mass-scaling behavior of bosonic strontium dimers. A previous mass-scaling model [Borkowski et al., Phys. Rev. A 90, 032713 (2014)] was able to incorporate a large number of photoassociation resonances for $^{88}$Sr, but at the time only a handful of resonances close to the dissociation limit were known for $^{84}$Sr and $^{86}$Sr. In this work, we perform a more thorough m…
We analyze the impact of multichannel scattering in harmonic waveguides on the positions and widths of confinement-induced resonances for both isotropic and anisotropic transversal confinement. Multichannel scattering amplitudes and transmission coefficients are calculated and used to characterize the resonant behaviour of atomic collisions with varying anisotropy. A mechanism is established which leads to a splitting of the confinement-induced resonance in the presence of anisotropy.
We study the phase transitions of bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQ…
We report on the observation of confinement-induced resonances in strongly interacting quantum-gas systems with tunable interactions for one- and two-dimensional geometry. Atom-atom scattering is substantially modified when the s-wave scattering length approaches the length scale associated with the tight transversal confinement, leading to characteristic loss and heating signatures. Upon introducing an anisotropy for the transversal confinement we observe a splitting of the confinement-induced resonance. With increasing anisotropy additional resonances appear. In the limit of a two-dimensiona…
In order to study the interplay between localized and dispersive orbital states in a system of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, we investigate the possibility to coherently couple the lowest two Bloch bands by means of resonant periodic forcing. Considering bosons in one dimension, it is shown that a strongly interacting Floquet system can be realized, where at every lattice site two (and only two) near-degenerate orbital states are relevant. By smoothly tuning both states into resonance we find that the system can undergo an orbital-driven Mott-insulator-to-superfluid transition. As an …
A theoretical model is presented describing the confinement-induced resonances observed in the recent loss experiment of Haller et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 153203 (2010)]. These resonances originate from possible molecule formation due to the coupling of center-of-mass and relative motion. A corresponding model is verified by ab initio calculations and predicts the resonance positions in 1D as well as in 2D confinement in agreement with the experiment. This resolves the contradiction of the experimental observations to previous theoretical predictions.
We study the role of bath-induced correlations in temperature estimation of cold bosonic baths. Our protocol includes multiple probes, that are not interacting, nor are they initially correlated to each other. They interact with a bosonic sample and reach a nonthermal steady state, which is measured to estimate the temperature of the sample. It is well known that in the steady state such noninteracting probes may get correlated to each other and even entangled. Nonetheless, the impact of these correlations in metrology has not been deeply investigated yet. Here, we examine their role for therm…
Since the discovery of superfluidity in He4 and Landau's phenomenological theory, the relationship between Bose condensation and superfluidity has been intensely debated. He4 is known by now to be both superfluid and condensed at low temperature, and more generally, in dimension D\geq2, all superfluid bosonic models realized in experiments are condensed in their ground-state, the most recent example being provided by ultracold bosonic atoms trapped in an optical lattice. In this paper, it is shown that a 2D gas of bosons which is not condensed at T=0 can be achieved by populating a layer throu…
We study the ground state properties and nonequilibrium dynamics of two spinor bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional bosonic gas upon applying an interspecies interaction quench. For the ground state of two non-interacting impurities we reveal signatures of attractive induced interactions in both cases of attractive or repulsive interspecies interactions, while a weak impurity-impurity repulsion forces the impurities to stay apart. Turning to the quench dynamics we inspect the time-evolution of the contrast unveiling the existence, dynamical deformation and the orthogonality catastr…
Although highly successful, the Truncated Wigner Approximation (TWA) does not account for genuine many-body quantum interference between different solutions of the mean-field equations of a bosonic many-body (MB) system. This renders the TWA essentially classical, where a large number of particles formally takes the role of the inverse of Planck's constant $\hbar$. The failure to describe genuine interference phenomena, such as localization and scarring in Fock space, can be seen as a virtue of this quasiclassical method, which thereby allows one to identify genuine quantum effects when being …
In contrast to the fully projective limit of strong quantum measurement, where the evolution is locked to a small subspace (quantum Zeno dynamics), or even frozen completely (quantum Zeno effect), the weak non-projective measurement can effectively compete with standard unitary dynamics leading to nontrivial effects. Here we consider global weak measurement addressing collective variables, thus preserving quantum superpositions due to the lack of which path information. While for certainty we focus on ultracold atoms, the idea can be generalized to other multimode quantum systems, including va…
Trapping ultracold atoms in optical lattices enabled numerous breakthroughs uniting several disciplines. Coupling these systems to quantized light leads to a plethora of new phenomena and has opened up a new field of study. Here we introduce a physically novel source of competition in a many-body strongly correlated system: We prove that quantum backaction of global measurement is able to efficiently compete with intrinsic short-range dynamics of an atomic system. The competition becomes possible due to the ability to change the spatial profile of a global measurement at a microscopic scale co…
