Implicit particle filters for data assimilation generate high-probability samples by representing each particle location as a separate function of a common reference variable. This representation requires that a certain underdetermined equation be solved for each particle and at each time an observation becomes available. We present a new implementation of implicit filters in which we find the solution of the equation via a random map. As examples, we assimilate data for a stochastically driven Lorenz system with sparse observations and for a stochastic Kuramoto-Sivashinski equation with observations that are sparse in both space and time.
In this paper, we develop a drift homotopy implicit particle filter method. The methodology of our approach is to adopt the concept of drift homotopy in the resampling procedure of the particle filter method for solving the nonlinear filtering problem, and we introduce an implicit particle filter method to improve the efficiency of the drift homotopy resampling procedure. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our drift homotopy implicit particle filter.
This work studies shape filtering techniques, namely the convolution-based (explicit) and the PDE-based (implicit), and introduces an implicit bulk-surface filtering method to control the boundary smoothness and preserve the internal mesh quality simultaneously in the course of bulk (solid) shape optimization. To that end, volumetric mesh is filtered by the solution of pseudo-solid governing equations which are stiffened by the mesh-Jacobian and endowed with the Robin boundary condition which involves the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the mesh boundaries. Its superior performance from the non-s…
New methodologies are designed to reduce the time complexity of an implicit discrete-time differentiator and the simulation time to implement it. They rely on Horner's method and the Shaw-Traub algorithm. The algorithms are compared for differentiators of orders 3, 7, and 10. The Half-Horner and Full-Horner methods showed the best performance and time complexity.
Stability is an important aspect of numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws and has received much interest. However, continuity in time is often assumed and only semidiscrete stability is studied. Thus, it is interesting to investigate the influence of explicit and implicit time integration methods on the stability of numerical schemes. If an explicit time integration method is applied, spacially stable numerical schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws can result in unstable fully discrete schemes. Focusing on the explicit Euler method (and convex combinations thereof), undesired t…
Time integration methods for solving initial value problems are an important component of many scientific and engineering simulations. Implicit time integrators are desirable for their stability properties, significantly relaxing restrictions on timestep size. However, implicit methods require solutions to one or more systems of nonlinear equations at each timestep, which for large simulations can be prohibitively expensive. This paper introduces a new family of linearly implicit multistep methods (LIMM), which only requires the solution of one linear system per timestep. Order conditions and …
We present an implementation of a fully stage-parallel preconditioner for Radau IIA type fully implicit Runge--Kutta methods, which approximates the inverse of $A_Q$ from the Butcher tableau by the lower triangular matrix resulting from an LU decomposition and diagonalizes the system with as many blocks as stages. For the transformed system, we employ a block preconditioner where each block is distributed and solved by a subgroup of processes in parallel. For combination of partial results, we either use a communication pattern resembling Cannon's algorithm or shared memory. A performance mode…
For reconstructing large tomographic datasets fast, filtered backprojection-type or Fourier-based algorithms are still the method of choice, as they have been for decades. These robust and computationally efficient algorithms have been integrated in a broad range of software packages. The continuous mathematical formulas used for image reconstruction in such algorithms are unambiguous. However, variations in discretisation and interpolation result in quantitative differences between reconstructed images, and corresponding segmentations, obtained from different software. This hinders reproducib…

This paper presents the generalized formulations of fundamental schemes for efficient unconditionally stable implicit finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. The fundamental schemes constitute a family of implicit schemes that feature similar fundamental updating structures, which are in simplest forms with most efficient right-hand sides. The formulations of fundamental schemes are presented in terms of generalized matrix operator equations pertaining to some classical splitting formulae, including those of alternating direction implicit, locally one-dimensional and split-step schemes. …
In this paper, we propose a hybrid parallel programming approach for a numerical solution of a two-dimensional acoustic wave equation using an implicit difference scheme for a single computer. The calculations are carried out in an implicit finite difference scheme. First, we transform the differential equation into an implicit finite-difference equation and then using the ADI method, we split the equation into two sub-equations. Using the cyclic reduction algorithm, we calculate an approximate solution. Finally, we change this algorithm to parallelize on GPU, GPU+OpenMP, and Hybrid (GPU+OpenM…
