A number of binary systems present evidence of enhanced activity around periastron passage, suggesting a connection between tidal interactions and these periastron effects. The aim of this investigation is to study the time-dependent response of a star's surface as it is perturbed by a binary companion. We derive expressions for the rate of dissipation, $\dot{E}$, of the kinetic energy by the viscous flows driven by tidal interactions on the surface layer. The method is tested by comparing the results from a grid of model calculations with the analytical predictions of Hut (1981) and the synchronization timescales of Zahn (1977, 2008). Our results for the orbital cycle averaged energy dissipation on orbital separation are consistent with those of Hut for model binaries with orbital separations at periastron >8 stellar radii. The model also reproduces the predicted pseudo-synchronization angular velocity for moderate eccentricities and the same scaling of synchronization timescales for circular orbits with separation as given by Zahn. The computations gives the distribution of $\dot{E}$ over the stellar surface, and show that it is generally concentrated at the equatorial latitude, with maxima generally located around four clearly defined longitudes, corresponding to the fastest azimuthal velocity perturbations. Maximum amplitudes occur around periastron passage or slightly thereafter for supersynchronously rotating stars. In very eccentric binaries, the distribution of $\dot{E}$ over the surface changes significantly as a function of orbital phase, with small spatial structures appearing after periastron. An exploratory calculation for the highly eccentric binary system delta Sco suggests that the sudden and large amplitude variations in surface properties around periastron may contribute toward the activity observed around this orbital phase.
Short-orbital period small-eccentricity binary pulsars can, in principle, experience substantial advance of periastron. We explore the possibility of measuring this effect by implementing a timing model, ELL1k, in the popular TEMPO2 pulsar timing package. True secular variations in the Laplace-Lagrange parameters, present in our ELL1k model, can lead to measurable timing residuals while pursuing decade-long timing campaigns using the existing ELL1 timing model of Lange et al. (2001), especially for binaries exhibiting significant periastron advance. We also list the main differences between ou…
Binary stars in eccentric orbits are frequently reported to present increasing levels of activity around periastron passage. In this paper we present results of a calculation from first principles of the velocity field on the surface of a star that is perturbed by a binary companion. This allows us to follow the orbital phase-dependence of the amount of kinetic energy that may be dissipated through the viscous shear, dot-E, driven by tidal interactions. For stars with relatively small stellar radii compared with the orbital separation at periastron (R/r_per< 0.14), a clear maximum occurs befor…
Modelling ellipsoidal variables with known distances can lead to exact determination of the masses of both components, even in the absence of eclipses. We present such modelling using light and radial velocity curves of ellipsoidal red giant binaries in the LMC, where they are also known as sequence E stars. Stars were selected as likely eccentric systems on the basis of light curve shape alone. We have confirmed their eccentric nature and obtained system parameters using the Wilson-Devinney code. Most stars in our sample exhibit unequal light maxima as well as minima, a phenomenon not observe…
Among young binary stars whose magnetospheres are expected to collide, only two systems have been observed near periastron in the X-ray band: the low-mass DQ Tau and the older and more massive HD 152404. Both exhibit elevated levels of X-ray emission at periastron. Our goal is to determine whether colliding magnetospheres in young high-eccentricity binaries commonly produce elevated average levels of X-ray activity. This work is based on Chandra snapshots of multiple periastron and non-periastron passages in four nearby young eccentric binaries (Parenago 523, RX J1622.7-2325 Nw, UZ Tau E, and …
Although not nearly as numerous as binaries with two white dwarfs, eccentric neutron star-white dwarf (NS-WD) binaries are important gravitational-wave (GW) sources for the next generation of space-based detectors sensitive to low frequency waves. Here we investigate periastron precession in these sources as a result of general relativistic, tidal, and rotational effects; such precession is expected to be detectable for at least some of the detected binaries of this type. Currently, two eccentric NS-WD binaries are known in the galactic field, PSR J1141-6545 and PSR B2303+46, both of which hav…
We determined the orbits and stellar parameters of three eccentric eclipsing binaries by light curve solutions of their Kepler data. KIC 8111622 and KIC 10518735 undergo total eclipses while KIC 8196180 reveals partial eclipses. The target components are G and K stars, excluding the primary of KIC 8196180 which is early F star. KIC 8196180 reveals well-visible tidally-induced feature at periastron, i.e. it is an eclipsing heartbeat star. The characteristics of the observed periastron feature (shape, width and amplitude) confirm the theoretical predictions. There are additional out-of-eclipse v…
We determined the orbits and stellar parameters of three eccentric eclipsing binaries by light curve solutions of their Kepler data. KIC 10992733 and KIC 5632781 undergo total eclipses while KIC 10026136 reveals partial eclipses. The components of the targets are G and K stars. KIC 10992733 exhibited variations which were attributed to variable visibility of spot(s) on asynchronously rotating component. KIC 5632781 and KIC 1002613 reveal tidally-induced features at periastron, i.e. they might be considered as eclipsing heartbeat stars. The characteristics of the periastron features (shape, wid…
We investigate the secular evolution of the orbital semi-major axis and eccentricity due to mass transfer in eccentric binaries, allowing for both mass and angular momentum loss from the system. Adopting a delta function mass transfer rate at the periastron of the binary orbit, we find that, depending on the initial binary properties at the onset of mass transfer, the orbital semi-major axis and eccentricity can either increase or decrease at a rate linearly proportional to the magnitude of the mass transfer rate at periastron. The range of initial binary mass ratios and eccentricities that le…
We present infrared photometry of the episodic dust-making Wolf-Rayet system WR19 (LS3), tracking its fading from a third observed dust-formation episode in 2007 and strengthening the view that these episodes are periodic (P = 10.1+/-0.1 y). Radial velocities of the O9 component observed between 2001 and 2008 show RV variations consistent with WC19 being a spectroscopic binary of high eccentricity (e=0.8), having periastron passage in 2007.14, shortly before the phase of dust formation. In this respect, WR19 resembles the archetypical episodic dust-making colliding-wind binary system WR140.
Heartbeat stars (HB stars) are a class of eccentric binary stars with close periastron passages. The characteristic photometric HB signal evident in their light curves is produced by a combination of tidal distortion, heating, and Doppler boosting near orbital periastron. Many HB stars continue to oscillate after periastron and along the entire orbit, indicative of the tidal excitation of oscillation modes within one or both stars. These systems are among the most eccentric binaries known, and they constitute astrophysical laboratories for the study of tidal effects. We have undertaken a radia…
We have discovered a class of eccentric binary systems within the Kepler data archive that have dynamic tidal distortions and tidally-induced pulsations. Each has a uniquely shaped light curve that is characterized by periodic brightening or variability at time scales of 4-20 days, frequently accompanied by shorter period oscillations. We can explain the dominant features of the entire class with orbitally-varying tidal forces that occur in close, eccentric binary systems. The large variety of light curve shapes arises from viewing systems at different angles. This hypothesis is supported by s…
We report time-resolved, high-resolution optical spectropolarimetric observations of the young double-lined spectroscopic binary V1878 Ori. Our observations were collected with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope through the BinaMIcS large programme. V1878 Ori A and B are partially convective intermediate mass weak-line T Tauri stars on an eccentric and asynchronous orbit. We also acquired X-ray observations at periastron and outside periastron. Using the least-squares deconvolution technique (LSD) to combine information from many spectral lines, we clearly de…
We describe the results of the world-wide observing campaign of the highly eccentric Be binary system delta Scorpii 2011 periastron passage which involved professional and amateur astronomers. Our spectroscopic observations provided a precise measurement of the system orbital period at 10.8092+/- 0.0005 years. Fitting of the He II 4686A line radial velocity curve determined the periastron passage time on 2011 July 3, UT 9:20 with a 0.9--day uncertainty. Both these results are in a very good agreement with recent findings from interferometry. We also derived new evolutionary masses of the binar…
Heartbeat stars are eccentric (e > 0.2) ellipsoidal variables whose light curves resemble a cardiogram. We present the observations and corresponding model of KIC 3749404, a highly eccentric (e = 0.66), short period (P = 20.3 d) heartbeat star with tidally induced pulsations. A binary star model was created using PHOEBE, which we modified to include tidally induced pulsations and Doppler boosting. The morphology of the photometric periastron variation (heartbeat) depends strongly on the eccentricity, inclination and argument of periastron. We show that the inclusion of tidally induced pulsatio…
We carried out light curve solutions of ten detached eclipsing eccentric binaries observed by Kepler. The formal errors of the derived parameters from the light curve solutions are below 1%. Our results give indications that the components of the eccentric binaries (especially those with mass ratios below 0.5) do not follow precisely the empirical relations between the stellar parameters derived from the study of circular-orbit binaries. We found the following peculiarities of the targets: (a) the components of KIC 9474969 have almost the same temperatures while their radii and masses differ b…
The Rotten Egg Nebula has at its core a binary composed of a Mira star and an A-type companion at a separation >10 au. It has been hypothesized to have formed by strong binary interactions between the Mira and a companion in an eccentric orbit during periastron passage ~800 years ago. We have performed hydrodynamic simulations of an asymptotic giant branch star interacting with companions with a range of masses in orbits with a range of initial eccentricities and periastron separations. For reasonable values of the eccentricity, we find that Roche lobe overflow can take place only if the perio…
This paper discusses a model where a violent periastron collision of stars in an eccentric binary system induces an eruption or explosion seen as a brief transient source, attributed to LBVs, SN impostors, or other transients. The key ingredient is that an evolved primary increases its photospheric radius on relatively short timescales, to a point where the radius is comparable to or larger than the periastron separation in an eccentric binary. In such a configuration, a violent and sudden collision would ensue, possibly leading to substantial mass ejection instead of a binary merger. Repeated…
Aims: Our goal is to investigate how the strength of episodic accretion bursts depends on eccentricity. Methods: We investigate the binary trigger hypothesis in longer-period (>20yr) binaries by carrying out three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the formation of low-mass binary stars down to final separations of $\sim$10$\au$, including the effects of gas turbulence and magnetic fields. We ran two simulations with an initial turbulent gas core of one solar mass each and two different initial turbulent Mach numbers, M = 0.1 and M=0.2, for 6500yr after protostar formation.…
The protostar FU Orionis may not be bursting: dramatic accretion suppression in embedded young eccentric binaries

The nearby high-mass star binary system Theta 1 Orionis C is the brightest and most massive of the Trapezium OB stars at the core of the Orion Nebula Cluster, and it represents a perfect laboratory to determine the fundamental parameters of young hot stars and to constrain the distance of the Orion Trapezium Cluster. Between January 2007 and March 2008, we observed T1OriC with VLTI/AMBER near-infrared (H- and K-band) long-baseline interferometry, as well as with bispectrum speckle interferometry with the ESO 3.6m and the BTA 6m telescopes (B'- and V'-band). Combining AMBER data taken with thre…
The eccentricity, periastron angle, orbital inclination, mass ratio, stellar temperatures and relative stellar radii of 12 eclipsing eccentric binaries were determined on the basis of Kepler data. The analysis of their out-of-eclipse variability led to the following results: (i) KIC 10490980 exhibits rotational (spot-type) variability; (ii) Four new heartbeat stars were found: KIC 9344623 and KIC 10296163, which have wide tidally induced light humps and KIC 9119405 and KIC 9673173, which have narrow "W-shape" features; (iii) KIC 4932691 shows oscillations with approximately the 18th harmonic o…
We study a hierarchical triple system with the Kozai-Lidov mechanism, and analyse the cumulative shift of periastron time of a binary pulsar by the emission of gravitational waves. Time evolution of the osculating orbital elements of the triple system is calculated by directly integrating the first-order post-Newtonian equations of motion. The Kozai-Lidov mechanism will bend the evolution curve of the cumulative shift when the eccentricity becomes large. We also investigate the parameter range of mass and semi-major axis of the third companion with which the bending of the cumulative-shift cur…
Using ASAS-SN data, we find that the bright ($V{\sim}13.5$ mag) variable star MACHO 80.7443.1718 (ASASSN-V J052624.38-684705.6) is the most extreme heartbeat star yet discovered. This massive binary, consisting of at least one early B-type star, has an orbital period of $P_{\rm ASAS-SN}=32.83627\pm0.00846\,{\rm d},$ and is located towards the LH58 OB complex in the LMC. Both the ASAS-SN and TESS light curves show extreme brightness variations of ${\sim}40\%$ at periastron and variations of ${\sim}10\%$ due to tidally excited oscillations outside periastron. We fit an analytical model of the va…
Tidal evolution of eccentric binary systems containing at least one massive main-sequence (MS) star plays an important role in the formation scenarios of merging compact-object binaries. The dominant dissipation mechanism in such systems involves tidal excitation of outgoing internal gravity waves at the convective-radiative boundary and dissipation of the waves at the stellar envelope/surface. We have derived analytical expressions for the tidal torque and tidal energy transfer rate in such binaries for arbitrary orbital eccentricities and stellar rotation rates. These expressions can be used…
We present the first calculations of mass transfer via RLOF for a binary system with a significant eccentricity using our new binary stellar evolution code. The study focuses on a 1.50+1.40 Msun main sequence binary with an eccentricity of 0.25, and an orbital period of about 0.7 d. The reaction of the stellar components due to mass transfer is analyzed, and the evolution of mass transfer during the periastron passage is compared to recent smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. The impact of asynchronism and non-zero eccentricity on the Roche lobe radius, and the effects of tidal and…
Whether tidal disruption events (TDEs) circularise or accrete directly as a highly eccentric disc is the subject of current research and appears to depend sensitively on the disc thermodynamics. In a previous paper we applied the theory of eccentric discs to TDE discs using an $α-$prescription for the disc stress, which leads to solutions that exhibit extreme, potentially unphysical, behaviour. In this paper we further explore the dynamical vertical structure of highly eccentric discs using alternative stress models that are better motivated by the behaviour of magnetic fields in eccentric dis…
With 16-month Kepler data, 14 long-period (40 d - 265 d) eclipsing binaries on highly eccentric orbits (minimum e between 0.5 and 0.85) are recognized from their closely separated primary and secondary eclipses (Δt_I,II = 3 d - 10 d). These systems confirm the existence of a previously hinted binary population situated near a constant angular momentum track at P(1-e^2)^(3/2) ~ 15 d, close to the tidal circularization period P_circ. They may be presently migrating due to tidal dissipation and form a steady-state stream (~1% of stars) feeding the close-binary population (few percent of stars). I…
We present an extended version of the Constant Time Lag analytical approach for the tidal evolution of circumbinary planets introduced in our previous work. The model is self-consistent, in the sense that all tidal interactions between pairs are computed, regardless of their size. We derive analytical expressions for the variational equations governing the spin and orbital evolution, which are expressed as high-order elliptical expansions in the semimajor axis ratio but retain closed form in terms of the binary and planetary eccentricities. These are found to reproduce the results of the numer…
Binary star-formation theory predicts that close binaries (a<100 AU) will experience periodic pulsed accretion events as streams of material form at the inner edge of a circumbinary disk, cross a dynamically cleared gap, and feed circumstellar disks or accrete directly onto the stars. The archetype for the pulsed-accretion theory is the eccentric, short-period, classical T Tauri binary DQ Tau. Low-cadence (~daily) broadband photometry has shown brightening events near most periastron passages, just as numerical simulations would predict for an eccentric binary. Magnetic reconnection events (fl…
Tidal dissipation due to convective turbulent viscosity shapes the evolution of a variety of astrophysical binaries. For example, this type of dissipation determines the rate of orbital circularization in a binary with a post-main sequence star that is evolving toward a common envelope phase. Viscous dissipation can also influence binaries with solar-type stars, or stars with a close-in giant planet. In general, the effective viscosity in a convective stellar envelope depends on the tidal forcing frequency $ω_{\rm tide}$; when $ω_{\rm tide}$ is larger than the turnover frequency of convective …
Tidal dissipation due to turbulent viscosity in the convective regions of giant stars plays an important role in shaping the orbits of pre-common envelope systems. Such systems are possible sources of transients and close compact binary systems that will eventually merge and produce detectable gravitational wave signals. Most previous studies of the onset of common envelope episodes have focused on circular orbits and synchronously rotating donor stars under the assumption that tidal dissipation can quickly spin up the primary and circularize the orbit before the binary reaches Roche-lobe over…
We consider discs that orbit a central object and are tidally perturbed by a circular orbit companion. Such discs are sometimes subject to an eccentric instability due to the effects of certain resonances. Eccentric instabilities may be present in planetary rings perturbed by satellites, protostellar discs perturbed by planets, and discs in binary star systems. Although the basic mechanism for eccentric instability is well understood, the detailed response of a gaseous disc to such an instability is not understood. We apply a linear eccentricity evolution equation developed by Goodchild and Og…
Whether tidal disruption events circularise or accrete directly as highly eccentric discs is the subject of current research and appears to depend sensitively on the disc thermodynamics. One aspect of this problem that has not received much attention is that a highly eccentric disc must have a strong, non-hydrostatic variation of the disc scale height around each orbit. As a complement to numerical simulations carried out by other groups, we investigate the dynamical structure of TDE discs using the nonlinear theory of eccentric accretion discs. In particular, we study the variation of physica…
This work is part of a multi-wavelength program to study the effects of X-ray/UV/optical stellar radiation on the chemistry of the circumbinary disk around the young high-eccentricity binary DQ Tau. ALMA observations for near/around December 5, 2021 periastron were postponed due to bad weather, but supporting Swift-XRT-UVOT TOO observations were successful. These Swift observations along with previous X-ray-optical-mm data show that DQ Tau keeps exhibiting powerful flares near periastron, offering a unique laboratory for studies of flare effects on the gas-phase ion chemistry in protoplanetary…
With hydrodynamical simulations we examine the evolution of a protoplanetary disc around $α$ Centauri B including the effect of the eccentric orbit binary companion $α$ Centauri A. The initially circular orbit disc undergoes two types of eccentricity growth. First, the eccentricity oscillates on the orbital period of the binary, $P_{\rm orb}$, due to the eccentricity of the binary orbit. Secondly, for a sufficiently small disc aspect ratio, the disc undergoes global forced eccentricity oscillations on a time-scale of around $20\,P_{\rm orb}$. These oscillations damp out through viscous dissipa…
X-ray photometry and optical spectra are presented covering the periastron passage of the highly-eccentric, ~50 year binary system PSR J2032+4127 in November 2017. This system consists of a 143 ms pulsar in orbit around a massive OB star, MT 91-213. The data show dramatic changes during the encounter as the pulsar wind collided with the stellar wind. The X-ray flux rose on the approach to periastron, then underwent a major dip in the few days around periastron, and then gradually declined over the next few weeks. The optical spectroscopy revealed a steady decline in the H? line strength on the…
25%-50% of all white dwarfs (WDs) host observable and dynamically active remnant planetary systems based on the presence of close-in circumstellar dust and gas and photospheric metal pollution. Currently-accepted theoretical explanations for the origin of this matter include asteroids that survive the star's giant branch evolution at au-scale distances and are subsequently perturbed onto WD-grazing orbits following stellar mass loss. In this work we investigate the tidal disruption of these highly-eccentric (e > 0.98) asteroids as they approach and tidally disrupt around the WD. We analyticall…
A significant fraction of white dwarfs show metal lines indicative of pollution with planetary material but the accretion process remains poorly understood. The main aim of this paper is to produce a road-map illustrating several potential routes for white dwarf pollution and to link these paths to observational outcomes. Our proposed main road begins with the tidal disruption of a scattered asteroid and the formation of a highly eccentric tidal disc with a wide range of fragment sizes. Accretion of these fragments by Poynting-Robertson (PR) drag alone is too slow to explain the observed rates…
Recent discoveries of several transiting planets with clearly non-zero eccentricities and some large inclinations started changing the simple picture of close-in planets having circular and well-aligned orbits. Two major scenarios to form such planets are planet migration in a disk, and planet--planet interactions combined with tidal dissipation. The former scenario can naturally produce a circular and low-obliquity orbit, while the latter implicitly assumes an initially highly eccentric and possibly high-obliquity orbit, which are then circularized and aligned via tidal dissipation. We invest…
We run hydrodynamic simulations which follow the colliding winds structure of the massive binary system HD 166734 along its binary orbit, and show that close to periastron passage the secondary wind is suppressed and the secondary accretes mass from the primary wind. The system consists two blue supergiants with masses of $M_1 \approx 39.5 ~\rm{M_\odot}$ and $M_2 \approx 30.5 ~\rm{M_\odot}$, on a $P \simeq 34.538 ~\rm{days}$ orbit with eccentricity of $e \approx 0.618$. This close O-O binary with high eccentricity is observed through its orbit in the X-rays, where it shows an unusual long mini…
Galactic center black holes appear to be nearly universally surrounded by dense stellar clusters. When these black holes go through an active accretion phase, the multiple components of the accretion disk, stellar cluster, and black hole system all coexist. We analyze the effect of drag forces on highly eccentric stellar orbits incurred as stars puncture through the disk plane. Disk crossings dissipate orbital energy, drawing eccentric stars into more circular orbits. For high surface density disks, such as those found around black holes accreting near the Eddington mass accretion limit, the m…
Massive and intermediate-mass stars reside in binary systems much more frequently than low-mass stars. Binaries containing massive main-sequence (MS) component(s) are often characterised by eccentric orbits, and can be observed as eccentric ellipsoidal variables (EEVs). The orbital phase-dependent tidal potential acting on the components of EEV can induce tidally excited oscillations (TEOs). We investigate how the history of resonances between the eigenmode spectra of the EEV components and the tidal forcing frequencies depends on the initial parameters of the system. We synthesised 20,000 evo…
Several white dwarfs with atmospheric metal pollution have been found to host small planetary bodies (planetesimals) orbiting near the tidal disruption radius. We study the physical properties and dynamical origin of these bodies under the hypothesis that they underwent high-eccentricity migration from initial distances of several astronomical units. We examine two plausible mechanisms for orbital migration and circularization: tidal friction and ram-pressure drag in a compact disc. For each mechanism, we derive general analytic expressions for the evolution of the orbit that can be rescaled f…
