Spintronics is the ability of injecting, manipulating and detecting electron spins into solid state systems. Molecular-electronics investigates the possibility of making electronic devices using organic molecules. Traditionally these two burgeoning areas have lived separate lives, but recently a growing number of experiments have indicated a possible pathway towards their integration. This is the playground for molecular-spintronics, where spin-polarized currents are carried through molecules, and in turn they can affect the state of the molecule. We review the most recent advances in molecula…
Molecular bridges covalently bonded to two ferromagnetic electrodes can transform ferromagnetic materials and produce intriguing spin transport characteristics. This paper discusses the impact of molecule induced strong coupling on spin transport. To study the molecular coupling effect organometallic molecular complex (OMC) was bridged between two ferromagnetic electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (Ta/Co/NiFe/AlOx/NiFe/Ta) along the exposed side edges. OMCs induced strong iter-ferromagnetic electrode coupling to yield drastic changes in transport properties of the magnetic tunnel junction …

Advancement of molecular devices will critically depend on the approach to establish electrical connections to the functional molecule(s). We produced a molecular device strategy which is based on chemically attaching of molecules between the two magnetic/nonmagnetic metallic electrodes along the multilayer edge(s) of a prefabricated tunnel junction. Here, we present the fabrication methodology for producing these multilayer edge molecular electronics/spintronics devices (MEMEDs/MEMSDs) and details of the associated challenges and their solutions. The key highlight of our MEMED/MEMSD approach …
We investigate the spin transport through strongly anisotropic noncollinear magnetic molecules and find that the noncollinear magnetization acts as a spin-switching device for the current. Moreover, spin currents are shown to offer a viable route to selectively prepare the molecular device in one of two degenerate noncollinear magnetic states. Spin-currents can be also used to create a non-zero density of toroidal magnetization in a recently characterized Dy_3 noncollinear magnet.
Organic semiconductors find increasing importance in spin transport devices due to the modulation and control of their properties through chemical synthetic versatility. The organic materials are used as interlayers between two ferromagnet (FM) electrodes in organic spin valves (OSV), as well as for magnetic spin manipulation of metal-organic complexes at the molecular level. In the latter, specifically, the substrate-induced magnetic switching in a paramagnetic molecule has been evoked extensively, but studied by delicate surface spectroscopies. Here we present evidence of the substantial mag…
This paper reports our Monte Carlo (MC) studies aiming to explain the experimentally observed paramagnetic molecule induced antiferromagnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes. Recently developed magnetic tunnel junction based molecular spintronics devices (MTJMSDs), which were prepared by chemically bonding the paramagnetic molecules between the FM electrodes along the exposed side edges of magnetic tunnel junctions, exhibited molecule induced strong antiferromagnetic coupling. Our MC studies focused on the atomic model analogous to the MTJMSD and studied the effect of molecu…
Magnetic tunnel junction-based molecular spintronics devices (MTJMSDs) are designed by covalently connecting the paramagnetic molecules across two ferromagnets (FM) electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). MTJMSD provides opportunities to connect FM electrodes of a vast range of anisotropy properties to a variety of molecules of length scale. Our prior studies showed that the paramagnetic molecules can produce strong antiferromagnetic coupling with FM electrodes. The device properties of MTJMSD depend upon various factors such as anisotropy, spin fluctuation, thermal energy, etc. In thi…
We present a model for molecular materials made up of polar and polarizable molecular units. A simple two state model is adopted for each molecular site and only classical intermolecular interactions are accounted for, neglecting any intermolecular overlap. The complex and interesting physics driven by interactions among polar and polarizable molecules becomes fairly transparent in the adopted model. Collective effects are recognized in the large variation of the molecular polarity with supramolecular interactions, and cooperative behavior shows up with the appearance, in attractive lattices, …
Dream of developing molecule-based logic and memory device is more than 70-year-old. Presently, molecule-based devices are also considered for quantum computation hardware. The recent studies have shown the molecule connected to metal leads can perform the qubit-based logic operation. This is an interesting question of why experimental progress is still very slow even when the scope of molecule-based devices may govern the advancement of next-generation logic and memory devices for the highest possible computer technologies. Molecules have the potential to be unmatched device elements as chemi…
Graphene - transition metal phthalocyanine (G-MPc) hybrid systems constitute promising platforms for densely-packed single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, we selected iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) and investigated its interaction with pristine and defective graphene layers employing density functional theory. Our calculations indicate that thorough proper dehydrogenation of the benzol rings in the FePc molecule its adsorption to graphene is thermodynamically favorable. In general, the presence of anchoring sites on the graphene layer, i.e. point defects, additionally facilitates the adsorption…
Electrically manipulating the quantum properties of nano-objects, such as atoms or molecules, is typically done using scanning tunnelling microscopes and lateral junctions. The resulting nanotransport path is well established in these model devices. Societal applications require transposing this knowledge to nano-objects embedded within vertical solid-state junctions, which can advantageously harness spintronics to address these quantum properties thanks to ferromagnetic electrodes and high-quality interfaces. The challenge here is to ascertain the device's effective, buried nanotransport path…
Whereas spintronics brings the spin degree of freedom to electronic devices, molecular/organic electronics adds the opportunity to play with the chemical versatility. We report on giant tunnel magnetoresistance of up to 300% in a (La,Sr)MnO3/Alq3/Co nanometer size magnetic tunnel junction. Moreover, we propose a spin dependent transport model giving a new understanding of spin injection into organic …
FeSn is a room-temperature antiferromagnet expected to host Dirac fermions in its electronic structure. The interplay of magnetic degree of freedom and the Dirac fermions makes FeSn an attractive platform for spintronics and electronic devices. While stabilization of thin film FeSn is needed for the development of such devices, there exist no previous report of epitaxial growth of single crystalline FeSn. Here we report the realization of epitaxial thin films of FeSn (001) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on single crystal SrTiO$_{3}$ (111) substrates. By combining X-ray diffraction, electrical…
After decades of research, the low Curie temperature of ferromagnetic semiconductors remains the key problem in the development of magnetic semiconductor spintronic technologies. Removing this roadblock might require a change of the field's basic materials paradigm by looking beyond ferromagnets. Recent studies of relativistic magnetic and magnetotransport anisotropy effects, which in principle are equally well present in materials with ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically ordered spins, have inspired our search for antiferromagnetic semiconductors suitable for high-temperature spintron…
Chirality in organic molecules has attracted considerable attention in the fields of chemistry, biology, and spintronics. This paper reports on perpendicular magnetization hysteresis loops of a multilayer consisting of ultrathin Fe (001), chiral phthalocyanine molecule ((P)- or (M)-PbPc-DTBPh), and MgO (001). We find a chirality-dependent shift of the hysteresis loop. Unlike the previously reported bias current induced phenomena, the result shows a chirality-induced effective magnetic field in the phthalocyanine molecule in the absence of a bias current in the system. This study opens up a new…
Molecular electronic spins represent one of the most promising building blocks for the design of quantum computing architectures. However, the advancement of this technology requires the increase of spin lifetime at ambient temperature. Spin-phonon coupling has been recognized as the key interaction dictating spin relaxation at high temperature in molecular crystals and the search for chemical-design principles to control such interaction are a fundamental challenge in the field. Here we present a multi-reference first-principles analysis of the g-tensor and the spin-phonon coupling in a serie…
Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), originating from spin-orbit coupling (SOC), is the sensitivity of the electrical resistance in magnetic systems to the direction of spin magnetization. Although this phenomenon has been experimentally reported for several nanoscale junctions, a clear understanding of the physical mechanism behind it is still elusive. Here we discuss a novel concept based on orbital symmetry considerations to attain a significant AMR of up to 95\% for a broad class of $π$-type molecular spin-valves. It is illustrated at the benzene-dithiolate molecule connected between two m…
