We use the new cosmological recombination code, CosmoRec, for parameter estimation in the context of (future) precise measurements of the CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies. We address the question of how previously neglected physical processes in the recombination model of Recfast affect the determination of key cosmological parameters, for the first time performing a model-by-model computation of the recombination problem. In particular we ask how the biases depend on different combinations of parameters, e.g. when varying the helium abundance or the effective number of neutrino species in addition to the standard six parameters. We also forecast how important the recombination corrections are for a combined Planck, ACTPol and SPTpol data analysis. Furthermore, we ask which recombination corrections are really crucial for CMB parameter estimation, and whether an approach based on a redshift-dependent correction function to Recfast is sufficient in this context.
We present the new recombination code HYREC-2, holding the same accuracy as the state-of-the-art codes HYREC and COSMOREC and, at the same time, surpassing the computational speed of the code RECFAST commonly used for CMB-anisotropy data analyses. HYREC-2 is based on an effective 4-level atom model, accounting exactly for the non-equilibrium of highly excited states of hydrogen, and very accurately for radiative transfer effects with a correction to the Lyman-$α$ escape rate. The latter is computed with the original HYREC, and tabulated, as a function of temperature, along with its derivatives…
A new approach to the cosmological recombination problem is presented, which completes our previous analysis on the effects of two-photon processes during the epoch of cosmological hydrogen recombination, accounting for ns-1s and nd-1s Raman events and two-photon transitions from levels with n>=2. The recombination problem for hydrogen is described using an effective 400-shell multi-level approach, to which we subsequently add all important recombination corrections discussed in the literature thus far. We explicitly solve the radiative transfer equation of the Lyman-series photon field to obt…
The estimation of cosmological parameters from a given data set requires a construction of a likelihood function which, in general, has a complicated functional form. We adopt a Gaussian copula and constructed a copula likelihood function for the convergence power spectrum from a weak lensing survey. We show that the parameter estimation based on the Gaussian likelihood erroneously introduces a systematic shift in the confidence region, in particular for a parameter of the dark energy equation of state w. Thus, the copula likelihood should be used in future cosmological observations.
Cosmological parameter measurements from CMB experiments such as Planck, ACTpol, SPTpol and other high resolution follow-ons fundamentally rely on the accuracy of the assumed recombination model, or one with well prescribed uncertainties. Deviations from the standard recombination history might suggest new particle physics or modified atomic physics. Here we treat possible perturbative fluctuations in the free electron fraction, $\Xe(z)$, by a semi-blind expansion in densely-packed modes in redshift. From these we construct parameter eigenmodes, which we rank order so that the lowest modes pro…
Observations of the 21 cm line radiation coming from the epoch of reionization have a great capacity to study the cosmological growth of the Universe. Also, CMB polarization produced by gravitational lensing has a large amount of information about the growth of matter fluctuations at late time. In this thesis, we investigate their sensitivities to the impact of neutrino property on the growth of density fluctuations, such as the total neutrino mass, the neutrino mass hierarchy, the effective number of neutrino species (extra radiation), and the lepton asymmetry of our Universe. We will show th…
Future galaxy redshift surveys aim at probing the clustering of the cosmic large-scale structure with unprecedented accuracy, thus complementing cosmic microwave background experiments in the quest to deliver the most precise and accurate picture ever of our Universe. Analyses of such measurements are usually performed within the context of the so-called vanilla LCDM model - the six-parameter phenomenological model which, for instance, emerges from best fits against the recent data obtained by the Planck satellite. Here, we show that such an approach is prone to subtle systematics when the Gau…
Peculiar velocities are a precious tool to study the large-scale distribution of matter in the local universe and test cosmological models. However, present measurements of peculiar velocities are based on empirical distance indicators, which introduce large error bars. Here we present a new method to measure the peculiar velocities, by directly estimating luminosity distances through waveform signals from inspiralling compact binaries and measuring redshifts from electromagnetic (EM) counterparts. In the future, with the distance uncertainty of GW events reducing to $0.1$ per cent by future G…
Cosmological weak lensing has been a highly successful and rapidly developing research field since the first detection of cosmic shear in 2000. However, it has recently been pointed out in Yoo et al. that the standard weak lensing formalism yields gauge-dependent results and, hence, does not meet the level of accuracy demanded by the next generation of weak lensing surveys. Here, we show that the Jacobi mapping formalism provides a solid alternative to the standard formalism, as it accurately describes all the relativistic effects contributing to the weak lensing observables. We calculate gaug…

In the next decades, the gravitational-wave (GW) standard siren observations and the neutral hydrogen 21-cm intensity mapping (IM) surveys, as two promising cosmological probes, will play an important role in precisely measuring cosmological parameters. In this work, we make a forecast for cosmological parameter estimation with the synergy between the GW standard siren observations and the 21-cm IM surveys. We choose the Einstein Telescope (ET) and the Taiji observatory as the representatives of the GW detection projects and choose the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) phase I mid-frequency array a…
In this paper we present a new method to extract cosmological parameters using the radial scale of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations as a standard ruler in deep galaxy surveys. The method consists in an empirical parametrization of the radial 2-point correlation function, which provides a robust and precise extraction of the sound horizon scale. Moreover, it uses data from galaxy surveys in a manner that is fully cosmology independent and therefore, unbiased. A study of the main systematic errors and the validation of the method in cosmological simulations are also presented, showing that the m…
Highly precise weak lensing shear measurement is required for statistical weak gravitational lensing analysis such as cosmic shear measurement to achieve severe constrain on the cosmological parameters. For this purpose any systematic error in the measurement should be corrected. One of the main systematic error comes from Pixel noise which is Poisson noise of flux from atmosphere. We investigate how the pixel noise makes systematic error in shear measurement based on ERA method and develop the correction method. This method is tested by simulations with various conditions and it is confirmed …
The background photon temperature $\bar T$ is one of the fundamental cosmological parameters. Despite its significance, $\bar T$ has never been allowed to vary in the data analysis, owing to the precise measurement of the comic microwave background (CMB) temperature by COBE FIRAS. However, even in future CMB experiments, $\bar T$ will remain unknown due to the unknown monopole contribution $Θ_0$ at our position to the observed (angle-averaged) temperature $\langle T\rangle^{\rm obs}$. By fixing $\bar T\equiv\langle T\rangle^{\rm obs}$, the standard analysis underestimates the error bars on cos…
The accurate understanding of the ionization history of the Universe plays a fundamental role in modern cosmology. It includes a phase of cosmological reionization after the standard recombination epoch, possibly associated to the early stages of structure and star formation. While the simple "τ-parametrization" of the reionization process and, in particular, of its imprints on the CMB anisotropy likely represents a sufficiently accurate modelling for the interpretation of current CMB data, a great attention has been recently posed on the accurate computation of the reionization signatures in …
We proposed a model-independent method to constrain the cosmological parameters using the Distance Sum Rule of the FLRW metric by combining the time delay distances and the comoving distances through a multi-messenger approach. The time delay distances are measured from lensed gravitational wave~(GW) signals together with their corresponding electromagnetic wave~(EM) counterpart, while the comoving distances are obtained from a parametrized fitting approach with independent supernova observations. With a series of simulations based on Einstein Telescope, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and The…
We study in detail how neutrino perturbations can be followed in linear theory by using only terms up to $l=2$ in the Boltzmann hierarchy. We provide a new approximation to the third moment and demonstrate that the neutrino power spectrum can be calculated to a precision of better than $\sim$ 5% for masses up to $\sim$ 1 eV. The matter and CMB power spectra can be calculated far more precisely and typically at least a factor of a few better than with existing approximations. We then proceed to study how the neutrino power spectrum can be reliably calculated even in the presence of non-linear g…
We explore the potential of measurements of cosmological effects, such as neutrino spectral distortions from the neutrino decoupling and neutrino clustering in our Galaxy, via cosmic neutrino capture on tritium. We compute the precise capture rates of each neutrino species including such cosmological effects to probe them. These precise estimates of capture rates are also important in that the would-be deviation of the estimated capture rate could suggest new neutrino physics and/or a non-standard evolution of the universe. In addition, we discuss the precise differences between the capture ra…
With the advent of a new generation of cosmological experiments that will provide high-precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxies in the large-scale structure, it is pertinent to examine the potential of performing a joint analysis of multiple cosmological probes. In this paper, we study the cosmological information content contained in the one-loop power spectra and tree bispectra of galaxies cross-correlated with CMB lensing. We use the FFTLog method to compute angular correlations in spherical harmonic space, applicable for wide angles that can be accessed …

Modified gravity is one of the most promising candidates for explaining the current accelerating expansion of the Universe, and even its unification with the inflationary epoch. Nevertheless, the wide range of models capable to explain the phenomena of dark energy, imposes that current research focuses on a more precise study of the possible effects of modified gravity may have on both cosmological and local levels. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of a type of modified gravity, the so-called f(R,G) gravity and we perform a deep analysis on the stability of important cosmological soluti…
Galaxy clusters are a recent cosmological probe. The precision and accuracy of the cosmological parameters inferred from these objects are affected by the knowledge of cluster physics, entering the analysis through the mass-observable scaling relations, and the theoretical description of their mass and redshift distribution, modelled by the mass function. In this work, we forecast the impact of different modelling of these ingredients for clusters detected by future optical and near-IR surveys. We consider the standard cosmological scenario and the case with a time-dependent equation of state …
We show that the Platinum gamma-ray burst (GRB) data compilation, probing the redshift range $0.553 \leq z \leq 5.0$, obeys a cosmological-model-independent three-parameter fundamental plane (Dainotti) correlation and so is standardizable. While they probe the largely unexplored $z \sim 2.3-5$ part of cosmological redshift space, the GRB cosmological parameter constraints are consistent with, but less precise than, those from a combination of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and Hubble parameter [$H(z)$] data. In order to increase the precision of GRB-only cosmological constraints, we exclude…
The cosmological principle says that the Universe is spatially homogeneous and isotropic. It predicts, among other phenomena, the cosmic redshift of light and the Hubble law. Nevertheless, the existence of structure in the Universe violates the (exact) cosmological principle. A more precise formulation of the cosmological principle must allow for the formation of structure and must therefore incorporate probability distributions. In this contribution to the Memorial Volume for Wolfgang Kummer, a great teacher and mentor to me, I discuss how we could formulate a new version of the cosmological …
Remarkable development of cosmology is benefited from the increasingly improved measurements of cosmic distances including absolute distances and relative distances. In recent years, however, the emerged cosmological tensions motivate us to explore the independent and precise late-universe probes. The two observational effects of strong gravitational lensing (SGL), the velocity dispersions of lens galaxies and the time delays between multiple images, can provide measurements of relative and absolute distances respectively, and their combination is possible to break the degeneracies between cos…
By making a suitable generalization of the Starobinsky stochastic inflation, we propose a classical phase space formulation of stochastic inflation which may be used for a quantitative study of decoherence of cosmological perturbations during inflation. The precise knowledge of how much cosmological perturbations have decohered is essential to the understanding of acoustic oscillations of cosmological microwave background (CMB) photons. In order to show how the method works, we provide the relevant equations for a self-interacting inflaton field. For pedagogical reasons and to provide a link t…

We study the prospects of using the low-redshift and high-redshift black hole shadows as new cosmological standard rulers for measuring cosmological parameters. We show that, using the low-redshift observation of the black hole shadow of M87$^\star$, the Hubble constant can be independently determined with a precision of about $13\%$ as $H_0=70\pm 9$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. The high-redshift observations of super-massive black hole shadows may accurately determine a combination of parameters $H_0$ and ${Ω_{\rm m}}$, and we show by a simple simulation that combining them with the type Ia supern…
The strongest transitions of Zn and CrII are the most sensitive to relative variations in the fine-structure constant ($Δα/α$) among the transitions commonly observed in quasar absorption spectra. They also lie within just 40Å of each other (rest frame), so they are resistant to the main systematic error affecting most previous measurements of $Δα/α$: long-range distortions of the wavelength calibration. While Zn and CrII absorption is normally very weak in quasar spectra, we obtained high signal-to-noise, high-resolution echelle spectra from the Keck and Very Large Telescopes of 9 rare system…
We have developed a precise dictionary between the spectrum of primordial density fluctuations and the parameters of the effective field theory (EFT) of inflation that determine the primordial power spectrum (PPS). At lowest order the EFT contains two parameters: the slow-roll parameter $ε$, which acts as an order parameter, and the speed of sound $c_s$. Applying second-order perturbation theory, we provide maps from the PPS to the EFT parameters that are precise up to the cube of the fractional change in the PPS $(Δ\mathcal{P}/\mathcal{P})^3$, or less than $1\%$ for spectral features that mod…
Cosmological evolution of axionic string network is analyzed in terms of field-theoretic simulations in a box of 512^3 grids, which are the largest ever, using a new and more efficient identification scheme of global strings. The scaling parameter is found to be ξ=0.87 +- 0.14 in agreement with previous results. The energy spectrum is calculated precisely using a pseudo power spectrum estimator which significantly reduces the error in the mean reciprocal comoving momentum. The resultant constraint on the axion decay constant leads to f_a <= 3*10^11 GeV. We also discuss implications for the ear…
In order to precisely measure the cosmological parameters and answer the fundamental questions in cosmology, it is necessary to develop new, powerful cosmological probes, in addition to the proposed next-generation optical survey projects. The neutral hydrogen 21 cm sky surveys will provide a promising tool to study the late-universe evolution, helping shed light on the nature of dark energy. The Square Kilometre Array is the largest radio telescope in the world to be constructed in the near future, and it will push the 21 cm cosmology into a new era and greatly promote the development of cosm…
The early reionization (ERE) is supposed to be a physical process which happens after recombination, but before the instantaneous reionization caused by the first generation of stars. We investigate the effect of the ERE on the temperature and polarization power spectra of cosmic microwave background (CMB), and adopt principal components analysis (PCA) to model-independently reconstruct the ionization history during the ERE. In addition, we also discuss how the ERE affects the cosmological parameter estimates, and find that the ERE does not impose any significant influences on the tensor-to-sc…
Empirically, Type Ia supernovae are the most useful, precise, and mature tools for determining astronomical distances. Acting as calibrated candles they revealed the presence of dark energy and are being used to measure its properties. However, the nature of the SN Ia explosion, and the progenitors involved, have remained elusive, even after seven decades of research. But now new large surveys are bringing about a paradigm shift --- we can finally compare samples of hundreds of supernovae to isolate critical variables. As a result of this, and advances in modeling, breakthroughs in understandi…
We present cosmological constraints on the sum of neutrino masses as a function of the neutrino lifetime, in a framework in which neutrinos decay into dark radiation after becoming non-relativistic. We find that in this regime the cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and (uncalibrated) luminosity distance to supernovae from the Pantheon catalog constrain the sum of neutrino masses $\sum m_ν$ to obey $\sum m_ν< 0.42$ eV at (95$\%$ C.L.). While the the bound has improved significantly as compared to the limits on the same scenario from Planck 2015, it still rep…
Measurements of CMB anisotropy and, more recently, polarization have played a very important role in cosmology. Besides precise determination of various parameters of the `standard' cosmological model, observations have also established some important basic tenets that underlie models of cosmology and structure formation in the universe -- `acausally' correlated, adiabatic, primordial perturbations in a flat, statistically isotropic universe. These are consistent with the expectation of the paradigm of inflation and the generic prediction of the simplest realization of inflationary scenario in…
