We introduce the telescopic relative entropy (TRE), which is a new regularisation of the relative entropy related to smoothing, to overcome the problem that the relative entropy between pure states is either zero or infinity and therefore useless as a distance measure in this case. We study basic properties of this quantity, and find interesting relationships between the TRE and the trace norm distance. We then exploit the same techniques to obtain a new and shorter proof of a lower bound on the relative Renyi entropies in terms of the trace norm distance, $\traceρ^{1-p}σ^p \ge 1-(||ρ-σ||_1)/2$.
In previous work (see arxiv:1102.3040), we have defined the telescopic relative entropy (TRE), which is a regularisation of the quantum relative entropy $S(ρ||σ)=\traceρ(\logρ-\logσ)$, by replacing the second argument $σ$ by a convex combination of the first and the second argument, $τ=aρ+(1-a)σ$ and dividing the result by $-\log a$. We also explored some basic properties of the TRE. In this follow-up paper we state and prove two upper bounds on the variation of the TRE when either the first or the second argument changes. These bounds are close in spirit to a triangle inequality. For the ordi…
In the dynamics of open quantum systems, the backflow of information to the reduced system under study has been suggested as the actual physical mechanism inducing memory and thus leading to non-Markovian quantum dynamics. To this aim, the trace-distance or Bures-distance revivals between distinct evolved system states have been shown to be subordinated to the establishment of system-environment correlations or changes in the environmental state. We show that this interpretation can be substantiated also for a class of entropic quantifiers. We exploit a suitably regularized version of Umegaki'…
We derive a strengthened monotonicity inequality for quantum relative entropy by employing properties of $α$-Rényi relative entropy. We develop a unifying treatment towards the improvement of some quantum entropy inequalities. In particular, an emphasis is put on a lower bound of quantum conditional mutual information (QCMI) as it gives a Pinsker-like lower bound for the QCMI. We also give some improved entropy inequalities based on Rényi relative entropy. The inequalities obtained, thus, extends some well-known ones. We also obtain a condition under which a tripartite operator becomes a Marko…
The operational characterization of quantum coherence is the corner stone in the development of resource theory of coherence. We introduce a new coherence quantifier based on max-relative entropy. We prove that max-relative entropy of coherence is directly related to the maximum overlap with maximally coherent states under a particular class of operations, which provides an operational interpretation of max-relative entropy of coherence. Moreover, we show that, for any coherent state, there are examples of subchannel discrimination problems such that this coherent state allows for a higher pro…
Fidelity and relative entropy are two significant quantities in quantum information theory. We study the quantum fidelity and relative entropy under unitary orbits. The maximal and minimal quantum fidelity and relative entropy between two unitary orbits are explicitly derived. The potential applications in quantum computation and information processing are discussed.
It is well known that for pure states the relative entropy of entanglement is equal to the reduced entropy, and the closest separable state is explicitly known as well. The same holds for Renyi relative entropy per recent results. We ask the same question for a quasi-relative entropy of entanglement, which is an entanglement measure defined as the minimum distance to the set of separable state, when the distance is measured by the quasi-relative entropy. First, we consider a maximally entangled state, and show that the closest separable state is the same for any quasi-relative entropy as for t…
Generalized entropies and relative entropies are the subject of active research. Similar to the standard relative entropy, the relative $q$-entropy is generally unbounded for $q>1$. Upper bounds on the quantum relative $q$-entropy in terms of norm distances between its arguments are obtained in finite-dimensional context. These bounds characterize a continuity property in the sense of Fannes.
Quasi-factorization-type inequalities for the relative entropy have recently proven to be fundamental in modern proofs of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for quantum spin systems. In this paper, we show some results of weak quasi-factorization for the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy, i.e. upper bounds for the BS-entropy between two bipartite states in terms of the sum of two conditional BS-entropies, up to some multiplicative and additive factors.
A new form of zero-discord state via Petz's monotonicity condition on relative entropy with equality has been derived systematically. A generalization of symmetric zero-discord states is presented and the related physical implications are discussed.
The quantum relative entropy is frequently used as a distance, or distinguishability measure between two quantum states. In this paper we study the relation between this measure and a number of other measures used for that purpose, including the trace norm distance. More precisely, we derive lower and upper bounds on the relative entropy in terms of various distance measures for the difference of the states based on unitarily invariant norms. The upper bounds can be considered as statements of continuity of the relative entropy distance in the sense of Fannes. We employ methods from optimisati…
We present a formula for the relative entropy S(rho||sigma) of two n mode gaussian states rho, sigma in the boson Fock space. It is shown that the relative entropy has a classical and a quantum part: The classical part consists of a weighted linear combination of relative Shannon entropies of n pairs of Bernouli trials arising from the thermal state composition of the gaussian states rho and sigma. The quantum part has a sum of n terms, that are functions of the annihilation means and the covariance matrices of 1-mode marginals of the gaussian state $ρ'$, which is equivalent to ρunder a disent…
In this work, we provide a strengthening of the data processing inequality for the relative entropy introduced by Belavkin and Staszewski (BS-entropy). This extends previous results by Carlen and Vershynina for the relative entropy and other standard $f$-divergences. To this end, we provide two new equivalent conditions for the equality case of the data processing inequality for the BS-entropy. Subsequently, we extend our result to a larger class of maximal $f$-divergences. Here, we first focus on quantum channels which are conditional expectations onto subalgebras and use the Stinespring dila…
Kullback-Leibler relative-entropy has unique properties in cases involving distributions resulting from relative-entropy minimization. Tsallis relative-entropy is a one parameter generalization of Kullback-Leibler relative-entropy in the nonextensive thermostatistics. In this paper, we present the properties of Tsallis relative-entropy minimization and present some differences with the classical case. In the representation of such a minimum relative-entropy distribution, we highlight the use of the q-product, an operator that has been recently introduced to derive the mathematical structure be…
In this paper, we introduce and study unified $(r,s)$-relative entropy and quantum unified $(r,s)$-relative entropy, in particular, our main results of quantum unified $(r,s)$-relative entropy are established on the separable complex Hilbert spaces. Moreover, the entanglement-measure of states due to the quantum unified $(r,s)$-relative entropy is considered, too. Our results improved a uncorrect statement on the monotone property of entanglement-measure function.
We explore the role of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy in AdS/CFT and in finite-dimensional models of holographic quantum error correction. In particular, in the context of operator algebra quantum error correction, we discuss a suitable generalization of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy over finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras. It is then shown that the equality of bulk and boundary sandwiched relative Renyi entropies is equivalent to algebraic encoding of bulk and boundary states, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the equality of bulk and boundary relative entropy, and subregion duality. Th…
We prove the ergodic version of the quantum Stein's lemma which was conjectured by Hiai and Petz. The result provides an operational and statistical interpretation of the quantum relative entropy as a statistical measure of distinguishability, and contains as a special case the quantum version of the Shannon-McMillan theorem for ergodic states. A version of the quantum relative Asymptotic Equipartition Property (AEP) is given.
We use the relative modular operator to define a generalized relative entropy for any convex operator function g on the positive real line satisfying g(1) = 0. We show that these convex operator functions can be partitioned into convex subsets each of which defines a unique symmetrized relative entropy, a unique family (parameterized by density matrices) of continuous monotone Riemannian metrics, a unique geodesic distance on the space of density matrices, and a unique monotone operator function satisfying certain symmetry and normalization conditions. We describe these objects explicitly in s…
The measure-theoretic definition of Kullback-Leibler relative-entropy (KL-entropy) plays a basic role in the definitions of classical information measures. Entropy, mutual information and conditional forms of entropy can be expressed in terms of KL-entropy and hence properties of their measure-theoretic analogs will follow from those of measure-theoretic KL-entropy. These measure-theoretic definitions are key to extending the ergodic theorems of information theory to non-discrete cases. A fundamental theorem in this respect is the Gelfand-Yaglom-Perez (GYP) Theorem (Pinsker, 1960, Theorem. 2.4…
We analyze the relative entropy of certain KMS states for scalar self-interacting quantum field theories over Minkowski backgrounds that have been recently constructed by Fredenhagen and Lindner in [FL14] in the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory. The definition we are using is a generalization of the Araki relative entropy to the case of field theories. In particular, we shall see that the analyzed relative entropy is positive in the sense of perturbation theory, hence, even if the relative modular operator is not at disposal in this context, the proposed extension is co…
We derive the entanglement entropy of chiral fermions on the circle at arbitrary temperature. The spin-sector contribution depends only on the total length of the entangling region, regardless of the configuration of the intervals. Thus three-partite information provides a global indicator for the spin boundary conditions. Together with the modular Hamiltonian, our results provide a systematic way of obtaining relative entropy on the torus.
It has been shown that the $α-z$ R{é}nyi relative entropy satisfies the Data Processing Inequality (DPI) for a certain range of $α$'s and $z$'s. Moreover, the range is completely characterized by Zhang in `20. We prove necessary and algebraically sufficient conditions to saturate the DPI for the $α-z$ R{é}nyi relative entropy whenever $1<α\leq 2$ and $\fracα{2}\leq z\leqα$. Moreover, these conditions coincide whenever $α=z$.
The existence of a positive log-Sobolev constant implies a bound on the mixing time of a quantum dissipative evolution under the Markov approximation. For classical spin systems, such constant was proven to exist, under the assumption of a mixing condition in the Gibbs measure associated to their dynamics, via a quasi-factorization of the entropy in terms of the conditional entropy in some sub-$σ$-algebras. In this work we analyze analogous quasi-factorization results in the quantum case. For that, we define the quantum conditional relative entropy and prove several quasi-factorization results…
Tsallis relative operator entropy is defined as a parametric extension of the relative operator entropy. Some properties of the Tsallis relative operator entropy are investigated. Also some operator inequalities related to the Tsallis relative operator entropy are shown.
We develop variational representations for the deformed logarithmic and exponential functions and use them to obtain variational representations related to the quantum Tsallis relative entropy. We extend Golden-Thompson's trace inequality to deformed exponentials with deformation parameter $ q\in[0,1], $ thus complementing the second author's previous study of the cases with deformation parameter $ q \in [1,2] $ or $ q \in [2,3]. $
We prove the Gibbs variational formula in terms of quantum relative entropy density that characterizes translation invariant thermal equilibrium states in quantum lattice systems. It is a natural quantum extension of the similar statement established by Föllmer for classical systems. In this work we advocate the viewpoint: Avoid the unique-phase assumption if it is not essential.
Tsallis relative operator entropy is defined and then its properties are given. Shannon inequality and its reverse one in Hilbert space operators derived by T.Furuta \cite{Fu:par} are extended in terms of the parameter of the Tsallis relative operator entropy. Moreover the generalized Tsallis relative operator entropy is introduced and then several operator inequalities are derived.
We show that a recent definition of relative Rényi entropy is monotone under completely positive, trace preserving maps. This proves a recent conjecture of Müller-Lennert et al.
For discrete-time stochastic processes, there is a close connection between return/waiting times and entropy. Such a connection cannot be straightforwardly extended to the continuous-time setting. Contrarily to the discrete-time case one does need a reference measure and so the natural object is relative entropy rather than entropy. In this paper we elaborate on this in the case of continuous-time Markov processes with finite state space. A reference measure of special interest is the one associated to the time-reversed process. In that case relative entropy is interpreted as the entropy produ…
We prove that the quantum relative entropy is a rate function in large deviation principle. Next, we define information criteria for quantum states and estimate the accuracy of the use of them. Most of the results in this paper are essentially based on Hiai-Ohya-Tsukada theorem.
We give a general formula for the relative entropy between the vacuum state and a coherent state, that is a state obtained by applying an exponentiated stress energy tensor to the vacuum of a chiral conformal field theory on the lightray. As an application of this result, we verify the QNEC and the Bekenstein Bound.
For a general class of lattice-spin systems, we prove that an abstract Gaussian concentration bound implies positivity of lower relative entropy density. As a consequence we obtain uniqueness of translation-invariant Gibbs measures from the Gaussian concentration bound in this general setting. This extends earlier results from [Chazottes-Moles-REdig-Ugalde] with a different and very short proof.
Let $A$ and $B$ be two maximal abelian *-subalgebras of the $n\times n$ complex matrices $M_n(\mathbb{C}).$ To study the movement of the inner automorphisms of $M_n(\mathbb{C}),$ we modify the Connes-St$ø$rmer relative entropy $H(A | B)$ and the Connes relative entropy $H_ϕ(A | B)$ with respect to a state $ϕ,$ and introduce the two kinds of the constant $h(A | B)$ and $h_ϕ(A | B).$ For the unistochastic matrix $b(u)$ defined by a unitary $u$ with $B = uAu^*,$ we show that $h(A | B)$ is the entropy $H(b(u))$ of $b(u).$ This is obtained by our computation of $h_ϕ(A | B).$ The $h(A | B)$ attains …
We prove characterization theorems for relative entropy (also known as Kullback-Leibler divergence), q-logarithmic entropy (also known as Tsallis entropy), and q-logarithmic relative entropy. All three have been characterized axiomatically before, but we show that earlier proofs can be simplified considerably, at the same time relaxing some of the hypotheses.
Many thermodynamic relations involve inequalities, with equality if a process does not involve dissipation. In this article we provide equalities in which the dissipative contribution is shown to involve the relative entropy (a.k.a. Kullback-Leibler divergence). The processes considered are general time evolutions both in classical and quantum mechanics, and the initial state is sometimes thermal, sometimes partially so. By calculating a transport coefficient we show that indeed---at least in this case---the source of dissipation in that coefficient is the relative entropy.
We address the question and related controversy of the formulation of the $q$-entropy, and its relative entropy counterpart, for models described by continuous (non-discrete) sets of variables. We notice that an $L_p$ normalized functional proposed by Lutwak-Yang-Zhang (LYZ), which is essentially a variation of a properly normalized relative Rényi entropy up to a logarithm, has extremal properties that make it an attractive candidate which can be used to construct such a relative $q$-entropy. We comment on the extremizing probability distributions of this LYZ functional, its relation to the es…
We introduce the notion of relative volume entropy for two spacetimes with preferred compact spacelike foliations. This is accomplished by applying the notion of Kullback-Leibler divergence to the volume elements induced on spacelike slices. The resulting quantity gives a lower bound on the number of bits which are necessary to describe one metric given the other. For illustration, we study some examples, in particular gravitational waves, and conclude that the relative volume entropy is a suitable device for quantitative comparison of the inhomogeneity of two spacetimes.
