The symmetry studies of Maxwell equations gave new insight on the nature of electromagnetic (EM) field. Tey are reviewed in the work presented. It is drawing the attention on the following aspects.
EM-field has in general case quaternion structure, consisting of four independent field constituents, which differ from each other by the parities under space inversion and time reversal.
There exists physical conserving quantity, which is simultaneously invariant under both Rainich dual and additional hyperbolic dual symmetry transformation of Maxwell equations. It is spin in general case or spirality in the corresponding geometry.
Generalized Maxwell equations for quaternion four-component EM-field are obtained.
Invariants for EM-field, consisting of dually symmetric parts are found.
The main postulate of quantum mechanics: "To any mechanical quantity can be set up in the correspondence the Hermitian matrix by quantization" was proved.
Canonical Dirac quantization method was developed in two aspects. The first aspect is its application the only to observable quantities. The second aspect is the realization along with well known time-local quantization of space-local quantization and space-time-local quantization. It is also shown, that Coulomb field can be quantized in 1D and 2D systems.
The photons in quantized EM-field are main excitations in oscillator structure of EM-field, which is equivalent to spin S = 1 "boson-atomic" 1D lattice structure, consisting of the "atoms" with zeroth rest mass. The photons of the first kind and of the second kind represent themselves respectively neutral chargeless spin 1/2 EM-solitons and charged spinless EM-solitons of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger family.
Use is made of the theory of elliptic equations with measures data to prove the Maxwell-Volterra reciprocity law. A simple one-dimensional example is also given.
A non-existence theorem of classical electrodynamics in odd-dimensional spacetimes is shown to be invalid. The source of the error is pointed out, and is then demonstrated during the derivation of the fields generated by a uniformly moving point source.
In this work, a non-relativistic theory of the electroscalar field being an expansion of the classical Maxwell's electrodynamics is presented. Expansion of the classical electrodynamics is based on the hypothesis about an existing new 4-scalar potential complementary to the 4-vector electrodynamic potential. 4-scalar potential, from the viewpoint of the quantum field concept, describes massless scalar particles with a zero spin whose superposition realizes the Coulomb field. In a nonrelativistic approximation this hypothesis leads to the theory in which along with the electric and magnetic fie…
The Maxwell electromagnetic and the Lorentz type force equations are derived in the framework of the R. Feynman proper time paradigm and the related vacuum field theory approach. The electron inertia problem is analyzed within the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms and the related pressure-energy compensation principle. The modified Abraham- Lorentz damping radiation force is derived, the electromagnetic electron mass origin is argued.
A group theoretical description of the Majorana-Oppenheimer quantum electrodynamics is considered. Different spinor realizations of the Maxwell and Dirac fields are discussed. A representation of the Majorana-Oppenheimer wave equations in terms of the Gel'fand-Yaglom formalism is given.
We describe a seemingly unnoticed feature of the text-book Maxwell-Lorentz system of classical electrodynamics which challenges its formulation in terms of an initial value problem. For point-charges, even after appropriate renormalization, we demonstrate that most of the generic initial data evolves to develop singularities in the electromagnetic fields along the light cones of the initial charge positions. We provide explicit formulas for the corresponding fields, demonstrate how this phenomenon renders the initial value problem ill-posed, and show how such bad initial data can be ruled out …
The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppengeimer approach to the Maxwell electrodynamics in presence of electrical sources and arbitrary media is investigated within the matrix formalism. The symmetry of the matrix Maxwell equation under transformations of the complex rotation group SO(3.C) is demonstrated explicitly. In vacuum case, the matrix form includes four real $4 \times 4$ matrices $α^{b}$. In presence of media matrix form requires two sets of $4 \times 4$ matrices, $α^{b}$ and $β^{b}$ -- simple and symmetrical realization of which is given. Relation of $α^{b}$ and $β^{b}$ to the …
Dirac's operator and Maxwell's equations in vacuum are derived in the algebra of split octonions. The approximations are given which lead to classical Maxwell-Heaviside equations from full octonionic equations. The non-existence of magnetic monopoles in classical electrodynamics is connected with the using of associativity limit.
Magnetized neutron stars constitute a special class of compact objects harbouring gravitational fields that deviate strongly from the Newtonian weak field limit. Moreover strong electromagnetic fields anchored into the star give rise to non-linear corrections to Maxwell equations described by quantum electrodynamics (QED). Electromagnetic fields close to or above the critical value of $\BQ=4.4\times10^9$~T are probably present in some pulsars and for most of the magnetars. To account properly for emission emanating from the neutron star surface like for instance thermal radiation and its polar…
The purpose of this article is twofold. On one hand, we rigorously derive the Newton--Maxwell equation in the Coulomb gauge from first principles of quantum electrodynamics in agreement with the formal Bohr's correspondence principle of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, we establish the global well-posedness of the Newton--Maxwell system on energy-spaces under weak assumptions on the charge distribution. Both results improve the state of the art, and are obtained by incorporating semiclassical and measure theoretical techniques. One of the novelties is the use of quantum propagation proper…
The usual action integral of classical electrodynamics is derived starting from Lanczos's electrodynamics -- a pure field theory in which charged particles are identified with singularities of the homogeneous Maxwell's equations interpreted as a generalization of the Cauchy-Riemann regularity conditions from complex to biquaternion functions of four complex variables. It is shown that contrary to the usual theory based on the inhomogeneous Maxwell's equations, in which charged particles are identified with the sources, there is no divergence in the self-interaction so that the mass is finite, …
A new representation for solutions of Maxwell's equations is derived. Instead of being expanded in plane waves, the solutions are given as linear superpositions of spherical wavelets dynamically adapted to the Maxwell field and well-localized in space at the initial time. The wavelet representation of a solution is analogous to its Fourier representation, but has the advantage of being local. It is closely related to the relativistic coherent-state representations for the Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields developed in earlier work.
The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppenheimer approach to the Maxwell electrodynamics in vacuum is investigated within the matrix formalism. The matrix form of electrodynamics includes three real 4 \times 4 matrices. Within the squaring procedure we construct four formal solutions of the Maxwell equations on the base of scalar Klein -- Fock -- Gordon solutions. The problem of separating physical electromagnetic waves in the linear space λ_{0}Ψ^{0}+λ_{1}Ψ^{1}+λ_{2}Ψ^{2}+ lambda_{3}Ψ^{3} is investigated, several particular cases, plane waves and cylindrical waves, are considered in detai…
An analysis of the concept of orientation used in electrodynamics is presented. At least two different versions are encountered in the literature. Both are clearly identified and comparisons are made.
A general approach is presented to describing nonlinear classical Maxwell electrodynamics with conformal symmetry. We introduce generalized nonlinear constitutive equations, expressed in terms of constitutive tensors dependent on conformal-invariant functionals of the field strengths. This allows a characterization of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories. We obtain a general formula for possible Lagrangian densities in nonlinear conformal-invariant electrodynamics. This generalizes the standard Lagrangian of classical linear electrodynamics so as to preserve the conformal symmetry.
Da Rocha and Rodigues (RR) claim (i) that in classical electrodynamics in vector calculus the distinction between polar and axial vectors and in exterior calculus between twisted and untwisted forms is inappropriate and superfluous, and (ii) that they can derive the Lorentz force equation from Maxwell's equations. As to (i), we point out that the distinction of polar/axial and twisted/untwisted derives from the property of the electric charge of being a pure scalar, that is, not carrying any screw sense. Therefore, the mentioned distinctions are necessary ingredients in any fundamental theory …
The issue of justifying the eddy current approximation of Maxwell's equations is re-considered in the time-dependent setting. Convergence of the solution operators is shown in the sense of strong operator limits.

Pre-metric electrodynamics is a covariant framework for electromagnetism with a general constitutive law. Its lightcone structure can be more complicated than that of Maxwell theory as is shown by the phenomenon of birefringence. We study the energy density of quantized pre-metric electrodynamics theories with linear constitutive laws admitting a single hyperbolicity double-cone and show that averages of the energy density along the worldlines of suitable observers obey a Quantum Energy Inequality (QEI) in states that satisfy a microlocal spectrum condition. The worldlines must meet two condit…
In this paper we discuss the radiation equation of state $p=ρ/2$ in (2+1)-dimensions. In (3+1)-dimensions the equation of state $p=ρ/3$ may be used to describe either actual electromagnetic radiation (photons) as well as a gas of massless particles in a thermodynamic equilibrium (for example neutrinos). In this work it is shown that in the framework of (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell electrodynamics the radiation law $p=ρ/2$ takes place only for plane waves, i.e. for $E = B$. Instead of the linear Maxwell electrodynamics, to derive the (2+1)-radiation law for more general cases with $E \neq B$, one …
Clifford number formalism for Maxwell equations is considered. The Clifford imaginary unit for space-time is introduced as coordinate independent form of fully antisymmetric fourth-rank tensor. The representation of Maxwell equations in massless Dirac equation form is considered; we also consider two approaches to the invariance of Dirac equation in respect of the Lorentz transformations. According to the first approach, the unknown column is invariant and according to the second approach it has the transformation properties known as spinorial ones. Clifford number representation for nonlinear…
A suitable parameterization of space-time in terms of one complex and three quaternionic imaginary units allows Lorentz transformations to be implemented as multiplication by complex-quaternionic numbers rather than matrices. Maxwell's equations reduce to a single equation.
