The survival probability and the first-passage-time statistics are important quantities in different fields. The Wiener process is the simplest stochastic processwith continuous variables, and important results can be explicitly found from it. The presence of a constant drift does not modify its simplicity; however, when the process has a time-dependent component the analysis becomes difficult. In this work we analyze the statistical properties of the Wiener process with an absorbing boundary, under the effect of an exponential time-dependent drift. Based on the backward Fokker-Planck formalism we set the time-inhomogeneous equation and conditions that rule the diffusion of the corresponding survival probability. We propose as the solution an expansion series in terms of the intensity of the exponential drift, resulting in a set of recurrence equations. We explicitly solve the expansion up to second order and comment on higher-order solutions. The first-passage-time density function arises naturally from the survival probability and preserves the proposed expansion. Explicit results, related properties, and limit behaviors are analyzed and extensively compared to numerical simulations.
We study the mean first-passage time (MFPT) for asymmetric continuous-time random walks in continuous-space characterised by waiting-times with finite mean and by jump-sizes with both finite mean and finite variance. In the asymptotic limit, this well-controlled process is governed by an advection-diffusion equation and the MFPT results to be finite when the advecting velocity is in the direction of the boundary. We derive a nonhomogeneous Wiener-Hopf integral equation that allows for the exact calculation of the MFPT by avoiding asymptotic limits and it emerges to depend on the whole distribu…
We consider a particle diffusing in the y-direction, dy/dt=η(t), subject to a transverse shear flow in the x-direction, dx/dt=f(y), where x \ge 0 and x=0 is an absorbing boundary. We treat the class of models defined by f(y) = \pm v_{\pm}(\pm y)^αwhere the upper (lower) sign refers to y>0 (y<0). We show that the particle survives with probability Q(t) \sim t^{-θ} with θ= 1/4, independent of α, if v_{+}=v_{-}. If v_{+} \ne v_{-}, however, we show that θdepends on both αand the ratio v_{+}/v_{-}, and we determine this dependence.
Subdiffusion equation and molecule survival equation, both with Caputo fractional time derivatives with respect to another functions $g_1$ and $g_2$, respectively, are used to describe diffusion of a molecule that can disappear at any time with a constant probability. The process can be interpreted as ``ordinary'' subdiffusion and ``ordinary'' molecule survival process in which timescales are changed by the functions $g_1$ and $g_2$. We derive the first-passage time distribution for the process. The mutual influence of subdiffusion and molecule vanishing processes can be included in the model …
We study the survival probability and the first-passage time distribution for a Brownian motion in a planar wedge with infinite absorbing edges. We generalize existing results obtained for wedge angles of the form $π/n$ with $n$ a positive integer to arbitrary angles, which in particular cover the case of obtuse angles. We give explicit and simple expressions of the survival probability and the first-passage time distribution in which the difference between an arbitrary angle and a submultiple of $π$ is contained in three additional terms. As an application, we obtain the short time developmen…
We investigate the long-time behavior of the survival probability of a tagged particle in a single-file diffusion in a finite interval. The boundary conditions are of two types: 1) one boundary is absorbing the second is reflecting, 2) both boundaries are absorbing. For each type of the boundary conditions we consider two types of initial conditions: a) initial number of particles N is given, b) initial concentration of particles is given (N is random). In all four cases the tagged-particle survival probability exhibits different asymptotic behavior. When the both boundaries are absorbing we a…
Results of analytic and numerical investigations of first-passage properties of equilibrium fluctuations of monatomic steps on a vicinal surface are reviewed. Both temporal and spatial persistence and survival probabilities, as well as the probability of persistent large deviations are considered. Results of experiments in which dynamical scanning tunneling microscopy is used to evaluate these first-passage properties for steps with different microscopic mechanisms of mass transport are also presented and interpreted in terms of theoretical predictions for appropriate models. Effects of discre…
Spatial step edge fluctuations on a multi-component surface of Al/Si(111)-(root3 x root3) were measured via scanning tunneling microscopy over a temperature range of 720K-1070K, for step lengths of L = 65-160 nm. Even though the time scale of fluctuations of steps on this surface varies by orders of magnitude over the indicated temperature ranges, measured first-passage spatial persistence and survival probabilities are temperature independent. The power law functional form for spatial persistence probabilities is confirmed and the symmetric spatial persistence exponent is measured to be theta…
A recursive formula for the $n^\text{th}$ survival function and the $n^\text{th}$ first passage time distribution for jump and diffusion processes. Applications to the pricing of $n^\text{th}$-to-default CDS
We derive the first-passage-time statistics of a Brownian motion driven by an exponential time-dependent drift up to a threshold. This process corresponds to the signal integration in a simple neuronal model supplemented with an adaptation-like current and reaching the threshold for the first time represents the condition for declaring a spike. Based on the backward Fokker-Planck formulation, we consider the survival probability of this process in a domain restricted by an absorbent boundary. The solution is given as an expansion in terms of the intensity of the time-dependent drift, which res…
For many stochastic processes, the probability $S(t)$ of not-having reached a target in unbounded space up to time $t$ follows a slow algebraic decay at long times, $S(t)\sim S_0/t^θ$. This is typically the case of symmetric compact (i.e. recurrent) random walks. While the persistence exponent $θ$ has been studied at length, the prefactor $S_0$, which is quantitatively essential, remains poorly characterized, especially for non-Markovian processes. Here we derive explicit expressions for $S_0$ for a compact random walk in unbounded space by establishing an analytic relation with the mean first…
We study the survival probability and the corresponding first passage time density of fractional Brownian motion confined to a two-dimensional open wedge domain with absorbing boundaries. By analytical arguments and numerical simulation we show that in the long time limit the first passage time density scales as t**{-1+pi*(2H-2)/(2*Theta)} in terms of the Hurst exponent H and the wedge angle Theta. We discuss this scaling behaviour in connection with the reaction kinetics of FBM particles in a one-dimensional domain.
We show that for a subdiffusive continuous time random walk with scale-free waiting time distribution the first-passage dynamics on a finite interval can be optimised by introduction of a piecewise linear potential barrier. Analytical results for the survival probability and first-passage density based on the fractional Fokker-Planck equation are shown to agree well with Monte Carlo simulations results. As an application we discus an improved deign for efficient translocation of gradient copolymers compared to homopolymer translocation in a quasi-equilibrium approximation.
In one-dimensional systems, the dynamics of a Brownian particle are governed by the force derived from a potential as well as by diffusion properties. In this work, we obtain the first-passage-time statistics of a Brownian particle driven by an arbitrary potential with an exponential temporally decaying superimposed field up to a prescribed threshold. The general system analyzed here describes the sub-threshold signal integration of integrate-and-fire neuron models, of any kind, supplemented by an adaptation-like current, whereas the first-passage-time corresponds to the declaration of a spike…
We present the analysis of the first passage time problem on a finite interval for the generalized Wiener process that is driven by Lévy stable noises. The complexity of the first passage time statistics (mean first passage time, cumulative first passage time distribution) is elucidated together with a discussion of the proper setup of corresponding boundary conditions that correctly yield the statistics of first passages for these non-Gaussian noises. The validity of the method is tested numerically and compared against analytical formulae when the stability index $α$ approaches 2, recovering…
Analytic and Monte Carlo Approximations to the Distribution of the First Passage Time of the Drifted Diffusion with Stochastic Resetting and Mixed Boundary Conditions
The paper addresses Brownian motion in the logarithmic potential with time-dependent strength, $U(x,t) = g(t) \log(x)$, subject to the absorbing boundary at the origin of coordinates. Such model can represent kinetics of diffusion-controlled reactions of charged molecules or escape of Brownian particles over a time-dependent entropic barrier at the end of a biological pore. We present a simple asymptotic theory which yields the long-time behavior of both the survival probability (first-passage properties) and the moments of the particle position (dynamics). The asymptotic survival probability,…
A rapidly increasing number of systems is identified in which the stochastic motion of tracer particles follows the Brownian law $\langle\mathbf{r}^2(t) \rangle\simeq Dt$ yet the distribution of particle displacements is strongly non-Gaussian. A central approach to describe this effect is the diffusing diffusivity (DD) model in which the diffusion coefficient itself is a stochastic quantity, mimicking heterogeneities of the environment encountered by the tracer particle on its path. We here quantify in terms of analytical and numerical approaches the first passage behaviour of the DD model. We…
In this paper, we consider discrete time random walks on the pseudofractal scale-free web (PSFW) and we study analytically the related first passage properties. First, we classify the nodes of the PSFW into different levels and propose a method to derive the generation function of the first passage probability from an arbitrary starting node to the absorbing domain, which is located at one or more nodes of low-level (i.e., nodes with large degree). Then, we calculate exactly the first passage probability, the survival probability, the mean and the variance of first passage time by using the ge…
The escape from a given domain is one of the fundamental problems in statistical physics and the theory of stochastic processes. Here, we explore properties of the escape of an inertial particle driven by Lévy noise from a bounded domain, restricted by two absorbing boundaries.Presence of two absorbing boundaries assures that the escape process can be characterized by the finite mean first passage time. The detailed analysis of escape kinetics shows that properties of the mean first passage time for the integrated Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process driven by Lévy noise are closely related to properti…
We present a unified framework for first-passage time and residence time of random walks in finite one-dimensional disordered biased systems. The derivation is based on exact expansion of the backward master equation in cumulants. The dependence on initial condition, system size, and bias strength is explicitly studied for models with weak and strong disorder. Application to thermally activated processes is also developed.
Evaluating the completion time of a random algorithm or a running stochastic process is a valuable tip not only from a purely theoretical, but also pragmatic point of view. In the formal sense, this kind of a task is specified in terms of the first-passage time statistics. Although first-passage properties of diffusive processes, usually modeled by different types of the linear differential equations, are permanently explored with unflagging intensity, there still exists noticeable niche in this subject concerning the study of the non-linear diffusive processes. Therefore, the objective of the…
We survey recent results on first-passage processes in unbounded cones and their applications to ordering of particles undergoing Brownian motion in one dimension. We first discuss the survival probability S(t) that a diffusing particle, in arbitrary spatial dimension, remains inside a conical domain up to time t. In general, this quantity decays algebraically S ~ t^{-beta} in the long-time limit. The exponent beta depends on the opening angle of the cone and the spatial dimension, and it is root of a transcendental equation involving the associated Legendre functions. The exponent becomes a f…
We study first-passage properties for a particle that diffuses either inside or outside of generalized paraboloids, defined by y=a(x_1^2+...+x_{d-1}^2)^{p/2} where p>1, with absorbing boundaries. When the particle is inside the paraboloid, the survival probability S(t) generically decays as a stretched exponential, ln(S) ~ -t^{(p-1)/(p+1)}, independent of the spatial dimensional. For a particle outside the paraboloid, the dimensionality governs the asymptotic decay, while the exponent p specifying the paraboloid is irrelevant. In two and three dimensions, S ~ t^{-1/4} and S ~(ln t)^{-1}, respe…
We study a reaction-diffusion process that involves two species of atoms, immobile and diffusing. We assume that initially only immobile atoms, uniformly distributed throughout the entire space, are present. Diffusing atoms are injected at the origin by a source which is turned on at time t=0. When a diffusing atom collides with an immobile atom, the two atoms form an immobile stable molecule. The region occupied by molecules is asymptotically spherical with radius growing as t^{1/d} in d>=2 dimensions. We investigate the survival probability that a diffusing atom has not become a part of a mo…
We study a stochastic process $X_t$ related to the Bessel and the Rayleigh processes, with various applications in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, finance and other fields. The stochastic differential equation is $dX_t = (nD/X_t) dt + \sqrt{2D} dW_t$, where $W_t$ is the Wiener process. Due to the singularity of the drift term for $X_t = 0$, different natures of boundary at the origin arise depending on the real parameter $n$: entrance, exit, and regular. For each of them we calculate analytically and numerically the probability density functions of first-passage times or first-exit tim…
We investigate the motion of a run-and-tumble particle (RTP) in one dimension. We find the exact probability distribution of the particle with and without diffusion on the infinite line, as well as in a finite interval. In the infinite domain, this probability distribution approaches a Gaussian form in the long-time limit, as in the case of a regular Brownian particle. At intermediate times, this distribution exhibits unexpected multi-modal forms. In a finite domain, the probability distribution reaches a steady state form with peaks at the boundaries, in contrast to a Brownian particle. We al…
We discuss a problem of cyclization of a polymer molecule, which is an important example of reaction in a system showing strongly non-Markovian behavior on the timescales of interest. We show that the knowledge of the joint three-time probability distribution of the end-to-end distance is sufficient for the full description of the cyclization kinetics, so that the survival probability follows rigorously as a solution of the Volterra integral equation. The corresponding kinetics can easily be evaluated numerically. We moreover discuss how do some well-known approximations appear from this exact…
We explore the effect of stochastic resetting on the first-passage properties of space-dependent diffusion in presence of a constant bias. In our analytically tractable model system, a particle diffusing in a linear potential $U(x)\proptoμ|x|$ with a spatially varying diffusion coefficient $D(x)=D_0|x|$ undergoes stochastic resetting, i.e., returns to its initial position $x_0$ at random intervals of time, with a constant rate $r$. Considering an absorbing boundary placed at $x_a<x_0$, we first derive an exact expression of the survival probability of the diffusing particle in the Laplace spac…
We study the thermal Markovian diffusion of tracer particles in a 2D medium with spatially-varying diffusivity $D(r)$, mimicking recently measured, heterogeneous maps of the apparent diffusion coefficient in biological cells. For this heterogeneous diffusion process (HDP) we analyse the mean squared displacement (MSD) of the tracer particles, the time averaged MSD, the spatial probability density function, and the first passage time dynamics from the cell boundary to the nucleus. Moreover we examine the non-ergodic properties of this process which are important for the correct physical interpr…
We consider one-dimensional discrete-time random walks (RWs) in the presence of finite size traps of length $\ell$ over which the RWs can jump. We study the survival probability of such RWs when the traps are periodically distributed and separated by a distance $L$. We obtain exact results for the mean first-passage time and the survival probability in the special case of a double-sided exponential jump distribution. While such RWs typically survive longer than if they could not leap over traps, their survival probability still decreases exponentially with the number of steps. The decay rate o…
Systems where resource availability approaches a critical threshold are common to many engineering and scientific applications and often necessitate the estimation of first passage time statistics of a Brownian motion (Bm) driven by time-dependent drift and diffusion coefficients. Modeling such systems requires solving the associated Fokker-Planck equation subject to an absorbing barrier. Transitional probabilities are derived via the method of images, whose applicability to time dependent problems is shown to be limited to state-independent drift and diffusion coefficients that only depend on…
We consider a mortal random walker on a family of hierarchical graphs in the presence of some trap sites. The configuration comprising the graph, the starting point of the walk, and the locations of the trap sites is taken to be exactly self-similar as one goes from one generation of the family to the next. Under these circumstances, the total probability that the walker hits a trap is determined exactly as a function of the single-step survival probability $q$ of the mortal walker. On the $n^{\rm th}$ generation graph of the family, this probability is shown to be given by the $n^{\rm th}$ it…
We investigate the first passage time t_{j,N} to a given chemical or Euclidean distance of the first j of a set of N>>1 independent random walkers all initially placed on a site of a disordered medium. To solve this order-statistics problem we assume that, for short times, the survival probability (the probability that a single random walker is not absorbed by a hyperspherical surface during some time interval) decays for disordered media in the same way as for Euclidean and some class of deterministic fractal lattices. This conjecture is checked by simulation on the incipient percolation aggr…
We consider the motion of a randomly accelerated particle in one dimension under stochastic resetting mechanism. Denoting the position and velocity by $x$ and $v$ respectively, we consider two different resetting protocols - (i) complete resetting: here both $x$ and $v$ reset to their initial values $x_0$ and $v_0$ at a constant rate $r$, (ii) partial resetting: here only $x$ resets to $x_0$ while $v$ evolves without interruption. For complete resetting, we find that the particle attains stationary state in both $x$ and $v$. We compute the non-equilibrium joint stationary state of $x$ and $v$ …
The effects of sampling rate and total measurement time have been determined for single-point measurements of step fluctuations within the context of first-passage properties. Time dependent STM has been used to evaluate step fluctuations on Ag(111) films grown on mica as a function of temperature (300-410 K), on screw dislocations on the facets of Pb crystallites at 320K, and on Al-terminated Si(111) over the temperature range 770K - 970K. Although the fundamental time constant for step fluctuations on Ag and Al/Si varies by orders of magnitude over the temperature ranges of measurement, no d…

Lévy Flights are paradigmatic generalised random walk processes, in which the independent stationary increments---the "jump lengths"---are drawn from an $α$-stable jump length distribution with long-tailed, power-law asymptote. As a result, the variance of Lévy Flights diverges and the trajectory is characterised by occasional extremely long jumps. Such long jumps significantly decrease the probability to revisit previous points of visitation, rendering Lévy Flights efficient search processes in one and two dimensions. To further quantify their precise property as random search strategies we h…
In this work we consider the first encounter problems between a fixed and/or mobile target A and a moving trap B on Bethe Lattices and Cayley trees. The survival probability (SP) of the target A on the both kinds of structures are analyzed analytically and compared. On Bethe Lattices, the results show that the fixed target will still prolong its survival time, whereas, on Cayley trees, there are some initial positions where the target should move to prolong its survival time. The mean first encounter time (MFET) for mobile target A is evaluated numerically and compared with the mean first pass…

The first passage search of a diffusing target (prey) by multiple searchers (predators) in confinement is an important problem in the stochastic process literature. While the analogous problem in open space has been studied in some details, a systematic study in confined space is still lacking. In this paper, we study the first passage times for this problem in 1,2 and $3-$dimensions. Due to confinement, the survival probability of the target takes a form $\sim e^{-t/τ}$ at large times $t$. The characteristic capture timescale $τ$ associated with the rare capture events are rather challenging …
We present a classical, mesoscopic derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation for diffusion in an expanding medium. To this end, we take a conveniently generalized Chapman-Kolmogorov equation as the starting point. We obtain an analytical expression for the Green's function (propagator) and investigate both analytically and numerically how this function and the associated moments behave. We also study first-passage properties in expanding hyperspherical geometries. We show that in all cases the behavior is determined to a great extent by the so-called Brownian conformal time $τ(t)$, which we def…
We investigate restricted diffusion in a bounded domain towards a small partially reactive target in three- and higher-dimensional spaces. We propose a simple explicit approximation for the principal eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with mixed Robin-Neumann boundary conditions. This approximation involves the harmonic capacity and the surface area of the target, the volume of the confining domain, the diffusion coefficient and the reactivity. The accuracy of the approximation is checked by using a finite-elements method. The proposed approximation determines also the mean first-reaction time…
Within a concept of the fractional diffusion equation and subordination, the paper examines the influence of a competition between long waiting times and long jumps on the escape from the potential well. Applying analytical arguments and numerical methods, we demonstrate that the presence of long waiting times distributed according to a power-law distribution with a diverging mean leads to very general asymptotic properties of the survival probability. The observed survival probability asymptotically decays like a power-law whose form is not affected by the value of the exponent characterizing…
