The quasiparticle states around a nonmagnetic impurity in electron-doped iron-based superconductors with spin-density-wave (SDW) order are investigated as a function of doping and impurity scattering strength. In the undoped sample, where a pure SDW state exists, two impurity-induced resonance peaks are observed around the impurity site and they are shifted to higher (lower) energies as the strength of the positive (negative) scattering potential (SP) is increased. For the doped samples where the SDW order and the superconducting order coexist, the main feature is the existence of sharp in-gap resonance peaks whose positions and intensity depend on the strength of the SP and the doping concentration. In all cases, the local density of states exhibits clear $C_2$ symmetry. We also note that in the doped cases, the impurity will divide the system into two sublattices with distinct values of magnetic order. Here we use the band structure of a two-orbital model, which considers the asymmetry of the As atoms above and below the Fe-Fe plane. This model is suitable to study the properties of the surface layers in the iron-pnictides and should be more appropriate to describe the scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.
We review the progress of nonmagnetic impurity doping study on the Fe-based superconductors. On the theoretical side, two highly potential candidates for the pairing symmetry order parameter, i.e. the multi-gap s++ and s+- wave models, have been proposed but continuously debated. The debate arises because of the complex gap structure, exceptive magnetic and metallic behaviors of Fe-based superconductors which may make the influences of nonmagnetic defects varied in chemical potential, impurity disorder, inter- and intra-band scattering strength, and electron localization, and hence difficulty …
The superconducting state around a well isolated nonmagnetic impurity in the high-Tc superconductors is studied using the two-dimensional t-J model. The spatial dependence of the order parameter and the local density of states are obtained from the numerical diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation derived using the Gutzwiller approximation. We find a zero-energy peak in the local density of states around the impurity. Different from the previous results on a vortex or surfaces in the t-J model, the splitting of zero-energy peak is not found. The zero-energy states corresponding to…
We have investigated the in-gap bound states (IGBS) induced by a single nonmagnetic impurity in multiband superconductors with incipient bands. Contrary to the naive expectation, we found that even if the superconducting (SC) order parameter is sign-preserving s-wave on the Fermi surfaces, the incipient bands may still affect the appearance and locations of the IGBS, although the gap between the incipient bands and the Fermi level is much larger than the SC gap. Therefore in scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, the IGBS induced by a single nonmagnetic impurity are not the definitive evid…
The effect of a nonmagnetic impurity on the subgap electronic spectrum in a d-wave superconductor in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is investigated. In a pure system, the spatial variation of the order parameter (OP) of the FFLO state forms a two-dimensional lattice, and there exist two types of sub-gap quasi-particle states. Our numerical iterations indicate that an OP saddle point, and slightly less so energetically, an OP extremum favor to be pinned at the impurity site. The local density of states and the fixed-bias map reveal the subtle effects of an impurity on the subgap ene…
We investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects in two-band superconductors, focusing on the effects of interband scatterings. Within the Born approximation, it is known that interband scatterings mix order parameters in the two bands. In particular, only one averaged energy gap appears in the excitation spectrum in the dirty limit. [G. Gusman: J. Phys. Chem. Solids {\bf 28} (1967) 2327.] In this paper, we take into account the interband scattering within the $t$-matrix approximation beyond the Born approximation in the previous work. We show that, although the interband scattering is responsible …
Recently Chakravarty {\em et al.} proposed an ordered $d$-density wave (DDW) state as an explanation of the pseudogap phase in underdoped high-temperature cuprates. We study the competition between the DDW and superconducting ordering based on an effective mean-field Hamiltonian. We are mainly concerned with the effect of the DDW ordering on the electronic state around a single nonmagnetic impurity. We find that a single subgap resonance peak appears in the local density of state around the impurity. In the unitary limit, the position of this resonance peak is always located at $E_r=-μ$ with r…
The low energy band structure of the FeAs based superconductors is fitted by a tight binding model with two Fe ions per unit cell and two degenerate orbitals per Fe ion. Based on this, superconductivity with extended s-wave pairing symmetry of the form $\cos k_x +\cos k_y$ is examined. The local density of states near an impurity is also investigated by using T-matrix approach. For the nonmagnetic scattering potential, we found that there exist two major resonances inside the gap. The height of the resonance peaks depends on the strength of the impurity potential. These in-gap resonances are o…
We study the effect of a single non-magnetic impurity in A$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_{2}$ (A=K, Rb, or Cs) superconductors by considering various pairing states based on a three-orbital model consistent with the photoemission experiments. The local density of states on and near the impurity site has been calculated by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. The impurity-induced in-gap bound states are found only for attractive impurity scattering potential, as in the cases of doping of Co or Ni, which is characterized by the strong particle-hole asymmetry, in the nodeless $d_{x^…
We theoretically study the effect of a nonmagnetic impurity in heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ within a realistic band model and the T-matrix approximation approach. By considering two known possible pairing symmetry candidates $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ and $d_{xy}$, we find that although both total density of states exhibit a similar V-shaped gaplike feature, only the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave pairing symmetry gives rise to robust intragap impurity resonance states reflected by the resonance peaks near the Fermi energy in the local density of states. These features can be readily probed by sca…
The low temperature heat capacity investigations on pure(y=0) and Zn-doped La1.84Sr0.16Cu1-yZnyO4 samples have been performed in the interval of 1.8-60K by a new method of high-precision, pulsed differential calorimetry (PDC), which provides the measurements under the equilibrium conditions, in contrast to commonly used differential scanning calorimeters (DSC). For these systems a new heat capacity anomaly was observed, which is associated with Zn impurities and has the form of one wide peak. It does not show a phonon character shifts towards the higher temperatures with the increase of Zn con…
In order to investigate the effects of nonmagnetic impurities in strongly correlated systems, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations have been carried out for the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model with one nonmagnetic impurity. Using a bare impurity potential which is onsite and attractive, magnetic and single-particle properties have been calculated. The QMC results show that giant oscillations develop in the Knight shift response around the impurity site due to the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. These results are useful for interpreting the NMR data on Li and Zn substituted lay…
We study nonmagnetic impurity effects in MgB$_{2}$ using the quasiclassical equations of superconductivity for a weak-coupling two-band model. Parameters in the model are fixed so as to reproduce experiments on MgB$_{2}$ as closely as possible. The quasiparticle density of states and the specific heat are calculated for various values of the interband impurity scattering. The density of states changes gradually from a two-gap structure into the conventional single-gap structure as the interband scattering increases. It is found that the excitation threshold is not a monotonic function of the i…
Local magnetic properties around a nonmagnetic impurity are investigated in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. We consider a model two-dimensional d-wave superconductor with strong antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations and calculate the spin susceptibility around the impurity. We show that the uniform susceptibility, which is usually suppressed in spin-singlet superconductivity, is enhanced at low temperatures around the impurity when the impurity scattering is in the unitarity limit. This anomalous behavior is more remarkable when the impurity potential is extended spatially and the AF spin …
We study a Hubbard model with a strong onsite impurity potential based on an improved fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation, which we call the GVI-FLEX method. We find that (i) both local and staggered susceptibilities are strongly enhanced around the impurity. By this reason, (ii) the quasiparticle lifetime as well as the local density of states (DOS) are strongly suppressed in a wide area around the impurity (like a Swiss cheese hole), which causes the ``huge residual resistivity'' beyond the s-wave unitary scattering value. These results by the GVI method naturally explains the various …
We observed a drastic Tc suppression caused by no more than 3 at.% of Zn doped to the optimized superconductor LaFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 26 K). The electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements suggested that it is likely due to impurity scatterings rather than losing the metallic nature, seeming to support the s+/- pairing model proposed for the Fe pnictide superconductor.
The quasiparticle recombination time in superconducting films, consisting of the standard electron-phonon interaction and a yet to be identified low temperature process, is studied for different densities of magnetic and nonmagnetic atoms. For both Ta and Al, implanted with Mn, Ta and Al, we observe an increase of the recombination rate. We conclude that the enhancement of recombination is not due to the magnetic moment, but arises from an enhancement of disorder.
We study the effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the local density of states (LDOS) in s-wave superconductors. The quasiclassical equations of superconductivity are solved selfconsistently to show how LDOS evolves with impurity concentration. The spatially averaged zero-energy LDOS is a linear function of magnetic induction in low fields, N(E=0)=cB/H_{c2}, for all impurity concentration. The constant of proportionality "c" depends weakly on the electron mean free path. We present numerical data for differential conductance and spatial profile of zero-energy LDOS which can help in estimating th…
In nearly antiferromagnetic (AF) metals such as high-Tc superconductors (HTSC's), a single nonmagnetic impurity frequently causes nontrivial widespread change of the electronic states. To elucidate this long-standing issue, we study a Hubbard model with a strong onsite impurity potential based on an improved fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation, which we call the GV^I-FLEX method. This model corresponds to the HTSC with dilute nonmagnetic impurity concentration. We find that (i) both local and staggered susceptibilities are strongly enhanced around the impurity. By this reason, (ii) the q…
The local quasiparticle density of states around a unitary impurity with a Kondo-like magnetic moment induced at its nearest neighbors in a d-wave superconductor is studied within the slave-boson mean-field approach. The Hamiltonian is exactly diagonalized and the results are obtained self-consistently. We show that the interference between the strong impurity potential scattering and the Kondo effect leads to novel quasiparticle spectra around the impurity, which are strikingly different from the case of a single unitary or magnetic impurity. The recent STM image of the local differential tun…
In a recent Letter [PRL 103, 186402 (2009)], the energy band structure of Fe-As-based superconductors is fitted with a tight-binding model with two Fe ions per unit cell and two degenerate xz and yz orbitals per Fe ion. The author claims that the proposed model, which differs markedly from a model previously used by other authors for the same two orbitals in the same compounds, possesses the symmetry required to describe the Fe-As planes in iron-pnictide superconductors. In this comment we argue that this is not the case.
We perform the numerically exact diagonalization study of the t-J model with nonmagnetic impurities to clarify the relation between Zn impurities and the stripes. By examining the hole-hole correlation function for a two-hole \sqrt{18}x\sqrt{18} cluster with a single impurity, we find that the impurity has a tendency to stabilize vertical charge stripes. This tendency is caused by the gain of the kinetic energy of holes moving along the stripes that are formed avoiding the impurity.
A strong nonmagnetic impurity can induce a resonance state in the d-wave superconducting state. As far as magnetic properties are concerned, this resonance state behaves effectively like a free moment. It leads to a Curie-Weiss-like magnetic susceptibility in an intermediate temperature regime below $T_{c}$. From the impurity susceptibility, the effective moment of the resonance state is deduced and compared with experiments. The contribution of the resonance to the magnetic susceptibility can account for the main feature of the NMR spectra in overdoped high-$T_c$ materials. In the underdoped …
Both impurity- and magnetic-field-induced quasiparticle states in chiral $p$-wave superconductors are investigated theoretically by solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations self-consistently. At the strong scattering limit, we find that a universal state bound to the impurity can be induced for both a single nonmagnetic impurity and a single magnetic impurity. Furthermore, we find that different chiral order parameters and the corresponding supercurrents have uniform distributions around linear impurities. Calculations of the local density of states in the presence of an external magnetic f…
The Kondo effects of an Anderson impurity embedded into a d-wave superconductor is studied. Within the slave-boson mean-field approach, the derived Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved via exact diagonalization. We show that a critical coupling strength, above which the Kondo effect takes place, exists regardless of whether the band particle-hole symmetry is present or not. The resonant quasiparticle peaks are found in the local density of states (LDOS) both directly at the impurity and around its neighbors, which is in sharp contrast to the case of nonmagnetic unitary impurities, where t…
By using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) orders, the local staggered magnetization distribution due to nonmagnetic impurities in cuprate superconductors is investigated. From this, the net magnetic moment induced by a single or double impurities can be obtained. We show that the net moment induced by a single impurity corresponds to a local spin with S_z=0, or 1/2 depending on the strength of the AF interaction and the impurity scattering. When two impurities are placed at the nearest neighboring sites, the net moment is always zero. For t…
We report comparative substitution effects of nonmagnetic Ti^(4+) and magnetic Ir^(4+) impurities for Ru^(4+) in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. We found that both impurities suppress the superconductivity completely at a concentration of approximately 0.15%, reflecting the high sensitivity to translational symmetry breaking in Sr2RuO4. In addition, a rapid enhancement of residual resistivity is in quantitative agreement with unitarity-limit scattering. Our result suggests that both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities in Sr2RuO4 act as strong potential scatterers, similar to the nonma…
In multiband superconductors, multiple collective modes exist associated with the multiple order parameters. Oscillations of the amplitude and the relative phase of the order parameters are called Higgs and Leggett modes, respectively. Recently, it has been suggested that nonmagnetic impurity scattering would enhance nonlinear coupling between the Higgs mode and an electromagnetic wave with a frequency located in the superconducting gap region, while its effect on the Leggett mode is still unresolved. Here, we theoretically investigated the nonlinear optical response of multiband Bardeen-Coope…
We studied the effects of nonmagnetic impurities on high-temperature superconductors by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations on a two-dimensional lattice via exact diagonalization technique in a fully self-consistent way. We found that s-wave order parameter is almost unaffected by impurities at low concentrations while $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter exhibits a strong linear decrease with impurity concentration. We evaluated the critical impurity concentration $n_i^c$ at which superconductivity ceases to be 0.1 which is in good agreement with experimental values. We also investigated…
Local electronic effects in the vicinity of an impurity provide pivotal insight into the origin of unconventional superconductivity, especially when the materials are located on the edge of magnetic instability. In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, a strong suppression of superconductivity and appearance of low-energy bound states are clearly observed near nonmagnetic impurities. However, whether these features are common to other strongly correlated superconductors has not been established experimentally. Here, we report the {$in$} {$situ$} scanning tunneling microscopy observation of…
Measurements of the local density of states near impurities can be useful for identifying the superconducting gap structure in alkali doped iron chalcogenide superconductors K_xFe_{2-y}Se_2. Here, we study the effects of nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities within a nearest neighbor d-wave and next-nearest neighbor s-wave superconducting state. For both repulsive and attractive nonmagnetic impurities, it is shown that sub-gap bound states exist only for d-wave superconductors with the positions of these bound states depending rather sensitively on the electron doping level. Further, for such di…
Due to the node structure of the gap in a d-wave superconductor, the presence of impurities generates a finite density of quasiparticle excitations at zero temperature. Since these impurity-induced quasiparticles are both generated and scattered by impurities, prior calculations indicate a universal limit (Ω-> 0, T -> 0) where the transport coefficients obtain scattering-independent values, depending only on the velocity anisotropy v_f/v_2. We improve upon prior results, including the contributions of vertex corrections and Fermi liquid corrections in our calculations of universal limit electr…
We perform large-scale numerical calculations self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in the magnetic field together with random impurities to directly demonstrate the typical quasi-particle interference (QPI) in the presence of vortices as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy experiments in unconventional superconductors. The calculations reveal that vortex itself never works as a scatter causing the QPI pattern but vortex core containing impurity brings about the enhancement of the sign-preserving QPI peaks. Its origin is Andreev bound-states dist…
Based on a minimal two-orbital model [Tai {\it et al.}, Europhys. Lett. \textbf{103}, 67001 (2013)], which captures the canonical electron-hole-doping phase diagram of the iron-pnictide BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we study the evolution of quasiparticle states as a function of doping using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with and without a single impurity. Analyzing the density of states of uniformly doped samples, we are able to identify the origin of the two superconducting gaps observed in optimally hole- or electron-doped systems. The local density of states (LDOS) is then examined near a singl…
Two scenarios, i.e., the anisotropic s-wave pairing (the s-wave scenario) and the d-wave pairing coexisting with antiferromagnetism (the coexisting scenario) have been introduced to understand some of seemingly s-wave like behaviors in electron doped cuprates. We considered the electronic structure in the presence of a nonmagnetic impurity in the coexistence scenario. We found that even if the AF order opens a full gap in quasi-particle excitation spectra, the mid-gap resonant peaks in local density of states (LDoS) around an impurity can still be observed in the presence of a d-wave pairing g…
We consider the effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities on the superheating field $H_s$ in a type-II superconductor. We solved the Eilenberger equations, which take into account the nonlinear pairbreaking of Meissner screening currents, and calculated $H_s(T)$ for arbitrary temperatures and impurity concentrations in a single-band s-wave superconductor with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter. At low temperatures nonmagnetic impurities suppress a weak maximum in $H_s(T)$ which has been predicted for the clean limit, resulting instead in a maximum of $H_s$ as a function of impurity concentr…
We perform self-consistent studies of two-dimensional (2D) $s$-wave topological superconductivity (TSC) with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. In particular, we examine the effects of a nonmagnetic impurity in detail and show that the nature of the spin-polarised midgap bound state varies significantly depending on the material parameters. Most notably, a nonmagnetic impurity in a 2D $s$-wave topological superconductor can act like a magnetic impurity in a conventional $s$-wave superconductor, leading to phase transitions of the ground s…
A theory of the local magnetic response of a nonmagnetic impurity in a doped antiferromagnet, as relevant to the normal state in cuprates, is presented. It is based on the assumption of the overdamped collective mode in the bulk system and on the evidence, that equal-time spin correlations are only weakly renormalized in the vicinity of the impurity. The theory relates the Kondo-like behavior of the local susceptibility to the anomalous temperature dependence of the bulk magnetic susceptibility, where the observed increase of the Kondo temperature with doping reflects the crossover to the Ferm…
We theoretically study the quasiparticle resonance states around a nonmagnetic impurity in cuprate superconductors based on t-t'-J-U model. The purpose of introducing the Coulomb repulsive interaction U is to partially impose the double occupancy constraint by employing the Gutzwiller projected mean-field approximation. We determine the spatial variation of the order parameter and the local density of states (LDOS) by self-consistently solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find that in the large U limit, a zero-energy resonance peak in the LDOS indeed appears for the impurity potential in…
The effects of nonmagnetic impurities on the Q=(pi,pi) spin-fluctuation spectral weight Im chi(Q,omega) are studied within the framework of the two-dimensional Hubbard model using the random phase approximation. In the first part of the paper, the effects of the nonmagnetic impurities on the magnetic susceptibility of the noninteracting (U=0) system, chi_0(Q,omega), are calculated with the self-energy and the vertex corrections using various forms of the effective electron-impurity interaction. Here, the range and the strength of the impurity potential are varied as well as the concentration o…
The quantum interference between two nonmagnetic impurities is studied numerically in both the d-wave superconducting (DSC) and the d-density wave (DDW) state. In all calculations we include the tunnelling through excited states from the CuO$_2$ planes to the BiO layer probed by the STM tip. Compared to the single impurity case, a systematic study of the modulations in the two-impurity local density of states can distinguish between the DSC or DDW states. This is important if the origin of the pseudogap phase is caused by preformed pairs or DDW order. Furthermore, in the DSC state the study of…
Scanning tunneling microscopy can provide a probe for the detailed study of quasiparticle states in high-Tc superconductors. We propose that it can also be used to acquire specific information about impurity-induced quasiparticle states and the superconducting order-parameter structure. In particular, the local density of states is found to be sensitive to impurity-induced resonances and to the symmetry of the order parameter.
Nonmagnetic impurity effect was studied on the n-type Fe-based superconductor BaFe1.87Co0.13As2 (Tc = 25 K) by a successful Zn substitution for Fe up to 7 at.%. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and Hall coefficient measurements indicated that Tc linearly decreases with the Zn concentration and disappears at 7 at.%. The result is quantitatively comparable with what was observed for YBCO, while it disagrees with a recent report for the p-type Ba0.5K0.5Fe2As2. Fragile SC against a nonmagnetic impurity was first confirmed for the n-type 122 Fe-based superconductor.
We consider a defect in a strongly correlated host metal and discuss, within a slave boson mean field formalism for the $t-t'-J$ model, the formation of an induced paramagnetic moment which is extended over nearby sites. We study in particular an impurity in a metallic band, suitable for modelling the optimally doped cuprates, in a regime where the impurity moment is paramagnetic. The form of the local susceptibility as a function of temperature and doping is found to agree well with recent NMR experiments, without including screening processes leading to the Kondo effect.
The impurity problems within vortex cores of two-dimensional s-wave and chiral p-wave superconductors are studied numerically in the framework of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity and self-consistent Born approximation under a trial form of the pair potential. The dispersion and impurity scattering rate (the inverse of the relaxation time) of the Andreev bound state localized in vortex cores are deduced from the angular-resoloved local density of states. The energy dependence of the impurity scattering rates depends on the pairing symmetry; particularly, in the chiral p-wave vorte…
Experiments show that the Cooper pair transport in the insulator phase that forms at thin film superconductor to insulator transitions (SIT) is simply activated. This activated behavior depends on the microscopic factors that drive the localization of the Cooper pairs. To test proposed models, we investigated how a perturbation that weakens Cooper pair binding, magnetic impurity doping, affects the characteristic activation energy, $T_0$. The data show that $T_0$ decreases monotonically with doping in films tuned farther from the SIT and increases and peaks in films that are closer to the SIT …
The recently observed properties of quasiparticle resonant states near impurities on the surface of superconducting BSCCO demonstrate that in-plane Andreev processes are either absent or phase-incoherent. Analysis of the spectral and spatial details of the electronic structure near a Zn impurity also suggest an effective magnetic component of the impurity potential. Further experiments are proposed to clarify whether the effective moments of nearby impurities are correlated.
The specific heat jump at a normal-superconducting phase transition in an anisotropic superconductor with nonmagnetic impurities is calculated within a weak-coupling mean field approximation. It is shown that its dependence on the impurity concentration is remarkably different for d-wave and (d+s)-wave states. This effect may be used as a test for the presence of an s-wave admixture in the cuprates.
We study subgap states induced by a single impurity in an s-wave superconductor with suppressed pairing. For concreteness, we consider a bulk superconductor containing a normal spherical region. We find that a point impurity in this system induces two Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states inside the minigap instead of one, which one would have in a homogeneous superconductor. Moreover, the subgap states appear even if the impurity is nonmagnetic. We prove that this result actually holds almost for any superconductor with a real and spatially inhomogeneous order parameter, if the quasiparticle spectrum is ga…
Qualitative differences in the spectrum of a superconductor near magnetic impurity pairs with moments aligned parallel and antiparallel are derived. A proposal is made for a new, nonmagnetic scanning tunneling spectroscopy of magnetic impurity interactions based on these differences. Near parallel impurity pairs the mid-gap localized spin-polarized states associated with each impurity hybridize and form bonding and anti-bonding molecular states with different energies. For antiparallel impurity moments the states do not hybridize; they are degenerate.
We present a theory of combined nonmagnetic and magnetic impurity scattering in anisotropic superconductors accounting for the momentum-dependent impurity potential. Applying the model to the d-wave superconducting state, we obtain a quantitative agreement with the initial suppression of the critical temperature due to Zn and Ni substitutions as well as electron irradiation defects in the cuprates. We suggest, that the unequal pair-breaking effect of Zn and Ni may be related to a different nature of the magnetic moments induced by these impurities.
Iron-based high temperature superconductivity develops when the `parent' antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic phase is suppressed, typically by introduction of dopant atoms. But their impact on atomic-scale electronic structure, while in theory quite complex, is unknown experimentally. What is known is that a strong transport anisotropy with its resistivity maximum along the crystal b-axis, develops with increasing concentration of dopant atoms; this `nematicity' vanishes when the `parent' phase disappears near the maximum superconducting Tc. The interplay between the electronic structure surroundin…
We investigate the role of a finite potential range of a nonmagnetic impurity for the local density of states in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. Impurity induced subgap resonances are modified by the appearance of further scattering channels beyond the $s$--wave scattering limit. The structure of the local density of states (DOS) in the vicinity of the impurity is significantly enhanced and therefore improves the possibility for observing the characteristic anisotropic spatial modulation of the local DOS in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor by scanning tunneling microscopy.
Effects of impurities and disorder on transport properties by electronic quasiparticles in superconducting iron pnictides are theoretically considered. The most prominent new features compared to the case of pure material should appear at high enough impurity concentration when a specific narrow band of conducting quasiparticle states can develop within the superconducting gap, around the position of localized impurity level by a single impurity center. The predicted specific threshold effects in the frequency dependent optical conductivity and temperature dependent thermal conductivity and al…
The impurity-induced quasiparticle interference(QPI) in the parent compounds of iron-pnictide superconductors is investigated based on a phenomenological two-orbital four-band model and T-matrix method. We find the QPI is sensitive to the value of the magnetic order which may vary from one compound to another. For small value of the magnetic order, the pattern of oscillation in the local density of states (LDOS) induced by the QPI exhibits two-dimensional characteristics, consistent with the standing wave state observed in the 1111 compound. For larger value of the magnetic order, the main fea…
The impurity is inherently manifest in cuprate superconductors, as cation substitution or intercalation is necessary for the introduction of charge carriers, and its influence on the electronic state is at the heart of a great debate in physics. Here based on the microscopic octet scattering model, the influence of the impurity scattering on the electronic structure of cuprate superconductors is investigated in terms of the self-consistent T-matrix approach. The impurity scattering self-energy is evaluated firstly in the Fermi-arc-tip approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scatteri…
The microscopic mechanism of circular currents induced in the vicinity of a non-magnetic impurity is analyzed for the (time-reversal symmetry breaking) chiral superconducting state ${\bf d}({\bf k}) = \hat{\bf z} (k_x \pm i k_y)$ which is very likely realized in Sr_2RuO_4. From the analytic, not self-consistent solution of the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations we find two types of quasiparticle states, a bound state and the continuum state. Through impurity scattering the condensate transfers angular momentum to the quasiparticle states which generate a circular current. At low temperature the co…
We observed a large decrease of Tc by no more than 3 at.% of Zn doped to the optimized superconductor LaFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 26 K), confirmed by measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Hall coefficient, and an electron probe micro-analysis. The rate ~9 K/% is remarkably higher than observations regarding nonmagnetic impurities. The Tc suppression is likely due to pair-breaking caused by scatterings associated with highly localized electronic state of Zn doped into the Fe2As2 layer. If this is true, the Zn result well accords with the t…
