The Fe$_3$O$_4$(111)/graphene/Ni(111) trilayer is proposed to be used as an ideal spin-filtering sandwich where the half-metallic properties of magnetite are used. Thin magnetite layers on graphene/Ni(111) were prepared via successive oxidation of thin iron layer predeposited on graphene/Ni(111) and formed system was investigated by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) of core levels as well as valence band. The electronic structure and structural quality of the graphene film sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers remains unchanged upon magnetite formation as confirmed by LEED and PES data.
Atomically thin semiconductors made from transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are model systems for investigations of strong light-matter interactions and applications in nanophotonics, opto-electronics and valley-tronics. However, the photoluminescence spectra of TMD monolayers display a large number of features that are particularly challenging to decipher. On a practical level, monochromatic TMD-based emitters would be beneficial for low-dimensional devices but this challenge is yet to be resolved. Here, we show that graphene, directly stacked onto TMD monolayers enables single and narro…

The conductivity of the system magnetic dielectric (EuO) - graphene channel - ferroelectric substrate was considered. The magnetic dielectric locally transforms the band spectrum of graphene by inducing an energy gap in it and making it spin-asymmetric with respect to the free electrons. The range of spontaneous polarization (2- 5)mC/m2 that can be easily realized in thin films of proper and incipient ferroelectrics, was under examination. It was demonstrated, that if the Fermi level in the graphene channel belongs to energy intervals where the graphene band spectrum, modified by EuO, becomes …
A commercially available membrane filter paper composed of mixed cellulose esters bearing typically an interconnected pore structure was transformed into a stimuli-responsive bilayer actuator by depositing a thin film of poly(ionic liquid)-modified graphene oxide sheets (GO-PIL) onto the filter paper. In acetone vapor, the as-synthesized bilayer actuator bent readily into multiple loops at a fast speed with the GO-PIL top film inwards. Upon pulling back into air the actuator recovered their original shape. The asymmetric swelling of the top GO-PIL film and the bottom porous filter paper toward…
We study the dissociative adsorption of methane at the surface of graphene. Free energy profiles, which include activation energies for different steps of the reaction, are computed from constrained ab initio molecular dynamics. At 300 K, the reaction barriers are much lower than experimental bond dissociation energies of gaseous methane, strongly indicating that graphene surface acts as a catalyst of methane decomposition. On the other hand, the barriers are still much higher than on nickel surface. Methane dissociation therefore occurs at a higher rate on nickel than on graphene. This reacti…
The main contribution of this paper is to study the spin caloritronic effects in defected graphene/silicene nanoribbon (GSNR) junctions. Each step-like GSNR is subjected to the ferromagnetic exchange and local external electric fields, and their responses are determined using the nonequilibrium Greens function (NEGF) approach. To further study the thermoelectric (TE) properties of the GSNRs, three defect arrangements of divacancies (DVs) are also considered for a larger system, and their responses are re-evaluated. The results demonstrate that the defected GSNRs with the DVs can provide an alm…
Ideal Spin Filters: Theoretical Study of Electron Transmission Through Ordered and Disordered Interfaces Between Ferromagnetic Metals and Semiconductors
We study the mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron, borophenes, by first-principles calculations. The recently synthesized borophene with 1/6 concentration of hollow hexagons (HH) is shown to have in-plane modulus C up to 210 N/m and bending stiffness as low as D = 0.39 eV. Thus, its Foppl-von Karman number per unit area, defined as C/D, reaches 568 nm-2, over twofold higher than graphene's value, establishing the borophene as one of the most flexible materials. Yet, the borophene has a specific modulus of 346 m2/s2 and ideal strengths of 16 N/m, rivaling those (453 m2/s2 and 34 …
Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's functions, we characterized the effect of surface termination on the electronic transport properties of nanoscale Cu slabs. With ideal, clean (111) surfaces and oxidized ones as baselines we explore the effect of capping the slabs with graphene, hexagonal boron nitrate, molybdenum disulfide and stanene. Surface oxide suppresses balistic conductance by a factor of 10 compared to the ideal surface. Capping the ideal copper surface with graphene slightly increase conductance but MoS$_2$ and stanene …
