We give a brief introduction to matrix models and the group field theory (GFT) formalism as realizations of the idea of a third quantization of gravity, and present in some more detail the idea and basic features of a continuum third quantization formalism in terms of a field theory on the space of connections, building up on the results of loop quantum gravity that allow to make the idea slightly more concrete. We explore to what extent one can rigorously define such a field theory. Concrete examples are given for the simple case of Riemannian GR in 3 spacetime dimensions. We discuss the relation between GFT and this formal continuum third quantized gravity, and what it can teach us about the continuum limit of GFTs.
In general, a global and unique vacuum state cannot be constructed for a curved space. As a remedy, we introduce a curved space background geometry with a Minkowski metric tensor and locally non-zero curvature and torsion. Based on this geometry, we propose a `third'/vacuum quantization model as a consequence of Unruh effect. Accordingly, we introduce a `third' quantization scalar field as a general coordinate transformation of spacetime for the second quantization fields. Then we show that in the classical limit, the `third' quantization fields appear as Riemannian manifolds with an emergent …
In this paper, we will deform the second and third quantized theories by deforming the canonical commutation relations in such a way that they become consistent with the generalized uncertainty principle. Thus, we will first deform the second quantized commutator and obtain a deformed version of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Then we will further deform the third quantized theory by deforming the third quantized canonical commutation relation. This way we will obtain a deformed version of the third quantized theory for the multiverse.
The third quantization formalism of quantum cosmology adds simplicity and conceptual insight into the quantum description of the multiverse. Within such a formalism, the existence of squeezed and entangled states raises the question of whether the complementary principle of quantum mechanics has to be extended to the quantum description of the whole space-time manifold. If so, the 'particle' description entails the consideration of a multiverse scenario and the 'wave' description induces us to consider as well correlations and interactions among the universes of the multiverse.
In this paper, we will constrain the operator ordering ambiguity of Wheeler-DeWitt equation by analyzing the quantum fluctuations in the universe. This will be done using a third quantized formalism. It is expected that the early stages of the universe are dominated by quantum fluctuations. Furthermore, it is also expected that these quantum fluctuations get suppressed with the expansion of the universe. We will show that this desired behavior of quantum fluctuations could be realized by a wide ranges of the factor ordering parameters. We will examined two different cosmological models, and ob…
We consider the third quantization in quantum cosmology of a minisuperspace extended by the Eisenhart-Duval lift. We study the third quantization based on both Klein-Gordon type and Dirac-type equations in the extended minisuperspace. Spontaneous creation of "universes" is investigated upon the quantization of a simple model. We find that the quantization of the Dirac-type wave function reveals that the number density of universes is expressed by the Fermi-Dirac distribution. We also calculate the entanglement entropy of the multi-universe system.
We study on the third quantization of a Kaluza-Klein toy model. In this model time ($x$) is defined by the scale factor of universe, and the space coordinate ($y$) is defined by the ratio of the scales of the ordinary space and the internal space. We calculate the number density of the universes created from nothing and examine whether the compactification can be explained statistically by the idea of the third quantization.
We study the third quantization of a Brans-Dicke toy model, we calculate the number density of the universes created from nothing and found that it has a Planckian form. Also, we calculated the uncertainty relation for this model by means of functional Schr"odinger equation and we found that fluctuations of the third-quantized universe field tends to a finite limit in the course of cosmic expansion.
A multidimensional cosmological model with space-time consisting of n (n>1) Einstein spaces M_i is investigated in the presence of a cosmological constant Lambda and m homogeneous minimally coupled scalar fields as a matter source. Classes of the models integrable at classical as well as quantum levels are found. These classes are equivalent to each other. Quantum wormhole solutions are obtained for them and the procedure of the third quantization is performed. An inflationary universe arising from classically forbidden Euclidean region is investigated for a model with a cosmological constant.
We examine the third quantization of $f(R)$-type gravity, based on its effective Lagrangian in the case of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric. Starting from the effective Lagrangian, we execute a suitable change of variable and the second quantization, and we obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The third quantization of this theory is considered. And the uncertainty relation of the universe is investigated in the example of $f(R)$-type gravity, where $f(R)=R^2$. It is shown, when the time is late namely the scale factor of the universe is large, the spacetime does not contradict…
In this paper, we will analyse virtual black holes using the third quantization formalism. As the virtual black hole model depends critically on the assumption that the quantum fluctuations dominate the geometry of spacetime at Planck scale, we will analyse the quantum fluctuations for a black hole using third quantization. We will demonstrate that these quantum fluctuations depend on the factor ordering chosen. So, we will show that only certain values of the factor ordering parameter are consistent with virtual black holes model of spacetime foam.
Based on the algebraico-categorical (:sheaf-theoretic and sheaf cohomological) conceptual and technical machinery of Abstract Differential Geometry, a new, genuinely background spacetime manifold independent, field quantization scenario for vacuum Einstein gravity and free Yang-Mills theories is introduced. The scheme is coined `third quantization' and, although it formally appears to follow a canonical route, it is fully covariant, because it is an expressly functorial `procedure'. Various current and future Quantum Gravity research issues are discussed under the light of 3rd-quantization. A …
We study the third quantization of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with $N$-minimal massless fields. The third quantized Hamiltonian for the WDW equation in the minisuperspace consists of infinite number of intrinsic time-dependent, decoupled oscillators. The Hamiltonian has a pair of invariant operators for each universe with conserved momenta of the fields that play a role of the annihilation and the creation operators and that construct various quantum states for the universe. The closed universe exhibits an interesting feature of transitions from stable states to tachyonic states …
In the previous paper we examined the third quantization of the $f(R)$-type gravity and studied the Heisenberg uncertainty relation of the universe in the example of $f(R)=R^2$. In this work the Heisenberg uncertainty relation of the universe is investigated in the general $f(R)$-type gravity where tachyonic states are avoided. It is shown that, at late times namely the scale factor of the universe is large, the spacetime becomes classical, and, at early times namely the scale factor of the universe is small, the quantum effects dominate.
We discuss in detail the uniform discretization approach to the quantization of totally constrained theories. This approach allows to construct the continuum theory of interest as a well defined, controlled, limit of well behaved discrete theories. We work out several finite dimensional examples that exhibit behaviors expected to be of importance in the quantization of gravity. We also work out the case of BF theory. At the time of quantization, one can take two points of view. The technique can be used to define, upon taking the continuum limit, the space of physical states of the continuum c…
In this paper we will analyze the third quantization of gravity in path integral formalism. We will use the time-dependent version of Wheeler-DeWitt equation to analyze the multiverse in this formalism. We will propose a mechanism for baryogenesis to occurs in the multiverse, without violating the baryon number conservation.
The spinfoam approach to quantum gravity rests on a "quantization" of BF theory using 2-complexes and group representations. We explain why, in dimension three and higher, this "spinfoam quantization" must be amended to be made consistent with the gauge symmetries of discrete BF theory. We discuss a suitable generalization, called "cellular quantization", which (1) is finite, (2) produces a topological invariant, (3) matches with the properties of the continuum BF theory, (4) corresponds to its loop quantization. These results significantly clarify the foundations - and limitations - of the sp…
An example illustrating a continuum spin foam framework is presented. This covariant framework induces the kinematics of canonical loop quantization, and its dynamics is generated by a {\em renormalized} sum over colored polyhedra. Physically the example corresponds to 3d gravity with cosmological constant. Starting from a kinematical structure that accommodates local degrees of freedom and does not involve the choice of any background structure (e. g. triangulation), the dynamics reduces the field theory to have only global degrees of freedom. The result is {\em projectively} equivalent to th…
(abbreviated) We study quantized solutions of WdW equation describing a closed FRW universe with a $Λ$ term and a set of massless scalar fields. We show that when $Λ\ll 1$ in the natural units and the standard $in$-vacuum state is considered, either wavefunction of the universe, $Ψ$, or its derivative with respect to the scale factor, $a$, behave as random quasi-classical fields at sufficiently large values of $a$, when $1 \ll a \ll e^{2\over 3Λ}$ or $a \gg e^{2\over 3Λ}$, respectively. Statistical r.m.s value of the wavefunction is proportional to the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for a closed …
We present a new method for the quantization of totally constrained systems including general relativity. The method consists in constructing discretized theories that have a well defined and controlled continuum limit. The discrete theories are constraint-free and can be readily quantized. This provides a framework where one can introduce a relational notion of time and that nevertheless approximates in a well defined fashion the theory of interest. The method is equivalent to the group averaging procedure for many systems where the latter makes sense and provides a generalization otherwise. …
Building on prior work, a generally covariant reformulation of free scalar field theory on the flat Lorentzian cylinder is quantized using Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) type `polymer' representations. This quantization of the {\em continuum} classical theory yields a quantum theory which lives on a discrete spacetime lattice. We explicitly construct a state in the polymer Hilbert space which reproduces the standard Fock vacuum- two point functions for long wavelength modes of the scalar field. Our construction indicates that the continuum classical theory emerges under coarse graining. All our co…
Several approaches to the dynamics of loop quantum gravity involve discretizing the equations of motion. The resulting discrete theories are known to be problematic since the first class algebra of constraints of the continuum theory becomes second class upon discretization. If one treats the second class constraints properly, the resulting theories have very different dynamics and number of degrees of freedom than those of the continuum theory. It is therefore questionable how these theories could be considered a starting point for quantization and the definition of a continuum theory through…
A third quantization formalism is applied to a simplified multiverse scenario. A well defined quantum state of the multiverse is obtained which agrees with standard boundary condition proposals. These states are found to be squeezed, and related to accelerating universes: they share similar properties to those obtained previously by Grishchuk and Siderov. We also comment on related works that have criticized the third quantization approach.
We study the quantum mechanics of self-gravitating thin shell collapse by solving the polymerized Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We obtain the energy spectrum and solve the time dependent equation using numerics. In contradistinction to the continuum theory, we are able to consistently quantize the theory for super-Planckian black holes, and find two choices of boundary conditions which conserve energy and probability, as opposed to one in the continuum theory. Another feature unique to the polymer theory is the existence of negative energy stationary states that disappear from the spectrum as the p…
A method for consistent quantization of conformal gravity treating conformal symmetry in a very controllable way is presented. First, we discuss local conformal symmetry in the framework of gravitational interactions, where we view it as an example of a general gauge theory. We also present some early attempts at quantization of conformal gravity and use the generalized framework of covariant quantization due to Faddeev and Popov. Some salient issues such as the need for conformal gauge-fixing, an issue with conformal third ghosts, and discontinuities in conformal gravity are studied as well. …
In this paper we will analyse the third quantization of a model of super-group field cosmology with gauge symmetry. The effect of creation and annihilation of bosonic and fermionic universes in the multiverse will also be analysed. We will also construct a third quantized Noether's charge which will be conserved even when the number of universes is not conserved. Finally, we will construct both the third quantized BRST and the third quantized anti-BRST charges for this theory and use them to show that the creation and annihilation of universes is a unitarity process.
A new approach is suggested which allows to describe phenomenologically arbitrary topologies of the Universe. It consists in a generalizaton of third quantization. This quantization is carried out for the case of asymptotic closeness to a cosmological singularity. It is also pointed out that suggested approach leads to a modification of the ordinary quantum field theory. In order to show this modification we consider the example of a free massless scalar field.
In the context of loop quantum cosmology, we consider an inflationary era driven by a canonical scalar field and occurring in the semiclassical regime, where spacetime is a continuum but quantum gravitational effects are important. The spectral amplitude and index of scalar perturbations on an unperturbed de Sitter background are computed at lowest order in the slow-roll parameters. The scalar spectrum can be blue-tilted and far from scale invariance, and tuning of the quantization ambiguities is necessary for agreement with observations. The results are extended to a generalized quantization …
We propose an improved variant of the third-quantization scheme, for the spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models in Einstein gravity coupled with a neutral massless scalar field. Our strategy is to specify a semi-Riemannian structure on the mini-superspace and to consider the quantum Klein-Gordon field on the mini-superspace. Then, the Hilbert space of this quantum system becomes inseparable, which causes the creation of infinite number of universes. To overcome this issue, we introduce a vector bundle structure on the Hilbert space and the connection of the vector bundle. Then…
We show using simple arguments, that the conceptual triad of a {\it classical} black hole, semi-classical Hawking emission and geometry quantization is inherently, mutually incompatible. Presence of any two explicitly violates the third. We argue that geometry quantization, if realized in nature, magnifies the quantum gravity features hugely to catapult them into the realm of observational possibilities. We also explore a quantum route towards extremality of the black holes.
In the present article we point out a conceptual issue of the Third Quantization formalism for Canonical Quantum Gravity. Based on earlier results on interuniversal entanglement, the picture of noninteracting universe-antiuniverse pairs is incomplete. In particular, the variation of the entanglement entropy with the scale factor, understood as a measure of time, implies either an interaction between pairs of universes or universes with a heat bath, i.e. an external field. We propose a simple solution to the problem by adding a new quantum field to the formalism. Correspondingly, particles of t…
In this paper we analyze the third quantization of Horava-Lifshits theory of gravity without detail balance. We show that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for Horava-Lifshits theory of gravity in minisuperspace approximation becomes the equation for time-dependent harmonic oscillator. After interpreting the scaling factor as the time, we are able to derive the third quantized wavefunction for multiverse. We also show in third quantized formalism it is possible that the universe can form from nothing. After we go on to analyze the effect of introducing interactions in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We…
