We present a new measurement, 0.85-3.5 Z_solar, of the metallicity of high velocity cloud (HVC) Complex M by analyzing ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of the blazar Mrk 421 taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. Although an HVC at V_LSR = -131 km/s is not visible in 21 cm emission (logN_HI<18.38; 3sigma), it is detected in ultraviolet absorption lines of C II, N I, O I, O VI, Si II, Si III, Si IV, Fe II, and HI. By referencing velocities to the intermediate velocity cloud at -60 km/s and jointly analyzing HI absorption from high-order HI Lyman lines, we measure logN_HI=16.84(0.13,+0.34) (1sigma) in the HVC. Comparing HI, and O I, we find an HVC metallicity [O/H]=0.32(-0.39, +0.22). Because the sight line passes 4 degrees from the HVCs in Complex M, the detected HVC may represent the highest velocity component of the Complex, and our measurements provide a lower limit to its metallicity. The high, possibly super-solar metallicity, together with the low distance, z<3.5 kpc, above the Galactic plane suggest that Complex M is condensed returning gas from a Galactic fountain.
(Abridged) We recently found that the halo of the Milky Way contains a large reservoir of warm-hot gas that contains a large fraction of the missing baryons from the Galaxy. The average physical properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) are determined by combining average absorption and emission measurements along several extragalactic sightlines. However, there is a wide distribution of both, the halo emission measure and the \ovii column density, suggesting that the Galactic warm-hot gaseous halo is anisotropic. We present {\it Suzaku} observations of fields close to two sightlines alon…
We report ultraviolet spectra of Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in Complex C, taken by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), together with new 21-cm spectra from the Green Bank Telescope. The wide spectral coverage and higher S/N, compared to previous HST spectra, provide better velocity definition of the HVC absorption, additional ionization species, and improved abundances in this halo gas. Complex C has a metallicity of 0.1-0.3 solar and a wide range of ions, suggesting dynamical and thermal interactions with hot gas in the Galactic halo. Spectra i…
% aims To compare information gained from radio and optical absorption line profiles from the diffuse interstellar medium along the same sightline % methods We compare new and existing 21cm HI and 3.4mm HCO+ profiles with profiles of the optical tracers CaII, NaI, and KI from an unpublished thesis of Tappe (2004) %results The atoms traced optically are all heavily depleted compared to a Solar abundance and only the integrated optical depths of HI and HCO+ correlate well with E(B-V). HCO+ is the species with by far the most limited kinematic distribution and the narrowest lines followed in orde…
In this work we characterise the properties of the object SDSS J020536.84-081424.7, an extended nebular region with projected extension of $14 \times 14$ kpc$^{2}$ in the line of sight of the ETG Mrk 1172, using unprecedented spectroscopic data from MUSE. We perform a spatially resolved stellar population synthesis and estimate the stellar mass for both Mrk 1172 ($1 \times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) and our object of study ($3 \times 10^{9} M_{\odot}$). While the stellar content of Mrk 1172 is dominated by an old ($\sim 10$ Gyr) stellar population, the extended nebular emission has its light dominate…
Mrk 1018 is a "changing-look" AGN whose optical spectrum transitioned from a Type 1.9 to Type 1 between 1979 and 1984 and back to a Type 1.9 in 2015. This latest transition was accompanied by a decrease in X-ray flux. We analyze the Chandra spectra from 2010 and 2016 and NuSTAR spectra from 2016, carefully treating pile-up in the Chandra spectrum from 2010 and self-consistently modeling absorption, reflection, and Fe K$α$ line emission in the X-ray spectra from 2016. We demonstrate that while the 2-10 keV X-ray flux decreased by an order of magnitude (1.46$^{+0.10}_{-0.13} \times 10^{-11}$ erg…
Using archival, high-resolution far-ultraviolet HST/STIS spectra of 34 Galactic O and B stars, we measure CI column densities and compare them with measurements from the literature of CO and H_2 with regard to understanding the presence of translucent clouds along the line-of-sight. We find that the CO/H_2 and CO/CI ratios provide good discriminators for the presence of translucent material, and both increase as a function of molecular fraction, f = 2N(H_2)/N(H). We suggest that sightlines with values below CO/H_2 ~ 1E-6 and CO/CI ~ 1 contain mostly diffuse molecular clouds, while those with v…
We present the first J-band spectrum of Mrk 231, which reveals a large \ion{He}{1}*$λ10830$ broad absorption line with a profile similar to that of the well-known \ion{Na}{1} broad absorption line. Combining this spectrum with optical and UV spectra from the literature, we show that the unusual reddening noted by \citet{veilleux13} is explained by a reddening curve like those previously used to explain low values of total-to-selective extinction in SNe Ia. The nuclear starburst may be the origin and location of the dust. Spatially-resolved emission in the broad absorption line trough suggests …
In order to understand the evolution and feedback of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and star formation it is important to use molecular lines as probes of physical conditions and chemistry. We use H$_{2}$S to investigate the impact of starburst and AGN activity on the chemistry of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies. Using the APEX single dish telescope, we have observed the $1_{10}$--$1_{01}$ transition of ortho-H$_{2}$S at 168 GHz towards the centres of twelve nearby luminous infrared galaxies. We have also observed the same line towards the ultra luminous infrared …
We present multi-wavelength observations that trace more than 40 years in the life of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in Mrk 590, traditionally known as a classic Seyfert 1 galaxy. From spectra recently obtained from HST, Chandra, and the Large Binocular Telescope, we find that the activity in the nucleus of Mrk 590 has diminished so significantly that the continuum luminosity is a factor of 100 lower than the peak luminosity probed by our long baseline observations. Furthermore, the broad emission lines, once prominent in the UV/optical spectrum, have all but disappeared. Since AGN type is …
Understanding how the Galactic magnetic field threads the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) remains a considerable challenge, as different magnetic field tracers probe dissimilar phases and field components. We search for evidence of a common magnetic field shared between the ionized and neutral ISM by comparing 1.4 GHz radio continuum polarization and HI line emission from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array Continuum Transit Survey (GALFACTS) and Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey, respectively. We compute the polarization gradient of the continuum emission and se…
Along several sight lines within the Milky Way ArH+ has been ubiquitously detected with only one detection in extragalactic environments, namely along two sight lines in the red shift z=0.89 absorber towards the lensed blazar PKS 1830-211. Being formed in predominantly atomic gas by reactions between Ar+, which were initially ionised by cosmic rays and molecular hydrogen, ArH+ has been shown to be an excellent tracer of atomic gas as well as the impinging cosmic-ray ionisation rates. In this work, we attempt to extend the observations of ArH+in extragalactic sources to examine its use as a tra…
We discuss the detection of absorption by interstellar hydrogen fluoride (HF) along the sight line to the submillimeter continuum sources W49N and W51. We have used Herschel's HIFI instrument in dual beam switch mode to observe the 1232.4762 GHz J = 1 - 0 HF transition in the upper sideband of the band 5a receiver. We detected foreground absorption by HF toward both sources over a wide range of velocities. Optically thin absorption components were detected on both sight lines, allowing us to measure - as opposed to obtain a lower limit on - the column density of HF for the first time. As in pr…
High resolution (sub-)millimeter polarization observations have opened a new era in the understanding of how B-fields are organized in star forming regions, unveiling an intricate interplay between the B-fields and the gas in protostellar cores. However, to assess the role of the B-field in the process of solar-type star formation, it is key to be able to understand to what extent these polarized dust emissions are good tracers of the B-field in the youngest protostellar objects. We present a thorough investigation of the fidelity and limitations of using dust polarized emission to map the B-f…
We present Nustar 3-40 keV observations of the optically selected Type 2 quasar (QSO2) SDSS J1034+6001 or Mrk 34. The high-quality hard X-ray spectrum and archival XMM-Newton data can be fitted self-consistently with a reflection-dominated continuum and strong Fe Kalpha fluorescence line with equivalent-width >1 keV. Prior X-ray spectral fitting below 10 keV showed the source to be consistent with being obscured by Compton-thin column densities of gas along the line-of-sight, despite evidence for much higher columns from multiwavelength data. NuSTAR now enables a direct measurement of this col…
We investigate the supernova-driven galactic wind of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 7552, using both ground-based optical nebular emission lines and far-ultraviolet absorption lines measured with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. We detect broad (~300 km/s) blueshifted (-40 km/s) optical emission lines associated with the galaxy's kpc-scale star-forming ring. The broad line kinematics and diagnostic line ratios suggest that the H-alpha emission comes from clouds of high density gas entrained in a turbulent outflow. We compare the H-alpha emission line profile to the UV abso…
Absorption lines from the molecules OH+, H2O+, and H3+ have been observed in a diffuse molecular cloud along a line of sight near W51 IRS2. We present the first chemical analysis that combines the information provided by all three of these species. Together, OH+ and H2O+ are used to determine the molecular hydrogen fraction in the outskirts of the observed cloud, as well as the cosmic-ray ionization rate of atomic hydrogen. H3+ is used to infer the cosmic-ray ionization rate of H2 in the molecular interior of the cloud, which we find to be zeta_2=(4.8+-3.4)x10^-16 per second. Combining the res…
Molecular line observations using a variety of tracers are often used to investigate the kinematic structure of molecular clouds. However, measurements of cloud velocity dispersions with different lines, even in the same region, often yield inconsistent results. The reasons for this disagreement are not entirely clear since molecular line observations are subject to a number of biases. In this paper, we untangle and investigate various factors that drive linewidth measurement biases by constructing synthetic position-position-velocity cubes for a variety of tracers from a suite of self-gravita…
Since HCN emission has been shown to be a linear tracer of ongoing star formation activity, we have searched for HCN (J = 1->0) emission from known GMCs in the nearby galaxy M33. No significant HCN emission has been found along any of the lines of sight. We find two lines of sight where CO-to-HCN integrated intensity ratios up to 280, nearly a factor of 6 above what is found in comparable regions of the Milky Way. Star formation tracers suggest that the HCN-to-star formation rate ratio (L_HCN/M_SFR) is a factor of six lower than what is observed in the Milky Way (on average) and local extragal…
This study explores the link between the [OIII]88mu emission, a well-known tracer of HII regions, and 24mu continuum, often used to trace warm dust in the ionized phases of galaxies. We investigate the local conditions driving the relation between those tracers in the Magellanic Clouds, comparing observations with Cloudy models consisting of an HII region plus a photodissociation region (PDR) component, varying the stellar age, the initial density (at the illuminated edge of the cloud), and the ionization parameter. We introduce a new parameter, cPDR, to quantify the proportion of emission ari…
(Abridged) We present an analysis of ionization and metal enrichment in the Magellanic Stream (MS), the nearest gaseous tidal stream, using HST/STIS and FUSE ultraviolet spectroscopy of two background AGN, NGC 7469 and Mrk 335. For NGC 7469, we include optical spectroscopy from VLT/UVES. In both sightlines the MS is detected in low-ion and high-ion absorption. Toward NGC 7469, we measure a MS oxygen abundance [O/H]_MS=[OI/HI]=-1.00+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.08(syst), supporting the view that the Stream originates in the SMC rather than the LMC. We use CLOUDY to model the low-ion phase of the Stream as …
We present the results of two Mopra 3-mm spectral line surveys of the Lines of Sight (LOS) toward the Galactic Center (GC) molecular complexes Sgr B2 (LOS+0.693) and Sgr A (LOS-0.11). The spectra covered the frequency ranges of ~77-93 GHz and ~105-113 GHz. We have detected 38 molecular species and 25 isotopologues. The isotopic ratios derived from column density ratios are consistent with the canonical values, indicating that chemical isotopic fractionation and/or selective photodissociation can be considered negligible (<10%) for the GC physical conditions. The derived abundance and rotationa…
The Halo Assembly in Lambda-CDM: Observations in 7 Dimensions (HALO7D) dataset consists of Keck II/DEIMOS spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope-measured proper motions of Milky Way halo main sequence turnoff stars in the CANDELS fields. In this paper, we present the spectroscopic component of this dataset, and discuss target selection, observing strategy, and survey properties. We present a new method of measuring line-of-sight (LOS) velocities by combining multiple spectroscopic observations of a given star, utilizing Bayesian hierarchical modeling. We present the LOS velocity distributions…

We have obtained OH spectra of four transitions in the $^2Π_{3/2}$ ground state, at 1612, 1665, 1667, and 1720 MHz, toward 51 sightlines that were observed in the Herschel project Galactic Observations of Terahertz C+. The observations cover the longitude range of (32$^\circ$, 64$^\circ$) and (189$^\circ$, 207$^\circ$) in the northern Galactic plane. All of the diffuse OH emissions conform to the so-called 'Sum Rule' of the four brightness temperatures, indicating optically thin emission condition for OH from diffuse clouds in the Galactic plane. The column densities of the HI `halos' N(HI) su…
Offset active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are AGNs that are in ongoing galaxy mergers, which produce kinematic offsets in the AGNs relative to their host galaxies. Offset AGNs are also close relatives of dual AGNs. We conduct a systematic search for offset AGNs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, by selecting AGN emission lines that exhibit statistically significant line-of-sight velocity offsets relative to systemic. From a parent sample of 18314 Type 2 AGNs at z<0.21, we identify 351 offset AGN candidates with velocity offsets of 50 km/s < |v| < 410 km/s. When we account for projection effects in th…
We present a family of robust tracer mass estimators to compute the enclosed mass of galaxy haloes from samples of discrete positional and kinematical data of tracers, such as halo stars, globular clusters and dwarf satellites. The data may be projected positions, distances, line of sight velocities or proper motions. Forms of the estimator tailored for the Milky Way galaxy and for M31 are given. Monte Carlo simulations are used to quantify the uncertainty as a function of sample size. For the Milky Way, the satellite sample consists of 26 galaxies with line-of-sight velocities. We find that t…
The cosmological missing baryons at z<1 most likely hide in the hot (T$\gtrsim10^{5.5}$ K) phase of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). While the hot WHIM is hard to detect due to its high ionisation level, the warm (T$\lesssim10^{5.5}$ K) phase of the WHIM has been very robustly detected in the FUV band. We adopted the assumption that the hot and warm WHIM phases are co-located and thus used the FUV-detected warm WHIM as a tracer for the cosmologically interesting hot WHIM. We utilised the assumption by performing an X-ray follow-up in the sight line of a blazar PKS 2155-304 at the reds…
We present new bulge stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 10 active galaxies with secure $M_{BH}$ determinations from reverberation-mapping. These new velocity dispersion measurements are based on spatially resolved kinematics from integral-field (IFU) spectroscopy. In all but one case, the field of view of the IFU extends beyond the effective radius of the galaxy, and in the case of Mrk 79 the field of view extends to almost one half the effective radius. This combination of spatial resolution and field of view allows for secure determinations of stellar velocity dispersion within the…
We present the first results of the Herschel open time key program, Galactic Observations of Terahertz C$^+$ (GOT C+) survey of the [CII] fine-structure line at 1.9 THz (158 microns) using the HIFI instrument on Herschel. We detected 146 interstellar clouds along sixteen lines-of-sight towards the inner Galaxy. We also acquired HI and CO isotopologue data along each line-of-sight for analysis of the physical conditions in these clouds. Here we analyze 29 diffuse clouds (A$_{V}$ < 1.3 mag.) in this sample characterized by having [CII] and HI emission, but no detectable CO. We find that [CII] em…
Although surveys of infall motions in dense cores have been carried out for years, few surveys have focused on mapping infall across cores using multiple spectral line observations. To fill this gap, we present IRAM 30-m Telescope maps of N2H+(1-0), DCO+(2-1), DCO+(3-2), and HCO+(3-2) emission towards two prestellar cores (L492 and L694-2) and one protostellar core (L1521F). We find that the measured infall velocity varies with position across each core and choice of molecular line, likely as a result of radial variations in core chemistry and dynamics. Line-of-sight infall speeds estimated fr…
The hydrogen fluoride (HF) molecule is seen in absorption in the interstellar medium (ISM) along many lines of sight. Surprisingly, it is observed in emission toward the Orion Bar, which is an interface between the ionized region around the Orion Trapezium stars and the Orion molecular cloud. We aim to understand the origin of HF emission in the Orion Bar by comparing its spatial distribution with other tracers. We examine three mechanisms to explain the HF emission: thermal excitation, radiative dust pumping, and chemical pumping. We used a Herschel/HIFI strip map of the HF J = 1-0 line, cove…

We present a new non-parametric Jeans code, GravSphere, that recovers the density $ρ(r)$ and velocity anisotropy $β(r)$ of spherical stellar systems, assuming only that they are in a steady-state. Using a large suite of mock data, we confirm that with only line-of-sight velocity data, GravSphere provides a good estimate of the density at the projected stellar half mass radius, $ρ(R_{1/2})$, but is not able to measure $ρ(r)$ or $β(r)$, even with 10,000 tracer stars. We then test three popular methods for breaking this $ρ-β$ degeneracy: using multiple populations with different $R_{1/2}$; using …
Aiming at providing a firm mean distance estimate to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and thus to place it within the internally consistent Local Group distance framework we recently established, we compiled the current-largest database of published distance estimates to the galaxy. Based on careful statistical analysis, we derive mean distance estimates to the SMC using eclipsing binary systems, variable stars, stellar population tracers, and star cluster properties. Their weighted mean leads to a final recommendation for the mean SMC distance of $(m-M)_0^{\rm SMC} = 18.96 \pm 0.02$ mag, whe…
We investigate the spectral correlations between different species used to observe molecular clouds. We use hydrodynamic simulations and a full chemical network to study the abundances of over 150 species in typical Milky Way molecular clouds. We perform synthetic observations in order to produce emission maps of a subset of these tracers. We study the effects of different lines of sight and spatial resolution on the emission distribution and perform a robust quantitative comparison of the species to each other. We use the Spectral Correlation Function (SCF), which quantifies the root mean squ…
We propose a novel method to constrain turbulence and bulk motions in massive galaxies, groups and clusters, exploring both simulations and observations. As emerged in the recent picture of the top-down multiphase condensation, the hot gaseous halos are tightly linked to all other phases in terms of cospatiality and thermodynamics. While hot halos (10^7 K) are perturbed by subsonic turbulence, warm (10^4 K) ionized and neutral filaments condense out of the turbulent eddies. The peaks condense into cold molecular clouds (< 100 K) raining in the core via chaotic cold accretion (CCA). We show all…
