The period derivative bound for SGR 0418+5729 (Rea et al. 2010) establishes the magnetic dipole moment to be distinctly lower than the magnetar range, placing the source beyond the regime of isolated pulsar activity in the P - dP/dt diagram and giving a characteristic age > 2 \times 10^{7} years, much older than the 10^5 year age range of SGRs and AXPs. So the spindown must be produced by a mechanism other than dipole radiation in vacuum. A fallback disk will spin down a neutron star with surface dipole magnetic field in the 10^{12} G range and initial rotation period P_0 ~ 100 ms to the 9.1 s period of SGR 0418+5729 in a few 10^4 to ~10^5 years. The current upper limit to the period derivative gives a lower limit of \sim 10^5 years to the age that is not sensitive to the neutron star's initial conditions. The total magnetic field on the surface of SGR 0418+5729 could be significantly larger than its 10^{12} G dipole component.
Sgr A$^*$ is the super massive black hole residing in the centre of the Milky Way. There is plenty of observational evidence that a massive gas cloud fell into the central parsec of the Milky Way $\sim 6$ million years ago, triggering formation of a disc of young stars and activating Sgr A$^*$. In addition to the disc, there is an unexplained population of young stars on randomly oriented orbits. Here we hypothesize that these young stars were formed by fragmentation of a massive quasi-spherical gas shell driven out from Sgr A$^*$ potential well by an energetic outflow. To account for the prop…
In this paper, we attribute high braking indices $n>3$ of two magnetars SGR 0501$+$4516 and 1E 2259$+$586 to the decrease in their inclination angles using the double magnetic-dipole model proposed by Hamil et al.(2016). In this model, there are two magnetic moments inside a neutron star, one is generated by the rotation effect of a charged sphere, $M_{1}$, and the other is generated by the magnetization of ferromagnetically ordered material, $M_{2}$. Our calculations indicate that the magnetic moment $M_{2}$ would evolve towards alignment with the spin axis of the two magnetars, and cause the…
We have investigated the long-term evolution of individual anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) with relatively well constrained X-ray luminosity and rotational properties. In the frame of the fallback disc model, we have obtained the ranges of disc mass and dipole field strength that can produce the observed source properties. We have compared our results with those obtained earlier for dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs). Our results show that (1) the X-ray luminosity, period and period derivative of the individual AXP/SGR sources can be produced self-consistently in…
A Magnetar Strength Surface Magnetic Field for the Slowly Spinning Down SGR 0418+5729
There are several phenomenological similarities between Soft Gamma Repeaters and Fast Radio Bursts, including duty factors, time scales and probable repetition. The sudden release of magnetic energy in a neutron star magnetosphere, as in popular models of SGR, can meet the energy requirements of FRB but requires both the presence of magnetospheric plasma in order that dissipation occur in a transparent region and a mechanism for releasing much of that energy quickly. FRB sources and SGR are distinguished by long-lived (up to thousands of years) current-carrying coronal arches remaining from fo…
We present detailed spectral and temporal characteristics of the persistent X-ray emission of SGR J1935+2154 based on our XMM-Newton and Chandra observations taken in the aftermath of its April 2020 burst storm, during which hundreds of energetic X-ray bursts were emitted, including one associated with an extraordinary fast radio burst. We clearly detect the pulsed X-ray emission in the XMM-Newton data. An average spin-down rate of 1.6$\times$10$^{-11}$ s s$^{-1}$ is obtained using our spin period measurement combined with three earlier values reported from the same active episode. Our investi…
In continuation of our earlier work on the long-term evolution of the so-called high--B radio pulsars (HBRPs) with measured braking indices, we have investigated the long-term evolution of the remaining five HBRPs for which braking indices have not been measured yet. This completes our source-by-source analyses of HBRPs in the fallback disc model that was also applied earlier to anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), soft gamma repeaters (SGRs), and dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs). Our results show that the X-ray luminosities and the rotational properties of these rather different neutron star pop…
The comparative analysis of parameters is carried out for two samples of radio pulsars. Objects of the first sample have periods P > 2 sec, the second is characterized by magnetic fields at the neutron star surface $Bs > 4.4\times10^{13}$ G. The main goal of this analysis is to find some differences between normal pulsars and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXP) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGR) with the similar values of periods and magnetic fields. It is shown that the dependence of period derivatives on periods for pulsars with long periods is $dP/dt \propto P^{1.67}$. This means that we must sea…
The observational properties of Soft Gamma Repeaters and Ano\-malous X-ray Pulsars (SGR/AXP) indicate to necessity of the energy source different from a rotational energy of a neutron star. The model, where the source of the energy is connected with a magnetic field dissipation in a highly magnetized neutron star (magnetar) is analyzed. Some observational inconsistencies are indicated for this interpretation. The alternative energy source, connected with the nuclear energy of superheavy nuclei stored in the nonequilibrium layer of low mass neutron star is discussed.
We report the analysis of 5 NuSTAR observations of SGR 1806-20 spread over a year from April 2015 to April 2016, more than 11 years following its Giant Flare (GF) of 2004. The source spin frequency during the NuSTAR observations follows a linear trend with a frequency derivative $\dotν=(-1.25\pm0.03)\times10^{-12}$ Hz s$^{-1}$, implying a surface dipole equatorial magnetic field $B\approx7.7\times10^{14}$ G. Thus, SGR 1806-20 has finally returned to its historical minimum torque level measured between 1993 and 1998. The source showed strong timing noise for at least 12 years starting in 2000, …
Constraints on the internal physics of neutron stars from the observational data of several young pulsars: the role of a power-law decaying dipole magnetic field
We revisit in this work a model for repeating Fast Radio Bursts based of the release of energy provoked by the magnetic field dynamics affecting a magnetar's crust. We address the basics of such a model by solving the propagation of the perturbation approximately, and quantify the energetics and the radiation by bunches of charges in the so-called {\it charge starved} region in the magnetosphere. The (almost) simultaneous emission of newly detected X-rays from SGR 1935+2154 is tentatively associated to a reconnection behind the propagation. The strength of $f$-mode gravitational radiation exci…
Ge et al. reported a peculiar large glitch observed from SGR 1935 recently~\citep{2022arXiv221103246G}. % Interestingly, this glitch occurred about $3.1\pm 2.5~\rm{days}$ before FRB 200428, accompanied by a delayed spin up (DSU) process with a timescale of $8\pm 1~\rm{days}$. % This DSU is the first one detected from magnetars unambiguously, previously, DSU has only been detected from large glitches of the young Crab pulsar. % Strikingly, this DSU even resulted in torque reversal, i.e., the spin down state of SGR 1935 was turned into a spin up one within $8\pm 1~\rm{days}$, the first case obse…
We have investigated the long-term evolutions of the high-magnetic field radio pulsars (HBRPs) with measured braking indices in the same model that was applied earlier to individual anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) and dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs). We have shown that the rotational properties (period, period derivative and braking index) and the X-ray luminosity of individual HBRPs can be acquired simultaneously by the neutron stars evolving with fallback discs. The model sources reach the observed properties of HBRPs in the propeller phases, when pulsed radio …
