We investigate photon production in a scenario of quark-gluon plasma formation in proton-proton scattering at 7 TeV. It is shown that thermal photon yields increase quadratically with the charged particle multiplicity. This gives an enhanced weight to high multiplicity events, and leads to an important photon production even in minimum bias events, where the thermal photons largely dominate over the prompt ones at transverse momentum values smaller than 10 GeV/c.
In this article, we briefly review the recent progress related to extracting the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity from the flow data measured at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
We review the current status of jet measurements in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We discuss how the current measurements provide information about the quark-gluon plasma and discuss near future opportunities at both RHIC and the LHC.
We address the principles governing QGP hadronization and particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We argue that chemical non-equilibrium is required and show that once this condition is assumed a very good description of hadron production in collider RHIC and at LHC heavy ion experiments follows. We present results of our analysis as a function of centrality. Comparing most extreme experimental conditions we show that only the reaction volume and degree of strangeness phase space saturation change. We determine the universal QGP fireball hadronization conditions.
We calculate the electromagnetic current with a more realistic approach in the RHIC and LHC energy regions in the article. We take the partons formation time as the initial time of the magnetic field response of QGP medium. The maximum electromagnetic current and the time-integrated current are two important characteristics of the chiral magnetic effect (CME), which can characterize the intensity and duration of fluctuations of CME. We consider the finite frequency response of CME to a time-varying magnetic field, find a significant impact from QGP medium feedback, and estimate the generated e…
Proton-nucleus collisions serve as an important baseline for the understanding and interpretation of the nucleus-nucleus collisions. These collisions have been employed to characterize the cold nuclear matter effects at SPS and RHIC energies for the past several years, as it was thought that Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is not formed in such collisions. However, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), there seems a possibility that QGP is formed during proton-lead (p$-$Pb) collisions. In this work, we have derived an expression for gluon induced excitation of $J/ψ$ to $ψ(2S)$, using pNRQCD, and show t…
We perform a global Bayesian analysis of a modern event-by-event heavy-ion collision model and LHC data at $\sqrt s$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. After calibration, the model simultaneously describes multiplicity, transverse momentum, and flow data at both beam energies. We report new constraints on the scaling of initial-state entropy deposition and QGP transport coefficients, including a quantitative estimate of the temperature-dependent shear viscosity $(η/s)(T)$.
The CUJET Monte Carlo Jet Energy loss model is applied to predict the jet flavor, centrality and density dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ at RHIC and LHC. Running coupling effects due to combined $x$, $k_\perp$ and $q_\perp$ evolution are included for the first time in the dynamical DGLV opacity expansion framework and are shown to provide a natural dynamical QCD tomographic solution to the surprising transparency of the quark gluon plasma produced at LHC as suggested by $p_\perp>10$ GeV $R_{AA}$ data from ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS.
It is the purpose of this note to point out that the CMS observation is in line with previous observations in particle physics at large transverse momenta and/or high multiplicities at lower energies, which were interpreted as possible evidence for quark-gluon plasma (QGP), and to suggest other features of the QGP observed in A+A collisions such as radial flow and jet quenching, which should be investigated in p-p collisions in order to provide further evidence for QGP production.
The Color String Percolation Model (CSPM) is used to determine the shear viscosity to entropy ratio ($η/s$) of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at RHIC and Pb-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV at LHC. The relativistic kinetic theory relation for $η/s$ is evaluated using CSPM values for the temperature and the mean free path of the QGP constituents. The experimental charged hadron transverse momentum spectrum is used to determine the percolation density parameter $ξ$ in Au-Au collisions (STAR). For Pb-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV $ξ$ valu…
We analyze the applicability of perturbative QCD (pQCD) approach to the issue of $J/ψ$ recombination at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and calculate the recombination cross section for $c\bar{c}$ recombination to form $J/ψ$ as a function of temperature. The charmonium wavefunction is obtained by employing a temperature dependent phenomenological potential between the $c\bar{c}$ pair. The temperature dependent formation time of charmonium is also employed in the current work. A set of coupled rate equations is established which incorporates color screening, gluonic dissociation, collisional d…
The specific shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be extracted from elliptic flow data in heavy-ion collisions by comparing them with the dynamical model VISHNU which couples a viscous fluid dynamic description of the QGP with a microscopic kinetic description of the late hadronic rescattering and freeze-out stage. A robust method for fixing (eta/s)_QGP from the collision centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled charged hadron elliptic flow is presented. The systematic uncertainties associated with this extraction method are discussed, with specific attention to …
The recent experimental CMS and E-by-E ATLAS data on the elliptic anisotropy of particles in \PbPb collisions are used to extract parton medium cross-section and the quark-gluon plasma viscosity-to-entropy ratio within the incomplete equilibration medium model. Our method assumes extrapolation of the measured pseudorapidity spectrum of charged particles to low-$p_T$ range. Then the rapidity distribution of both charged and neutral hadrons is restored. The extracted value of the parton-medium cross section is found to be $\ds σ= (3.1 \pm 0.2) {\rm mb}$. It yields $η/s = 0.17 \pm 0.02$ for the r…
We study the stochastic dynamics of c and b quarks in the hot plasma produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC, providing results for the nuclear modification factor R_AA and the elliptic flow coefficient v_2 of the single-electron spectra arising from their semi-leptonic decays. The initial QQbar pairs are generated using the POWHEG code, implementing pQCD at NLO. For the propagation in the plasma we develop a relativistic Langevin equation (solved in a medium described by hydrodynamics) whose transport coefficients are evaluated through a first-principle calculation. Finally, at…
The exotic cosmic ray events are reviewed. Theoretical attempts to explain the Centauro-like phenomena are summarized. Results of accelerator experiments looking for Centauro-related objects are discussed. The discussion is completed with an overview of the current and future collider experiments at RHIC and LHC. In particular the CASTOR detector, dedicated to Centauro and strange objects research in heavy ion collisions at the LHC energies is presented.
Proton-proton ($pp$) collision has been considered as a baseline to study the system produced in relativistic heavy-ion (AA) collisions with the basic assumption that no thermal medium is formed in $pp$ collisions. This warrants a cautious analysis of the system produced in $pp$ collisions at relativistic energies. In this work we investigate the charmonium suppression in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02, 7$ and $13$ TeV energies. Further, charmonium suppression has been studied for various event multiplicities and transverse momenta by including the mechanisms of color screening, gluonic di…
The near-side depression in two-proton or two-antiproton azimuthal correlations in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV has been observed experimentally and then qualitatively reproduced in our earlier studies with a multi-phase transport model. In this study, we further investigate the origin of the depression feature in two-baryon correlations in small collision systems. We find that the initial parton-level spatial correlation, a finite expansion in the parton stage, and quark coalescence are important ingredients leading to the near-side depression. In particular, we find that a finite expa…
The strong suppression of heavy quarkonia is a good indicator that one has generated a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in an ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision. Recent advancements in first principles calculations of the heavy quark potential provide additional insight into this suppression and can be used to further pin down the in-medium properties of the QGP. Realistic 3+1d dissipative hydrodynamical models can be used to simulate the QGP and, with bottomonium as a probe, one can make inferences for the initial temperature of the QGP and other phenomenological parameters such as the shear visco…
In this study, we investigate the impact of the magnetic field on the evolution of the transverse flow of QGP matter in the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) framework. We assume that the magnetic field is perpendicular to the reaction plane and then we solve the coupled Maxwell and conservation equations in (1+1D) transverse flow, within the Bjorken scenario. We consider a QGP with infinite electrical conductivity. First, the magnetic effects on the QGP medium at mid-rapidity are investigated at leading order; then the time and space dependence of the energy density, velocity and magnetic field in t…
We derive the distribution of energy and momentum transmitted from a primary fast parton and its medium-induced bremsstrahlung gluons to a thermalized quark-gluon plasma. Our calculation takes into account the important and thus far neglected effects of quantum interference between the resulting color currents. We use our result to obtain the rate at which energy is absorbed by the medium as a function of time and find that the rate is modified by the quantum interference between the primary parton and secondary gluons. This Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal type interference persists for time scales …
We investigate top anti-top quark pair production in lead-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider with nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy of 5.5 TeV. Due to the very high temperature and energy density created in heavy ion collision, a new state of QCD matter known as Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is expected to be produced. Top decay products loose energy inside the QGP medium. Therefore, we also study the medium modifications of different kinematic distributions. We observe significant modification in the dijets and trijets invariant mass distributions. We also found that the peak position…
We show that all central rapidity hadron yields measured in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV are well described by the chemical non-equilibrium statistical hadronization model (SHM), where the chemically equilibrated QGP source breaks up directly into hadrons. SHM parameters are obtained as a function of centrality of colliding ions, and we compare CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) results. We predict yields of unobserved hadrons and address anti-matter production. The physical properties of the quark--gluon…
We present a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) using quasi-particle model (QPM) as equation of state (EOS). Other theoretical ingredients incorporated in the model are feed-down from higher resonances namely, $χ_c$, and $ψ^{'}$, dilated formation time for quarkonia and viscous effects of the QGP medium. Assuming further that the QGP is expanding with Bjorken's hydrodynamical expansion, the present model is used to analyze the centrality dependence of the $J/ψ$ suppression in mid-rapidity region and compare it with the data obtained from SPS, …

We show that high-$p_T$ $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ are sensitive to the early expansion dynamics, and that the high-$p_T$ observables prefer delayed onset of energy loss and transverse expansion. To calculate high-$p_T$ $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$, we employ our newly developed DREENA-A framework, which combines state-of-the-art dynamical energy loss model with 3+1-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations. The model applies to both light and heavy flavor, and we predict a larger sensitivity of heavy flavor observables to the onset of transverse expansion. This presents the first time when bulk QGP behavior has b…
We calculate transverse momentum distribution of direct photons from various sources by taking into account the initial state momentum anisotropy of quark gluon plasma (QGP). The total photon yield is then compared with the recent measurement of photon transverse momentum distribution by the PHENIX collaboration. It is also demonstrated that the presence of such an anisotropy can describe the PHENIX photon data better than the isotropic case in the present model. We show that the isotropization time thus extracted lies within the range $1.5 \geqτ_{\rm iso} \geq 0.5$ fm/c for the initial condit…
We investigate the effect of the electromagnetic field generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions on the dissociation of $Υ$ mesons. The electromagnetic field is calculated using a simple model which characterizes the emerging quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by its conductivity only. A numerical estimate of the field strength experienced by $Υ$ mesons embedded in the expanding QGP and its consequences on the $Υ$ dissociation is made. The electromagnetic field effects prove to be negligible compared to the established strong-interaction suppression mechanisms.
Proton-proton (pp) collisions have been traditionally used as a baseline measurement in the search for a deconfined state of matter in heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The unprecedented collision energies that are available at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research (CERN) have illuminated new challenges in understanding the possible formation of droplets of this deconfined matter of partonic degrees of freedom in hadronic collisions, especially in high-multiplicity events. Enhancement of multi-strange particles compared to pions, degr…
Following a recent work on equation of state for strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma [J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 32, 993 (2006)], we revisited the equation of state by incorporating the non-perturbative effects in the deconfined plasma phase. Our results on thermodynamic observables viz. pressure, energy density, speed of sound etc. nicely fit with the lattice equation of state for gluon, massless and as well massive flavored plasma. Motivated by this agreement with lattice results, we have employed our equation of state to estimate the quarkonium suppression in an expanding, dissipativ…
We estimate the thermalization time in two colliding shock waves holographic model of heavy-ion collisions. For this purpose we model the process by the Vaidya metric with a horizon defined by the trapped surface location. We consider two bottom-up AdS/QCD models that give, within the colliding shock waves approach, the dependence of multiplicity on the energy compatible with RHIC and LHC results. One model is a bottom-up AdS/QCD confining model and the other is related to an anisotropic thermalization. We estimate the thermalization time and show that increasing the confining potential decrea…
We explore the system size dependence of heavy-quark-QGP interaction by studying the heavy flavor meson suppression and elliptic flow in Pb-Pb, Xe-Xe, Ar-Ar and O-O collisions at the LHC. The space-time evolution of the QGP is simulated using a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model, while the heavy-quark-QGP interaction is described by an improved Langevin approach that includes both collisional and radiative energy loss inside a thermal medium. Within this framework, we provides a reasonable description of the $D$ meson suppression and flow coefficients in Pb-Pb collisions, as well as …
This is a contribution for the Proceedings of 5th International Conference on New Frontiers in Physics (ICNFP 2016), held at Crete, 6-14 July 2016. Our goal is to obtain phenomenologically reliable insights for the physics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) from the holography. I briefly review how in the holographic setup one can describe the QGP formation in heavy ion collisions and how to get quantitatively the main characteristics of the QGP formation -- the total multiplicity and the thermalization time. To fit the experimental form of dependence of total multiplicity on energy, obtained at …
The quark chemical potential is one of the fundamental parameters describing the Quark-Gluon Plasma produced by sufficiently energetic heavy-ion collisions. It is not large at the extremely high temperatures probed by the LHC, but it plays a key role in discussions of the beam energy scan programmes at the RHIC and other facilities. On the other hand, collisions at such energies typically (that is, in peripheral collisions) give rise to very high values of the angular momentum density. Here we explain that holographic estimates of the quark chemical potential of a rotating sample of plasma can…
A novel attempt has been made to probe the QCD phase boundary by using the experimental data for transverse momenta of ϕ mesons produced in nuclear collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. The data are confronted with simple thermodynamic expectations and lattice QCD results. The experimental data indicate a first-order phase transition, with a mixed phase stretching the energy density between \sim1 and 3.2 GeV/fm3 corresponding to SPS energies.
We study the production of bottomonium states in heavy-ion reactions at collider energies available at RHIC and LHC. We employ an earlier constructed rate equation approach which accounts for both suppression and regeneration mechanisms in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadronization phases of the evolving thermal medium. Our previous predictions utilizing two limiting cases of strong and weak bottomonium binding in the QGP are updated by (i) checking the compatibility of the pertinent spectral functions with lattice-QCD results for euclidean correlators, (ii) adapting the initial conditions…
We investigate whether the quark gluon plasma (QGP) is created in small colliding systems from analyses of various hadron yields and their ratios in proton-proton (p+p), proton-lead (p+Pb) and lead-lead (Pb+Pb) collisions at LHC energies. Recently, the ALICE Collaboration reports enhancement of yield ratio of multi-strange hadrons to charged pions as a function of multiplicity at mid-rapidity. Motivated by these results, we develop the dynamical core-corona initialization framework and find that our results describe tendencies of the ALICE data especially for multi-strange hadrons. These resul…
The momentum dependence of the drag coefficient of heavy quarks propagating through quark gluon plasma (QGP) has been evaluated. The results have been used to estimate the nuclear suppression factor of charm and bottom quarks in QGP. We observe that the momentum dependence of the transport coefficients plays crucial role in the suppression of the heavy quarks and consequently in discerning the properties of QGP using heavy flavours as a probe. We show that the large suppression of the heavy quarks observed at RHIC and LHC is predominantly due to the radiative losses. The suppression of $D^0$ i…
We present here a model to describe the bottomonium suppression in Pb$+$Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV by using the quasi-particle model (QPM) equation of state (EOS) for the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) expanding under Bjorken's hydrodynamical expansion. The current model includes the modification of the formation time based on the temperature of QGP, color screening during bottomonium production, gluon induced dissociation and collisional damping. The cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects and decay of higher resonances of bottomonium have also been included…
Using the newly developed hybrid model VISHNU which connects viscous hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade model, we study the differential and integrated elliptic flow v_2 at different centrality bins for 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions and 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. We find that the average Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity eta/s slightly increases from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, a further study assuming different temperature dependencies for (eta/s)_QGP shows that one cannot uniquely constrain the form of (eta/s)_QGP(T…
