We present multi-frequency radio observations from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of selected AGN that seem to have a B-field structure with a central "spine" of B-field orthogonal to the jet and a longitudinal B-field near one or both edges of the jet. Two explanations for this structure have been discussed in the literature: shocks making the central orthogonal field combined with a jet-medium interaction causing the longitudinal "sheath", or both components produced by a helical jet magnetic field. One way to investigate this structure is to look for gradients in the Faraday Rotation across the jet. We will discuss results for 0333+321, 1150+812 and 2037+511 providing evidence for the latter picture.
Several multi-frequency polarization studies have shown the presence of systematic Faraday Rotation gradients across the parsec-scale jets of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), taken to be due to the systematic variation of the line-of-sight component of a helical magnetic (B) field across the jet. Other studies have confirmed the presence and sense of these gradients in several sources, thus providing evidence that these gradients persist over time and over large distances from the core. However, we find surprising new evidence for a reversal in the direction of the Faraday Rotation gradient acros…
We present new VLBI observations at 5 GHz of a complete sample of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in nearby Abell Clusters (distance class <3). Combined with data from the literature, this provides parsec-scale information for 34 BCGs. Our analysis of their parsec scale radio emission and cluster X-ray properties shows a possible dichotomy between BCGs in cool core clusters and those in non cool core clusters. Among resolved sources, those in cool core clusters tend to have two-sided parsec-scale jets, while those in less relaxed clusters have predominantly one-sided parsec-scale jets. We su…
We report observations of Faraday rotation measures (RMs) for a sample of 191 extragalactic radio jets observed within the MOJAVE program. Multifrequency VLBA observations were carried out over twelve epochs in 2006 at four frequencies between 8 and 15 GHz. We detect parsec-scale Faraday RMs in 149 sources and find the quasars to have larger RMs on average than BL Lac objects. The median core RMs are significantly higher than in the jet components. This is especially true for quasars where we detect a significant negative correlation between the magnitude of the RM and the de-projected distanc…
We present the results of a parsec-scale polarization study of three FRI radio galaxies - 3C66B, 3C78 and 3C264 - obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 5, 8 and 15 GHz. Parsec-scale polarization has been detected in a large number of beamed radio-loud active galactic nuclei, but in only a handful of the relatively unbeamed radio galaxies. We report here the detection of parsec-scale polarization at one or more frequencies in all three FRI galaxies studied. We detect Faraday rotation measures of the order of a few hundred rad/m^2 in the nuclear jet regions of 3C78 and 3C264. In 3C66B po…
We present a statistical study on parsec scale properties of a sample of Brigthest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in Abell Clusters. These data show a possible difference between BCGs in cool core clusters (two-sided parsec scale jets) and in non cool core clusters (one-sided parsec scale jet). We suggest that the two-sided morphology in cool core clusters could be due to the presence of mildly relativistic jets slowed down already at mas scale as consequence of the jet interaction with a dense surrounding medium.
A number of works reported on the existence of a large scale alignment of the polarization plane of extragalactic sources as well as the alignment of radio-sources structural axes. However, both claims and their interpretation remain controversial. For the first time we explore the parsec-scale jets alignments. Additionally, we use archival polarimetric data at different wavelengths in order to compare relative orientations of the jets and the polarization planes of their emission. Using the flux density distribution in very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio maps from the Astrogeo data…
The observed shift of the core of the relativistic AGN jets as a function of frequency allows us to evaluate the number density of outflowing plasma and, hence, the magnetization parameter. New analysis of more than 20 sources shows that for most of jets the magnetization parameter ~ 10 - 100. Since the magnetization parameter is the maximum possible bulk Lorentz-factor of the relativistic flow, this estimate is consistent with the observed superluminal motion.
I review here the present observational efforts to study parsec-scale radio jets in active galactic nuclei with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) as related to the new window to the Universe opened by the LAT instrument on-board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. I describe the goals and achievements of those radio studies, which aim to probe the emission properties, morphological changes and related kinematics, magnetic fields from the linear and circular polarization, etc., and I put those in the context of the radio--gamma-ray connection. Both statistical studies based on radio sur…
We use observations of six "blazars" with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), at eight frequencies (4.6, 5.1, 7.9, 8.9, 12.9, 15.4, 22.2, 43.1 GHz), to investigate the frequency-dependent position of their VLBI cores ("core-shift") and their overall jet spectral distribution. By cross-correlating the optically thin jet emission, we are able to accurately align the multi-frequency images of three of the jets (1418+546, 2007+777, 2200+420), whose core-shifts and spectra we find consistent with the equipartition regime of the Blandford & Konigl conical jet model, where the position of the radio …
The analysis of the radio light curves of the blazar CTA102 during its 2006 flare revealed a possible interaction between a standing shock wave and a traveling one. In order to better understand this highly non-linear process, we used a relativistic hydrodynamic code to simulate the high energy interaction and its related emission. The calculated synchrotron emission from these simulations showed an increase in turnover flux density, $S_{m}$, and turnover frequency, $ν_{m}$, during the interaction and decrease to its initial values after the passage of the traveling shock wave.
Motivated by recent observations that show increasing fractional linear polarization with increasing wavelength in a small number of optically thin jet features, i.e. "inverse depolarization", we present a physical model that can explain this effect and may provide a new and complementary probe of the low energy particle population and possible helical magnetic fields in extragalactic radio jets. In our model, structural inhomogeneities in the jet magnetic field create cancellation of polarization along the line of sight. Internal Faraday rotation, which increases like wavelength squared, acts…
Ultra-light dark matter may consist of axion-like particles with masses below 10^(-19) eV. Two-photon interactions of these particles affect the polarization of radiation propagating through the dark matter. Coherent oscillations of the Bose condensate of the particles induce periodic changes in the plane of polarisation of emission passing through the condensate. We estimate this effect and analyze MOJAVE VLBA polarization observations of bright downstream features in the parsec-scale jets of active galaxies. Through the non-observation of periodic polarization changes, we are able to constra…
The aim of the present work is to study the radio emission on the parsec scale of 4C 26.42, the Brightest cluster galaxy in Abell 1795, in the framework of radiosources in a dense cool core cluster. We present Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.6, 5, 8.4 and 22 GHz. We performed a spectral index and multiepoch analysis. The source appears two-sided with a well defined and symmetric Z-structure at ~5 mas from the core. The kiloparsec-scale morphology is similar to the parsec-scale structure, but reversed in P.A., with symmetric 90 deg. bends at about 2 arcsec from the nuclear reg…
Seyfert galaxies have traditionally been classified as radio-quiet active galactic nuclei. A proper consideration of the nuclear optical emission however proves that a majority of Seyferts are radio-loud. Kpc-scale radio lobes/bubbles are in fact revealed in sensitive observations at low radio frequencies of several Seyferts. Through the use of very long baseline interferometry, we have been able to determine the direction of the parsec-scale jets in some of these Seyfert galaxies. The misalignment between the parsec-scale jets and the kpc-scale lobes that is typically observed, is either sugg…
The idea that systematic Faraday Rotation gradients across the parsec-scale jets of AGNs can reveal the presence of helical magnetic (B) fields has been around since the early 1990s. These gradients are taken to be due to the systematic variation of the line of sight-B-field across the jet. We present here the parsec-scale Faraday Rotation distributions for the BL Lac objects 0716+714 and 1749+701, based on polarization data obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at two wavelengths near each of the 2cm, 4cm and 6cm bands (0716+714) and at four wavelengths in the range 18-22 cm (1749…
We present here our results on a complete sample of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in nearby Abell Clusters (distance class <3). Combined with data from the literature, we provide parsec scale information for 34 BCGs. We found that also radio loud BCGs have core structures very complex (e.g. 4C 26.42 in Abell 1795). Moreover, we noted a possible dichotomy between BCGs in cool-core clusters and those in non-cool-core clusters. Among resolved sources, those in cool-core clusters tend to have two-sided parsec scale jets, while those in less relaxed clusters have predominantly one-sided parsec …
We conducted radio detection observations at 8.4 GHz for 22 radio-loud broad absorption line (BAL) quasars, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Third Data Release, by a very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. The VLBI instrument we used was developed by the Optically ConnecTed Array for VLBI Exploration project (OCTAVE), which is operated as a subarray of the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). We aimed at selecting BAL quasars with nonthermal jets suitable for measuring their orientation angles and ages by subsequent detailed VLBI imaging studies to evaluate two controversi…
We study the relation between the VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array) radio emission at 15 GHz and the optical nuclear emission at 5100 A for a sample of 233 core-dominated AGN with relativistic jets. For 181 quasars, there is a significant positive correlation between optical nuclear emission and total radio (VLBA) emission of unresolved cores (on milliarcsecond scales) of the jet at 15 GHz. Optical continuum emission correlates with radio emission of the jet for 31 BL Lacs. These correlations confirm that the radio and optical emission are beamed and originate at sub-parsec scales in the innermo…
We conducted very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of five radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies in milliarcsecond resolutions at 1.7 GHz (18 cm) using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Significant parsec-scale structures were revealed for three out of the five sources with high brightness temperature by direct imaging; this is convincing evidence for nonthermal jets. FBQS J1644+2619 with an inverted spectrum showed a prominent one-sided linear structure, indicating Doppler beaming with an intrinsic jet speed of >0.74c. FBQS J1629+4007, also with an inverted spect…
Radio polarimetric observations of Active Galactic Nuclei can reveal the magnetic field structure in the parsec-scale jets of these sources. We have observed the gamma-ray blazar 3C 273 as part of our multi-frequency survey with the Very Long Baseline Array to study Faraday rotation in a large sample of jets. Our observations re-confirm the transverse rotation measure gradient in 3C 273. For the first time the gradient is seen to cross zero which is further indication for a helical magnetic field and spine-sheath structure in the jet. We believe the difference to previous epochs is due to a di…
The Southern Hemisphere VLBI monitoring program TANAMI provides dual-frequency (8 GHz and 22 GHz), milliarcsecond monitoring of extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination. The TANAMI sample consists of a combined radio and gamma-ray selected subsample of currently 80 AGN jets, with new gamma-ray bright sources being added upon detections by Fermi/LAT. Supporting programs provide simultaneous multiwavelength coverage of all sources, in order to construct broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of flaring and quiescence source states, as well as a rapid follow-up of high-energy f…
Radio galaxy phenomenon is directly connected to mass accreting, spinning supermassive black holes found in the active galactic nuclei (AGN). It is still unclear how the collimated jets of relativistic plasma on hundreds to thousands of kpc scale form, and why nearly always they are launched from the nuclei of bulge dominated elliptical galaxies and not flat spirals. Here we present the discovery of giant radio source J2345-0449 (z=0.0755), a clear and extremely rare counter example where relativistic jets are ejected from a luminous and massive spiral galaxy on scale of ~1.6 Mpc, the largest …
I review constraints on the physical properties of AGN jets revealed through Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) studies of the structure and time-evolution of parsec-scale jets, including recent results from the MOJAVE program. In particular I focus on constraints available from very long time baseline studies which probe a wide range of jet behavior over many outbursts. Kinematic studies of propagating jet features find an apparent speed distribution that peaks around 10c for blazars, with speeds up to 50c observed. These observed speeds require Lorentz factors at least as large, implyi…
We describe the parsec-scale kinematics of 200 AGN jets based on 15 GHz VLBA data obtained between 1994 Aug 31 and 2011 May 1. We present new VLBA 15 GHz images of these and 59 additional AGN from the MOJAVE and 2 cm Survey programs. Nearly all of the 60 most heavily observed jets show significant changes in their innermost position angle over a 12 to 16 year interval, ranging from 10 deg to 150 deg on the sky, corresponding to intrinsic variations of ~0.5 deg to ~2 deg. The BL Lac jets show smaller variations than quasars. Roughly half of the heavily observed jets show systematic position ang…
(ABRIDGED) We present here the results from new Very Long Baseline Array observations at 1.6 and 5 GHz of 19 galaxies of a complete sample of 21 UGC FRI radio galaxies. New Chandra data of two sources, viz., UGC00408 and UGC08433, are combined with the Chandra archival data of 13 sources. The 5 GHz observations of ten "core-jet" sources are polarization-sensitive, while the 1.6 GHz observations constitute second epoch total intensity observations of nine "core-only" sources. Polarized emission is detected in the jets of seven sources at 5 GHz, but the cores are essentially unpolarized, except …
We expand our previous studies of the parsec-scale structure of TeV blazars by presenting first-epoch images from VLBA monitoring of ten newer TeV HBLs. All ten sources were successfully detected and imaged, and all showed a one-sided core-jet structure. Many display a morphology common to TeV HBLs: a short, collimated jet followed by a transition to low surface brightness extended emission with a much broader opening angle. The newly detected TeV HBLs tend to be fainter in the radio; the median core flux density was 22 mJy, and the median brightness temperature was 8x10^9 K. The brightness te…
