We present the results of a deep, near-infrared, narrow band imaging survey at a central wavelength of 1.062 microns (FWHM=0.01 microns) in the GOODS-South field using the ESO VLT instrument, HAWK-I. The data are used to carry out the highest redshift search for [OII]3727 emission line galaxies to date. The images reach an emission line flux limit (5 sigma) of 1.5 x 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1, additionally making the survey the deepest of its kind at high redshift. In this paper we identify a sample of [OII]3727 emission line objects at redshift z~1.85 in a co-moving volume of ~4100 Mpc^3. Objects are selected using an observed equivalent width (EW_obs) threshold of EW_obs = 50 angstroms. The sample is used to derive the space density and constrain the luminosity function of [OII] emitters at z=1.85. We find that the space density of objects with observed [OII] luminosities in the range log(L_[OII]) > 41.74 erg s^-1 is log(rho)=-2.45+/-0.14 Mpc^-3, a factor of 2 greater than the observed space density of [OII] emitters reported at z~1.4. After accounting for completeness and assuming an internal extinction correction of A_Halpha=1 mag (equivalent to A_[OII]=1.87), we report a star formation rate density of rho* ~0.38+/-0.06 Msun yr^-1 Mpc^-3. We independently derive the dust extinction of the sample using 24 micron fluxes and find a mean extinction of A_[OII]=0.98+/-0.11 magnitudes (A_Halpha=0.52). This is significantly lower than the A_Halpha=1 (A[OII]=1.86) mag value widely used in the literature. Finally we incorporate this improved extinction correction into the star formation rate density measurement and report rho*~0.24+/-0.06 Msun yr^-1 Mpc^-3.
We present a panoramic narrow-band imaging survey of [OII] emitters in and around the ClG J0218.3-0510 cluster at z=1.62 with Suprime-Cam on Subaru telescope. 352 [OII] emitters were identified on the basis of narrow-band excesses and photometric redshifts. We discovered a huge filamentary structure with some clumps traced by [OII] emitters and found that the ClG J0218.3-0510 cluster is embedded in an even larger super-structure than the one reported previously. 31 [OII] emitters were spectroscopically confirmed with the detection of H-alpha and/or [OIII] emission lines by FMOS observations. I…
We investigate the relationship between Hα and [OII](λ3727) emission in faint star-forming galaxies at z=1.47 with dust uncorrected star formation rates (SFRs) down to 1.4 Msun/yr, using data in two narrow-bands from WFCAM/UKIRT and Suprime-Cam/Subaru. A stacking analysis allows us to investigate Hα emission flux from bright [OII] emitters as well as faint ones for which Hα is not individually detected, and to compare them with a large sample of local galaxies. We find that there is a clear, positive correlation between the average Hα and [OII] luminosities for [OII] emitters at z=1.47, with i…
Emission line galaxies (ELGs) are used in several ongoing and upcoming surveys (SDSS-IV/eBOSS, DESI) as tracers of the dark matter distribution. Using a new galaxy formation model, we explore the characteristics of [OII] emitters, which dominate optical ELG selections at $z\simeq 1$. Model [OII] emitters at $0.5<z<1.5$ are selected to mimic the DEEP2, VVDS, eBOSS and DESI surveys. The luminosity functions of model [OII] emitters are in reasonable agreement with observations. The selected [OII] emitters are hosted by haloes with $M_{\rm halo}\geq 10^{10.3}h^{-1}{\rm M}_{\odot}$, with ~90% of th…
We study statistics of the 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization. We propose to use [OIII] line emitting galaxies to cross-correlate with the 21-cm signal from $z = 7 - 10$. To this aim, we employ simulations of reionization obtained post-processing the high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulation Massive Black-II with the three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer code CRASH to follow the propagation of ionizing photons from a variety of sources. We show that, during the early phases of reionization, the 21-cm signal is positively correlated with the spatial distribution of the […
We conduct a narrow-band imaging survey of [OII] emitters over a 32'x23' area in and around the XMMXCS J2215.9-1738 cluster at z=1.46 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam, and select 380 [OII] emitting galaxies down to 1.4E-17 erg/s/cm2. Among them, 16 [OII] emitters in the cluster central region are confirmed by NIR spectroscopy with Subaru/MOIRCS. We find that [OII] emitters are distributed along filamentary large-scale structures around the cluster. The z'-K vs K colour-magnitude diagram shows that a significantly higher fraction of [OII] emitters is seen on the red sequence in the cluster core than in …
We investigated the fraction of [OII] emitters in galaxies at z~0.9 as a function of the local galaxy density in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) COSMOS 2 square degree field. [OII] emitters are selected by the narrow-band excess technique with the NB711-band imaging data taken with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope. We carefully selected 614 photo-z selected galaxies with M_U3500 < -19.31 at z=0.901-0.920, which includes 195 [OII] emitters, to directly compare results with our previous study at z~1.2. We found that the fraction is almost constant at 0.3 Mpc^-2 < Sigma_10th < 10 Mpc^-2. We a…
We study the angular correlation function of star-forming galaxies and properties of their host dark matter halos at z>1 using the Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC) SSP survey. We use [OII] emitters identified using two narrow-band (NB) filters, NB816 and NB921, in the Deep/UltraDeep layers, which respectively cover large angular areas of 16.3 deg^2 and 16.9 deg^2. Our sample contains 8302 and 9578 [OII] emitters at z=1.19 (NB816) and z=1.47 (NB921), respectively. We detect a strong clustering signal over a wide angular range, 0.001 < θ< 1 [deg], with the bias $b=1.61^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$ (z=1.19) and $b=2.…
The star-forming emission line galaxies (ELGs) with strong [OII] doublet are one of the main spectroscopic targets for the ongoing and upcoming fourth generation galaxy redshift surveys. In this work, we measure the [OII] luminosity $L_{\mathrm{[OII]}}$ and the near-ultraviolet band absolute magnitude $M_{\mathrm{NUV}}$ for a large sample of galaxies in the redshift range of $0.6\leq z <1.45$ from the Public Data Release 2 (PDR-2) of the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS). We aim to construct the intrinsic relationship between the $L_{\mathrm{[OII]}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{NUV}}$ th…
We use three semi-analytic models (SAMs) of galaxy formation and evolution, run on the same 1$h^{-1}$Gpc MultiDark Planck2 cosmological simulation, to investigate the properties of [OII] emission line galaxies in the redshift range $0.6<z<1.2$. We compare model predictions with different observational data sets, including DEEP2--Firefly galaxies with absolute magnitudes. We estimate the [OII] luminosity, L[OII], using simple relations derived both from the models and observations and also using a public code. This code ideally uses as input instantaneous star formation rates (SFRs), which are …
This paper presents the results from the first wide and deep dual narrow-band survey to select H-alpha (Ha) and [OII] line emitters at z=1.47+-0.02 (using matched narrow-band filters in the H and z' bands), exploiting synergies between the UKIRT and Subaru telescopes. The Ha survey at z=1.47 reaches a flux limit of ~7x10^-17 erg/s/cm^2 and detects ~200 Ha emitters over 0.7deg^2, while the much deeper [OII] survey reaches an effective flux of ~7x10^-18 erg/s/cm^2, detecting ~1400 z=1.47 [OII] emitters in a matched co-moving volume of ~2.5x10^5 Mpc^3. The combined survey results in the identific…
We present results from the largest contiguous narrow-band survey in the near-infrared. We have used WIRCam/CFHT and the lowOH2 filter (1.187$\pm$0.005 $μ$m) to survey ~10 deg$^2$ of contiguous extragalactic sky in the SA22 field. A total of ~6000 candidate emission-line galaxies are found. We use deep ugrizJK data to obtain robust photometric redshifts. We combine our data with the High-redshift Emission Line Survey (HiZELS), explore spectroscopic surveys (VVDS, VIPERS) and obtain our own spectroscopic follow-up with KMOS, FMOS and MOSFIRE to derive large samples of high-redshift emission-lin…
Emission line galaxies are one of the main tracers of the large-scale structure to be targeted by the next-generation dark energy surveys. To provide a better understanding of the properties and statistics of these galaxies, we have collected spectroscopic data from the VVDS and DEEP2 deep surveys and estimated the galaxy luminosity functions (LFs) of three distinct emission lines, [OII] ($0.5 < z < 1.3$), Hβ ($0.3 < z < 0.8$) and [OIII] ($0.3 < z < 0.8$). Our measurements are based on 35,639 emission line galaxies and cover a volume of $\sim10^7$Mpc$^3$. We present the first measurement of th…
The next generation of wide-field spectroscopic redshift surveys will map the large-scale galaxy distribution in the redshift range 0.7< z<2 to measure baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO). The primary optical signature used in this redshift range comes from the [OII] emission line doublet, which provides a unique redshift identification that can minimize confusion with other single emission lines. To derive the required spectrograph resolution for these redshift surveys, we simulate observations of the [OII] (3727,3729) doublet for various instrument resolutions, and line velocities. We fores…
In order to understand environmental effects on star formation in high-redshift galaxies, we investigate the physical relationships between the star formation activity, stellar mass, and environment for z ~1.2 galaxies in the 2 deg^2 COSMOS field. We estimate star formation using the [OII] emission line and environment from the local galaxy density. Our analysis shows that for massive galaxies M_*>10^10 M_sun, the fraction of [OII] emitters in high-density environments is 1.7 times higher than in low-density environments, while the [OII] emitter fraction does not depend on environment for low-…
Cluster star-forming galaxies are found to have an excess of Far-Infrared emission relative to H-alpha (Ha), when compared to those in the field, which could be caused by intense AGN activity, dust and/or declining star formation histories. Here we present spectroscopic observations of Ha emitters in the Cl 0939+4713 (Abell 851) super-cluster at z=0.41, using AF2+WYFFOS on the WHT. We measure [OII], Hbeta (Hb), [OIII], Ha and [NII] for a sample of 119 Ha emitters in and around the cluster. We find that 17+-5% of the Ha emitters are AGN, irrespective of environment. For star-forming galaxies, w…
We present an unbiased deep [OII] emission survey of a cluster XMMXCS J2215.9-1738 at z=1.46, the most distant cluster to date with a detection of extended X-ray emission. With wide-field optical and near-infrared cameras (Suprime-Cam and MOIRCS, respectively) on Subaru telescope, we performed deep imaging with a narrow-band filter NB912 (lambda_c=9139A, Delta_lambda=134A) as well as broad-band filters (B, z', J and Ks). From the photometric catalogues, we have identified 44 [OII] emitters in the cluster central region of 6'x6' down to a dust-free star formation rate of 2.6 Msun/yr (3 sigma). …
We present the average metallicity and star-formation rate of Lya emitters (LAEs) measured from our large-area survey with three narrow-band (NB) filters covering the Lya, [OII]3727, and Ha+[NII] lines of LAEs at z=2.2. We select 919 z=2.2 LAEs from Subaru/Suprime-Cam NB data in conjunction with Magellan/IMACS spectroscopy. Of these LAEs, 561 and 105 are observed with KPNO/NEWFIRM near-infrared NB filters whose central wavelengths are matched to redshifted [OII] and Ha nebular lines, respectively. By stacking the near-infrared images of the LAEs, we successfully obtain average nebular-line flu…
The next generation of spectroscopic surveys will target emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to produce constraints on cosmological parameters. We study the large scale structure traced by ELGs using a combination of a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, a code that computes the nebular emission from HII regions using the properties of the interstellar medium, and a large-volume, high-resolution N-body simulation. We consider fixed number density samples where galaxies are selected by either their H$α$, [OIII]$λ5007$ or [OII]$λλ3727-3729$ emission line luminosities. We investigate the assembl…
The z = 6.6 Lyman-$α$ emitter 'CR7' has been claimed to have a Population III-like stellar population, or alternatively, be a candidate Direct Collapse Black Hole (DCBH). In this paper we investigate the evidence for these exotic scenarios using recently available, deeper, optical, near-infrared and mid-infrared imaging. We find strong Spitzer/IRAC detections for the main component of CR7 at 3.6 and 4.5 microns, and show that it has a blue colour ([3.6] - [4.5] $= -1.2\pm 0.3$). This colour cannot be reproduced by current Pop. III or pristine DCBH models. Instead, the results suggest that the …
We investigate the relation between the star-formation activity in galaxies and environment at z=1.2 in the COSMOS field, using the fraction of [OII] emitters and the local galaxy density. The fraction of [OII] emitters appears to be almost constant over the surface density of galaxies between 0.2 and 10 Mpc^-2. This trend is different from that seen in the local universe where the star-formation activity is weaker in higher density regions. To understand this difference between z~1 and z~0, we study the fraction of non-isolated galaxies as a function of local galaxy density. We find that the …
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of galaxies at 0.5<z<1 as a function of environment based on data from the zCOSMOS survey. There is a fair amount of evidence that galaxy properties depend on mass of groups and clusters, in the sense that quiescent galaxies prefer more massive systems. We base our analysis on a mass-selected environment using X-ray groups of galaxies and define the group membership using a large number of spectroscopic redshifts from zCOSMOS. We show that the fraction of red galaxies is higher in groups than in the field at all redshifts probed in our study. In…
We compute synthetic, rest-frame optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxy populations at redshifts from z$\approx$0 to z=8 in a full cosmological framework. We achieve this by coupling, in post-processing, the cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations with new-generation nebular-emission models, accounting for line emission from young stars, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and, for the first time, fast radiative shocks. The optical emission-line properties of simulated galaxies dominated by different ionizing sources are largely consist…
We present near-infrared emission line counts and luminosity functions from the HST WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallels (WISP) program for 29 fields (0.037 deg^2) observed using both the G102 and G141 grisms. Altogether we identify 1048 emission line galaxies with observed equivalent widths greater than 40 Angstroms, 467 of which have multiple detected emission lines. The WISP survey is sensitive to fainter flux levels (3-5x10^-17 ergs/s/cm^2) than the future space near-infrared grism missions aimed at baryonic acoustic oscillation cosmology (1-4x10^-16 ergs/s/cm^2), allowing us to probe the…
We describe the far-infrared (FIR; rest-frame 8--1000μm) properties of a sample of 443 Hα-selected star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS and UDS fields detected by the HiZELS imaging survey. Sources are identified using narrow-band filters in combination with broad-band photometry to uniformly select Hα (and [OII] if available) emitters in a narrow redshift slice at z = 1.47+/-0.02. We use a stacking approach in Spitzer, Herschel (from PEP and HerMES surveys) and AzTEC images to describe their typical FIR properties. We find that HiZELS galaxies with observed Hα luminosities of ~ 10^{8.1-9.1} Lo…
To investigate the ingredients, which allow star-forming galaxies to present Lyalpha line in emission, we studied the kinematics and gas phase metallicity (Z) of the interstellar medium. We used multi-object NIR spectroscopy with Magellan/MMIRS to study nebular emission from z=2-3 star-forming galaxies discovered in 3 MUSYC fields. We detected emission lines from four active galactic nuclei and 13 high-z star-forming galaxies, including Halpha lines down to a flux of 4.E-17 erg/sec/cm^2. This yielded 7 new redshifts. The most common emission line detected is [OIII]5007, which is sensitive to Z…
We estimate the number counts of line emitters at high redshift and their evolution with cosmic time based on a combination of photometry and spectroscopy. We predict the H$α$, H$β$, [OII], and [OIII] line fluxes for more than $35,000$ galaxies down to stellar masses of $\sim10^9$ $M_{\odot}$ in the COSMOS and GOODS-S fields, applying standard conversions and exploiting the spectroscopic coverage of the FMOS-COSMOS survey at $z\sim1.55$ to calibrate the predictions. We calculate the number counts of H$α$, [OII], and [OIII] emitters down to fluxes of $1\times10^{-17}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in …
We present a systematic study for ionization state of inter-stellar medium in galaxies at z=0-3 with ~140,000 SDSS galaxies and 108 intermediate to high redshift galaxies from the literature, using an ionization-parameter sensitive line ratio of [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 and photoionization models. We confirm that z=2-3 galaxies show an [OIII]/[OII] ratio significantly higher than a typical star-forming galaxy of SDSS by a factor of >~10, and the photoionization models reveal that these high-z galaxies have an ionization parameter of log(qion/cm s^{-1})~7.6-9.0, a factor of ~4-10 higher than local …
Strong Halpha Emitters (HAEs) dominate the z~4 Lyman-break galaxy population. We have identified local analogs of these HAEs using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). At z<0.4, only 0.04% of galaxies are classified as HAEs with Halpha equivalent widths (>500A) comparable to that of z~4 HAEs. Local HAEs have lower stellar mass and lower ultraviolet (UV) luminosity than z~4 HAEs, yet the Halpha-to-UV luminosity ratio as well as their specific star-formation rate is consistent with that of z~4 HAEs indicating that they are scaled down versions of high-z star-forming galaxies. Compared to the pre…
We present a sample of $\sim 1000$ emission line galaxies at $z=0.4-4.7$ from the $\sim0.7$deg$^2$ High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS) in the Boötes field identified with a suite of six narrow-band filters at $\approx 0.4-2.1$ $μ$m. These galaxies have been selected on their Ly$α$ (73), {\sc [Oii]} (285), H$β$/{\sc [Oiii]} (387) or H$α$ (362) emission-line, and have been classified with optical to near-infrared colours. A subsample of 98 sources have reliable redshifts from multiple narrow-band (e.g. [O{\sc ii}]-H$α$) detections and/or spectroscopy. In this survey paper, we present the obse…
The studies of the evolution of galaxies in Galaxy Clusters have as a traditional complication the difficulty in establishing cluster membership of those sources detected in the field of view. The determination of spectroscopic redshifts involves long exposure times when it is needed to reach the cluster peripherical regions of/or clusters at moderately large redshifts, while photometric redshifts often present uncertainties too large to offer significant conclusions. The mapping of the cluster of galaxies with narrow band tunable filters makes it possible to reach large redshifts intervals wi…
Lyman alpha (Lya) emission lines should be attenuated in a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Therefore the visibility of Lya emitters at high redshifts can serve as a valuable probe of reionization at about the 50% level. We present an imaging search for z=7.7 Lya emitting galaxies using an ultra-narrowband filter (filter width= 9A) on the NEWFIRM imager at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. We found four candidate Lya emitters in a survey volume of 1.4 x 10^4 Mpc^3, with a line flux brighter than 6x10^-18 erg/cm^2/s (5 sigma in 2" aperture). We also performed a detailed Monte-Carlo simulat…
We present first results from a narrowband imaging program for intermediate redshift emission-line galaxies using the newly commissioned FourStar infrared camera at the 6.5m Magellan telescope. To enable prompt identification of Hα emitters, a pair of custom 1% filters, which sample low-airglow atmospheric windows at 1.19 μm and 2.10 μm, is used to detect both Hα and [OII]λ3727 emission from the same redshift volume at z=2.2. Initial observations are taken over a 130 arcmin^2 area in the CANDELS-COSMOS field. The exquisite image quality resulting from the combination of the instrument, telesco…
We have performed deep imaging surveys for LyA emitters (LAEs) at redshift ~7.3 in two blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep survey Field (SXDF), using the Subaru/Suprime-Cam equipped with new red-sensitive CCDs and a new narrow-band filter, NB1006 (lambda_c=10052 Ang, FWHM=214 Ang). We identified four objects as LAE candidates that exhibit luminosity excess in NB1006. By carrying out deep follow-up spectroscopy for three of them using Subaru/FOCAS and Keck/DEIMOS, a definitively asymmetric emission line is detected for one of them, SXDF-NB1006-2. Assuming th…
Observations of the high redshift Universe through narrow-band filters have proven very successful in the last decade. The 4-meter VISTA telescope, equipped with the wide-field camera VIRCAM, offers a major step forward in wide-field near-infrared imaging, and in order to utilise VISTA's large field-of-view and sensitivity, the Dark Cosmology Centre provided a set of 16 narrow-band filters for VIRCAM. These NB118 filters are centered at a wavelength near 1.19 micron in a region with few airglow emission lines. The filters allow the detection of Halpha emitters at z = 0.8, Hbeta and [OIII] emit…
We present a semi-analytical model of star formation which explains simultaneously the observed UV luminosity function of high redshift Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and luminosity functions of Lyman-alpha emitters. We consider both models that use the Press-Schechter (PS) and Sheth-Tormen (ST) halo mass functions to calculate the abundances of dark matter halos. The Lyman-alpha luminosity functions at z < 4 are well reproduced with only <10% of the LBGs emitting Lyman-alpha lines with rest equivalent width greater than the limiting equivalent width of the narrow band surveys. However, the obser…
We combine high resolution hydrodynamical simulations with an intermediate resolution, dark matter only simulation and an analytical model for the growth of ionized regions to estimate the large scale distribution and redshift evolution of the visibility of Lyman-alpha emission in 6<=z<=8 galaxies. The inhomogeneous distribution of neutral hydrogen during the reionization process results in significant fluctuations in the Lyman-alpha transmissivity on large scales. The transmissivity depends not only on the ionized fraction of the intergalactic medium by volume and the amplitude of the local i…
The peculiar emission properties of the $z \sim 6.6$ Ly$α$ emitter CR7 have been initially interpreted with the presence of either a direct collapse black hole (DCBH) or a substantial mass of Pop III stars. Instead, updated photometric observations by Bowler et al. (2016) seem to suggest that CR7 is a more standard system. Here we confirm that the original DCBH hypothesis is consistent also with the new data. Using radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, we reproduce the new IR photometry with two models involving a Compton-thick DCBH of mass $\approx 7 \times 10^6 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ accreting…
We present initial results from the Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) with Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on a comprehensive survey of emission-line galaxies at z<1.5 based on narrowband (NB) imaging. The first Public Data Release (PDR1) provides us with data from two NB filters, specifically NB816 and NB921 over 5.7 deg$^2$ and 16.2 deg$^2$ respectively. The $5 σ$ limiting magnitudes are 25.2 (UDeep layer, 1.4 deg$^2$) and 24.8 (Deep layer, 4.3 deg$^2$) mag in NB816, and 25.1 (UDeep, 2.9 deg$^2$) and 24.6--24.8 (Deep, 13.3 deg$^2$) mag in NB921. The wide-field imaging allows us to construct unprecedent…
Identifying a protocluster formation at z $\sim$ 4.5 in the COSMOS field: an extension of Taralay protocluster, traced by Ly-alpha emitters surrounding a submm galaxy
As Lyman-alpha photons are scattered by neutral hydrogen, a change with redshift in the Lyman-alpha equivalent width distribution of distant galaxies offers a promising probe of the degree of ionization in the intergalactic medium and hence when cosmic reionization ended. This simple test is complicated by the fact that Lyman-alpha emission can also be affected by the evolving astrophysical details of the host galaxies. In the first paper in this series, we demonstrated both a luminosity and redshift dependent trend in the fraction of Lyman-alpha emitters seen within color-selected Lyman-break…
We present the first publicly released catalog of sources obtained from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). HETDEX is an integral field spectroscopic survey designed to measure the Hubble expansion parameter and angular diameter distance at 1.88<z<3.52 by using the spatial distribution of more than a million Ly-alpha-emitting galaxies over a total target area of 540 deg^2. The catalog comes from contiguous fiber spectra coverage of 25 deg^2 of sky from January 2017 through June 2020, where object detection is performed through two complementary detection methods: one de…
Faint Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emitters become increasingly rarer towards the re-ionisation epoch (z~6-7). However, observations from a very large (~5deg$^2$) Ly$α$ survey at z=6.6 (Matthee et al. 2015) show that this is not the case for the most luminous emitters. Here we present follow-up observations of the two most luminous z~6.6 Ly$α$ candidates in the COSMOS field: `MASOSA' and `CR7'. We used X-SHOOTER, SINFONI and FORS2 (VLT), and DEIMOS (Keck), to confirm both candidates beyond any doubt. We find redshifts of z=6.541 and z=6.604 for MASOSA and CR7, respectively. MASOSA has a strong detection …
We report on a search for ultraluminous Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z=6.6 using the NB921 filter on Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope. We searched a 30 degree squared area around the North Ecliptic Pole, which we observed in broadband g', r', i', z', and y' and narrowband NB816 and NB921, for sources with NB921 < 23.5 and z' - NB921 > 1.3. This corresponds to a selection of log L(Ly-alpha) > 43.5 erg/s. We followed up seven candidate LAEs (out of thirteen) with the Keck DEIMOS spectrograph and confirmed five z=6.6 LAEs, one z=6.6 AGN with a broad Ly-alpha line and a strong …
We investigate the ionizing properties of the pair of bright Ly$α$ emitting galaxies BDF521 and BDF2195 at z=7.012 in order to constrain their contribution to the formation of the BDF "reionized bubble". We obtain constraints on UV emission lines (CIV$λ1548$ doublet, HeII$λ1640$, OIII]$λ1660$ doublet, and CIII]$λ1909$ doublet) from deep VLT-XSHOOTER observations and compare them to those available for other high-redshift objects, and to models with mixed stellar and AGN emission. We use this spectroscopic information together with the photometry available in the field to constrain the physical…
We investigate the ultraviolet (UV) spectral properties of faint Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.9<z<4.6 and provide material to prepare future observations of the faint Universe. We use data from the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey to construct mean rest-frame spectra of continuum-faint (median M$_{UV}$ of -18 and down to M$_{UV}$ of -16), low stellar mass (median value of $10^{8.4}$ and down to $10^{7}M_{\odot}$) LAEs at redshift z>3. We compute various averaged spectra of LAEs sub-sampled on the basis of their observational (e.g., Ly$α$ strength, UV magnitude and spectral sl…
The mutually complementary Euclid and Roman galaxy redshift surveys will use Halpha- and [OIII]-selected emission line galaxies as tracers of the large scale structure at $0.9 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.9$ (Halpha) and $1.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 2.7$ ([OIII]). It is essential to have a reliable and sufficiently precise knowledge of the expected numbers of Halpha-emitting galaxies in the survey volume in order to optimize these redshift surveys for the study of dark energy. Additionally, these future samples of emission-line galaxies will, like all slitless spectroscopy surveys, be affected by a compl…
