The effect of hydrostatic strain and of interstitial hydrogen on the elastic properties of $α$-iron is investigated using \textit{ab initio} density-functional theory calculations. We find that the cubic elastic constants and the polycrystalline elastic moduli to a good approximation decrease linearly with increasing hydrogen concentration. This net strength reduction can be partitioned into a strengthening electronic effect which is overcome by a softening volumetric effect. The calculated hydrogen-dependent elastic constants are used to determine the polycrystalline elastic moduli and anisotropic elastic shear moduli. For the key slip planes in $α$-iron, $[1\bar{1}0]$ and $[11\bar{2}]$, we find a shear modulus reduction of approximately 1.6% per at.% H.
Using ab-initio density functional theory we study the role of interstitial hydrogen on the energetics of the phase transformation of iron from bcc to hcp along Bain's pathway. The impurity creates an internal stress field that can be released through a tetragonal distortion of the lattice, promoting the bcc (ferromagnetic) $\rightarrow$ fcc (frustrated antiferromagnetic) $\rightarrow$ hcp (ferromagnetic) transition. The transformation between crystal systems is accompanied by a drastic magnetic reorganization and sudden variations of the unit cell volume, that can be one of the reasons for em…
An application of the tight binding approximation is presented for the description of electronic structure and interatomic force in magnetic iron, both pure and containing hydrogen impurities. We assess the simple canonical d-band description in comparison to a non orthogonal model including s and d bands. The transferability of our models is tested against known properties including the segregation energies of hydrogen to vacancies and to surfaces of iron. In many cases agreement is remarkably good, opening up the way to quantum mechanical atomistic simulation of the effects of hydrogen on me…
First-principles atomistic molecular dynamics simulation in the micro-canonical and canonical ensembles has been used to study the diffusion of interstitial hydrogen in $α$-iron. Hydrogen to Iron ratios between $θ=1/16 and 1/2 have been considered by locating interstitial hydrogen atoms at random positions in a $2 \times 2 \times 2$ supercell. We find that the average optimum absorption site and the barrier for diffusion depend on the concentration of interestitials. Iron Debye temperature decreases monotonically for increasing concentration of interstitial hydrogen, proving that iron-iron int…
The electronic structure of interstitial hydrogen in a compound semiconductor FeS$_2$ (naturally $n$-type) is inferred from a muon study. An implanted muon (Mu, a pseudo-hydrogen) forms electronically different defect centers discerned by the hyperfine parameter ($ω_{\rm hf}$). A body of evidence indicates that one muon is situated at the center of an iron-cornered tetrahedron with nearly isotropic $ω_{\rm hf}$ (Mu$_{\rm p}$), and that the other exists as a diamagnetic state (Mu$_{\rm d}$, $ω_{\rm hf}\simeq 0$). Their response to thermal agitation indicates that the Mu$_{\rm d}$ center accompa…
The superconducting series, Fe(Te,Se), has a complex structural and magnetic phase diagram that is dependent on composition and occupancy of a secondary interstitial Fe site. In this letter, we show that superconductivity in Fe1+xTe0.7Se0.3 can be enhanced by topotactic deintercalation of the interstitial iron, demonstrating the competing roles of the two iron sites. Neutron diffraction reveals a flattening of the Fe(Te,Se)4 tetrahedron on Fe removal of iron and an increase in negative thermal expansion within the ab plane that correlates with increased lattice strain. Inelastic neutron scatte…
A theoretical modeling of the oxygen diffusivity in silicon and germanium crystals both at normal and high hydrostatic pressure has been carried out using molecular mechanics, semiempirical and ab initio methods. It was established that the diffusion process of an interstitial oxygen atom (Oi) is controlled by the optimum configuration of three silicon (germanium) atoms nearest to Oi. The calculated values of the activation energy Ea(Si)= 2.59 eV, Ea(Ge)= 2.05 eV and pre-exponential factor Do (Si) = 0.28 sm2 s-1, Do (Ge) = 0.39 sm2 s-1 are in a good agreement with experimental ones and for the…
Using neutron inelastic scattering, we investigate the role of interstitial iron on the low-energy spin fluctuations in powder samples of Fe_{1+x}Te_{0.7}Se_{0.3}. We demonstrate how combining the principle of detailed balance along with measurements at several temperatures allows us to subtract both temperature-independent and phonon backgrounds from S(Q,ω) to obtain purely magnetic scattering. For small values of interstitial iron (x=0.009(3)), the sample is superconducting (T_{c}=14 K) and displays a spin gap of 7 meV peaked in momentum at wave vector q_{0}=(π,π) consistent with single crys…
Using neutron inelastic scattering, we investigate the low-energy spin fluctuations in Fe1+xTe as a function of both temperature and interstitial iron concentration. For Fe1.057(7)Te the magnetic structure is defined by a commensurate wavevector of (1/2,0,1/2). The spin fluctuations are gapped with a sharp onset at 7 meV and are three dimensional in momentum transfer, becoming two dimensional at higher energy transfers. On doping with interstitial iron, we find in Fe1.141(5)Te the ordering wavevector is located at the (0.38, 0, 1/2) position and the fluctuations are gapless with the intensity …
The macroscopic behavior of polycrystalline materials is influenced by the local variation of properties caused by the presence of impurities and defects. The effect of these impurities at the atomic scale can either embrittle or strengthen grain boundaries within. Thus, it is imperative to understand the energetics associated with segregation to design materials with desirable properties. Here, molecular statics simulations were employed to analyze the energetics associated with the segregation of various elements (He, H, C, P, and V) to four <100> (Sigma 5 and 13 GBs) and six <110> (Sigma 3,…
Ordering of Interstitial Iron Atoms and Local Structural Distortion Induced by Iron Polycomplex in Fe1+yTe1-xSex as Seen via Transmission Electron Microscopy
The embrittlement of metallic alloys by liquid metals leads to catastrophic material failure and severely impacts their structural integrity. The weakening of grain boundaries by the ingress of liquid metal and preceding segregation in the solid are thought to promote early fracture. However, the potential of balancing between the segregation of cohesion-enhancing interstitial solutes and embrittling elements inducing grain boundary decohesion is not understood. Here, we unveil the mechanisms of how boron segregation mitigates the detrimental effects of the prime embrittler, zinc, in a $Σ5\,[0…
The theoretical analysis of the process of diffusion of interstitial oxygen atoms and hydrogen molecules in silicon and germanium crystals has been performed. The calculated values of the activation energy and pre-exponential factor for an interstitial oxygen atom Ea(Si) = 2.59 eV, Ea(Ge) = 2.05 eV, D(Si)= 0.28 cm2s-1, D(Ge)= 0.39 cm2s-1 and interstitial hydrogen molecule Ea(Si) = 0.79-0.83 eV, Ea(Ge) = 0.58-0.62 eV, D(Si)= 7.4 10(-4) cm2s-1, D(Ge)= 6.5 10(-4) cm2s-1 are in an excellent agreement with experimental ones and for the first time describe perfectly an experimental temperature depen…
Understanding the interplay among different magnetic exchange interactions and its physical consequences, especially in the presence of itinerant electrons and disorders, remains one of the central themes in condensed matter physics. In this vein, the coupling between antiferromagnetic and spin glass orders may lead to large exchange bias, a property of potential broad technological applications. In this article, we report the coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and spin glass behaviors in a quasi-one-dimensional iron telluride TaFe$_{1+x}$Te$_3$ ($x$=0.25). Its antiferromagnetism is believ…
Density functional theory predicts clusters in the form of the C15 Laves phase to be the most stable cluster of self-interstitials in iron at small sizes. The C15 clusters can form as a result of irradiation, but their prevalence and survival in harsh irradiation conditions have not been thoroughly studied. Using a new bond-order potential optimised for molecular dynamics simulations of radiation damage, we explore the dynamical stability of the C15 clusters in iron under irradiation conditions. We find that small C15 clusters make up 5-20% of the interstitial clusters formed directly in casca…
Density-functional theory calculations based on conventional as well as hybrid exchange-correlation functionals have been carried out to study the properties of helium in various oxides (Al2O3, TiO2, Y2O3, YAP, YAG, YAM, MgO, CaO, BaO, SrO) as well as at oxide-iron interfaces. Helium interstitials in bulk oxides are shown to be energetically more favorable than substitutional helium, yet helium binds to existing vacancies. The solubility of He in oxides is systematically higher than in iron and scales with the free volume at the interstitial site nearly independently of the chemical compositio…
This paper presents an experimental and theoretical study of the distribution of carbon atoms in the octahedral interstitial sites of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase of the iron-carbon system. The experimental part of the work consists of Mossbauer measurements in Fe-C alloys with up to about 12 atomic percent C, which are interpreted in terms of two alternative models for the distribution of C atoms in the interstitial sites. The theoretical part combines an analysis of the chemical potential of C based on the quasichemical approximation to the statistical mechanics of interstitial soluti…
We study the kinetics of the redistribution of impurity atoms in the elastic fields of dislocations by computer simulation methods. A work consists of several stages. The first is the simulation of a dislocation core structure with a Burgers vector along [100] direction by using the modified molecular static method. The second is obtaining the coefficients that determine the influence of the components of the strain tensor on the diagonal elements of the matrix of diffusion coefficients and in the equations for fluxes of carbon atoms in bcc iron. The third stage is associated with modeling the…
Iron-based superconductors are well-known for their intriguing phase diagrams, which manifest a complex interplay of electronic, magnetic and structural degrees of freedom. Among the phase transitions observed are superconducting, magnetic, and several types of structural transitions, including a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic and a collapsed-tetragonal transition. In particular, the widely-observed tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition is believed to be a result of an electronic order that is coupled to the crystalline lattice and is, thus, referred to as nematic transition. Nematicity is therefo…
We present a comprehensive set of first principles electronic structure calculations to study transition metal solutes and their interactions with point defects in austenite. Clear trends were observed across the series. Solute-defect interactions were strongly correlated to the solute size factors, consistent with local strain field effects. Strong correlations with results in ferrite show insensitivity to the underlying crystal structure in Fe. Oversized solutes act as strong traps for vacancy and self-interstitial defects and as nucleation sites for the development of proto-voids and small …
First-principles density-functional theory has been used to investigate equilibrium geometries, total energies, and diffusion barriers for H as an interstitial impurity absorbed in $α$-Fe. Internal strains/stresses upon hydrogen absorption are a crucial factor to understand preferred absorption sites and diffusion. For high concentrations, H absorbs near the octahedral site favoring a large tetragonal distortion of the BCC lattice. For low concentration, H absorbs near the tetrahedral site minimizing the elastic energy stored on nearby cells. Diffusion paths depend on the concentration regime …
The coexistence pressure of two phases is a well-defined point at fixed temperature. In experiment, however, due to non-hydrostatic stresses and a stress-dependent potential energy barrier, different measurements yield different ranges of pressure with a hysteresis. Accounting for these effects, we propose an inequality for comparison of the theoretical value to a plurality of measured intervals. We revisit decades of pressure experiments on the bcc - hcp transformations in iron, which are sensitive to non-hydrostatic conditions and sample size. From electronic-structure calculations, we find …
The effect of interstitial hydrogen on the elastic properties of $α$-iron is investigated using \textit{ab initio} density functional theory. We find that while the overall strength properties are reduced by H, the effects are mainly due to the resulting local volume expansion. We use these concentration-dependent elastic moduli to model the effects of homogeneous strain fields on H solubility and make extrapolations to H-solubility in the spatially-varying strain fields of realistic dislocations. We find that H is strongly trapped by dislocations of both the edge and screw variety, leading to…
Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, whe…
The effects of micro-alloying element, vanadium, on a bcc Fe Σ3(111)[1-10] symmetric tilt grain boundary strength are studied using density functional theory calculations. The lowest energy configuration of the grain boundary structure are obtained from the first-principles calculations. The substitutional and interstitial point defect formation energies of vanadium in the grain boundary are compared. The substitutional defect is prefered to interstitial one. The segregation energies of vanadium onto the grain boundary and its fractured surfaces are computed. The cohesive energy calculation of…
The calculated effects of interstitial hydrogen on the elastic properties of alpha-iron from our earlier work are used to describe the H interactions with homogeneous strain fields using ab initio methods. In particular we calculate the H solublility in Fe subject to hydrostatic, uniaxial, and shear strain. For comparison, these interactions are parametrised successfully using a simple model with parameters entirely derived from ab initio methods. The results are used to predict the solubility of H in spatially-varying elastic strain fields, representative of realistic dislocations outside the…
Modeling point defects at an atomic scale requires careful treatment of the long-range atomic relaxations. This elastic field can strongly affect point defect properties calculated in atomistic simulations because of the finite size of the system under study. This is an important restriction for ab initio methods which are limited to a few hundred atoms. We propose an original approach coupling ab initio calculations and linear elasticity theory to obtain the properties of an isolated point defect for reduced supercell sizes. The reliability and benefit of our approach are demonstrated for thr…
Dislocation-solute interaction plays fundamental roles in mechanical properties of alloys. Here, we disclose the essential features of dislocation-carbon interaction in austenitic Fe at the atomistic scale. We show that passage of a Shockley partial dislocation in face-centered cubic iron is able to move carbon atoms on the slip plane forward by one Burgers vector, revealing a novel dissociated dislocation-mediated transport mechanism. This mechanism is induced by shear, which is distinct from the normal thermally activated diffusion process. Furthermore, we show that there exists a fast diffu…
We investigate the thermodynamics and kinetics of a hydrogen interstitial in magnetic α-iron, taking account of the quantum fluctuations of the proton as well as the anharmonicities of lattice vibrations and hydrogen hopping. We show that the diffusivity of hydrogen in the lattice of BCC iron deviates strongly from an Arrhenius behavior at and below room temperature. We compare a quantum transition state theory to explicit ring polymer molecular dynamics in the calculation of diffusivity and we find that the role of phonons is to inhibit, not to enhance, diffusivity at intermediate temperature…
Controlling the contamination of silicon materials by iron, especially dissolved interstitial iron (Fe$_{\mathrm{i}}$), is a longstanding problem with recent developments and several open issues. Among these we have the question whether hydrogen can assist iron diffusion, or if significant amounts of substitutional iron (Fe$_{\mathrm{s}}$) can be created. Using density functional calculations we explore the structure, formation energies, binding energies, migration, and electronic levels of several FeH complexes in Si. We find that a weakly bound Fe$_{\mathrm{i}}$H pair has a migration barrier…
We present calculations of free energy barriers and diffusivities as functions of temperature for the diffusion of hydrogen in bcc-Fe. This is a fully quantum mechanical approach since the total energy landscape is computed using a new self consistent, transferable tight binding model for interstitial impurities in magnetic iron. Also the hydrogen nucleus is treated quantum mechanically and we compare here two approaches in the literature both based in the Feynman path integral formulation of statistical mechanics. We find that the quantum transition state theory which admits greater freedom f…
Fe$_{1+x}$Te is a two dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet that becomes superconducting on anion substitution on the Te site. The parent phase of Fe$_{1+x}$Te is sensitive to the amount of interstitial iron situated between the iron-tellurium layers displaying collinear magnetic order coexisting with low temperature metallic resistivity for small concentrations of interstitial iron $x$ and helical magnetic order for large values of $x$. While this phase diagram has been established through scattering [see for example E. E. Rodriguez $\textit{et al.}$ Phys. Rev. B ${\bf{84}}$, 064403 (2011…
In this paper, two fatigue lifetime prediction models are tested on TiAl intermetallic using results from uniaxial low-cycle fatigue tests. Both assessments are based on dissipated energy but one of them considers a hydrostatic pressure correction. This work allows to confirm, on this kind of material, the linear nature, already noticed on silicon molybdenum cast iron, TiNi shape memory alloy and 304L stainless steel, of dissipated energy, corrected or not with hydrostatic pressure, according to the number of cycles to failure. This study also highlights that, firstly, the dissipated energy mo…
Pressure is well known to significantly raise the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, in both iron pnictides and cuprate based superconductors. Little work has been done, however, on how pressure can affect the flux pinning and critical current density in the Fe-based superconductors. Here, we propose to use hydrostatic pressure to significantly enhance flux pinning and Tc in polycrystalline pnictide bulks. We have chosen Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 polycrystalline samples as a case study. We demonstrate that the hydrostatic pressure up to 1.2 GPa can not only significantly increase Tc from 15 K (un…

The non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure makes Mn3Sn exhibit exotic properties. At present, it has been found that both the hydrostatic pressure and the strain introduced by interstitial N atoms have a great influence on this magnetic structure. Here, the effect of the residual strain (RS) on it is investigated. AC and DC magnetic measurement results suggest that Mn3Sn without RS has the non-collinear AFM structure only in the temperature range of 285 K to 400 K; while Mn3Sn with RS has a non-coplanar AFM structure in the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K. Both anomalous Ha…
Hybrid or metal organic framework (MOF) perovskites of general composition, ABX$_3$, are known to show interesting properties which can lead to variety of technological applications. Our first principles study shows they are also potential candidates for exhibiting cooperative spin-state transitions upon application of external stimuli. We demonstrate this by considering two specific Fe-based MOF perovskites, namely Dimethylammonium Iron Formate, [CH$_{3}$NH$_{2}$CH$_{3}$][Fe(HCOO)$_3$] and Hydroxylammonium Iron Formate, [NH$_{3}$OH][Fe(HCOO)$_3$]. Both the compounds are found to undergo high-…
Doping of the band insulator FeS$_2$ with Co on the Fe site introduces a small density of itinerant carriers and magnetic moments. The lattice constant, AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat have been measured over the $0\le x\le 0.085$ range of Co concentration. The variation of the AC susceptibility with hydrostatic pressure has also been measured in a small number of our samples. All of these quantities show systematic variation with $x$ including a paramagnetic to disordered ferromagnetic transition at $x=0.007\pm 0.002$. A detailed analysis of the changes wit…

The effect of pressure on the room temperature solubility of hydrogen in Zircaloy-4 was examined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction on small ground flake samples in a diamond anvil cell at pressures up to 20.9 GPa. Different combinations of hydrogen level/state in the sample and of pressure transmitting medium were examined; in all three cases examined, it could be concluded that pressure resulted in the dissolution of d hydrides and that interstitial hydrogen retards the formation of w Zr. A pressure of around 9 GPa was required to halve the hydride fraction. These results imply that the eff…
The scaling behavior of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect is studied by deforming a substitutional alloy, Al-2.5%Mg and an interstitial alloy, low carbon steel (0.15%C, 0.33%Mn, 0.04%P, 0.05%S, 0.15%Si and rest Iron) at room temperature for a wide range of strain rates. To reveal the exact scaling nature, the time series data of true stress vs. time, obtained during the tensile deformation (corrected for drift due to strain hardening by polynomial fitting method), are analyzed by two complementary methods: the standard deviation analysis and the diffusion entropy analysis. From these anal…
We studied theoretically the optical properties of C$_{60}$ fullerene microcrystals as a function of hydrostatic pressure with first-principles many-body theories. Calculations of the electronic properties were done in the GW approximation. We computed electronic excited states in the crystal by diagonalizing the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). Our results confirmed the existence of bound excitons in the crystal. Both the electronic gap and optical gap decrease continuously and non-linearly as pressure of up to 6 GPa is applied. As a result, the absorption spectrum shows strong redshift. We als…
Structural, elastic and thermal properties of cementite (Fe$_3$C) were studied using a Modified Embedded Atom Method (MEAM) potential for iron-carbon (Fe-C) alloys. Previously developed Fe and C single element potentials were used to develop an Fe-C alloy MEAM potential, using a statistically-based optimization scheme to reproduce structural and elastic properties of cementite, the interstitial energies of C in bcc Fe as well as heat of formation of Fe-C alloys in L$_{12}$ and B$_1$ structures. The stability of cementite was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations at high temperatures. …
