We examine a contact between a superconductor whose order parameter changes sign across the Brillioun zone, and an ordinary, uniform-sign superconductor. Within a Ginzburg-Landau type model, we find that if the the barrier between the two superconductors is not too high, the frustration of the Josephson coupling between different portions of the Fermi surface across the contact can lead to surprising consequences. These include time-reversal symmetry breaking at the interface and unusual energy-phase relations with multiple local minima. We propose this mechanism as a possible explanation for the half-integer flux quantum transitions in composite niobium--iron pnictide superconducting loops, which were discovered in a recent experiment [Chen et al., Nature Phys. \textbf{6},260 (2010)].
We present a theory for the Josephson effect in an unconventional superconductor / one-dimensional electron gas / unconventional superconductor (s/o/s) junction, where the Josephson current is carried by components injected perpendicular to the interface. When superconductors on both sides have triplet symmetries, the Josephson current is enhanced at low temperature due to the zero-energy states formed near the interface. Measuring Josephson current in this s/o/s junction, we can identify parity of the superconductor.
Josephson junctions between a $FeAs$-based superconductor with antiphase s-wave pairing and a conventional s-wave superconductor are studied. The translational invariance in a planar junction between a single crystal pnictide and an aluminum metal greatly enhances the relative weight of electron pockets in the pnictide to the critical current. In a wide doping region of the pnictide, a planar and a point contact junctions have opposite phases, which can be used to design a tri-junction ring with $π$ phase to probe the antiphase pairing.
Recent findings of superconductors that simultaneously exhibit multiple spontaneously broken symmetries, such as ferromagnetic order or lack of an inversion center and even combinations of such broken symmetries, have led to much theoretical and experimental research. We consider quantum transport in a junction consisting of a ferromagnetic metal and a non-unitary ferromagnetic superconductor. It is shown that the conductance spectra provides detailed information about the superconducting gaps, and is thus helpful in determining the pairing symmetry of the Cooper pairs in ferromagnetic superco…
Tunneling conductance in ferromagnet / unconventional superconductor junctions is studied theoretically as a function of temperatures and spin-polarization in feromagnets. In d-wave superconductor junctions, the existence of a zero-energy Andreev bound state drastically affects the temperature-dependence of the zero-bias conductance (ZBC). In p-wave triplet superconductor junctions, numerical results show a wide variety in temperature-dependence of the ZBC depending on the direction of the magnetic moment in ferromagnets and the pairing symmetry in superconductors such as $p_{x}$, $p_{y}$ and …
Electron transport between two superconductors through an Anderson impurity in the Kondo regime is investigated within the slave boson mean field approximation. The current, shot noise power and Fano factor are displayed versus the applied bias voltage in the subgap region and found to be strongly dependent on the ratio between the Kondo temperature $T_{K}$ and the superconducting gap $Δ$. In particular, the $I-V$ curve exposes an excess current in the limit $T_{K}/Δ\gg 1$.
We have made a phase-sensitive measurement on the corner junction of the iron-based superconductor BaFe1.8Co0.2As2, and observed the typical Fraunhofer-like diffraction pattern. The result suggests that there is no phase shift between the a-c face and b-c face of a crystal, which indicates that the superconducting wavefunction of the iron based superconductor is different from that of a cuprate superconductor.
Resonant activation and noise-enhanced stability were observed in an underdamped real physical system, i.e., Josephson tunnel junctions. With a weak sinusoidal driving force applied, the thermal activated escape from a potential well underwent resonance-like behavior as a function of the driving frequency. The resonance also crucially depended on the initial condition of the system. Numerical simulations showed good agreement with the experimental results.
The Josephson current through a 1D quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions is calculated. We show that the interplay of Rashba and Zeeman interactions gives rise to a supercurrent through the 1D conductor that is anomalous in the sense that it persists in the absence of any phase difference between the two superconducting leads to which it is attached. The electron dispersion asymmetry induced by the Rashba interaction in a Luttinger-liquid wire plays a significant role for poorly transmitting junctions. It is shown that for a weak or moderate electron-electron i…
Conductance spectra measurements of highly transparent ramp-type junctions made of superconducting $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4$ electrodes and non superconducting $La_{1.65}Sr_{0.35}CuO_4$ barrier are reported. At low temperatures below $T_c$, these junctions have two prominent Andreev-like conductance peaks with clear steps at energies $Δ_1$ and $Δ_2$ with $Δ_2 > 2Δ_1$. No such peaks appear above $T_c$. The doping dependence at 2 K shows that both $Δ_1$ and $Δ_2$ scale roughly as $T_c$. $Δ_1$ is identified as the superconducting energy gap, while a few scenarios are proposed as for the origin of $Δ_…
We consider a Josephson junction with an arbitrary transmission coefficient $\mathcal{D}$ between a singlet and a triplet superconductor with the latter order parameter characterized by a d-vector of the form ($k_x\hat{y}-k_y\hat{x}$). Various quantities such as the tunnelling current, spin accumulation, and spin current are calculated via the quasiclassical Green's functions. We also present a symmetry argument on the existence of these quantities and their dependencies on the phase difference across the junction. A physical picture is also given in terms of the Andreev states near the juncti…
A Josephson junction consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly coupled with two-band and single-band superconductors exposes a time reversal breaking ground state when the coupling between the two bands exceeds a certain threshold. The critical regime occurs around local moment formation. This indicates a fundamental and distinct role of strong correlations: Driving a system into a time reversal breaking ground state. One of the observable consequences is that the impurity magnetization in this phase is reduced.
Carrier injection performed in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) hetero-structure junctions exhibited tunable resistance that was entirely different with behaviors of semiconductor devices. Tunable superconductivity in YBCO junctions, increasing over 20 K in transition temperature, has achieved by using electric processes. To our knowledge, this is the first observation that intrinsic property of high TC superconductors superconductivity can be adjusted as tunable functional parameters of devices. The fantastic phenomenon caused by carrier injection was discussed based on a proposed charge carr…
Mechanical-controllable break junctions of the heavy-fermion superconductors can show Josephson-like superconducting anomalies. But a systematic study on the contact size demonstrates that these anomalies are mainly due to Maxwell's resistance being suppressed in the superconducting heavy-fermion phase. Up to day, we could not find any superconducting features by vacuum-tunnelling spectroscopy, providing further evidence for the pair-breaking effect of the heavy-fermion interfaces.
We present a phenomenological model for the vortex dynamics in the peak effect region of weakly pinned superconductors. We explain the history dependent dynamic response of the metastable vortex states subjected to a transport current and the hysteretic voltage-current characteristics observed in the vicinity of peak effect in weakly pinned superconductors. A strong variation in voltage current characteristics with the current sweep rate and the anomalous dependence of critical current density $J_c$ on the magnetic field sweep rate have also been accounted for by this model.
In layered superconductors, Josephson junctions may be formed within the unit cell due to sufficiently low interlayer coupling. These intrinsic Josephson junction (iJJ) systems have attracted considerable interest for their application potential in quantum computing as well as efficient sources of THz radiation, closing the famous "THz gap". So far, iJJ have been demonstrated in single-band, copper-based high-Tc superconductors, mainly in Ba-Sr-Ca-Cu-O. Here we report clear experimental evidence for iJJ behavior in the iron-based superconductor (V2Sr4O6)Fe2As2. The intrinsic junctions are iden…
Graphene is a relatively new material (2004) made of atomic layers of carbon arranged in a honeycomb lattice. Josephson junction devices are made from graphene by depositing two parallel superconducting leads on a graphene flake. These devices have hysteretic current-voltage characteristics with a supercurrent branch and Shapiro steps appear when irradiated with microwaves. These properties motivate us to investigate the presence of quantum metastable states similar to those found in conventional current-biased Josephson junctions. We present work investigating the nature of these metastable s…
We study the current-phase relation of a ballistic SIFIT junction, consisting of a spin-singlet superconductor (S), a weak ferromagnetic metal (F), a spin-triplet superconductor (T), and insulating ferromagnetic interfaces (I). We use the generalized quasiclassical formalism developed by A. Millis et al. to compute the current density and the free energy of the junction for arbitrary orientation of the magnetizations of the junction barrier. We investigate in detail the effect of the distribution of magnetization on the various harmonics of the current-phase relation and the transition of the …
The magnetic and transport properties of $Pd_{0.99}Fe_{0.01}$ thin films have been studied. We have found that the Curie temperature of the films is about 20 K and the magnetic properties strongly depend on temperature below $T_{Curie}$. We have also fabricated the set of superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor josephson junctions $Nb-PdFe-Nb$. The temperature dependence of the junctions with the ferromagnet layer thickness of about 36 nm shows the reentrant behaviour that is the evidence of the transition of the junction into the $π$-state.
We extend the circuit theory of superconductivity to cover transport and proximity effect in mesoscopic systems that contain unconventional superconductor junctions. The approach fully accounts for zero-energy Andreev bound states forming at the surface of unconventional superconductors. As a simple application, we investigate the transport properties of a diffusive normal metal in series with a d-wave superconductor junction. We reveal the competition between the formation of Andreev bound states and proximity effect, that depends on the crystal orientation of the junction interface.
We study the pi phase in a superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction, with a ferromagnet showing a cycloidal spiral spin modulation with in-plane propagation vector. Our results reveal a high sensitivity of the junction to the spiral order and indicate the presence of 0-pi quantum phase transitions as function of the spiral wave vector. We find that the chiral magnetic order introduces chiral superconducting triplet pairs that strongly influence the physics in such Josephson junctions, with potential applications in nanoelectronics and spintronics.
We predict that the Josephson current in a clean s-wave superconductor-normal metal-d-wave superconductor junction is periodic in superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ with period $π$ instead of $2π$. The frequency of non-stationary Josephson effect is correspondingly $2ω_J = 4eV.$ The effect is due to coexistence in the normal layer of current carrying Andreev levels with phase differences $ϕ$ and $ϕ+π.$
The tunneling conductance between a metal and a multiband s-wave superconductor with a thin layer of single-band s-wave superconductor sandwiched in between is examined in this paper. We show that an in-gap peak in conductance curve is found as a result of the formation of in-gap bound state between the single-band and multiband superconductor junctions if the phases of the superconducting order parameters of the multiband superconductor are frustrated. The implication of this result in determining the gap symmetry of the iron-based superconductors is discussed.
We show that at zero temperature the supercurrent through the superconductor - ferromagnetic metal - superconductor junctions does not decay exponentially with the thickness $L$ of the junction. At large $L$ it has a random sample-specific sign which can change with a change in temperature. In the case of mesoscopic junctions the phase of the order parameter in the ground state is a random sample-specific quantity. In the case of junctions of large area the ground state phase difference is $\pm π/2$.
We predict a novel type of Josephson effect to occur in triplet superconductor - ferromagnet - triplet superconductor Josephson junctions. We show that the Josephson current, I_J, exhibits a rich dependence on the relative orientation between the ferromagnetic moment and the d-vectors of the superconductors. This dependence can be used to build several types of Josephson current switches. Moreover, we predict an unconventional temperature dependence of I_J in which I_J changes sign with increasing temperature
Transport properties of a superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor (S-Sm-S) junction with superlattice structure are investigated. Differential resistance as a function of voltage shows oscillatory behavior under the irradiation of radio-frequency (RF) waves with the specific frequency of 1.77 GHz regardless of the superconducting materials and the junction lengths. Experimental data are quantitatively explained in terms of the coupling of superconducting quasiparticles with long-wavelength acoustic phonons indirectly excited by the RF waves. We propose that the strong coupling causes the f…
Interfaces between materials with differently ordered phases present unique opportunities for exotic physical properties, especially the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures. The investigation of zero- and pi-junctions has been of particular interest for both fundamental physical science and emerging technologies. Here, we report the experimental observation of giant oscillatory Gilbert damping in the superconducting Nb/NiFe/Nb junctions with respect to the NiFe thickness. This observation suggests an unconventional spin pump…
A method to identify the parity of unconventional superconductors is proposed based on tunneling spectroscopy. For a model of calculation, we adopt a ferromagnet/superconductor (F/S) junction of which tunneling current is spin polarized. The tunneling conductance spectra are shown to be quite sensitive to the direction of the magnetization axis in the ferromagnet only when the superconductor has odd parity. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish the parity of the superconductor by measuring the tunneling spectroscopy in F/S junctions.
To investigate the transport properties of iron based superconductors, we prepared planar hybrid superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS') thin film junctions with BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 as base electrode. As counter electrode we used a lead indium alloy, while the normal metal layer was formed by thin gold films. Temperature dependent measurements of the electrical conductivity were strongly influenced by the properties of the electrodes. We developed a junction structure that allows us to characterize the electrodes, too, including the behavior of their normal state resistance in order to c…
We analyze the proximity effect of superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructures and point out that the scattering of quasiparticle of spin-triplet pairs by local magnetic moments leads to large resistance peak slightly below the superconducting transition temperature of the superconductor. Both the temperature and the magnitude of the resistance peak decrease with increasing magnetic field, which agree quite well with the experimental results reported in [Nature Phys. 6, 389 (2010)].
To reveal the influence of the exchange interaction on the Josephson effect, the d.c. Josephson current in unconventional-superconductor / ferromagnet / unconventional-superconductor junctions is studied. When the two superconductors have d-wave symmetry, the Josephson current is drastically suppressed with the increase of the exchange interaction. On the other hand, when the two superconductors have different parities, e.g. s-wave and p-wave, an enhancement of the Josephson current is obtained with the increment of the exchange interaction due to the break-down of SU(2) symmetry in the spin s…
Understanding the subgap behavior of Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions is important in order to be able to accurately model the thermal properties of the junctions. Hekking and Nazarov developed a theory in which NIS subgap current in thin-film structures can be modeled by multiple Andreev reflections. In their theory, the current due to Andreev reflections depends on the junction area and the junction resistance area product. We have measured the current due to Andreev reflections in NIS tunnel junctions for various junction sizes and junction resistance area products and…
On the basis of the Keldysh method of non-equilibrium systems, we develop a theory of electron tunneling in normal-metal/superconductor junctions. By using the tunneling Hamiltonian model (being appropriate for the tight-binding systems), the tunneling current can be exactly obtained in terms of the equilibrium Green functions of the normal metal and the superconductor. We calculate the conductance of various junctions. The discrepancy between the present treatment and the well-known scheme by Blonder, Tinkham, and Klapwijk is found for some junctions of low interfacial potential barrier.
We consider a model NISIN system with two junctions in series, where N is a normal metal, S is a superconductor and I is an insulator. We assume that the resistance of the first junction is high, while the resistance of the second one is low. In this case the first junction cools the left normal electrode, while the second junction partially removes excited quasiparticles from the superconductor. We consider cooling properties of this double junction structure. It is shown that the cooling power depends strongly on the ratio of the resistances of the two junctions. In conclusion, we derive a g…
Charge transport properties of a diffusive normal metal /triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junction are studied based on the Keldysh-Nambu quasiclassical Green's function formalism. % Contrary to the unconventional singlet superconductor junction case, the mid gap Andreev resonant state (MARS) at the interface of the TS is shown to enhance the proximity effect in the DN. % The total resistance of the DN/TS junction is drastically reduced and is completely independent of the resistance of the DN in the extreme case. % Such anomalous transport accompanies a giant zero-bias peak in the conductance s…
Complex oxides exhibit a variety of unusual physical properties, which can be used for designing novel electronic devices. Here we fabricate and study experimentally nano-scale Superconductor/ Ferromagnet/Superconductor junctions with the high-Tc cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 and the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite ferromagnets LaXMnO3 (X: Ca or Sr). We demonstrate that in a broad temperature range the magnetization of a manganite nanoparticle, forming the junction interface, switches abruptly in a mono-domain manner. The CMR phenomenon translates the magnetization loop into a hys…
We study a diffusive superconductor--ferromagnet--superconductor (SFS) junction with in-plane ferromagnetic domains. Close to the superconducting transition temperature, we describe the proximity effect in the junction with the linearized Usadel equations. We find that properties of such a junction depend on the size of the domains relative to the magnetic coherence length. In the case of large domains, the junction exhibits transitions to the $π$ state, similarly to a single-domain SFS junction. In the case of small domains, the magnetization effectively averages out, and the junction is alwa…
A formula for the Josephson current between two superconductors with anisotropic pairing symmetries is derived based on the mean-field theory of superconductivity. Zero-energy states formed at the junction interfaces is one of basic phenomena in anisotropic superconductor junctions. In the obtained formula, effects of the zero-energy states on the Josephson current are taken into account through the Andreev reflection coefficients of a quasiparticle. In low temperature regimes, the formula can describe an anomaly in the Josephson current which is a direct consequence of the exsitence of zero-e…
This paper theoretically discusses the spin current in spin-triplet superconductor / insulator / spin-triplet superconductor junctions. At low temperatures, a midgap Andreev resonant state anomalously enhances not only the charge current but also the spin current. The coupling between the Cooper pairs and the electromagnetic fields leads to the Frounhofer pattern in the direct current spin flow in magnetic fields and the alternative spin current under applied bias-voltages.
We study the transport properties of a diffusive Josephson junction between two spin-split superconductors made of superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator bilayers (FIS) on top of a 3D topological insulator (TI). We derive the corresponding Usadel equation describing the quasiclassical Green's functions in these systems and first solve the equation analytically in the weak-proximity case. We demonstrate the appearance of an anomalous phase in the absence of an external magnetic field. We also explore non-reciprocal electronic transport. Specifically, we calculate the junction's diode efficiency…
In this work we study by numerical methods the phase dynamics in ballistic graphene-based short Josephson junctions. The supercurrent through a graphene junction shows a non-sinusoidal phase-dependence, unlike a conventional junction ruled by the well-known d.c. Josephson relation. A superconductor-graphene-superconductor system exhibits superconductive quantum metastable states similar to those present in normal current-biased JJs. We explore the effects of thermal and correlated fluctuations on the escape time from these metastable states, when the system is stimulated by an oscillating bias…
We investigate the coupling between ferromagnet and superconducting phase dynamics in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction. The current-voltage characteristics of the junction demonstrate a pattern of subharmonic current steps which forms a devil's staircase structure. We show that a width of the steps becomes maximal at ferromagnetic resonance. Moreover, we demonstrate that the structure of the steps and their widths can be tuned by changing the frequency of the external magnetic field, ratio of Josephson to magnetic energy, Gilbert damping and the junction size.
We study Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (Nb-Cu0.47 Ni0.53-Nb) Josephson junctions with spatial variations in the barrier thickness. Critical current vs. magnetic flux diffraction patterns indicate that the critical current density changes sign along the width of the junctions, creating interfaces between 0 and pi junction regions around which spontaneous currents can circulate. Shapiro steps observed at half-integer Josephson voltages can be explained by the phase-locking of the spontaneous circulating currents to the applied rf modulation.
Recent measurements on a class of high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs) have shown that Cooper-pairs wavefunction is a d-wave, while in another class, d-wave and s-wave may coexist. Conventional low-Tc superconductors are s-wave superconductors. When d-wave Cooper-pairs are injected in a superconductor that can sustain s-wave pairing, d-wave pairs are subject to transition to s-wave pairs and energy is irradiated by means of gravitons. We show that in s-wave to d-wave type superconductor (SDS) junctions in an equilibrium condition no net gravitational wave energy is emitted, on the other hand under …
We develop a theory of the conductance of superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junctions in the case where the superconducting order parameter has d-wave symmetry. At low temperature the conductance is proportional to the square root of the inelastic electron relaxation time in the bulk of the superconductor. As a result it turns out to be much larger than the conductance of the normal part of the junction.
We theoretically study the charge conductance in anomalous Rashba metal (ARM)/superconductor junctions for various types of the pairing symmetries in the superconductor. The exotic state dubbed ARM, where one of the spin resolved Fermi surface is absent, is realized when the chemical potential is tuned both in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and an exchange field. Although a fully polarized ferromagnet metal (FPFM) is also a system where the electron's spin degrees of a freedom is reduced to be half, the electrons in an ARM have distinct features from those in FPFM. For th…
Junction systems of odd-frequency (OF) superconductors are investigated based on a mean-field Hamiltonian formalism. One-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice (TCKL) is taken as a concrete example of OF superconductors. Properties of normal and Andreev reflections are examined in a normal metal/superconductor junction. Unlike conventional superconductors, normal reflection is always present due to the normal self energy that necessarily appears in the present OF pairing state. The conductance reflects the difference between repulsive and attractive potentials located at the interface, which is…
We propose the phase dynamics induced by spin waves in a superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (SC/FM/SC) Josephson junction. The resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model, which describes the dynamics of superconducting phase difference, is extended to include the spin wave excitation by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) using the gauge invariant phase difference between two s-wave superconductors. The current-voltage characteristics show step structures when the magnetization in FM is driven by tuning the microwave frequency to FMR in the SC/FM/SC junction. The result presents a new route to …
Within the framework of the microscopic model of tunneling, we modelled the behavior of the Josephson junction shunted by the Superconductor-Insulator-Normal metal (SIN) tunnel junction. We found that the electromagnetic impedance of the SIN junction yields both the frequency-dependent damping and dynamic reactance which leads to an increase in the effective capacitance of the circuit. We calculated the dc I-V curves and transient characteristics of these circuits and explained their quantitative differences to the curves obtained within the resistively shunted junction model. The correct oper…
Andreev reflection in ferromagnet-superconductor junctions is derived in a regime in which Zeeman splitting dominates the response of the superconductor to an applied magnetic field. Spin-up and spin-down Andreev reflections are shown to be resolved as voltage is increased. In the metallic limit, the transition from Andreev to tunnel conductivity in the spin-up channels has a non trivial behavior when spin polarization is increased. The conductance is asymmetric in a voltage reversal.
The tunneling spectrum of an electron and a hole in metal-superconductor-metal junctions is computed using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory. The incident and the outgoing currents finally balance each other by an interface charge inside the superconductor and metal junction. The present computation shows a more abundant structure compared to that on a metal-superconductor junction, such as the resonance at bias voltages above the energy gap of the superconductor. The density of the interface charge shows a quantum-like oscillation.
The current-phase relation (CPR) for asymmetric 45 degree Josephson junctions between two d-wave superconductors has been predicted to exhibit an anomalous periodicity. We have used the single-junction interferometer to investigate the CPR for this kind of junctions in YBCO thin films. Half-fluxon periodicity has been experimentally found, providing a novel source of evidence for the d-wave symmetry of the pairing state of the cuprates.
We construct a theory for low-energy quantum transport in normal$\mid$superconductor junctions involving the recently discovered iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. We properly take into account both Andreev bound surface states and the complex Fermi surface topology in our approach, and investigate the signatures of the possible order parameter symmetries for the FeAs-lattice. Our results could be helpful in determining the symmetry of the superconducting state in the iron-pnicitide superconductors.
We study large arrays of mesoscopic junctions between gapless superconductors where the tunneling processes of both, particle-hole and Cooper, pairs give rise to a strongly retarded effective action which, contrary to the standard case, can not be readily characterized in terms of a local Josephson energy. This complexity is expected to arise in, e.g., the grain boundary and c-axis junctions in layered high-T_c superconductors. A new representation for describing collective phenomena in this system is introduced, and its phase diagram is discussed, alongside the electrical conductivity.
Using the functional integral method, we construct a theory of heterotic SIS Josephson junctions between single- and two-gap superconductors. The theory predicts the presence of in-phase and out-of-phase collective oscillation modes of superconducting phases. The former corresponds to the Josephson plasma mode whose frequency is drastically reduced for $\pm$ s-wave symmetry, and the latter is a counterpart of Leggett's mode in Josephson junctions. We also reveal that the critical current and the Fraunhofer pattern strongly depend on the symmetry type of the two-gap superconductor.
A novel time-reversal symmetry breaking state is found theoretically in the Josephson junction between the two-gap superconductor and the conventional s-wave superconductor. This occurs due to the frustration between the three order parameters analogous to the two antiferromagnetically coupled XY-spins put under a magnetic field. This leads to the interface states with the energies inside the superconducting gap. Possible experimental observations of this state with broken time-reversal symmetry are discussed.
Superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions are known to exist in the $0$ and $π$ states with the transitions between them controlled by the temperature and ferromagnetic interlayer thickness. We demonstrate that these transitions can be controlled also by the external magnetic field directed perpendicular to the layers. By varying the ratio of diffusion coefficients in superconducting and ferromagnetic layers, these field-controlled transitions can be made detectable for arbitrary large value of the exchange energy in the ferromagnet. We also show that the $0$-$π$ transition…
We investigated transient optical responses in an optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.15) by using 800-nm optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy. With increasing the photoexcitation intensities, the Josephson plasma resonance shows a gradual redshift, indicating the suppression of superconductivity by the photoexcitation. With further increasing the photoexcitation intensities, a new longitudinal mode in the loss function spectrum appears and grows from the high energy side, accompanied by a new transverse mode as manifested in the conductivity spectrum. The observe…
We study a diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction in an environment with intrinsic incoherent fluctuations which couple to the junction through an electromagnetic field. When the temperature of the junction differs from that of the environment, this coupling leads to an energy transfer between the two systems, taking the junction out of equilibrium. We describe this effect in the linear response regime and show that the change in the supercurrent induced by this coupling leads to qualitative changes in the current-phase relation and for a certain range of parameters, an …
We consider a simple model of a multidomain superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) Josephson junction. Sign-alternating magnetization $M$ in domains leads to a spatial modulation of the phase difference $ϕ(x)$. Due to this modulation the Josephson critical current $I_{c}$ may have a different sign depending on the ratio of the magnetic flux in a domain, 4$πMa(2d_{F}),$ to the magnetic flux quantum. This phase modulation, but not a nonmonotonic dependence of the local critical current density $j_{c}$, may be the reason for oscillations of the current $I_{c}$ {\bf \}as a function of the…
We study the Josephson current, I_J, in a junction consisting of two s-wave superconductors that are separated by a ferromagnetic barrier possessing a magnetic and non-magnetic scattering potential, g and Z, respectively. We discuss the general dependence of I_J on g, Z, and the phase difference ϕbetween the two superconductors. Moreover, we compute the critical current, I_c for given g and Z, and show that it possesses two lines of non-analyticity in the (g, Z)-plane. We identify those regions in the (g, Z)-plane where the Josephson current changes sign with increasing temperature without a c…
