The X-ray spectra of accretion discs of eight stellar-mass black holes have been analyzed to date using the thermal continuum fitting method, and the spectral fits have been used to estimate the spin parameters of the black holes. However, the underlying model used in this method of estimating spin is the general relativistic thin-disc model of Novikov & Thorne, which is only valid for razor-thin discs. We therefore expect errors in the measured values of spin due to inadequacies in the theoretical model. We investigate this issue by computing spectra of numerically calculated models of thin accretion discs around black holes, obtained via three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. We apply the continuum fitting method to these computed spectra to estimate the black hole spins and check how closely the values match the actual spin used in the GRMHD simulations. We find that the error in the dimensionless spin parameter is up to about 0.2 for a non-spinning black hole, depending on the inclination. For black holes with spins of 0.7, 0.9 and 0.98, the errors are up to about 0.1, 0.03 and 0.01 respectively. These errors are comparable to or smaller than those arising from current levels of observational uncertainty. Furthermore, we estimate that the GRMHD simulated discs from which these error estimates are obtained correspond to effective disc luminosities of about 0.4-0.7 Eddington, and that the errors will be smaller for discs with luminosities of 0.3 Eddington or less, which are used in the continuum-fitting method. We thus conclude that use of the Novikov-Thorne thin-disc model does not presently limit the accuracy of the continuum-fitting method of measuring black hole spin.
We use the Novikov-Thorne thin disk model to fit the thermal continuum X-ray spectra of black hole X-ray binaries, and thereby extract the dimensionless spin parameter a* = a/M of the black hole as a parameter of the fit. We summarize the results obtained to date for six systems and describe work in progress on additional systems. We also describe recent methodological advances, our current efforts to make our analysis software fully available to others, and our theoretical efforts to validate the Novikov-Thorne model.
Recent general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of accretion onto black holes have shown that, contrary to the basic assumptions of the Novikov-Thorne model, there can be substantial magnetic stress throughout the plunging region. Additional dissipation and radiation can therefore be expected. We use data from a particularly well-resolved simulation of accretion onto a non-spinning black hole to compute both the radiative efficiency of such a flow and its spectrum if all emitted light is radiated with a thermal spectrum whose temperature matches the local effective temperatu…
We present an analytical solution for thin disk accretion onto a Kerr black hole that extends the standard Novikov-Thorne alpha-disk in three ways: (i) it incorporates nonzero stresses at the inner edge of the disk, (ii) it extends into the plunging region, and (iii) it uses a corrected vertical gravity formula. The free parameters of the model are unchanged. Nonzero boundary stresses are included by replacing the Novikov-Thorne no torque boundary condition with the less strict requirement that the fluid velocity at the innermost stable circular orbit is the sound speed, which numerical models…
Near-maximally spinning black holes display conformal symmetry in their near-horizon region, which is therefore the locus of critical phenomena. In this paper, we revisit the Novikov-Thorne accretion thin disk model and find a new self-similar radiation-dominated solution in the extremely high spin regime. Motivated by the self-consistency of the model, we require that matter flows at the sound speed at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We observe that, when the disk pressure is dominated by radiation at the ISCO, which occurs for the best-fitting Novikov-Thorne model of GRS 1915+105…
We study the half-light radius versus black hole mass as well as the luminosity versus black hole mass relations in active galactic nuclei (AGN) when the disc is illuminated by the X-ray corona. We used KYNSED, a recently developed spectral model for studying broadband spectral energy distribution in AGN. We considered non-illuminated Novikov-Thorne discs and X-ray illuminated discs based on a Novikov-Thorne temperature radial profile. We also considered the case where the temperature profile is modified by a colour-correction factor. We assumed that the X-ray luminosity is equal to the accret…
We present the results of a new series of global 3D relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of thin accretion disks around spinning black holes. The disks have aspect ratios of $H/R\sim 0.05$ and spin parameters $a/M=0, 0.5, 0.9$, and $0.99$. Using the ray-tracing code Pandurata, we generate broad-band thermal spectra and polarization signatures from the MHD simulations. We find that the simulated spectra can be well fit with a simple, universal emissivity profile that better reproduces the behavior of the emission from the inner disk, compared to traditional analyses carried out u…
We present a survey of how the spectral features of black hole X-ray binary systems depend on spin, accretion rate, viewing angle, and Fe abundance when predicted on the basis of first principles physical calculations. The power law component hardens with increasing spin. The thermal component strengthens with increasing accretion rate. The Compton bump is enhanced by higher accretion rate and lower spin. The Fe K$α$ equivalent width grows sub-linearly with Fe abundance. Strikingly, the K$α$ profile is more sensitive to accretion rate than to spin because its radial surface brightness profile …
We present NKBB, an XSPEC model for the thermal spectrum of thin accretion disks in parametric black hole spacetimes. We employ the Novikov-Thorne model for the description of the accretion disk and the formalism of the transfer function proposed by Cunningham for storing all the relativistic effects of the spacetime metric. The current version of the model assumes the Johannsen metric, but it can be easily extended to any stationary, axisymmetric, and asymptotically-flat spacetime without pathological properties. The model can be used within the XSPEC package to test the Kerr nature of astrop…
We discuss a parametrization to describe possible deviations from the Kerr metric and test astrophysical black hole candidates with electromagnetic radiation. Our metric is a very simple generalization of the Kerr solution with two main properties: $i)$ the phenomenology is quite rich and, for example, it can describe black holes with high Novikov-Thorne radiative efficiency or black holes of very small size; $ii)$ it is suitable for the numerical calculations required to study the spectrum of thin disks. The latter point is our principal motivation to study such a kind of parametrization, bec…
The thesis concerns the analysis of the Active Galactic Nuclei. These are galaxies with an active core. The most luminous type of Active Galactic Nuclei is Quasar. It contains the supermassive black hole at the center. One of the least known subtype of Quasars are: Weak emission-Line Quasars. Their recognizable feature are weak emission-lines. The primary goal of PhD thesis is to evaluate the global parameters such as: the black hole mass, the accretion rate, spin of the black hole, and the inclination of weak emission-line quasars based on the continuum fit method. This method apart from the …
X-ray reflection spectroscopy is currently one of the leading techniques for studying the inner part of accretion disks around black holes, measuring black hole spins, and even testing fundamental physics in strong gravitational fields. However, the accuracy of these measurements depends on the reflection models employed for the spectral analysis, which are sometimes questioned. In this work, we use a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) code to generate a thin accretion disk in Kerr spacetime and ray-tracing techniques to calculate its relativistically broadened reflection spectru…
Magnetic fields in an accretion disk around the central black hole can modify the position of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) radius and produces the difference for the classical Novikov-Thorne radius. We estimated the ISCO magnetic field strength on the base of polarimetric observations of the accretion disk radiation. This estimate can be obtained with taking into account the effect of Faraday rotation of the polarization plane at the length of the free path of photon between successive electron scattering events. In a result we presented the new method for real estimation of the …
Thermal reverberation in accretion discs of active galactic nuclei is thought to be the reason of the continuum UV/optical time lags seen in these sources. Recently, we studied thermal reverberation of a standard Novikov-Thorne accretion disc illuminated by an X-ray point-like source, and we derived an analytic prescription for the time lags as function of wavelength. In this work, we use this analytic function to fit the time-lags spectra of seven Seyferts, that have been intensively monitored, in many wave-bands, in the last few years. We find that thermal reverberation can explain the obser…
We studied optical-ultraviolet spectral energy distribution of 10 weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) which lie at redshifts z = 0.19 and 1.43 < z < 3.48. The theoretical models of their accretion disk continua are created based on the Novikov-Thorne equations. It allows us to estimate masses of their supermassive black holes (MBH) and accretion rates. We determined the virial factor for WLQs and note its anti-correlation with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of Hbeta emission-line (f propto FWHM^(alpha), alpha = (-1.34 +/- 0.37)). By comparison with the previously estimated BH masses, the …
The Novikov-Thorne model is the standard framework for the description of geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disks around black holes and is widely used to study the electromagnetic spectra of accreting black holes. One of the assumptions of the model is that the particles of the gas move on nearly-geodesic circular orbits on the equatorial plane. In this work, we propose to test the Keplerian velocity of the particles in the accretion disk using X-ray reflection spectroscopy. We present a modified version of RELXILL in which we introduce a phenomenological parameter, $α$, to qua…
Non-linear interaction between the electromagnetic fields (EMF) occurs when vacuum polarization in quantum electrodynamics (QED) happens. The field of non-linear electrodynamics, which may result from this interaction, could have important effects on black hole physics. This paper considers the asymptotically flat black hole solution in Einstein-nonlinear electrodynamics (NLE) fields. We study the effect of the NLE parameters on the black hole deflection angle using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in weak field limits, shadow cast using the null geodesics method, and thin accretion disk using the Nov…
We develop a new spectral model for the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This includes an outer standard disc, an inner warm Comptonising region to produce the soft X-ray excess and a hot corona. We tie these together energetically by assuming Novikov-Thorne emissivity, and use this to define a size scale for the hard X-ray corona as equal to the radius where the remaining accretion energy down to the black hole can power the observed X-ray emission. We test this on three AGN with well defined SEDs as well as on larger samples to show that the avera…
During its yearlong outburst in 1975--76, the transient source A0620--00 reached an intensity of 50 Crab, an all-time record for any X-ray binary. The source has been quiescent since. We recently determined accurate values for the black hole mass, orbital inclination angle and distance. Building on these results, we have measured the radius of the inner edge of the accretion disk around the black hole primary by fitting its thermal continuum spectrum to our version of the relativistic Novikov-Thorne thin-disk model. We have thereby estimated the spin of the black hole. Although our spin estima…
For general relativistic, inviscid, axisymmetric flow around Kerr black hole one may choose different flow thickness. The stationary flow equations can be solved using methods of dynamical system to get transonic accretion flows , i.e, flow infalling in the blackhole that turns supersonic from subsonic with decreasing radial distance, or vice versa. This transonic flows are obtained by choosing the particular flow passing through critical points of phase portrait. For certain flow thickness like the one maintaining conical shape, the sonic point coincide with the critical point. But there are …
The LIGO-Virgo collaboration reported in their third run the coalescence event GW190814 involving a 2.6 $M_{\odot}$ object with a 23 $M_{\odot}$ black hole. In this letter we study the conditions under which Thorne-$\dot{\textrm{Z}}$ytkow objects (T$\dot{\textrm{Z}}$Os) can be connected to that type of events. We evaluate first the rate of appearance of T$\dot{\textrm{Z}}$Os in the local Universe. Under the assumption that T$\dot{\textrm{Z}}$Os eventually become low mass gap black holes we evaluate how those black holes end up in binaries with other stellar mass black holes and compare to the …
A key component of explaining the array of galaxies observed in the Universe is the feedback of active galactic nuclei, each powered by a massive black hole's accretion disc. For accretion to occur, angular momentum must be lost by that which is accreted. Electromagnetic radiation must offer some respite in this regard, the contribution for which is quantified in this paper, using solely general relativity, under the thin-disc regime. Herein, I calculate extremised situations where photons are entirely responsible for energy removal in the disc and then extend and relate this to the standard r…
Newtonian simulations have demonstrated that accretion onto binary black holes produces accretion disks around each black hole ("minidisks"), fed by gas streams flowing through the circumbinary cavity from the surrounding circumbinary disk. We study the dynamics and radiation of an individual black hole minidisk using two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations performed with a new general relativistic version of the moving mesh code Disco. We introduce a co-moving energy variable which enables highly accurate integration of these high Mach number flows. Tidally induced spiral shock waves are e…
The radiative and jet efficiencies of thin magnetized accretion disks around black holes (BHs) are affected by BH spin and the presence of a magnetic field that, when strong, could lead to large deviations from Novikov-Thorne (NT) thin disk theory. To seek the maximum deviations, we perform general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of radiatively efficient thin (half-height $H$ to radius $R$ of $H/R\approx 0.10$) disks around moderately rotating BHs with $a/M=0.5$. First, our simulations, each evolved for more than $70,000r_g/c$ (gravitational radius $r_g$ and speed of light…
We develop a broadband spectral model, agnsli}, to describe super-Eddington black hole accretion disc spectra. This is based on the slim disc emissivity, where radial advection keeps the surface luminosity at the local Eddington limit, resulting in L(r)~ r^{-2} rather than the r^{-3} expected from the Novikov-Thorne (standard, sub-Eddington) disc emissivity. Wind losses should also be important but these are expected to produce a similar radiative emissivity. We assume that the flow is radially stratified, with an outer standard disc, an inner hot Comptonising region and an intermediate warm C…
The widely used Novikov-Thorne relativistic thin disc equations are only valid down to the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). This leads to an undetermined boundary condition at the ISCO, known as the inner stress of the disc, which sets the luminosity of the disc at the ISCO and introduces considerable ambiguity in accurately determining the mass, spin and accretion rate of black holes from observed spectra. We resolve this ambiguity by self-consistently extending the relativistic disc solution through the ISCO to the black hole horizon by calculating the inspiral of an ave…
We analytically determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies of a black hole with quadrupole moment in the eikonal limit using the light-ring method. The generalized black holes that are discussed in this work possess arbitrary quadrupole and higher mass moments in addition to mass and angular momentum. Static collapsed configurations with mass and quadrupole moment are treated in detail and the QNM frequencies associated with two such configurations are evaluated to linear order in the quadrupole moment. Furthermore, we touch upon the treatment of rotating systems. In particular, the gene…
String inspired models can serve as potential candidates to replace GR in the high energy regime where quantum gravity is expected to play a vital role. Such models not only subsume the ultraviolet nature of gravity but also exhibit promising prospects in resolving issues like dark matter and dark energy, which cannot be adequately addressed within the framework of GR. The Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion (EMDA) theory, which is central to this work is one such string inspired model arising in the low energy effective action of the heterotic string theory with interesting implications in inflati…
