We discuss three different globally regular non-topological stationary soliton solutions in the theory of a complex scalar field in 3+1 dimensions, so-called Q-balls, Q-vortices and Q-walls. The charge, energy and profiles of the corresponding solutions are presented for each configuration studied. The numerical investigation of these three types of solutions shows different behavior of charge and energy with changing frequency for each type. We investigate properties of new families of coupled non-topological 2-Q-ball solutions obtained within the same model by generalization of the ansatz for the scalar field which includes an independent phase. New composite solutions for another known model, which describes two Q-balls minimally interacting via a coupling term, are discussed briefly.
We investigate vortices on a cylinder in supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. We identify moduli space of periodic vortices and find that a pair of wall-like objects appears as the vortex moduli is varied. Usual domain walls also can be obtained from the single vortex on the cylinder by introducing a twisted boundary condition. We can understand these phenomena as a T-duality among D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. Using this T-duality picture, we find a one-to-one correspondence between the moduli space of non-Ab…
We study the structure and properties of vortices in a recently proposed Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons model in $2 +1 $ dimensions. The model which is described by gauge field interacting with a complex scalar field, includes two parity and time violating terms: the Chern-Simons and the anomalous magnetic terms. Self-dual relativistic vortices are discussed in detail. We also find one dimensional soliton solutions of the domain wall type. The vortices are correctly described by the domain wall solutions in the large flux limit.
We review recent results on the BPS multi-wall solutions in supersymmetric U(N_C) gauge theories in five dimensions with N_F(>N_C) hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. Total moduli space of the BPS non-Abelian walls is found to be the complex Grassmann manifold SU(N_F)/[SU(N_C)xSU(N_F-N_C)xU(1)]. Exact solutions are obtained with full generic moduli for infinite gauge coupling. A 1/4 BPS equation is also solved, giving vortices together with the non-Abelian walls and monopoles in the Higgs phase attached to the vortices. The full moduli space of the 1/4 BPS solutions is found to …
We study BPS saturated objects with axial geometry (wall junctions, vortices) in generalized Wess-Zumino models. It is observed that the tension of such objects is negative in general (although ``exceptional'' models are possible). We show how an ambiguity in the definition of central charges does not affect physical quantities, and we comment on the stability of the junctions and vortices. We illustrate these issues in two classes of models with Z_N symmetry. On the basis of analytical large N calculations and numerical calculations at finite N, we argue that the domain wall junctions in thes…
We review recent results on solitons in supersymmetric (SUSY) non-Abelian gauge theories, focusing on our papers: hep-th/0405194, hep-th/0405129, and hep-th/0404198. We construct the BPS multi-wall solutions in supersymmetric U(N_C) gauge theories in five dimensions with N_F(>N_C) hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. Exact solutions are obtained with full generic moduli for infinite gauge coupling. Total moduli space of the BPS non-Abelian walls is found to be the complex Grassmann manifold SU(N_F) / [SU(N_C)\times SU(N_F-N_C) \times U(1)]. A 1/4 BPS equation is also studied whic…
We investigate the vortex-type BPS equations in the ABJM theory without and with mass-deformation. We systematically classify the BPS equations in terms of the number of supersymmetry and the R-symmetries of the undeformed and mass-deformed ABJM theories. For the undeformed case, we analyze the ${\cal N}=2$ BPS equations for U(2)$\times$U(2) gauge symmetry and obtain a coupled differential equation which can be reduced to either Liouville- or Sinh-Gordon-type vortex equations according to the choice of scalar functions. For the mass-deformed case with U($N$)$\times$U($N$) gauge symmetry, we ob…
We study 1/2 BPS domain walls, 1/2 BPS flux tubes (strings) and their 1/4 BPS junctions. We consider the simplest example of N=2 Abelian gauge theory with two charged matter hypermultiplets which contains all of the above-listed extended objects. In particular, we focus on string-wall junctions (boojums) and calculate their energy. It turns out to be logarithmically divergent in the infrared domain. We compute this energy first in the (2+1)-dimensional effective theory on the domain wall and then, as a check, obtain the same result from the point of view of (3+1)-dimensional bulk theory. Next,…
Non-abelian gauge theories in the Higgs phase admit a startling variety of BPS solitons. These include domain walls, vortex strings, confined monopoles threaded on vortex strings, vortex strings ending on domain walls, monopoles threaded on strings ending on domain walls, and more. After presenting a self-contained review of these objects, including several new results on the dynamics of domain walls, we go on to examine the possible interactions of solitons of various types. We point out the existence of a classical binding energy when the string ends on the domain wall which can be thought o…
We study domain walls and vortices in chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like theory with N flavors in the chiral limit. If the axial anomaly is absent, there exist stable Abelian axial vortices winding around the spontaneously broken U(1)_A symmetry and non-Abelian axial vortices winding around both the U(1)_A and non-Abelian SU(N) chiral symmetries. In the presence of the axial anomaly term, metastable domain walls are present and Abelian axial vortices must be attached by N domain walls, forming domain wall junctions. We show that a domain wall junction decays into N non-Abelian vortices att…
We study the chiral effective theory in the presence of QCD vortices. Gauge invariance requires novel terms from vortex singularities in the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action, which incorporate anomaly induced currents along the vortices. We examine these terms for systems with QCD axial domain-walls bounded by vortices (vortons) under magnetic fields. We discuss how the baryon and the electric charge conservations are satisfied in these systems through interplay between domain-walls and vortices, which manifests Callan-Harvey's mechanism of the anomaly inflow.
We explore 1d vortex dynamics of 3d supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories, as inferred from factorization of exact partition functions. Under Seiberg-like dualities, the 3d partition function must remain invariant, yet it is not a priori clear what should happen to the vortex dynamics. We observe that the 1d quivers for the vortices remain the same, and the net effect of the 3d duality map manifests as 1d Wall-Crossing phenomenon; Although the vortex number can shift along such duality maps, the ranks of the 1d quiver theory are unaffected, leading to a notion of fundamental vortices as basic bui…
We study the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen multi-vortices. Using a numerical code we are able to solve the vortex equations with winding number up to n=25,000. We can thus check the wall vortex conjecture previously made in hep-th/0507273 and hep-th/0507286. The numerical results show a remarkable agreement with the theoretical predictions.
We provide a simple explanation of complex magnetic patterns observed in ferromagnetic nanostructures. To this end we identify elementary topological defects in the field of magnetization: ordinary vortices in the bulk and vortices with half-integer winding numbers confined to the edge. Domain walls found in experiments and numerical simulations in strips and rings are composite objects containing two or more of the elementary defects.
We study $Q$-ball type solitons in arbitrary spatial dimensions in the setting recently described by Kusenko, where the scalar field potential has a flat direction which rises much slower than $ϕ^2$. We find that the general formula for energy as a function of the charge is, $E_d\sim Q_d^{(d/d+1)}$ in spatial dimension $d$. We show that the Hamiltonian governing the stability analysis of certain $Q$-wall configurations, which are one dimensional $Q$-ball solutions extended to planar, wall-like configurations in three dimensions, can be related to supersymmetric quantum mechanics. $Q$-wall and …
We study BPS solitons in N=6 U(N) \times U(N) Chern-Simons-matter theory deformed by an F-term mass. The F-term mass generically breaks N=6 supersymmetry down to N=2. At vacua, M2-branes are polarized into a fuzzy S^3 forming a spherical M5-brane with topology \mathbf{R}^{1,2} \times S^3. The polarization is interpreted as Myers' dielectric effect caused by an anti-self-dual 4-form flux T_4 in the eleven-dimensional supergravity. Assuming a polarized M2-brane configuration, the model effectively reduces to the well-known abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs model studied in detail by Jackiw-Lee-Weinberg…
We propose a novel and simple method to compute the partition function of statistical mechanics of local and semi-local BPS vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model and its non-Abelian extension on a torus. We use a D-brane realization of the vortices and T-duality relation to domain walls. We there use a special limit where domain walls reduce to gas of hard (soft) one-dimensional rods for Abelian (non-Abelian) cases. In the simpler cases of the Abelian-Higgs model on a torus, our results agree with exact results which are geometrically derived by an explicit integration over the moduli space of v…
We review our recent works on solitons in U(Nc) gauge theories with Nf (>Nc) Higgs fields in the fundamental representation, which possess eight supercharges. The moduli matrix is proposed as a crucial tool to exhaust all BPS solutions, and to characterize all possible moduli parameters. Since vacua are in the Higgs phase, we find domain walls (kinks) and vortices as the only elementary solitons. Stable monopoles and instantons can exist as composite solitons with vortices attached. Webs of walls are also found as another composite soliton. The moduli space of all these elementary as well as c…
Volume of moduli space of non-Abelian BPS domain-walls is exactly obtained in U(N_c) gauge theory with N_f matters. The volume of the moduli space is formulated, without an explicit metric, by a path integral under constraints on BPS equations. The path integral over fields reduces to a finite dimensional contour integral by a localization mechanism. Our volume formula satisfies a Seiberg like duality between moduli spaces of the U(N_c) and U(N_f-N_c) non-Abelian BPS domain-walls in a strong coupling region. We also find a T-duality between domain-walls and vortices on a cylinder. The moduli s…
Multi-layered Josephson junctions are modeled in the context of a field theory, and dynamics of Josephson vortices trapped inside insulators are studied. Starting from a theory consisting of complex and real scalar fields coupled to a U(1) gauge field which admit parallel $N-1$ domain-wall solutions, Josephson couplings are introduced weakly between the complex scalar fields. The $N-1$ domain walls behave as insulators separating $N$ superconductors, where one of the complex scalar fields has a gap. We construct the effective Lagrangian on the domain walls, which reduces to a coupled sine-Gord…
We propose a mechanism to create a vorton or three-dimensional skyrmion in phase-separated two-component BECs with the order parameters Psi_1 and Psi_2 of the two condensates. We consider a pair of a domain wall (brane) and an anti-domain wall (anti-brane) stretched by vortices (strings), where the Psi_2 component with a vortex winding is sandwiched by two domains of the Psi_1 component. The vortons appear when the domain wall pair annihilates. Experimentally, this can be realized by preparing the phase separation in the order Psi_1, Psi_2 and Psi_1 components, where the nodal plane of a dark …
Complex scalar fields charged under a global U(1) symmetry can admit non-topological soliton configurations called Q-balls which are stable against decay into individual particles or smaller Q-balls. These Q-balls are interesting objects within quantum field theory, but are also of phenomenological interest in several cosmological and astrophysical contexts. The Q-ball profiles are determined by a nonlinear differential equation, and so generally require solution by numerical methods. In this work, we derive analytical approximations for the Q-ball profile in a polynomial potential and obtain …
In the present paper, we continue to study the two-dimensional soliton system that is composed of vortex and Q-ball components interacting with each other through an Abelian gauge field. This vortex-Q-ball system is electrically neutral as a whole, nevertheless it possesses a nonzero electric field. Moreover, the vortex-Q-ball system has a quantized magnetic flux and a nonzero angular momentum, and combines properties of topological and nontopological solitons. We investigate radially and azimuthally excited states of the vortex-Q-ball system along with the unexcited vortex-Q-ball system at di…
Domain wall networks on the surface of a soliton are studied in a simple theory. It consists of two complex scalar fields, in (3+1)-dimensions, with a global U(1) x Z_n symmetry, where n>2. Solutions are computed numerically in which one of the fields forms a Q-ball and the other field forms a network of domain walls localized on the surface of the Q-ball. Examples are presented in which the domain walls lie along the edges of a spherical polyhedron, forming junctions at its vertices. It is explained why only a small restricted class of polyhedra can arise as domain wall networks.
We study non-topological, charged planar walls (Q-walls) in the context of a particle physics model with supersymmetry broken by low-energy gauge mediation. Analytical properties are derived within the flat-potential approximation for the flat-direction raising potential, while a numerical study is performed using the full two-loop supersymmetric potential. We analyze the energetics of finite-size Q-walls and compare them to Q-balls, non-topological solitons possessing spherical symmetry and arising in the same supersymmetric model. This allow us to draw a phase diagram in the charge-transvers…
We show that sine-Gordon solitons appear in the low-energy effective theory of a domain wall in a U(1) gauge theory with two charged complex scalar fields with masses, if we introduce the Josephson interaction term between the scalar fields. We identify these sine-Gordon solitons as vortices or CP(1) sigma model instantons in the bulk, which are absorbed into the domain wall world-volume. These vortices can be called as Josephson vortices since they appear in Josephson junctions of two superconductors. This set up gives a physical realization of a lower dimensional analogue of Atiyah-Manton co…
A Josephson junction is made of two superconductors sandwiching an insulator, and a Josephson vortex is a magnetic vortex (flux tube) absorbed into the Josephson junction, whose dynamics can be described by the sine-Gordon equation. In a field theory framework, a flexible Josephson junction was proposed, in which the Josephson junction is represented by a domain wall separating two condensations and a Josephson vortex is a sine-Gordon soliton in the domain wall effective theory. In this paper, we propose a Josephson junction of non-Abelian color superconductors, that is described by a non-Abel…
We discuss 1/2 BPS domain walls in the 3d $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric gauge theory which is self-dual under the 3d mirror symmetry. We find that if a BF-type coupling is introduced, invariance of the BPS domain wall under the duality transformation can be explicitly seen from the classical BPS equations. It has been known that particles and vortices are swapped under the 3d duality transformations. We show that Noether charges and vortex topological charges localized on the domain walls are correctly exchanged under the 3d mirror symmetry.
We theoretically study the vortex formation from the collision of the domain walls in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. The collision process mimics the tachyon condensation for the annihilation of D-brane and anti-D-brane in string theory. A pair annihilation leaves the quantized vortices with superflow along their core, namely `superflowing cosmic strings'. It is revealed that the line density and the core size of the vortices depend on the initial distance between the walls.
We find chiral non-Abelian vortices having windings only in one of the diquark condensations of left-handed and right-handed quarks in the color-flavor locked phase of dense QCD. They are the minimum vortices carrying half color magnetic fluxes of those of non-Abelian semi-superfluid vortices (color magnetic flux tubes) and 1/6 quantized superfluid circulations of Abelian superfluid vortices. These vortices carry ${\mathbb C}P^2$ orientational moduli in the internal space corresponding to their fluxes. The ${\mathbb C}P^2$ moduli of two chiral non-Abelian vortices with chiralities opposite to …
Theories possessing non-canonical kinetic terms are often studied for Q-ball states in an ad-hoc manner. This paper seeks to generalise their study for both thin- and thick-wall Q-balls. Specifically, we show that theories whose potential cannot house Q-balls can do so by virtue of their non-canonical kinetic terms. Furthermore, we also constrain the theories that possess an energetically stable thick-wall limit, with ramifications for their early universe phenomenology.
N=2 SQED with several flavors admits multiple, static BPS domain wall solutions. We determine the explicit two-kink metric and examine the dynamics of colliding domain walls. The multi-kink metric has a toric Kahler structure and we reduce the Kahler potential to quadrature. In the second part of this paper, we consider semi-local vortices compactified on circle. We argue that, in the presence of a suitable Wilson line, the vortices separate into domain wall constituents. These play the role of fractional instantons in two-dimensional gauge theories and sigma-models.
We review our recent work on solitons in the Higgs phase. We use U(N_C) gauge theory with N_F Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation, which can be extended to possess eight supercharges. We propose the moduli matrix as a fundamental tool to exhaust all BPS solutions, and to characterize all possible moduli parameters. Moduli spaces of domain walls (kinks) and vortices, which are the only elementary solitons in the Higgs phase, are found in terms of the moduli matrix. Stable monopoles and instantons can exist in the Higgs phase if they are attached by vortices to form composite s…
Fermi Ball is a kind of nontopological soliton with fermions trapped in its domain wall, and is suggested to arises from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the approximate $Z_2$ symmetry in the early universe. We find that the neutral thin-wall Fermi Ball is stable in the limited region of the scalar self-coupling constant $λ$ and the Yukawa coupling constant $G$. We find that the Fermi Ball is stabilized due to the curvature effect of the domain wall caused by the fermion sector. We also discuss whether such stable Fermi Balls may contribute to the cold dark matter.
We present a discussion of embedded vortices in general Yang-Mills theories. The origin of a family structure of solutions is shown to be group theoretic in nature and a procedure for its determination is developed. Vortex stability can be quantified into three types: Abelian topological stability, non-Abelian topological stability, and dynamical stability; we relate these to the family structure of vortices, in particular discussing how Abelian topological and dynamical stability are related. The formalism generally encompasses embedded domain walls and embedded monopoles also.
Multi-field Q-balls, in which some, but not all, of the constituent fields are real scalars, are studied. Uncharged fields may classically contribute to Q-balls provided that their effect is to not destabilise the resulting object. The thin-wall limit is reviewed based on existing literature. Sufficient conditions for the theories that can plausibly contain thick-wall solutions are derived. Necessary conditions require a detailed numerical analysis, outside the scope of this work. These conditions show that when the additional real scalars are massive, a minimum charge must accumulate in order…
We study the classical and absolute stability of Q-balls in scalar field theories with flat potentials arising in both gravity-mediated and gauge-mediated models. We show that the associated Q-matter formed in gravity-mediated potentials can be stable against decay into their own free particles as long as the coupling constant of the nonrenormalisable term is small, and that all of the possible three-dimensional Q-ball configurations are classically stable against linear fluctuations. Three-dimensional gauge-mediated Q-balls can be absolutely stable in the "thin-wall-like" limit, but are compl…
We find a novel confinement mechanism in the two-flavor dense quark matter proposed recently, that consists of the 2SC condensates and the $P$-wave diquark condensates of $d$-quarks. This quark matter exhibiting color superconductivity as well as superfluidity is classified into two phases; confined and deconfined phases of vortices. We establish that the criterion of the confinement is color neutrality of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phases: vortices exhibiting color non-singlet AB phases are confined by the so-called AB defects to form color-singlet bound states. In the deconfined phase, the most stab…
We study topological defects in the Georgi-Machacek model in a hierarchical symmetry breaking in which extra triplets acquire vacuum expectation values before the doublet. We find a possibility of topologically stable non-Abelian domain walls and non-Abelian flux tubes (vortices) in this model. In the limit of the vanishing $U(1)_{\rm Y}$ gauge coupling in which the custodial symmetry becomes exact, the presence of a vortex spontaneously breaks the custodial symmetry, giving rise to $S^2$ Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes localized around the vortex corresponding to non-Abelian fluxes. Vortices are c…
We show that when a topological defect with extended world-volume annihilates with an anti-defect, there arise topological defects with dimensions less than those of the original defects by one. Domain wall annihilations create vortices while monopole-string annihilations result in instantons. We find that twisted domain wall rings are vortices, whereas twisted monopole rings are instantons.
We consider a scalar field model with a self-interaction potential that possesses a discrete vacuum manifold. We point out that this model allows for both topological as well as non-topological solitons. In (1+1) dimensions both type of solutions have finite energy, while in (3+1) dimensions, the topological solitons have finite energy per unit area only and correspond to domain walls. Non-topological solitons with finite energy do exist in (3+1) dimensions due to a non-trivial phase of the scalar field and an associated U(1) symmetry of the model, though. We construct these so-called Q-ball s…
Euclidean d=3 SU(2) Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons (YMCS) theory, including Georgi-Glashow (GGCS) theory, may have solitons in the presence of appropriate mass terms. For integral CS level k and for solitons carrying integral CS number, YMCS is gauge-invariant and consistent. However, individual solitons such as sphalerons and linked center vortices with CS number of 1/2 and writhing center vortices with arbitrary CS number are non-compact; a condensate of them threatens compactness of the theory. We study various forms of the non-compact theory in the dilute-gas approximation, treating the parameter…
We study cosmological formation of D-term strings, axionic strings, domain walls and Q-balls in braneworld models of the Hanany-Witten type. For the D-term strings, we show that the strings are the daughter branes extended between mother branes. We show that the domain walls can be produced by conventional cosmological phase transitions. In this case, the formation of the domain walls is induced by the continuous deformation of the branes, which means that they are not created as daughter branes. First we consider classical configurations of the axionic strings and the domain walls, then we in…
We develop an adequate description of non-topological solitons with a small charge, for which the thin-wall approximation is not valid. There is no classical lower limit on the charge of a stable Q-ball. We examine the parameters of these small-charge solitons and discuss the limits of applicability of the semiclassical approximation.
A simple model is presented where the disappearance of domain walls and the associated production of ``Fermi balls'', which have been proposed as candidates for cold dark matter, are features which arise rather naturally in response to softly broken supersymmetry.
We construct a bound state of three 1/3-quantized Josephson coupled vortices in three-component superconductors with intrinsic Josephson couplings, which may be relevant with regard to iron-based superconductors. We find a Y-shaped junction of three domain walls connecting the three vortices, resembling the baryonic bound state of three quarks in QCD. The appearance of the Y-junction (but not a Delta-junction) implies that in both cases of superconductors and QCD, the bound state is described by a genuine three-body interaction (but not by the sum of two-body interactions). We also discuss a c…
