Quantum Field Theory and Gravity (Regensburg, 2010), 2012, pp. 137-156
We develop a notion of quantum observable for the general boundary formulation of quantum theory. This notion is adapted to spacetime regions rather than to hypersurfaces and naturally fits into the topological quantum field theory like axiomatic structure of the general boundary formulation. We also provide a proposal for a generalized concept of expectation value adapted to this type of observable. We show how the standard notion of quantum observable arises as a special case together with the usual expectation values. We proceed to introduce various quantization schemes to obtain such quantum observables including path integral quantization (yielding the time-ordered product), Berezin-Toeplitz (antinormal ordered) quantization and normal ordered quantization, and discuss some of their properties.
We give an introductory account of the general boundary formulation of quantum theory. We refine its probability interpretation and emphasize a conceptual and historical perspective. We give motivations from quantum gravity and illustrate them with a scenario for describing gravitons in quantum gravity.
We introduce a new "positive formalism" for encoding quantum theories in the general boundary formulation, somewhat analogous to the mixed state formalism of the standard formulation. This makes the probability interpretation more natural and elegant, eliminates operationally irrelevant structure and opens the general boundary formulation to quantum information theory.
We propose a new systematic fibre bundle formulation of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The new form of the theory is equivalent to the usual one but it is in harmony with the modern trends in theoretical physics and potentially admits new generalizations in different directions. In it a pure state of some quantum system is described by a state section (along paths) of a (Hilbert) fibre bundle. Its evolution is determined through the bundle (analogue of the) Schrödinger equation. Now the dynamical variables and the density operator are described via bundle morphisms (along paths). The menti…
Change and local spatial variation are missing in canonical General Relativity's observables as usually defined, part of the problem of time. Definitions can be tested using equivalent formulations, non-gauge and gauge, because they must have equivalent observables and everything is observable in the non-gauge formulation. Taking an observable from the non-gauge formulation and finding the equivalent in the gauge formulation, one requires that the equivalent be an observable, constraining definitions. For massive photons, the de Broglie-Proca non-gauge formulation observable A_μ is equivalent …
I propose to formalize quantum theories as topological quantum field theories in a generalized sense, associating state spaces with boundaries of arbitrary (and possibly finite) regions of space-time. I further propose to obtain such ``general boundary'' quantum theories through a generalized path integral quantization. I show how both, non-relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory can be given a ``general boundary'' formulation. Surprisingly, even in the non-relativistic case, features normally associated with quantum field theory emerge from consistency conditions. This include…
Observables of topological Yang-Mills theory were defined by Witten as the classes of an equivariant cohomology. We propose to define them alternatively as the BRST cohomology classes of a superspace version of the theory, where BRST invariance is associated to super Yang-Mills invariance. We provide and discuss the general solution of this cohomology.
It has been argued that holography in gravitational theories is related to the existence of a particularly useful Gauss Law that allows energy to be measured at the boundary. The present work investigates the extent to which such Gauss Laws follow from diffeomorphism invariance. We study parametrized field theories, which are a class of diffeomorphism-invariant theories without gravity. We find that the Hamiltonian for parametrized field theories vanishes on shell even in the presence of a boundary and under a variety of boundary conditions. We conclude that parametrized theories have no usefu…
In this work we construct holographic boundary theories for linearized 3D gravity, for a general family of finite or quasi-local boundaries. These boundary theories are directly derived from the dynamics of 3D gravity by computing the effective action for a geometric boundary observable, which measures the geodesic length from a given boundary point to some centre in the bulk manifold. We identify the general form for these boundary theories and find that these are Liouville like with a coupling to the boundary Ricci scalar. This is illustrated with various examples, which each offer interesti…
We explore further the suggestion to describe a pre- and post-selected system by a two-state, which is determined by two conditions. Starting with a formal definition of a two-state Hilbert space and basic operations, we systematically recast the basics of quantum mechanics - dynamics, observables, and measurement theory - in terms of two-states as the elementary quantities. We find a simple and suggestive formulation, that ``unifies'' two complementary observables: probabilistic observables and non-probabilistic `weak' observables. Probabilities are relevant for measurements in the `strong co…
We show that the Feynman path integral together with the Schrödinger representation gives rise to a rigorous and functorial quantization scheme for linear and affine field theories. Since our target framework is the general boundary formulation, the class of field theories that can be quantized in this way includes theories without a metric spacetime background. We also show that this quantization scheme is equivalent to a holomorphic quantization scheme proposed earlier and based on geometric quantization. We proceed to include observables into the scheme, quantized also through the path inte…
This paper explores construction of gauge (diffeomorphism)-invariant observables in anti de Sitter (AdS) space and the related question of how to find a "holographic map" providing a quantum equivalence to a boundary theory. Observables are constructed perturbatively to leading order in the gravitational coupling by gravitationally dressing local field theory operators in order to solve the gravitational constraints. Many such dressings are allowed and two are explicitly examined, corresponding to a gravitational line and to a Coulomb field; these also reveal an apparent role for more general …
We construct a new type of S-matrix in quantum field theory using the general boundary formulation. In contrast to the usual S-matrix the space of free asymptotic states is located at spatial rather than at temporal infinity. Hence, the new S-matrix applies to situations where interactions may remain important at all times, but become negligible with distance. We show that the new S-matrix is equivalent to the usual one in situations where both apply. This equivalence is mediated by an isomorphism between the respective asymptotic state spaces that we construct. We introduce coherent states th…
We propose a Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formulation of boundary superstring field theory. The superstring field action is defined in terms of a closed one-form in the space of couplings, and we compute it explicitly for exactly solvable tachyon perturbations. We also argue that the superstring field action defined in this way is the partition function on the disc, in accord with a previous proposal.
In this note I discuss some aspects of a formulation of quantum mechanics based entirely on the Jordan algebra of observables. After reviewing some facts of the formulation in the \CS -approach I present a Jordan-algebraic Hilbert space construction (inspired by the usual GNS-construction), thereby obtaining a real Hilbert space and a (Jordan-) representation of the algebra of observables on this space. Taking the usual case as a guideline I subsequently derive a Schrödinger equation on this Hilbert space.
We show that ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with a cosmological constant can be expressed as constrained topological field theory based on the supergroup $Osp(1|4)$. The theory is then extended to include timelike boundaries with finite spatial area. Consistent boundary conditions are found which induce a boundary theory based on a supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory. The boundary state space is constructed from states of the boundary supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory on the punctured two sphere and naturally satisfies the Bekenstein bound, where area is measured by the area operator of quantum sup…

We present a rigorous quantization scheme that yields a quantum field theory in general boundary form starting from a linear field theory. Following a geometric quantization approach in the Kähler case, state spaces arise as spaces of holomorphic functions on linear spaces of classical solutions in neighborhoods of hypersurfaces. Amplitudes arise as integrals of such functions over spaces of classical solutions in regions of spacetime. We prove the validity of the TQFT-type axioms of the general boundary formulation under reasonable assumptions. We also develop the notions of vacuum and cohere…
We study a coupled system that describes the interacting dynamics between a bulk field, confined to a finite region with timelike boundary, and a boundary observable. In our system the dynamics of the boundary observable prescribes dynamical boundary conditions for the bulk field. We cast our classical system in the form of an abstract linear Klein-Gordon equation, in an enlarged Hilbert space for the bulk field and the boundary observable. This makes it possible to apply to our coupled system the general methods of quantization. In particular, we implement the Fock quantization in full detail…
The boundary conditions on multiply connected extra dimensions play major rolls in gauge-Higgs unification theory. Different boundary conditions, having been given in ad hoc manner so far, lead to different theories. To solve this arbitrariness problem of boundary conditions, we construct a formulation of gauge-Higgs unification with dynamics of boundary conditions on M^4 times S^1/Z_2. As a result, it is found that only highly restricted sets of boundary conditions, which lead to nontrivial symmetry breaking, practically contribute to the partition function. In particular, we show that for $S…
A 4-dimensional heterotic string model of free fermionic construction is presented wherein mirror symmetry breaking between observable and hidden sector gauge groups occurs in spite of mirror symmetry between observable and hidden sector worldsheet fermion boundary conditions. The differentiation is invoked by an asymmetry in GSO projections necessarily resulting from the symmetry of the free fermionic boundary conditions. In the specific examples shown, an expected non-chiral Pati-Salam mirror universe model is transformed into a chiral model with enhanced hidden sector gauge symmetry and red…
We study a model of resonant point-contact tunneling of a single Luttinger-liquid lead, using the boundary state formulation. The model is described by a single chiral Fermion in one dimensional space with one point contact interaction at the origin. It is the simplest model of this type. By folding the infinite line we map the model onto a non-chiral model on the half infinite line and transcribe the point-contact tunneling interaction into a boundary interaction. The tunneling interaction yields a non-local effective action at the boundary. We explicitly construct the boundary state and eval…
The mathematical formalism necessary for the diagramatic evaluation of quantum corrections to a conformally invariant field theory for a self-interacting scalar field on a curved manifold with boundary is considered. The evaluation of quantum corrections to the effective action past one-loop necessitates diagramatic techniques. Diagramatic evaluations and higher loop-order renormalisation can be best accomplished on a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature accommodating a boundary of constant extrinsic curvature. In such a context the stated evaluations can be accomplished through a consist…
We propose a version of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics in which the pure states of a quantum system are described as sections of a Hilbert (generally infinitely-dimensional) fibre bundle over the space-time. There evolution is governed via (a kind of) a parallel transport in this bundle. Some problems concerning observables are considered. There are derived the equations of motion for the state sections and observables. We show that up to a constant the matrix of the coefficients of the evolution operator (transport) coincides with the matrix of the Hamiltonian of the investigated quan…
A manifestly covariant formulation of quantum field Maslov complex-WKB theory (semiclassical field theory) is investigated for the case of scalar field. The main object of the theory is "semiclassical bundle". Its base is the set of all classical states, fibers are Hilbert spaces of quantum states in the external field. Semiclassical Maslov states may be viewed as points or surfaces on the semiclassical bundle. Semiclassical analogs of QFT axioms are formulated. A relationship between covariant semiclassical field theory and Hamiltonian formulation is discussed. The constructions of axiomatic …
We study a model of resonant multilead point-contact tunneling by using the boundary state formulation. At a critical point the model is described by multi-flavor chiral fermions on an infinite line with a point contact interaction at the origin. By applying the folding procedure, previously developed for the model of resonant point-contact tunneling of a single lead, we map the model onto a non-chiral fermion model defined on the half line. The resonant point-contact tunneling interaction is transcribed into a non-local effective boundary interaction in the folded setup, where the boundary st…
We present a novel finite-matrix formulation of gauge theories on a non-commutative torus. Unlike the previous formulation based on a map from a square matrix to a field on a discretized torus with periodic boundary conditions, our formulation is based on the algebraic characterization of the configuration space. This enables us to describe the twisted boundary conditions in terms of finite matrices and hence to realize the Morita equivalence at a fully regularized level. Matter fields in the fundamental representation turn out to be represented by rectangular matrices for twisted boundary con…
Observable currents are locally defined gauge invariant conserved currents; physical observables may be calculated integrating them on appropriate hypersurfaces. Due to the conservation law the hypersurfaces become irrelevant up to homology, and the main objects of interest become the observable currents them selves. Gauge inequivalent solutions can be distinguished by means of observable currents. With the aim of modeling spacetime local physics, we work on spacetime domains $U\subset M$ which may have boundaries and corners. Hamiltonian observable currents are those satisfying ${\sf d_v}F=-ι…
This work concerns some issues about the interplay of standard and geometric (Hamiltonian) approaches to finite-dimensional quantum mechanics, formulated in the projective space. Our analysis relies upon the notion and the properties of so-called frame functions, introduced by A.M. Gleason to prove his celebrated theorem. In particular, the problem of associating quantum state with positive Liouville densities is tackled from an axiomatic point of view, proving a theorem classifying all possible correspondences. A similar result is established for classical observables representing quantum one…
We reformulate bosonic boundary string field theory in terms of boundary state. In our formulation, we can formally perform the integration of target space equations of motion for arbitrary field configurations without assuming decoupling of matter and ghost. Thus, we obtain the general form of the action of bosonic boundary string field theory. This formulation may help us to understand possible interactions between boundary string field theory and the closed string sector.
We develop a Coulomb gas formalism for boundary conformal field theory having a $W$ symmetry and illustrate its operation using the three state Potts model. We find that there are free-field representations for six $W$ conserving boundary states, which yield the fixed and mixed physical boundary conditions, and two $W$ violating boundary states which yield the free and new boundary conditions. Other $W$ violating boundary states can be constructed but they decouple from the rest of the theory. Thus we have a complete free-field realization of the known boundary states of the three state Potts …
We review the definition of hypergroups by Sunder, and we associate a hypergroup to a type III subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index, whose canonical endomorphism $γ\in\mathrm{End}(M)$ is multiplicity-free. It is realized by positive maps of $M$ that have $N$ as fixed points. If the depth is $>2$, this hypergroup is different from the hypergroup associated with the fusion algebra of $M$-$M$ bimodules that was Sunder's original motivation to introduce hypergroups. We explain how the present hypergroup, associated with a suitable subfactor, controls the composition of transparent boundary condi…
It is by now well established that divergences of the on-shell action for asymptotically AdS solutions can be cancelled by adding covariant local boundary counterterms to the action. Here we show that although one can still renormalise the action for asymptotically $AdS_p \times S^q$ solutions using local boundary counterterms the counterterm action is not covariant since the conformal boundary is degenerate. Any given counterterm action is defined with respect to specific coordinate frame and gauge choices.
We discuss the quantization of linearized gravity on globally hyperbolic, asymptotically flat, vacuum spacetimes and the construction of distinguished states which are both of Hadamard form and invariant under the action of all bulk isometries. The procedure, we follow, consists of looking for a realization of the observables of the theory as a sub-algebra of an auxiliary, non-dynamical algebra constructed on future null infinity $\Im^+$. The applicability of this scheme is tantamount to proving that a solution of the equations of motion for linearized gravity can be extended smoothly to $\Im^…
Vasiliev equations facilitate globally defined formulations of higher-spin gravity in various correspondence spaces associated with different phases of the theory. In the four-dimensional case this induces a map from a generally covariant formulation in spacetime with higher-derivative interactions to a formulation in terms of a deformed symplectic structure on a noncommutative doubled twistor space, sending spacetime boundary conditions to various sectors of an associative star-product algebra. We look at observables given by integrals over twistor space defining composite zero-forms in space…
We first derive the boundary theory from the U(1) Chern-Simons theory. The boundary action on an $n$-sheet manifold appears from its back-reaction of the Wilson line. The reason is that the U(1) Chern-Simons theory can provide an exact effective action when introducing the Wilson line. The Wilson line in the pure AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity is equivalent to entanglement entropy in the boundary theory up to classical gravity. The U(1) Chern-Simons theory deviates by a self-interaction term from the gauge formulation on the boundary. We also compare the Hayward term in the SL(2) Chern-Simons formul…
Scalar BMS-invariant QFT defined on the causal boundary $\scri$ of an asymptotically flat spacetime is discussed. (a)(i) It is noticed that the natural $BMS$ invariant pure quasifree state $λ$ on $\cW(\scri)$, recently introduced by Dappiaggi, Moretti an Pinamonti, enjoys positivity of the self-adjoint generator of $u$-translations with respect to {\em every} Bondi coordinate frame $(u,\z,\bz)$ on $\scri$, $u\in \bR$ being the affine parameter of the null geodesics forming $\scri$. This fact may be interpreted as a remnant of spectral condition inherited from Minkowski spacetime. (ii) It is pr…
We discuss the Bose-Fermi equivalence in the quantum Brownian motion (QBM) on a triangular lattice, mapping the action for the QBM into a string theory action with a periodic boundary tachyon potential. We construct new Klein factors which are more appropriate than the conventional ones to deal with the quantum field theories defined on a two dimensioanl space-time with boundaries. Using the Fermi-Bose equivalence with the new Klein factors, we show that the model for the quantum Bownian motion on a triangular lattice is equivalent to the Thirring model with boundary terms, which are quadratic…
We elaborate on the ambient space approach to boundary values of $AdS_{d+1}$ gauge fields and apply it to massless fields of mixed-symmetry type. In the most interesting case of odd-dimensional bulk the respective leading boundary values are conformal gauge fields subject to the invariant equations. Our approach gives a manifestly conformal and gauge covariant formulation for these fields. Although such formulation employs numerous auxiliary fields, it comes with a systematic procedure for their elimination that results in a more concise formulation involving only a reasonable set of auxiliari…
Light cone gauge manifestly supersymmetric formulations of type IIB 10-dimensional supergravity in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background and related boundary conformal field theory representations are developed. A precise correspondence between the bulk fields of IIB supergravity and the boundary operators is established. The formulations are given entirely in terms of light cone scalar superfields, allowing us to treat all component fields on an equal footing.
The standard formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence is incomplete since it requires adding to a supergravity action some a priori unknown boundary terms. We suggest a modification of the correspondence principle based on the Hamiltonian formulation of the supergravity action, which does not require any boundary terms. Then all the boundary terms of the standard formulation naturally appear by passing from the Hamiltonian version to the Lagrangian one. As examples the graviton part of the supergravity action on the product of $AdS_{d+1}$ with a compact Einstein manifold $\cal E$ and fermions…
We analyze the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory defined on a manifold with boundary for two different sets of boundary equations derived from a variational principle. We pay special attention to the identification of the infinite chains of boundary constraints and their resolution. We identify edge observables and their algebra [which corresponds to the well-known $U(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra]. Without performing any gauge fixing, and using the Hodge-Morrey theorem, we solve the Hamilton equations whenever possible. In order to give explicit solutions, we …
We reconcile the Hamiltonian formalism and the zero curvature representation in the approach to integrable boundary conditions for a classical integrable system in 1+1 space-time dimensions. We start from an ultralocal Poisson algebra involving a Lax matrix and two (dynamical) boundary matrices. Sklyanin's formula for the double-row transfer matrix is used to derive Hamilton's equations of motion for both the Lax matrix {\bf and} the boundary matrices in the form of zero curvature equations. A key ingredient of the method is a boundary version of the Semenov-Tian-Shansky formula for the genera…
We formulate the most general gravitational models with constant negative curvature ("hyperbolic gravity") on an arbitrary orientable two-dimensional surface of genus $g$ with $b$ circle boundaries in terms of a $\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)_\partial$ gauge theory of flat connections. This includes the usual JT gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the dilaton field as a special case. A key ingredient is to realize that the correct gauge group is not the full $\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, but a subgroup $\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)_{\partial}$ of gauge transformations that go to $\text{U}(1)$ loc…
We have studied in a previous work the quantization of a mixed bulk-boundary system describing the coupled dynamics between a bulk quantum field confined to a spacetime with finite space slice and with timelike boundary, and a boundary observable defined on the boundary. Our bulk system is a quantum field in a spacetime with timelike boundary and a dynamical boundary condition-the boundary observable's equation of motion. Owing to important physical motivations, in such previous work we have computed the renormalized local state polarization and local Casimir energy for both the bulk quantum f…
